Charismatic theatrical and artistic director of Teatro Franco Parenti, and Milanese entrepreneur Andrée Ruth Shammah talks to Milan Luxury, revealing an upcoming big surprise for the city: the re-opening of a magnificent outdoor swimming pool in the heart of the city.

Shammah promises amazing innovations targeting the interaction between body and mind.

O

n a rainy afternoon at the end of winter, Andrée Ruth Shammah meets me in her office inside the Teatro Franco Parenti building; it is a warm, welcoming space, furnished with numerous objects. It is obvious from the outset that each object, from the smallest ornament to the heavier paperweight, has a story or dream to tell. And the project, which she cannot wait to tell me about, is also a dream that is about to become a reality. In fact, the Fondazione Franco Parenti is currently working on the redevelopment of the Caimi centre with its old public swimming pool, that lies adjacent to the theatre.

“We are revamping an important place in the city which was slowly dying. It is likely to be one of the most unique projects in Europe, if not the whole world: a theatre with a swimming pool that offers integrated activities for the mind and the body. We are also planning on providing a series of activities for children, as well as various events at sunset when the pool is closed to the public. However, we still need to study the project carefully to understand how to best integrate the exterior with the complex and the theatre. We’ll have to see what kind of interaction there is between theatergoers and people using the pool, because, obviously, it will continue to be a public swimming pool, with accessible pricing.”

INTERVIEW | ANDRÉE RUTH SHAMMAH WHO’S WHO Eduardo De Filippo: a playwright, actor, director, poet and screenwriter, De Filippo was born in 1900. He was a key figure on the Italian cultural scene.

Giorgio Strehler: born in 1921, Strehler was one of the most influential theatre directors on an international level. In 1947, he co-founded the Piccolo Teatro with Paolo Grassi.

Paolo Grassi: a theatrical impresario, Grassi was born in 1919. He was also the Superintendent of the La Scala Opera House and President of Rai, Italy’s national broadcasting company.

Franco Parenti: an actor, director and scriptwriter for television, Parenti was born in 1921. He co-founded the Salone Pier Lombardo with Shammah.

Adriana Asti: a stage and screen actress, she was born in 1931. She was directed, among others, by Luchino Visconti and Bernardo Bertolucci.

Tell us about your beginnings, especially how you knew what you wanted to do when ‘you grew up’...

“I still don’t know. I’m doing ‘things’ and the years have flown by. I have so little time to think about what I’m going to do that I just continue doing what I’m doing. I started out during ‘the years of protest’ with Paolo Grassi when Giorgio Strehler left the Piccolo Teatro; they were truly dynamic years, full of contradictions, hopes and disappointments; I worked with Eduardo De Filippo, and obviously, with Franco Parenti with whom I later founded this theatre.”

In your opinion, what is the aim of theatrical art?

“The aim of theatrical art is to bring people together in a live setting. It’s all about smells and rituals and talking to each and every person: the theatre allows many entities to become one. It means that a group of people become ‘the’ public; the theatre puts man, experiences and emotions at the center.

If the performance is good, people will remember it and the empathic exchange between the actors and the audience is enormous. Theatre has nothing in common with the other arts: it’s the art of the present; a film or a painting may withstand the test of time, while a performance is unique and unrepeatable and dies at the end of an evening.”

What does it mean to be the director of an important theatre like the Franco Parenti?

“I don’t have the mental space to ask myself this question.

It wasn’t something that I decided, I just found myself doing it.

I do, however, hope to do it as best as I can. The real question is what happens afterwards: seeing that everything in the theatre is so ephemeral, the structure and formulations that I have put in place should guarantee that apart from myself, this theatre – in spite of not being a public theatre – should not be allowed to die or taken over by bats.”

Tell us an anecdote, an unusual event that occurred at the theatre.

“I could tell you lots! I like to remember Eduardo (Editor’s note: De Filippo) who, after deciding that he no longer wanted to go to the theatre in Milan, because he said that in Milan all theatres are underground, and added that, ‘there will be lots of time to spend underground,’ – and it’s true, the Manzoni is underground, the Piccolo was underground, so when he came here and saw the windows facing outside and the courtyards with the apartment block, he exclaimed: ‘Here life enters the theatre and the theatre enters life’. I have repeated this lots of times. In fact, all the rooms are illuminated by an artificial light from the outside, as if one were witnessing the changing of day into night, then the shutters are closed and everything becomes dark. I even wanted to light up the ceiling with stars, to announce the beginning of the show, which is a nocturnal thing.”

What does “luxury” mean to you? And which luxury do you indulge in?

“Luxury is the superfluous, it’s a detail that can mean anything; a detail that could mean vulgarity or poetry and, therefore, real luxury is being able to allow yourself what others consider superfluous, and which for me means beauty and harmony, something that I could never give up; beauty intended as ‘the search for perfection’: looking after something is an act of love. In my shows, no detail is left to chance, even details that people can’t see. For example, a few nights ago, the actress Adriana Asti went on stage and saw a small elephant lying against the wall, a toy that a child had left behind during a performance, and she said, ‘I didn’t notice it from far off.’ ‘It doesn’t matter,’ I replied, ‘but it’s there’. If you know that there are small signs of poetry, of life and of humanity, then you perceive them as a whole: the famous ‘c’est le temp que tu as perdu pour ta rose’ – ‘it’s the time that you spent on your rose’ – that makes it so important.”

Talking about Milan, what opportunities has it given you from a point of view of your career? Tell us about your relationship with the city.

“Milan gives you what you take and you have to hold onto it for dear life. It makes you determined not to give up, in other cities you don’t have to pull out all the stops. I was born in

Milan and I wouldn’t know how to live in any other city in the world.

When I return to Milan from another place, even the ugliest areas make me feel that I’m back home.”

Is there a corner of the city that you love in particular (obviously apart from your ‘home’ in via Pier Lombardo)?

“It depends on different periods of my life. I adore the Public Gardens, where I spent time as a child, where I started walking, where I jogged, where I staged several open-air performances. It’s a place that often moves me because these are the gardens of my infancy and because it’s the only place where different stages of my life overlap. It holds endless memories: my grandfather collecting leaves, the nannies who put on my gloves which I then pulled off in desperation; my high school graduation which I celebrated with a wonderful event; my first open-air event, those gardens and their surroundings provide endless food for thought.”

What do you do when you have a free half-day in Milan?

“I never have a free half-day, but when I can I go to the country. I spend my free days here in the theatre and I really enjoy it. Joking apart, I do everything that I haven’t had time to do: the best thing about Milan is that you can do what you like and choose a job that isn’t a job but fills you with passion; the word freedom is ambiguous. From what are we free? From doing what we want to do?”

Tell us about your favourite addresses in Milan?

“Via Pier Lombardo, via Vasari (Editor’s note: the headquarters of Teatro Franco Parenti) and now I’m going to add via Botta (Editor’s note: This is where the Caimi swimming is set to re-open:)”.

Andrée Ruth Shammah was born in Milan in 1948. In 1972, she cofounded the Salone Pier Lombardo, later renamed Teatro Franco Parenti, with Franco Parenti, becoming its sole artistic director in 1989. She organizes numerous festivals and has been honoured with several awards, including, the prestigious Franco Enriquez Prize for the best artistic direction and the best theatre programming in 2013. During the same year, she celebrated 40 years in the industry.

TIPS | ANDRÉE RUTH SHAMMAH NOT ‘JUST’ A SWIMMING POOL After 11 years of disuse, one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in Milan has been totally revamped and is set to open in spring. In addition to two swimming pools, its interior will also host a bar and a restaurant with a panoramic terrace for romantic ‘al fresco’ dining. Under the skillful management of Andrée Ruth Shammah, the swimming pool will be enhanced with a rich events calendar, concerts and art exhibitions.

THE PUBLIC GARDENS HOLDING ENDLESS MEMORIES A green lung in the city, loved by the Milanese on account of its highly central location, its elegant, peaceful atmosphere and its age-old trees and well-tended paths. Behind the scenes

In the year 2000, the renovations masterminded

by Mario Botta transformed Milan’s 18th century Teatro alla Scala into a technologically avant-garde masterpiece. The new ‘scenic tower’, standing at a height of 56m, 18 of which are below ground, houses stage machinery capable of handling the most complex and spectacular stage sets, even when the curtain is up. The most advanced prototype in the world.

Marble spectaculars

Among the statues and decorations of the Duomo of Milan, under the watchful gaze of the Madonnina, one would expect to only see portrayals of biblical figures, saints, demons and garlands‌ but here, this rule does not apply: amidst the 3,400 statues etched in marble there are also a number of famous Italian personages including the poet Dante, renowned composer and conductor Arturo Toscanini and King Vittorio Emanuele, but also two boxers (in honour of Italian champion Primo Carnera) and a semi-nude woman lying between one spire and another.

An iconic vineyard in the city

Recently opened and housed in the gardens of the Casa degli Atellani (see photo), Leonardo da Vinci’s Vineyard is located just a short distance from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where he painted ‘The Last Supper’. Visitors can now take an insightful tour of both the House and the Vineyard.

A Leonardo that you might not have expected…

The Last Supper, the Codex Atlanticus and his machines. But then, there’s also this mysterious portrait, a small, unforgettable painting, attributed to Maestro da Vinci, entitled ‘Portrait of a Musician’. It’s preserved, together with several other breathtaking masterpieces, at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.

… and the one that you were looking for

Each year, in order to view Leonardo’s Last Supper, 450,000 visitors stand in line. As an image, ‘The Last Supper’ is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and has been put on everything from mirrors, to mouse pads, to musical pillows. In fact, on entering the refectory, visitors are often surprised that this is actually what it looks like.

Marvels

It’s the other face of the famed Pinacoteca di Brera, the Orto botanico and the Osservatorio astronomico. At the last census-taking, the Biblioteca Braidense, built at the behest of Empress Maria Teresa of Austria in 1770, boasted 898,377 printed books, 2,119 manuscripts and 2,368 incunabola. A truly wondrous sight!

Above and beneath

Castello Sforzesco’s appeal as a historic dwelling is revealed in its crenellated walls and its secret underground passages, lit by the light shining through slits in the walls. The passageways were used to connect the Castle’s watchtowers and can only be visited with a guide.

Behind the old-world bronze tellers’ counters at the historic headquarters of the Banca Commerciale, the Gallerie d’Italia Piazza Scala exhibit spectacular masterpieces of 19th and 20th century art and sculpture alongside other works presented to the public for the first time. A modern-day patron of the arts: the works of the Intesa Sanpaolo collections are housed in three historic buildings overlooking via Manzoni, Piazza della Scala and via Morone.

The Sistine Chapel of Milan

San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is an early Christian church that was totally rebuilt during Renaissance times. Due to its sumptuous interiors emblazoned with gold and frescoes from the school of Leonardo, it has been dubbed the ‘Sistine Chapel of Milan’.

Sant’Ambrogio

You’re not in Ravenna nor in Piazza Armerina. You’re in Milan, and this is Sant’Ambrogio. In addition to being noted for its medieval architecture, a perfect example of Romanesque splendour, there’s something else to admire: a rare mosaic, that after various vicissitudes, finally found its way here.

A melting pot of cultures

The MUDEC-Museo delle Culture started life as an operation of archaeological recovery in one of the most lively districts of Milan, the Tortona area. The architecture of MUDEC mirrors the many spirits that dwell in the museum, featuring a central hall of free inspiration which generates an inner courtyard with a characteristic ‘flower’ shape.

Fashion on show

To celebrate 40 years dedicated to fashion, last May Giorgio Armani opened the doors of a new exhibition hub in a former Nestlé granary in Milan’s Tortona district, at the general headquarters of maison Armani.

The museum/exhibition space designed by Japanese archistar Tadao Ando is divided by themes that have inspired and continue to inspire the creative work of ‘King Giorgio’.

Vertical forest

Recently named the “most beautiful building on the planet”, the green tower designed by architect Stefano Boeri and included in the Porta Nuova project is a revolutionary experiment. A panel of experts awarded it first prize, preferring it to other humungous feats of architecture like the One World Trade Center in New York, the CapitaGreen in Singapore and the Burj Mohammed Bin Rashid Tower in Abu Dhabi.

New hub

One of Milan’s oldest areas has been restored thanks to a urban project making it the most modern district in the city. The epicentre of the area, packed with high-tech stores, bookstores, cafés, pizzerias and discotheques, is the large raised square dedicated to architect and designer Gae Aulenti. The piazza is surrounded by skyscrapers, including the UniCredit tower, the highest building in Italy, and the multi-purpose UniCredit Pavilion, designed by Michele De Lucchi.

ITALIAN FUTURISM One hundred years after the death of Umberto Boccioni, the exhibition pays homage to the undisputed protagonist of Italian avant-garde Futurism, exploring his artistic career, his international reputation and his Milanese activity.

In addition to the 250 works on display including drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings, period photographs, books, magazines and documents, the exhibition also features several unpublished documents.

DESIGN AFTER DESIGN In 2016, after a hiatus of twenty years, the International Triennale di Milano Exhibition, makes a comeback. The event, conceived in Monza, in 1923, relocated to Milan in 1933 to examine the most pressing issues of society.

Its historic venue, Palazzo dell’Arte, is now a benchmark in the cultural life of Milan: it houses the Triennale Design Museum, temporary international exhibitions, a specialized library, a theatre and entertainment spaces for visitors of all ages. Endorsed by the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions), the exhibition will move beyond its historical venue at the Triennale to other equally prestigious locations across the city.

WAR AND PEACE The Liberation of Italy (1943-1946) is explored from two different viewpoints.

Black-and-white photos from Istituto Luce, the Fascist regime’s propaganda tool, are displayed alongside colour photos by the Signal Corps, the US army’s communications service. The images on display, mostly previously unreleased or censored, tell of the tragedy of war. A rare repertoire which, for the first time ever, also features several photographs of Milan.

Art galleries Precious artefacts converse with pictorial arts: Moshe Tabibnia offers an exhibition on the theme of textile art enhanced by a cycle of conferences and talks, while David Sorgato showcases a collection of painted and woven works referencing their unique symbiotic relationship.

THE INTERTWINING OF TEXTILE ART AND PAINTING An original two-way excursus through the history of European painting and textile art, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century: 25 paintings by renowned Italian masters (several on loan from the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Poldi Pezzoli Museum) are displayed alongside antique carpets from the Moshe Tabibnia collection, an intertwining of wefts and brushstrokes. The carpet is identified as ‘Sacred Ground’, a hallowed object depicted in religious, profane and everyday scenes revealing its enormous symbolic and allegorical value.

An Anglo-Canadian architect, designer and museum curator, James M. Bradburne was nominated head of the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense in 2015, and is planning a restyling starting from the concept of the museum itself. His source of inspiration? His years of experience including exhibitions and projects for Unesco, national governments, museums and private foundations.

What are three adjectives that describe Milan? Dynamic, down-to-earth, gracious.

Tell us three reasons to visit (and revisit) Brera, apart from its exquisite collection of paintings? The marvelous library, the Biblioteca Braidense; the Observatory; the Orto Botanico (1). Enhancing its role of being the heart of the city’s cultural life, is one of the main challenges of the next three years.

What are your main projects for Brera?

Firstly to increase the overall amenities of Brera, to put it back into the heart of Milan, which means new seating, signage and a host of activities. Secondly, to re-install the permanent collection with an accent on families and children, and with new lighting and bilingual labeling, and finally, to open the Palazzo Citterio in 2018 with the Pinacoteca’s extraordinary permanent collection of Italian modern art, one of the best in the world.

You can hear a dozen languages in a tenminute walk from Brera to La Scala, and you can choose between the best ‘risotto alla Milanese’ (4) and Italy’s best sushi.

And when you have just an hour? I go for a bicycle ride in the park.
