Design today goes beyond doing and making things: it is a holistic approach that mixes the tangible with the intangible, like space and sound, to create emotional responses that influence the way we see things. It still fulfills its original mission of challenging the status quo and making the world more functional, but with a broader reach then it has ever had before.

ome months ago, design guru Fabio Novembre made the following speech during a prize-giving ceremony: “Look at it this way, I’m the last of the Mohicans, the youngest of the old guard. I'm lucky enough to be considered one of the best of my generation at doing things that others have done before me. I am the heir of an era. However, this person, the man that you see here, is a pioneer. He has carved out a niche for himself by cutting through the forest with a machete. Rather than following

a well-trodden path, he has literally invented a trade. This man is helping to reinvent the concept of design. However, that’s why I’m famous and he isn’t, because he’s way ahead of his time!”. If you’re wondering whom Novembre was addressing and why, read on. Design in the traditional sense of the word According to the dictionary, design is ‘a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before

rom design to design thinking it is made’. In other words, design is associated with objects. It’s a question of visualizing, designing and then creating something that you can touch and see, something that will have a function and embellish our homes. The event that each year transforms Milan into the capital of international design (the 57th edition will be held from 17 to 22 April) is called the ‘Salone del Mobile’ (Furniture Fair), a definition that inextricably links the concept of design to furnishing. But is this definition still relevant? An area that is still profitable exists. One which though related to traditional design, is open to embracing new trends. For example, customization, modularity and sustainability are all aspects that are well represented at a ‘Salone’ that is still healthy. But there’s a feeling that something new is happening. Design in its most effective form is a process, an action; it’s a verb not a noun and it’s a protocol for solving problems and discovering innovative solutions – good solutions – targeted at satisfying

ALGORITHMS As a senior curator of the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA in New York, fifty-five-year-old Paola Antonelli recently expanded her department’s collection by purchasing algorithms and biological entities. “Design has expanded its area of activities, research and influence”, she says.

people’s needs. As the American designer Raymond Loewy once remarked: "the main goal of design is not to complicate the already difficult life of the consumer." Loewy was, in fact, the creator behind many iconic designs including the Coca Cola bottle and the livery on Air Force One. The purpose of design remains the same as Achille Castiglioni or Vico Magistretti suggested: offering people products that are practical, beautiful, fun and safe; items that add value to the lives of people. The only difference today is that it’s no longer a question of simply designing objects, because people’s desires and needs, or their awareness of these needs, have changed. Design thinking Four years ago, 43-year-old Mauro Porcini was listed in the Under 40 ranking as one of the top 10 most successful Italians in America. After holding executive positions at Philips and 3M, he joined PepsiCo in 2012 as ‘Chief Design Officer’, a position

especially created for him. He was the brains behind the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, and used his position as a social media influencer to disseminate the culture of design thinking. He contributed to the launch of the new ‘lady-friendly’ potato chips that are quieter to eat, less messy and come in packets designed to fit in handbags. He has received numerous awards. The man mentioned by Fabio Novembre during his speech was none other than Porcini. Enumerating his multiple achievements is a daunting task. He is a designer, but he doesn’t only design ‘products’. He designs events, experiences, spaces, advertising campaigns, social movements, potato chips and even words. During the week of the launch, ‘lady-friendly’ was a definition that appeared so frequently on the Internet that it was included in the Oxford Dictionaries Weekly Word Watch as one of the latest examples of ‘ping words’ to watch as being particularly indicative of the spirit of our times. “Nowadays, a designer is someone who is a cultural interpreter, a facilitator, a connector of disciplines and functions, whose sole aim is to find solutions that will improve the quality of people’s lives. A designer is a person who is in love with people and in love with life. They want to contribute – with ideas both large and small – and make the world a simpler, healthier, more beautiful, happier place. Designers are no longer being brought in at the end of the process to make things look pretty, but rather are providing essential insights from the ground up and multinationals are rushing to hire them.” Fifty-five-year-old Paola Antonelli is another renowned Italian designer and architect who agrees with this. A senior curator of the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA in New York, Antonelli was recently rated as one of the top one hundred most powerful people in the world of art by ‘Art Review’. Antonelli recently expanded her department’s collection by purchasing algorithms. In an interview with Italian design magazine ‘Studio’ she said: “It’s true! At the beginning of summer, the museum acquired a digital rendering and two 3D-printed models of a virus for our design collection. We also acquired ‘Baskets’, a series of three delicate, sculptural designs from a collaboration between a nationally recognized Native American basket weaver and an architectural studio which develops digital algorithms. We purchased algorithms and biological entities. Although this is a little unusual for our sector, it’s a project that we’ve been working on for a few years. We’re trying to make the world understand that design has significantly expanded its area of activities, research and influence. Our job is to make sure that cultural institutions support this ongoing transformation.” In other words, the contemporary designer acts as a necessary mediator between scientific-technological revolutions and our lives. “Real innovation cannot exist without design,” says Antonelli. “Scientists can discover microwave ovens or invent the Internet,

but without the designers who create the interface or design the ovens, all these innovations wouldn’t exist. Therefore, the quicker the changes, the more essential the role of the designer becomes. A multiplicity of disciplines In this instance, the concept of design encompasses a multitude of perspectives. The Gio Forma are a trio of ‘Milanese’ designers: Cristiana Picco, Claudio Santucci and Florian Boje who laughingly describe themselves as “Milanese designers hailing respectively from Milan, Livorno and Hamburg.” They are all under 50, and established their studio in the Italian capital of design many years ago. They achieved star status during Expo 2015 following the creation of the famous and widely photographed ‘Tree of Life’, a sculpture-installation that became the symbol of the event. Prior to this, they had already garnered recognition on the design scene. Although they received a fairly traditional education at the Brera Academy and perfected their skills as set designers at La Scala, their success is due to their innovative approach to design and their ability to think out of the box. They were among the first of their generation to comprehend the potential of a ‘design-oriented’ approach in a world of mixed influences, becoming a benchmark for concert design (Laura Pausini and Tiziano Ferro hired them to create the formats for their shows), fashion shows (including those staged by Versace), but also

‘multifaceted’ events including the Bicentenary of the Mexican republic or the inauguration of a museum in Bahrein. But in this concept of ‘liquid’ creativity, a set designer at La Scala became the designer of rock concerts, and a visual designer became a set designer for opera. Thirty-six-year-old Michele Innocente has designed video-set designs for important productions at La Scala and the Arena of Verona, transitioning adeptly between museum projects and new media. And, finally, there is the whole area of sound design, or to be more specific of audio branding. Experts agree that in the near future we will see the implementation of a trend that aims at building a brand sound representing the identity and values of a brand in a distinctive manner, not unlike the way in which logos and corporate colours are used to optimize brand communication. Daniele Carli, a sound designer from Treviso who emigrated to Los Angeles, specializes in films and video games. It all began when he fell in love with the 1999 blockbuster movie, ‘The Matrix’. According to Carli, each sound is a project because in order to achieve an effect that is both realistic and spectacular, it is important to focus on all aspects of the narrative. The sense of Italian Style Despite having made history thanks to the work of several leading 20th-century masters, is Italy still the world capital of design? Does it make sense to talk about ‘Italianness’ as an

advantage? From her observatory at MoMA, Paola Antonelli is both critical and optimistic. “We continue to talk about Made in Italy referencing only the work of the stars of the past, such as Zanuso, Sottsass, Castiglioni and Gae Aulenti,” says the curator. “But I’m not sure whether this is about pure mental laziness, or the fact that the people who superintend Italian culture today are often the peers of those masters. That said, Italy boasts a number of up-and-coming designers and they’re all extremely talented. It’s time to give them space.” However, Mauro Porcini is convinced that ‘Italianness’ is still a plus. “Italian design and Italian designers are cultural brands that embody – with intuition and immediacy – the stylistic heritage of our country, the culture of art, fashion and food, the beauty of our incredible landscapes, as well as a certain natural ability for problem-solving, i.e. the ability to find innovative solutions, by using our proverbial creativity as leverage. This heritage contributes to endorsing our credibility throughout the world and is the cornerstone of our design culture. I am extremely grateful to my typically Italian university, which provided me with a unique cultural background, a rare commodity on the international scene. I have often surprised my audience by describing the depth of my academic resume, the variety of disciplines to which I was exposed while studying at the Politecnico di Milano. It’s an approach that transcends the unique world of design to encompass a rich, versatile, multi-disciplinary culture; the typical culture of design thinking.

Rome “caput mundi”

The Imperial Forum, the Colosseum, the ‘Mouth of Truth’ and the Domus Aurea. The roots of Rome’s splendour can be found in the classical age, when the city was the centre of a vast empire that contributed to the spreading of incredibly advanced standards of civilization. The ancient ruins from that era are among the world’s bestloved and most sought-after tourist attractions. Likewise, especially between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Rome’s role as the capital of Christianity contributed to making it the centre of the artistic world with a concentration of artworks that was unrivaled elsewhere. Many of the world’s most celebrated artists were summoned by popes to come to Rome, where they left behind masterpieces of immeasurable beauty.

Mantua, the city of the Gonzagas

Though less well-known than Venice or Florence, Mantua, a charming city situated in Northern Italy on the banks of the River Mincio, is packed with art treasures. Governed by the Gonzaga family for four centuries, from circa 1300 to 1700, this Lombard city experienced its maximum period of splendour during the Renaissance, when its most famous masterpieces were executed. A renowned patron of the arts, Isabella d’Este, the Marchesa of Mantua and the wife of Federico Gonzaga, summoned artists like Titian, Perugino, Leonardo da Vinci and Correggio to her court. Inspired by his mother’s passion for collecting art, Federico II invited Raphael’s pupil Giulio Romano to come to Mantua to build Palazzo Te, a dazzling example of 16th-century classicism. Even the layout of the city itself with its squares and palaces is truly delightful.

With canals in the place of streets, and boats instead of cars, Venice, the city of a thousand bridges, spectacular facades and breathtaking views, offers a dreamlike vision. An unexpected Milan

In 2016, Milan was ranked the number one tourist destination in Italy. Gone are the days of a flying visit, with just enough time for shopping before catching a cab to Malpensa airport. Considered one of the world’s leading hubs of business, fashion and design, today Milan is finally being given long overdue credit as a city of art and a place of cultural interest. In addition to the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and the Last Supper (absolute must-visits, in their own right), Milan is also home to numerous other attractions that make it much more than the puritanically workobsessed city that it is often portrayed as. In Milan you'll find courtyards hidden behind entrance doors, masterpieces of architecture unexpectedly revealed amidst anonymous facades and public and private museums offering myriad treasures.

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance

How can one describe a city which originated in the Renaissance in just a few words; a city that gave the world Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Raphael and Botticelli, and was also the place where the Gioconda was painted. Actually, it’s impossible! The only solution is to stand in line alongside the ten million visitors who flock to the city each year, to gaze in awe at the Duomo or Santa Croce, the masterpieces housed in the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio or Piazza della Signoria, Michelangelo’s David or Palazzo Pitti. It is really no surprise that the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since there is not one centimeter of the city that is not worthy visiting, we strongly suggest that you make time to lose yourself amidst its art and architecture, its history and its landscapes. There’s just one thing you need to remember: this is the place where Stendhal experienced what was later to become known as the Stendhal or Florence syndrome. Need we say more?

Home to many masterpieces of art and architecture, Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of “David” is preserved at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Florence. On the opposite page, the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most widely-visited museums in the world.

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest landmarks in the city. According to certain historic documents it was the only bridge spanning the Arno that the Germans, out of respect for its beauty, did not destroy during the Second World War. A jewel among jewels, it has been the street of jewelers since Renaissance times.

This is the golden rule of mountain cooking to which Norbert Niederkofler – the South Tyrolean chef who in 2017 received the highest accolade possible, a final third Michelin star for his incredible food – adheres religiously. In the recipe featured on this page, Niederkofler reinterprets a famous peasant classic, transforming it into a surprisingly beautiful light dish. His ‘tripe cooked in milk’, a dish made from beef offal, black pudding, mountain milk infused with the aroma of hay and cranberries (in this case of the less common, ‘Albina’ variety) picked directly from nearby bushes. “Variety lies in combining simple ingredients,” says the chef. “My gastronomic commitment involves choosing the right cooking method. The result should be delicate and simple yet surprising: lightness that you can see and taste.”

Canneto sull’Oglio is a tiny village: a rural hamlet, located just a short distance from Mantua. It was put on the gourmet map by the Santini family, the owners of one of the most famous restaurants in Europe. Rosanna Marziale is one of a generation of young women spearheading new Southern Italian cuisine. As the head chef of the Le Colonne restaurant in Caserta, her cuisine remains loyal to the traditions of suburban Naples, inspired by her childhood memories of the food served at her family’s restaurant. However, her passion and creativity, combined with her training under Gianfranco Vissani and Martin Berasategui, make her anything but provincial and have, in fact, earned her a Michelin star.

Mozzarella and tomatoes re-imagined

The most traditional, ‘Italian’ pairing imaginable: Campana mozzarella and Vesuvian tomatoes. This pairing is transformed and enhanced to become a new, creative dish in this unique reinterpretation by chef Rosanna Marziale, the "Mozzarella ball". In addition to being one of the oldest and most characteristic products of Campanian agriculture, the DOP Vesuvio Piennolo cherry tomato is one of the vegetables featured in the traditional Neapolitan nativity scene. For preservation purposes, these tiny tomatoes are bound together in bunches and left to dry in ventilated areas. In this recipe, which includes the addition of pesto, they are used as the base for a special sauce for one portion of ‘tagliolini’. The well of a mozzarella ball is filled with the pasta, which is then fried and placed on a bed of pea purée accompanied by a serving of the special tomato sauce.

Tax Free Refund Guide 1. VAT (in Italian: IVA) is a value added tax on goods and services, and is part of the European Union’s value added tax system. 2. In some cases, travellers may be granted a VAT refund. This refund does not cover the services supplied by hotels, restaurants, taxis or agencies. 3. You may be eligible for a VAT refund provided that: • you are a non EU resident; • the goods purchased are intended for personal or family use only and are carried in your luggage; • the overall value of the goods purchased exceeds 154,94 Euro (VAT included); • the purchase is certified by an invoice. This invoice should include a description of the goods purchased, your personal information as well as the details of your passport or any other equivalent document; • the goods leave EU territory by the end of the third month after the month that you bought them; • several specific customs formalities are complied with; • the invoice is returned to the Italian retailer within four months after the purchase was made. 4. The goods purchased and the relevant invoice must be shown at the customs exit point when leaving EU territory (if you intend to pack the purchased items into your check-in luggage, you must go to Customs BEFORE checking in). 5. After leaving EU territory, the traveller must return the original invoice, regularly endorsed by the customs office, to the Italian retailer. Said invoice must be returned within four months from the date when the document was issued. 6. The refund can be made directly by the Italian retailer (however, make sure that the shop you’ve chosen displays a “Tax Free Shopping” or “Euro Tax Free” sign in its window). 7. Several Tax-Free companies are able to offer immediate VAT cash refunds when the goods leave either Italian or EU territory (thus exonerating the passenger from having to return the invoice to the retailer). However, this procedure only applies at major international airports or main border crossings. Most major department stores have Tax Free Refund offices. 8. The services provided by Tax-Free companies imply the payment of a small administrative sum which is directly deducted from the amount of VAT refunded to the traveller. 9. In the event of a traveller not receiving a VAT refund within a reasonable period of time, he or she should re-contact the Italian retailer or one of the aforementioned companies. 10. MILAN CULTURE IN ITALY BETWEEN THE TWO WARS “Post Zang Tumb Tuuum. Art Life Politics: Italia 1918–1943″ is the evocative title of the exhibition currently showing at the Prada Foundation. Curated by Germano Celant, the exhibition explores art and culture in Italy in the years between World War I and II. Over 600 paintings, sculptures, photographs, posters, architectural models and furniture shed light on the social and political context in which they were created, and subsequently interpreted by the public of that era. The vast exhibition space extends between the South gallery, the Deposito, the North gallery and the Podium, providing an immersive experience consisting of 24 partial reconstructions of public and private spaces. These full-size recreations from period photographs feature original works by artists such as Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, Felice Casorati, Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi.

ROME A CORNER OF JAPAN IN ROME From 1 March to 29 July, the Scuderie del Quirinale will host an important exhibition dedicated to Japanese woodblock printer and painter Utagawa Hiroshige who, together with his co-national Hokusai, is considered one of the leading Japanese landscape artists of the 19th century. Man and the almost religious contemplation of nature in its multiple forms are the favourite subjects of Hiroshige, whose work differs from that of other painters of his era thanks to his ultra-modern, almost cinematographic perception which focuses, first and foremost, on striking innovations of composition, particularly those in which a dramatically enlarged foreground element is set against a distant view.

VENICE A FULVIO ROITER RETROSPECTIVE Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice is dedicating an exhibition to the late Fulvio Roiter, a photographer who, more than any other, captured the real essence of the lagoon city on film. Featuring a display of 200 mainly vintage photographs, this retrospective sheds light on the breadth and originality of Roiter’s works. The exhibition explores the artist’s beginnings, starting from his early neo-realistic work that gradually evolved into a highly original and personal perspective of both Venice and the rest of the world. In addition to the Lagoon, his works includes photographs of New Orleans, Belgium, Portugal, Andalusia and Brazil. The retrospective is completed by a series of video screenings, blowups and original books compiled of the numerous critical essays written about Roiter’s work by renowned authors of his era.

REGGIO EMILIA PHOTOGRAPHY AND REVOLUTION From 20 April to 17 June, Reggio Emilia will host ‘Fotografia Europea (European Photography)’. Now in its 13th consecutive year, the festival will showcase the works of more than 100 photographers from different European countries, who have been invited to freely interpret a predetermined subject. This year, the event will explore the theme of ‘Revolutions-Rebellions, Changes and Utopias’. But the question today is who, or what, is considered revolutionary. The various off-site events will attempt to answer this and other questions, encouraging the exchange of cultural ideas.

Events April is Design Month in Milan, when thousands of designers, buyers and tourists flock to the pavilions at Rho Fiera and the numerous exhibition spaces scattered across the city. In May, the spotlight in Venice is on architecture, with events and spectacular installations.

MILAN THE CAPITAL OF DESIGN Salone del Mobile.Milano. One of the most significant innovations at this year’s event is its new ‘Manifesto’: the addition of the word ‘Milano’ to its name highlights the strong bond that, with a network of connections, creativity and innovation, links the Salone to the city of Milan. To strengthen this bond, the event will spread beyond the confines of the Fair to the piazza Duomo, where a huge exhibition-installation titled ‘Living Nature. La Natura dell’Abitare’ will be set up (see photo). Fuorisalone. This year the buzzword at Ventura is ‘cool’. The Ventura Future and Ventura Centrale projects have established themselves as hubs of creativity and experimentation for a vast, extremely enthusiastic international audience. The first edition of Ventura Future will be held at various locations across the city, including the ‘FuturDome’ palazzo Liberty (via Paisiello 6), a former meeting place for Futurist artists, that has been transformed into an independent museum and events space. The location will be used to showcase the creations of renowned avant-garde Italian design companies including Editions Milano, Mingardo, and Mason. The second edition of Ventura Centrale – hosted at the abandoned warehouses under Milan’s Central Station (see photo) – will feature the work of both emerging and established designers, including Nitto, Asahi Glass, Surface Magazine with David Rockwell, Baars & Bloemhoff and a project by Fabrica. www.venturaprojects.com

ARCHITECTURE INVADES THE LAGUNA From 26 May to 25 November 2018 the 16th International Exhibition of Architecture will be hosted at the ‘Giardini’, the ‘Arsenale’ and at different venues across Venice. The theme of this year’s edition is ‘Freespace’ and is intended to symbolize the generosity of spirit and sense of humanity at the core of architecture's agenda. Italy, in particular, with its pavilion titled ‘Arcipelago Italia’ will focus on the interior areas of the country; remote, little-known places that are often far removed from large inhabited centres, where depopulation, demographic ageing and poverty risk obliterating centuries of history, memory and identity.

BRESCIA-ROME-BRESCIA VINTAGE CAR RALLY On Wednesday 16 May, vintage racecar enthusiasts will be revving their engines for the start of the 36th edition of the re-enactment of the Mille Miglia. According to tradition, the drivers competing in this exciting four-day rally will cover 1,000 miles from Brescia to Rome and then back again, passing through several of Italy’s most beautiful cities en route. One important change at this year’s edition is that instead of starting on the Thursday, the race will kick off a day earlier, on Wednesday 16 May and end on Saturday 19 May. Several major changes have been made to the route. This year, thanks to significant repair works on the old road, the convoy will head west through Lucca, and then on to Versilia, between Sarzana and the Passo della Cisa, along the stretch of road used during the 1949 edition.

1. НДС (итал.: IVA) это налог на добавленную стоимость в отношении товаров и услуг, который входит в систему взимания налога на добавленную стоимость в Европейском Союзе. 2. В некоторых случаях туристы могут получить возмещение НДС. Это возмещение не распространяется на услуги, предоставленные гостиницами, ресторанами, такси или агентствами. 3. Вы можете иметь право на возмещение НДС, если: • вы не являетесь резидентом ЕС; • приобретенные товары предназначены только для личного или семейного пользования, и перевозятся в вашем багаже; • общая стоимость приобретенных товаров превышает 154,94 евро (с учетом НДС); • факт покупки доказан счетом. Этот счет должен включать описание приобретенных товаров, ваши личные данные, а также данные вашего паспорта или любого другого эквивалентного документа; • товары покидают территорию ЕС до конца третьего месяца после месяца их приобретения; • соблюдены предусмотренные таможенные формальности; • счет возвращен в итальянский магазин в течение четырех месяцев с момента совершения покупки. 4. Приобретенные товары и соответствующий счет должны быть предъявлены на таможне при выезде с территории ЕС (если вы собираетесь упаковать купленные товары в багаж при регистрации, то вы должны посетить таможню ДО регистрации на рейс). 5. После выезда с территории ЕС турист должен вернуть оригинал счета, надлежащим образом завизированный таможенным органом, в итальянский магазин. Этот счет необходимо вернуть в течение четырех месяцев со дня выдачи документа. 6. Возврат может осуществить непосредственно итальянский магазин (однако, убедитесь, что на окне выбранного вами магазина имеется надпись “Tax Free Shopping” или “Euro Tax Free”). 7. Некоторые компании, занимающиеся беспошлинным шопингом, могут немедленно возвращать НДС наличными, когда товар покидает территорию Италии или ЕС (таким образом освобождая туриста от обязательства вернуть счет в магазин). Однако, эта процедура применяется только в крупных международных аэропортах и в местах пересечения границ. Большинство крупных универмагов имеет пункты возврата НДС. 8. The perfume of Modica chocolate A new sophisticated technique of aromatization is combined with an age-old recipe. The result is an even more delicious, unique and recognizable type of chocolate infused with all the aromas and passion of Sicily. By Elena Binda

s far as chocolate connoisseurs are concerned, the term ‘Modica chocolate’ is not simply an indication of its geographic origin. It is used to describe a particular type of rustic, grainy chocolate that has an unusual and deliciously crunchy texture. This chocolate is ‘cold worked’ following an ancient Aztec recipe which the Spanish - the conquistadors of South America and subsequently the rulers of Sicily - brought back to the island. The recipe was enthusiastically

welcomed and re-worked by local chocolatiers who transformed it into a local specialty that has now become an attraction in its own right. Modica is one of Southern Sicily’s most atmospheric towns and the birthplace of Nobel prize-winning poet Salvatore Quasimodo. It is renowned for its Baroque art and delicious chocolate which draws visitors from all over the world. Among its numerous artisanal workshops, one of the most notable is Sabadì, a chocolate shop founded by Simone Sabaini, a Veronese who fell in love with the region. His workshop, dedicated to the research and production of chocolate, and his tasting space are both located in the centre of Modica, just steps from the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Sabaini is faithful to a philosophy rooted in tradition that focuses on strong links to the region and ‘slow’ living. He is committed to the redevelopment of various ‘living spaces’ in the historic centre. A few months ago, Sabaini embarked on a new venture, his catalogue now features a new type of ‘perfumed’ chocolate in addition to his traditional varieties. This chocolate is processed according to a lengthy, complex technique which

guarantees the unique absorption of aromas. Chocolate lovers can now enjoy limited edition bars flavoured with tobacco, tea, flowers, herbs, spices, resins and barrique (oak wood). Flavours featured include ultra-rare Perique and Latakia tobaccos, Myrrh and Ethiopian Olibanum resin, highly sought-after smoked Chinese or toasted Mate teas, mandarin blossoms harvested in the nearby citrus groves or the wood used for barrels infused with the aroma of the finest wines and spirits in the world. All these elements are organic, selected with painstaking attention to detail; each having different characteristics, to obtain a variety ranging from the most delicate to the strongest, most pronounced essences. Although these specialty chocolates can be purchased online, those visiting the town can sample it firsthand at Sabadì’s Modican ‘cellar’; a wonderful place to taste, learn about and experience the secrets of this unique chocolate!
