& SPECIAL GUEST JOSHUA BURNSIDE St. George’s Church • 8.30pm (Doors 8pm) • €17/€15 Lisa O’Neill from County Cavan is a songwriter like no other. Her roots may be sourced in folk and traditional music but her work opens up a landscape beyond any settled sense of genre. On her last album, ‘Pothole in the Sky’, she set her incisive voice against impressionistic instrumental back-drops, like Margaret Barry colluding with the ‘Dirty Three’ or some such meeting of minds. Lisa is not shy of collaboration, and her performances across Ireland, Europe and beyond have featured many great musicians of all ages and traditions. In January, she joined a stellar cast of musicians to celebrate Shane McGowan’s birthday at the National Concert

‘Hands down one of the most-forward thinking folk artists from these shores’

Hall. Her debut release ‘Has an Album’ was followed in 2013 by Choice-nominated ‘Same Cloth or Not’. Her most recent album ‘Pothole in the Sky’ was released to critical acclaim and is filled with tension and emotion, contextualizing themes of love, loss, heartache and sorrow today through referencing tales from the past with beauty, honesty and defiance. Joshua Burnside is an experimental folk artist based in Belfast, and the most recent recipient of the Northern Ireland Music Prize for his debut album ‘Ephrata’, released last year. The album was highly praised by The Sunday Times and The Irish Times and received huge support from BBC DJ’s such as Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Guy Garvey and Phil Taggart.

HOTHOUSE FLOWERS Landmark Central @ The Landmark Hotel Friday 13th July • €22 • Doors 8pm • Fully Standing Concert

Something amazing happens when Hothouse Flowers step onto the stage - something that has been shaped by over thirty years of singing and playing all over the world, yet no two shows have ever been the same! There is a sense of musical adventure - an impulse to reach new heights and depths in music where the unspoken aim is that the band and the audience become one and the world becomes a different place for a while. Hothouse Flowers are a rock n’roll band; a traditional band and a soul band to name but a few! Despite the bands lengthy career, which is now heading into its fourth decade there is a sense of unfinished business.

Every night they want to play the best gig they have ever played and take the musical risks that can maybe make that possible. There are still songs to be written and emotions to share. Whether it’s in a tiny club, an arena or in a festival field there is a sense that the best is yet to come. The bands recent UK tour saw them reveal new material from their brand new album ‘Let’s Do This Thing’ which is out now and available for download on the bands website! A general release is to follow very soon…. Join the legendary Liam Ó Maonlaí, Fiachna Ó’Braonain and gang for a special night of music pre-booking advised!

DR. HEATHER LAIRD St. George’s Church • 2pm • €5 / €15 for double ticket* * double ticket admission to Patrick McCabe event afterwards In Ireland we are currently living through a decade of centenaries marking a chain of events in Irish history that commenced with the introduction of the Third Home Rule Bill in the British House of Commons in 1912 and concluded with the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922. But history should not only be about what happened in the past, but what else might conceivably have happened. In this lecture Dr. Heather Laird re-imagines commemoration, proposing ways that we can both make the roads untaken in history visible and ‘remember’ them. Recognising that the past could have been 20

other than it was and that it could have given rise to other possible futures can help us in the difficult but necessary process of imaging our future as both different to and better than the here and now. Dr. Heather Laird is a lecturer in the School of English, University College Cork; a postcolonial scholar whose research interests include theories and practices of resistance, critical/radical historical frameworks and Irish culture. Her most recent publication, Commemoration (2018), was published as part of the ‘Síreacht: Longings for Another Ireland’ series.

HIGH LONESOME WORDS & MUSIC FROM THE HEARTLAND St. George’s Church • 3.30pm • €12 / €15 for double ticket* * double ticket admission to Dr. Heather Laird lecture Author Patrick McCabe celebrates the ‘heartland’ country of the soul; dark and yet, simultaneously, magnesium-bright. If one could conceive of a cottage fire being raked late at night as a scratchy phonograph playing Joyce and Count John Mc Cormack begins its revolutions somewhere afar in the regions of hyperspace, as the door is knocked and a lady selling scones with human eyes arrives in the rain, then perhaps they might find themselves coming close. This is the old weird, indomitable Celtic heart-Ulysses meets The Dandy and Oor Wullie.Or, if you like, The Carter Family on the moon... 20

Patrick McCabe was born in Clones, Co Monaghan in 1955. Shortlisted twice for the Man Booker Prize and winner of The Irish Times Fiction Award for The Butcher Boy, his novels include The Dead School, Breakfast on Pluto, Hello Mr Bones, Winterwood and Heartland. He has also written for radio, stage and screen, is married with two adult children and is a member of Aosdana.
