Location: May Pen, Clarendon

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project was the renovation of a previously abandoned building in a suitable location within the town into a mall to promote traffic and business to the surrounding areas.

Location: May Pen, Clarendon

This was my final project during my journey at Lloyd J. robinson’s and Associates. I consider it a culmination of everything I learned during my time there such as utilizing ArchiCAD, Lumion and my ability to operate an unmanned drone. The project is located in May Pen, Clarendon.

Site location

Using a combination of google maps initially to get the location of the building which is on Manchester Avenue main road. This was also an opportunity for me to utilize my skills in operating a UAV as the shots shown here were taken by yours truly using a DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone to get a better view of the building and the surrounding context.

Project Details: Post Graduate (DM Planning and Associates)

Project Date: 2023

Location: St. Andrew

This was my only project during my time at DM Planning and Associates, and though my time there was brief, it afforded me an opportunity to develop my skills in a brand new rendering software known as D5 Render. So for this project, where the plans and 3D models were already complete, my objective was to utilize D5 Render to bring the finalized vision of this space to life.

The main selling point of this project are the amenities located on the roof, that being the rooftop bar/dining area. There is also a rooftop garden that serves as an area to relax and unwind. However, the main focus of this project was to bring to life a vision of an area where people can enjoy the evening/night view of the city while enjoying a nice meal, or any refreshment of sorts with a beautiful ambiance brought by the earthen aesthetic of the bar and dining area.

Although the rooftop amenities are the primary focus of this project, the interiors are by no means to be ignored in any way. The reception area, as well as the waiting area leading uptairs, is fitted with an off white aesthetic that gives off a formal, yet soothing feeling to those whom may enter this space.

The year is 2092, the much anticipated 400 year anniversary of the Port Royal earthquake of 1692, and Jamaica now experiences an average of 10 hurricanes per year. However, despite the climatic challenges, Jamaica has risen to an economic standing parallel to the world’s wealthiest country, Singapore. Jamaica’s population has now increased to a total of 20 million residents.

A - ENTRY

One of the entry points into the tower, it highlights its scale and beauty while also simultaneously inviting one to enjoy the garden space around as you make your way inside to the ground level.

B - GROUND LEVEL

A key aspect of this space was that it did not interrupt the flow of traffic in any way, but rather enhances a person’s drive through it with a series of lights and cobblestone aesthetic.

This render, by using Lumion, allows you to get a visual of my vision for this 2 bedroom layout and how all of the limited space is maximized while also offering each section of the apartment to feel distinct from the other.

PURE PRESENCE

The idea for this project is to have a food and drink museum focused on the production process of various wines using different fruits. The design scheme is one that would be shaped like a wine barrel with a rustic feel, as well as a courtyard with different fruits growing for tasting

concept

Drawing inspiration from the curved shape of the interior of the Lahofer Winery, a concept of using a wine barrel shape for the structure was born, further tying in to the purpose of the building, which is the focus of wine production using local materials.

Site Analysis

The site allocated is site 1, located on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard and across from the Casa Blanca Restaurant. Vehicular traffic on this street is two way, as well as pedestrian traffic. Wind was observed coming from the north and southwest at the time. Due to the nature of the Hip, Strip, noise was also a potential issue observed.

This space, as stated, is the wine cellar where a various assortment of different wines and meads are kept for storage as well as aging in a cool and slightly lit environment

2. WINE TASTING AREA

As well as being able to enjoy the view across the street, this space offers a relaxing ambiance in which visitors can savour the different flavours of wines and meads.

THIS SECTION SHOWS THE DETAILED CONNECTION OF THE LAYERS OF THE STRUCTURE STARTING WITH THE EXTERIOR, WHICH IS COMPRISED OF PRECAST

CONCRETE AND PROTECTS THE INTERIOR FROM THE ELEMENTS, AND THIS EXTERIOR IS SUPPORTED BY A LIGHTWEIGHT YET STURDY ALUMINIUM FRAMING

WHICH ACTS AS THE SKELETON FOR THE STRUCTURE, AND FINALLY THE INTERIOR FINISH, COMPRISED OF A TIMBER CLADDING, MADE UP OF DIFFERENT PANELS, WHICH ARE ATTACHED TO THE ALUMINIUM FRAME TO CREATE A STRONG, LIGHTWEIGHT AND BREATHABLE STRUCTURE.

THIS SECTION SHOWS THE DETAILED CONNECTION OF THE floor and column of the structure. since both primarily consist of timber, concrete was used as the base of the floor as well as the foundation which goes deeper into the earth. the timber column is embedded into the concrete flooring and fitted with steel bearing plates for extra stability and secured with bolts, WHILE A ROUGH FLOORING WAS PLACED ON TOP OF THE CONCRETE SLAB AND TOPPED OFF WITH A TIMBER FLOORING FINISH.
