dining diversity

Once upon a time in Southlake, dinner out was a trio of simple choices: brisket and beans at a family-run BBQ staple, a slice from a mom-and-pop pizzeria, and maybe a Dairy Queen dipped cone for dessert. Fast forward a couple decades, and the city’s dining scene reads more like a world tour than a small-town sampler. Husband and wife outposts now include Thai food with real heat and heart. Sushi spots are now so abundant that local loyalties are being tested. (Sorry, Ra!) Upscale Italian and Mexican spots have wine lists as impressive as their chef-driven dishes. And we’ve even gotten to experience a “Tex-Med” revolution embracing creativity with plenty of goat cheese and garlic.

As Southlake grew in size, it also grew in taste—welcoming residents from across the globe who brought with them cravings for something beyond the usual. The result? A community that eats better, together.

And if you haven’t been paying attention, the French have arrived—en masse. No longer limited to the occasional croissant, our newest hot spots range from the light & airy soufflés at Rise to the sweet and savory crêpes of Sweet Paris. Established favorites like Grapevine’s Chez Fabien and Main Street Bakery have also been a part of the movement. Whether it’s the “marshmallow”-topped tomato bisque at Rise or an apple cinnamon crème brûlée crêpe at Sweet Paris, we continue to expand our palates.

MEET YOUR HEROES IN GRAPEVINE

‘Universe

of Light’ DC Characters Attraction Coming To Gaylord Texan Resort

IIt’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… Superman (and friends) at the Gaylord Texan – in lantern form.

Yet another eye-opening exhibit is now open at the famous Grapevine resort. Running through September 1, this immersive DC Universe lantern exhibit is set to feature more than 1,000 glowing lanterns that will bring to life the iconic superheroes, supervillains and legendary locations like Gotham City. A must-visit for all superhero fans, this attraction is mind-blowing in its size, scope and sheer uniqueness.

Get ready to visit Wonder Woman's homeland, Themyscira, and take a front row seat to an epic battle between the Justice League and an intergalactic foe. Lucky guests will even get a chance to sit inside the famous Batmobile, and a trip through Gotham City is a must. Interactive experiences like a journey through the Fortress of Solitude and a battle of the Justice League will also be available to visitors.

Behind the large, awe-inspiring superheroes is an old-world history. The exhibit showcases the intricate artistry of Zigong, China – known as the Lantern Capital of the World—and was designed by 160 Zigong artisans, whose lantern-making tradition spans more than 1,000 years. Specifically, Zigong artisans have been creating their lantern masterpieces as far back as the Tang and Song dynasties.

“Each impressive superhero lantern is a masterpiece of design and engineering.”
— Martha Neibling, PR Director

To get to Grapevine, the characters and exhibit materials traveled directly from China –nearly 8,000 miles. And now, they’re ready for North Texas residents to take in and enjoy the mixture of Chinese lantern-making heritage and innovation – lit by LED lights.

The lanterns in the ‘Universe of Light’ exhibit will reach heights of up to 24 feet tall and illuminated with thousands of LED lights, showcasing how each impressive superhero lantern is a masterpiece of design and engineering. In all, 30 iconic superheroes and super-villans will be on display, and all will be constructed in the form of glowing lanterns.

The breathtaking size of the attraction as a whole is worth the price of admission. Approximately 200,000 pounds of steel were used in the attraction’s creation, as well a total of 30 miles of silk – the distance between Grapevine and Downtown Dallas – that bring the superheroes and character scenes to life.

Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, available to overnight resort guests and local daytime visitors.

LA LA LAND KIND CAFE OPENS IN SOUTHLAKE

La La Land Kind Cafe has opened its 15th Dallas-Fort Worth location at 2175 E Southlake Blvd #180, transforming the former Snappy Salads space into a haven of warmth, connection and purpose. With its signature lattes, vibrant matcha and elevated toasts, La La Land blends intentional design, heartcentered service and whimsical charm. Each location is thoughtfully designed to immediately draw in customers with its clean and bright aesthetic, joyful music and warm and friendly staff while doling out messages of kindness and compliments. "Kindness first, coffee second," said Founder and CEO Francois Reihani in a press release.

SAM’S CLUBS TO UNDERGO DESIGN OVERHAUL

Sam's Club CEO Chris Nicholas has ordered a storewide remodel for his 600 Clubs located across America. The blueprint for the redesign? The Grapevine location, where customers skip the checkout lines; there aren't even any registers to choose from. Instead, customers scan their products with a mobile app as they place them in their carts. They can then "check out" and pay using the app. When exiting the store, customers pass through a scanner that checks the shopping carts for unscanned items. "This is one of the fastest, most scalable transformations happening in retail today," he said in the company release. "We’re investing with intention—in our fleet, our associates and the member experience—to become the world’s best club retailer."

LUXURY STORAGE SPACES COMING TO COLLEYVILLE

Need a place to store your Bentley? Your collection of 1920's New York Yankees baseball cards? Your grandfather's coin collection? A space will be open for you soon in Colleyville. Luxury garages will be built along Colleyville Boulevard -- between Oak Pointe Drive and Industrial Boulevard -- after approval from Colleyville City Council earlier this month. The units will cost between $150,000 and $575,000, according to Colleyville city documents. Construction on the units will begin in about one year. Exactly 49 garages will be available for rent, according to documents.

RA SUSHI CLOSES IN SOUTHLAKE’S PARK VILLAGE

Park Village-staple RA Sushi is no more, officially closing in late May. The Japanese-inspired restaurant served sushi and Japanese fusion cuisine. It opened in Southlake in September 2015, and the first RA Sushi opened in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1997. The location in Addison is still open. The Plano location is also permanently closed.

CLAIRE’S SAYS GOODBYE TO SOUTHLAKE

'Tween hearts around Southlake are breaking. After years of serving up reasonably priced sparkly accessories, trendy jewelry and ear piercings, Claire’s has officially closed its doors at the Shops of Southlake. The beloved retail chain has been a staple in the shopping center, offering affordable fashion finds and a touch of nostalgia for longtime locals. The closing reflects a larger shift in national retail trends, as brick-and-mortar stores face skyrocketing rents and increasing pressure from online competitors. For many, the end of Claire’s marks more than just the loss of a store—it’s the closing of a chapter filled with friendship bracelets, first earrings and memories made in glitter-lined aisles.

THE HOT AND COLD TAKEOVER OF SOUTHLAKE’S WELLNESS SCENE

Wellness trends come and go, but few are offering quite the same jolt as contrast therapy.

The ancient practice of alternating between heat and cold is now a favorite among athletes, high-performers and anyone seeking a natural way to reduce inflammation, boost circulation and reset the nervous system. And it’s not just happening in elite recovery clinics or mountain spas—Southlake has officially embraced the contrast through a series of new local offerings..

From national chains to boutique concepts, contrast therapy is catching fire, and Southlake has is down cold. Perspire Sauna Studio, which opened in early May, pairs its infrared sauna experience with integrated red light therapy and “SNØ Showers” to offer a unique take on the contrast ritual. There’s also Southlake’s latest wellness addition, Pause Studio, which offers private contrast therapy suites designed for both beginners and seasoned plungers, complete with breathwork support and luxe design.

“We’re really in the rest and recovery business,” says Alex McClure, owner of Perspire Southlake (PerspireSaunaStudio. com). “You work out, you eat right, you stretch—but you also have to let your body heal. That’s where we come in.”

Life Time Fitness (LifeTime.life), which recently announced cold plunges added to 70 clubs nationwide—already featured in its Colleyville and Westlake locations—is also betting big on demand for science-backed recovery.

in STARK CONTRAST

The Science of the Switch

The concept behind contrast therapy is simple: expose the body to heat, then follow it with an icy shock. But the impact is profound. The initial heat exposure induces vasodilation, increasing circulation and warming the body to the core. The subsequent cold plunge or shower causes rapid vasoconstriction, driving blood back to the body’s vital organs. Once you exit the cold, that oxygen-rich blood rushes to the extremities, delivering a post-therapy euphoria that’s hard to describe but impossible to forget.

“It awakens your body and mind,” says Erin Kobus, coowner of Pause Studio (PauseStudio.com). “It’s a reset. You’re getting your best blood flowing to your core to protect you—and then all of that gets redistributed. It’s like an internal power wash.”

Beginners are encouraged to start with short durations, such as 30 seconds, and gradually build up their tolerance. "While everyone is talking about cold plunge, it isn't about how long you can stay in," says Danny King, Life Time's Director of Recovery and Performance. "We encourage people to talk with one of our experts to understand the proper techniques and timing. This helps to avoid potential risks and achieve the best possible outcomes for your health and wellness."

“Cold-water therapy is one of the most effective ways to recharge your body and mind,” he continues. “By spending just 30 seconds in a cold plunge, you can boost your energy, improve your sleep and build mental resilience. It's a simple yet powerful tool for recovery… providing unparalleled opportunities for our members to live healthy, happy lives.”

Benefits of Infrared Sauna

While cold therapy often gets the spotlight, infrared saunas bring powerful benefits of their own—and they’re a key part of the contrast equation. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, infrared saunas use infrared light to warm the body directly, penetrating deep into muscles and tissues.

The result? A detoxifying sweat that’s easier to tolerate and more effective for recovery. Infrared saunas are known to help reduce inflammation, ease muscle soreness and joint pain, promote deeper sleep, improve skin clarity and texture and burn calories.

At Perspire Sauna Studio, each session includes built-in red light therapy to enhance the benefits even further. Red light targets surface-level issues such as skin tone, blemishes and inflammation while supporting collagen production and cellular repair. "While you're recovering [in the infrared sauna], you're also burning about 400 calories—it's the equivalent of walking two miles," says McClure. "That's one of the things I love most about it."

“We wanted to make it full-spectrum wellness,” says McClure. “You get heat, light and cold, all in one experience.”

Make It Personal

Pause Studio is purposefully designed to be beginnerfriendly, yet scalable for seasoned cold plungers. Each suite offers privacy, breathwork guidance and optional water movement for a more intense cold experience. “When you move the water, your body can’t form a thermal barrier,” explains Kobus. “That keeps you cold, which is exactly the point.”

At Perspire, the cold comes in the form of a high-powered shower that blasts 45-degree water for 45 seconds af-

ter a long infrared sauna session. The sauna includes builtin red light therapy—a rarity in the industry. “We wanted to make it full-spectrum wellness,” McClure says. “You get heat, light and cold, all in one experience.”

Life Time Fitness offers a more traditional contrast setup that can seamlessly become part of any wellness routine, with dedicated plunge tubs and saunas situated inside an upscale gym environment. Their model focuses on accessibility and efficiency—ideal for those looking to recover quickly after a workout.

Recovery, Meet Resilience

Beyond physical benefits like reduced inflammation and muscle recovery, contrast therapy is increasingly seen as a mental resilience tool. At Pause, breathwork plays a critical role in extending time in the plunge and calming the nervous system. “You’re training your body to handle stress,” says Ashley Memmolo, the general manager of Pause.

“If you can manage your breath and stay calm in a 48-degree plunge, that strength translates to real-life situations.”

McClure agrees. “You have to focus on breathing,” he says of the SNØ Showers. “Otherwise, your body freaks out. But once you learn to regulate, you feel alive again.”

Both studios emphasize that contrast therapy isn’t just a physical trend—it’s a practice in self-awareness. “There are days you push for three minutes. Other days, two is enough,” says Kobus. “The key is learning to listen to your

IT’S A FRENCH CULINARY INVASION

SOUTHLAKE EMBRACES ITS INNER CHIC

If recent trends are any indication, Southlake is trading in its suburban staples for something with a little more “je ne sais quoi.” From soufflés and crêpes to impressionist art, curated wine clubs, and design trends that channel the charm of Paris, the city is embracing a French style unlike anything North Texas has seen before.

Yes, the French have officially invaded. At Gallery 19C, a refined art space in the heart of Southlake, 19th-century works influenced by the great Paris salons anchor the walls, offering art lovers a direct line to the golden age of French creativity. Local wine clubs are booming too, many of them with a distinctly European sensibility: curated tastings, vintage-focused dinners and bottles that beg to be uncorked over long, unhurried conversations.

Even boutique storefronts and interior design seem to echo this new French renaissance — timeless, elevated and effortlessly chic. Southlake’s interior design scene is firmly catching the French wave. According to Susan Semmelman of Semmelmann Interiors, clients are increasingly drawn to spaces that prioritize warmth, individuality and artistic storytelling—hallmarks of Parisian style. Think layered textures, sculptural lighting, artisan finishes and rich hues like plum, ochre and berry red—colors that feel more like curated paintings than passing trends.

“Our clients want homes that feel collected and expressive, not mass-produced,” Susan explains. Much like a Paris apartment, the goal is effortless elegance—homes that don’t just look beautiful but feel intentional, soulful and distinctly lived-in.

Southlake’s French invasion isn’t about mimicry. It’s about mindset. A way of living that favors elegance over excess, slow over fast, and depth over convenience.

A Taste of France

Nowhere is this French influence more pronounced than in our culinary scene. This hotbed of Tex-Mex staples and polished Amer ican fare is now embracing French flavors and traditions with open arms. With the recent arrivals of Rise Soufflé and Sweet Paris, plus established favorites like D’Caramel, Cream & Crepes Café, and the Grapevine trio of Piaf Kitchen + Wine Bar, Chez Fabien and Main Street Bakery, the French have landed — and they brought wine.

Founded in Dallas nearly two decades ago, Rise Soufflé began as a charming, experimental salon de soufflé tucked away on Lov ers Lane. The concept quickly gained cult status among locals for its dedication to craft, comfort and culinary artistry. Southlake marks the growing chain's sixth location, following successful out posts in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano and Tulsa. The concept quickly gained status among locals for its dedication to craft, comfort and culinary artistry.

Piaf's signature Fly Me Away cocktail, featuring a mix of Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka, Blue Curaçao, lemon juice and simple syrup.

“Rise is not just a place to eat,” Rise CEO Chris Florczak explains. “It’s an experience — every detail is intentional.”

And he means that quite literally. From antique silver spoons to reclaimed wood finishes and vintage French light fixtures, every Rise location feels like a portal to the French countryside. Even better, no two are quite alike. The Southlake location raises the bar for its unassuming surroundings, nestled near a Hobby Lobby and Urban Air Trampoline Park, proving that fine dining can flourish even in the most unexpected corners.

“You’ll know you’re at a Rise, but each one has its own soul,” Florczak says. “We want you to slow down and experience everything — the texture of the linens, the weight of a vintage spoon, the aroma of the truffle oil hitting a hot soufflé as it leaves the kitchen.”

That philosophy carries through in the food. The fan-favorite Marshmallow Soup—a velvety tomato bisque topped with goat cheese “marshmallows”—is as playful as it is rich. The truffled mushroom soufflé is a Florczak favorite, and rotating artisan cheese boards encourage long, wine-filled conversations.

And while soufflés are famously finicky, Rise has cracked the code with custom-built ovens and precision techniques that let guests enjoy perfect soufflés in just 15–18 minutes.

“It’s the combination of art and science,” Florczak says. “The magic is in the repetition, the finesse. It’s about fresh ingredients, thoughtful preparation and creating something memorable.”

The decision to open in Southlake wasn’t a shot in the dark—it was the answer to years of local demand. Many Rise regulars from Dallas and Fort Worth had relocated to Southlake and were eager to see the concept closer to home.

“We kept hearing the same thing,” Florczak says. “‘We used to live by your original Inwood Village location [in Dallas], and now we’re raising our families out here.’ It was a no-brainer.”

For a restaurant that prides itself on generational dining, Southlake was an ideal fit.

“We serve guests who are three and guests who are 95,” he adds. “We host baby showers, bridal brunches, Sunday lunches. It’s about coming together around the table—slowly, joyfully, intentionally.”

D'Caramel: Pastry Artistry in Southlake

Adding to Southlake's French flair is D'Caramel Patisserie, a family-owned bakery located in the Kimball Park Shopping Center. Helmed by internationally trained pastry chef Anna Narinan, D'Caramel offers a refined pastry palette that transports patrons to Europe with every bite. Just swing by on any given Saturday to see the line stretching down the block as proof of concept.

After three years of planning and renovating a former medical office, D'Caramel includes an open kitchen with a full back-of-house view, quaint seating areas and a floor-to-ceiling window showcasing scenic displays like a gingerbread Eiffel Tower or a chocolate carousel.

Chef Anna's creations include Paris-Brest, éclairs, macarons, croissants, three-dimensional tarts, canelé,

individual cakes and seasonal delights such as the French bûche de Noël. Her training under world-renowned pastry chefs from France, Spain and beyond informs her unique recipes, which utilize authentic ingredients like French fruit puree, Belgian chocolate and Madagascan vanilla beans.

“I believe the pastry world is very creative,” Anna says. “[There’s] a lot of space for creating something new.”

Sweet Paris: A Chic Counterpart

Just down the road in Southlake Town Square, another French gem has already become a fan favorite. Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café opened its doors last fall with a mission to bring casual elegance and craveable crêpes to the neighborhood—and so far, it’s working.

“We’re excited to see Sweet Paris grow,” says cofounder and CEO Allison Chavez. “Southlake Town Square is the optimal location for our entrance into the market with its vibrant shops and upscale boutiques.”

Locally owned and operated by Edward and Cynthia Hymes, the new café has transformed the former Rockfish Seafood Grill space into a bright, inviting café. With cozy seating, ambient lighting and a spacious patio ideal for brunch dates or post-shopping indulgence, it exudes Parisian charm without feeling pretentious.

“We started out as customers of Sweet Paris and have frequented many of its Texas locations,” Edward Hymes shares. “We are excited to continue our love for Sweet Paris as strategic partners, building on its legacy in Texas while at the same time creating our own family legacy.”

The menu spans both day and night, offering savory breakfast crêpes filled with everything from smoked salmon and feta-ricotta béchamel to chicken alfredo and Philly cheesesteak. Sweet selections include cookie butter, dulce de leche, lemon sugar and a standout apple cinnamon crème brûlée crêpe that’s quickly becoming a local favorite.

Between its relaxing atmosphere, Instagram-worthy décor and a cocktail list designed for lingering, Sweet Paris has struck a balance between cozy and elevated—very much in line with Southlake’s evolving tastes.

Grapevine’s French Cornerstones

In the heart of Historic Grapevine, Main Street Bakery has long served as a charming outpost of French pastry tradition. Known for its fresh-baked breads, buttery croissants, and award-winning desserts, the bakery also offers breakfast favorites, soups, salads, and casual café fare in a relaxed, European-inspired setting. Whether you're grabbing a cappuccino and tart to go or settling in for a cozy morning with quiche and conversation, Main Street Bakery brings a slice of Paris to Texas with every bite.

Next door, the story continues at Chez Fabien, a fullservice French bistro that blends Old World elegance with approachable, locally inspired cuisine. Here, guests can enjoy dishes like mussels in white wine sauce, duck confit, short ribs, or shrimp and grits — all enhanced by a glass of Bordeaux or a handcrafted cocktail. On weekends, live music and brunch add to the allure, making it a go-to for both casual gatherings and celebratory nights out.

Beef Bourguignon at Chef Fabien

All three establishments — Main Street Bakery, Chez Fabien and Piaf Kitchen + Wine Bar — are owned and operated by Chef Fabien Goury and his wife, Yasmine Bohsali. Their culinary journey began in 2000 with the bakery and grew organically as demand flourished. Piaf, their most recent venture, opened in 2019 and brings a Mediterranean twist to the family’s repertoire, complete with a rooftop bar and stylish, globally influenced menu. Named after the French word for sparrow — and a nod to legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf — the restaurant captures the couple’s passion for sophisticated yet soulful cuisine.

More Than a Trend

So why the sudden surge in French influence? Perhaps it’s a response to our hyper-speed culture: fast food, fast emails, fast everything. The French, in contrast, believe in savoring — meals, moments and each other.

This shift toward intentionality is echoed in the success of Rise, where diners are encouraged to linger, and in Sweet Paris, where the crêpe is both a dish and a ritual. Both brands — along with D’Caramel’s delicate pastries, Main Street’s buttery croissants, Piaf’s rooftop romance and Gallery 19C’s curatorial nod to Parisian art history — speak to a growing desire not just for good food, but for culture, atmosphere and connection.

You can see it in the curated wine flights. You can taste it in the duck confit. You can feel it in the linen napkins and the way time seems to stretch during a long lunch on the patio. And maybe — just maybe — it’s proof that you don’t need a passport to feel transported. Sometimes, all it takes is a soufflé and a sidewalk table.

Beyond The Wishbone With Debut Author Isabel Bolt

Former longtime Southlake resident Isabel Bolt knows a thing or two about starting over. She’s done it more than once—and usually not by choice. But along the way, she has turned every detour into a destination and recently stitched those experiences into her first book, “The Secret To Happiness Is Low Expectations: Living With A Funny Bone, A Wishbone, And A Backbone,” a heartfelt patchwork of humor, heartbreak and unexpected grace. From breast cancer and divorce to lake house dreams and online dating, this resilient Dragon mom has navigated it all with vulnerability and humor. At 67, she is embracing her next act as an author, proving it’s never too late to turn the chaos of everyday life into a story worth telling.

THE BOOK BEGAN… as a scrapbook. I’d jot things down on Post-its, napkins, scraps of paper—things the boys said, funny moments, little scenes from life. Eventually I realized I was keeping a kind of ad hoc journal. The hardest part was figuring out what the book should be about. But then I landed on the idea that so many of the expectations I had were never realized—and often, something better did.

IF HUMOR ISN’T A LOVE LANGUAGE… it should be. It bonds people like nothing else. Everyone is so serious these days, so if I can help someone see the magic in everyday life, I’ve done what I set out to do.

THE SUBTITLE CAME FROM… a birthday gift. My friend Karen gave me a giant gold wishbone years ago. The card said, “Every woman needs a funny bone, a backbone and a wishbone.” And it stuck with me. The funny bone is for humor, the wishbone is for dreams, and the backbone is for courage. That became the book’s whole message.

I THINK A LOT ABOUT… what success is supposed to look like. The truth is, it rarely resembles the vision you had at 25. But sometimes, the detours are where you find the real treasure. There’s a quote in the book that says you find the extraordinary in the ordinary—and I believe that is the carbonation of life. Too often, you only see it when you look in the rearview mirror.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT SOUTHLAKE… was being part of its golden era in the mid 1990s. We moved here by accident, really—we were looking in North Dallas and

just took a drive one Sunday. But something about it felt right. It wasn’t about the big houses; it was about the people, the community, the sense that we were all building something together. I made lifelong friends here. The football program was the hub of everything for us moms, and White’s Chapel was a big part of our lives too.

I USED TO SAY… life would be perfect if I could arrange people, places annd situations in a particular order and then keep it all together. But the truth is that the real pearls look more like a patchwork quilt that's not sewn together yet.

SOME OF THE BOOK’S BEST MOMENTS… are just about regular life. It's like "Seinfeld," really - stories about nothing, yet everything. Life's richest stuff is often the mundane. The chapter titles say it all. Like "The Labor Comes After The Delivery" (having kids), "If I can Just Make It Through This Week" (juggling career) and "Playing With Matches" (online dating).

I ALMOST DIDN’T PUBLISH IT… because I thought maybe it was too personal, or that nobody would care. I figured I’d just give it to my kids as a keepsake. But then my old boss called and said, “Isabel, you always want to know how the story ends before you’ve lived it. Just let go.” And I did. I took a chance, and it's been a joyride. I can only tell the truth and hope [people] laugh a little along the way.

AT 67, I’M STILL… learning, still writing, still laughing. The scrapbook isn’t finished. And who knows? Maybe there are more chapters still to come.

Fort Worth Distilleries Rustle Up Award-Winning Whiskey

Fort Worth’s vibrant history and rich culture aren’t just found in its stockyards or art museums—it’s alive in its distilleries, too.

Three stand out: Oak & Eden, with its brandnew tasting room, Blackland Distillery, where visitors create their own whiskey, and TX Whiskey Ranch, with its unique, signature flavors.

Whether you're a connoisseur of fine liquor or simply enjoy savoring a well-crafted cocktail, Fort Worth offers a dynamic selection worth exploring. Each one tells its own unique story, blending tradition, innovation and a whole lot of Texas flavor.

Fort Worth’s New Whiskey Haven

Oak & Eden, the Southlake-based whiskey brand that has been revolutionizing the spirits industry with its patented in-bottle finishing technique, is making its mark in Cowtown.

Their new Fort Worth tasting room in the Clearfork District is more than a bar – it’s an experience. Inspired by their Bridgeport flagship location, this Fort Worth destination offers whiskey enthusiasts the opportunity to create their own customized bottles. Guests can select everything—from their whiskey base to the wood spire, toast level and infusion flavors—to craft a one-of-a-kind bottle tailored to their tastes.

At the heart of Oak & Eden’s creations lies the aforementioned wood spire. After years of experimentation, the founders, Joe Giildenzopf, Jamie Giildenzopf and Brad Neathery, perfected the art of in-bottle finishing. This method involves placing a carefully treated, toasted spire of oak or other woods directly into the bottle, allowing the whiskey to continue maturing and developing unique flavor profiles even after it’s sealed.

Beyond wood, Oak & Eden has taken it up a notch with an infused series of spirits featuring spires soaked in flavors like cabernet sauvignon, Caribbean rum and cold brew coffee. The founders will also be experimenting with other infusions at the Fort Worth location, such as elderflower, Coca-Cola extract and OakAndEden.com

Activities Abound At Blackland Distillery

Known for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship, Blackland offers an impressive lineup of spirits, including vodka, gin, bourbon, rye whiskey and Texas pecan brown sugar bourbon. The distillery also prioritizes sourcing grains from Texas farmers, so visitors are supporting a true homegrown business.

Blackland is a paradise for spirit enthusiasts who are more hands-on. Located in The Foundry District of Fort Worth, Blackland’s offers behind-the-scenes tours, guided tastings and workshops led by Master Distiller Ezra Cox, who will help you create your own gin, vodka or whiskey-based spirit.

Of course, there’s a seat for the casual sippers, as well. Walkins for a cocktail - or two - are more than welcome, but tours and tastings do require a reservation. Blackland’s tasting room and cocktail lounge offer a sophisticated setting to enjoy its spirits. Guests can indulge in 10 to 15 handcrafted cocktails made with Blackland spirits, served at a marble-topped horseshoe bar or in velvet-upholstered banquettes. BlacklandDistillery.com

TX Whiskey Remains A Classic

Tradition meets modern craftsmanship at TX Whiskey Ranch, creating an inviting atmosphere for whiskey lovers and adventure seekers alike. The home of the famous TX Whiskey, the 112-acre ranch – currently the largest whiskey distillery west of the Mississippi River – is located on the historic Glen Garden Country Club grounds and creates spirits using locally sourced ingredients, including their signature yeast strain harvested from a Texas pecan.

TX Whiskey Ranch boasts state-of-the-art distilling equipment, including a 50-foot copper column still and the world’s first “doubler” designed with sight windows, allowing visitors to witness the distillation process firsthand. The facility's production capacity enables the creation of up to 135 barrels of whiskey per day, making it a significant player in the industry .

The bar is also a must-visit. Once you pull up a stool, patrons can sip on TX Straight Bourbon (notes of caramel, vanilla and warm spices), TX Blended Whiskey (a creamy body good for sipping neat or mixed in a cocktail) or other limited-edition

Everything a whiskey enthusiast could dream up is available on the grounds of the Whiskey Ranch: behind-the-scenes tours that take you deep into the whiskey making process; live music and festivals; the chance to make your own whiskey; and a gift shop full of TX Whiskey merchandise. TXWhiskey.com

p. 52 NICE & EASY Take a sun-soaked escape on the French Riviera

The French Riviera’s Crown Jewel Sun, Jazz And Easy Getaways In Nice

There’s a reason that the French Riviera has long been the epitome of French chic. While next door Cannes, known for its glamorous beaches and eponymous film festival, might get the most attention, Nice draws crowds with its laid back vibes, vibrant old town and incredible food.

In July, the city turns the dial even higher— thanks to the legendary Nice Jazz Festival—and there’s truly no better time to soak in the sunshine, the music and the unmistakable magic of the Mediterranean. Whether you’re clinking glasses by the sea, browsing an art gallery or following the sound of a saxophone into the night, one thing’s for sure: in this city, summer doesn’t just shine – it sings.

Catch the Rhythm:

Every July, jazz takes over the heart of Nice, transforming the city into a veritable concert hall. Launched in 1948 and one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world, the Nice Jazz Festival has hosted everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Miles Davis.

This year’s edition, running July 24–27, 2025, promises 28 dynamic concerts at Place Masséna and Théâtre de Verdure, with big names like Jorja Smith, Raye, Masego and Santa in the spotlight. Expect an atmosphere where every street corner hums with energy, the sea breeze carries the music and locals and visitors alike dance their way into the night. Whether you splurge for a front-row seat or catch the buzz from a nearby café terrace, this is a festival experience you won’t forget.

Strolling, Shopping And Soaking It In

Beyond the festival stages, Nice’s everyday charms deserve their own spotlight. Start in Vieux Nice, a labyrinth of cobbled alleys, sun-bleached shutters and overflowing market stalls. At Cours Saleya, shop for fresh produce, flowers and Provençal souvenirs, or sip an espresso and people-watch under candy-striped awnings.

Don't miss a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, where the light shifts into gold as evening falls. For the best view in town, hike—or take the elevator—up to Colline du Château, where the rooftops tumble down toward the dazzling Baie des Anges.

Need a cultural fix? The Musée Matisse and Musée Marc Chagall show how Nice’s shimmering light inspired two of the 20th century’s most beloved artists.

Flavors to Savor

The culinary scene in Nice is pure sunshine on a plate. Snack on “socca,” a crispy chickpea pancake that's practically a local religion. Grab a slice of “pissaladière” (caramelized onions, olives, anchovies) from a bakery window. And, of course, no trip to Nice would be complete without tasting a real Salad Niçoise—where tomatoes taste like summer itself.

Head to small, no-fuss spots off the tourist trail or linger at the lively Marché de la Libération, where you can find fresh from the farm produce, delectable cheeses and fish, surrounded by lively eateries with ample outdoor seating. Take it all in with a glass of chilled Provençal rosé, and you’ll finally understand firsthand the meaning of “la vie en rose.”

A Gateway to Riviera Adventures

One of the city's best-kept secrets? It’s the perfect home base for day-tripping along the coast. Cannes and its luxe boutiques are just a quick train ride away. Monte Carlo offers casino glamour and yacht-spotting like nowhere else. And inland, the fragrant fields and ateliers of Grasse—the world’s perfume capital—await your exploration.

With trains, buses, and car rentals at your fingertips, it’s easy to hop between sparkling beaches and hilltop villages without missing a beat.

Practical Magic: Getting There and Getting Around

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport makes arriving a breeze, with direct flights from across Europe and beyond. From there, trams, trains, and buses connect you to the city center—and to Riviera towns waiting to be explored.

Book festival tickets early if you’re planning your trip around the music. And while most people speak some English, it never hurts to dust off the Duolingo subscription – a few bonjours and mercis will win you bonus smiles. At least more than you’ll get in Paris.
