College teachers were disappointed and problematic with the implementation of this program because of the great impact it will cause not only to the school they belong but basically to their own career. Other youths don’t think about entering Senior High school because of their negative notion about the program. Adding two years in high school will cause big challenge for all of us, doubts and confusions will arise. But in the end we should believe with its good intention and the big changes it will bring to the lives of every Filipino. n

The End of Four-Year Legacy “THE SECRET of change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. This famous line of Socrates fully explains the big leap that the Department of Education has taken in adding two more years in Secondary Education which is known as Senior High School. In Asia, Philippines is the only country offering 10-year basic education. We have seen how progressive our neighboring countries are and we cannot deny the fact that the education plays a big role in molding and uplifting ones society. Once

upon a time Philippines have a rich and stable economy but, these are only evident in the pages of our history. The problem of the government is “how to sustain such development?” The government rooted out all the possible causes of poverty that has great impact to the progress of our economy. One of which is lack of proper education, the end of Revised Basic Education Program is just the beginning of a new journey embarking to a greater future not only to the lives of every high school students but as well as to the whole nation.

It is said to be that this program will eradicate the unemployment and poverty in the Philippines. Even though that this is a big adjustment, specifically to the students and as well as to the parents; we still believe that this program will help us students to achieve our dreams in life. The spark of hope gets brighter and brighter for the students, with the help of the teachers who are well-equipped with knowledge and skills, the Department of Education who ensures the quality of the program, to the Local Government Units that offers a helping hand with all of these, I have no single doubt that this is going to be a success. The death of the four-year legacy is the birth of the new heritage. n

the officials of the municipality conducted a program entitled “AGAPEstudyante” a drug abuse prevention program of FCLNHS to educate the students with the negative effects of drugs in one’s life specially to the lives of every students who are exposed to these vices. This has been a long time problem not only in schools but also in

society. The program “AGAPEstudyante” is a big step to fully eradicate drugs in FCLNHS. The school allotted day and time to give way to the said program. Every Thursday Mr. Michael Santos together with the Pastors and Col. Julius Domingo conducts activities and gives lectures to the students of Lipana. The lessons focused on how to avoid using drugs. This is the way of FCLNHS to help the students and the community as well. The school never fails to protect its studentry from any form of abuse and this little step is highly commendable. It might be small but if we walk to the path without leaves and stones it could lead us to something big. n

REDEEM OF THE SENTINEL THE OBSTACLE which is full of terrible events that takes something full of brightness – childhood – and buries it in a void. Bullying is a disaster in our school that has caused many students’ deep suffering. There are too many instances of students being harassed that they become mentally or physically ill or worse. This time bullying was regarded as what it is: a not proper behavior. Last month, Felizardo C., Lipana National High School (FCLNHS) in Bulacan has been leading the way in addressing the problem. Mr. Michael Santos, Mss. Marilen Paguio together

Loida D. Hilario

Head Teacher IV (Math) (Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 4: 12-19)

with the AP Department through the effort of Mrs. Melisa P. Adzuara lead the students to speak up and stand against bullying. “We want Felizardo C. Lipana National High School to be a Bully Free School” uttered Santos. This yearly campaign of FCLNHS were composed of different activities such as film viewing, poster and slogan making. Bullying has become a big problem in schools and commu-

nity that Department of Education (DepEd) issued a policy last May. Department Order No.40, also known as the DepEd “zero tolerance policy for any act of child abuse, exploitation, violence, discrimination, bullying”, and guidelines for dealing with such abuse in any way of bullying including cyber bullying. The house of Representatives has also passed house Bill No.5496, or the anti-Bullying act

of 2012, but it has yet to be passed by the senate. Both the government and private sectors are now working hand-on –hand to put bullying into an end. Small effort such as of FCLNHS must be appraised by each one of us, young and adult people alike. We must understand now bullying rampages many life, it is the scourge that takes many bright soul into the dark. n

Fatal Fiery Dear Editor, Our school serves as our second home and we spend almost half of our life here studying and building our dreams. It is our responsibility to take good care of our assigned classrooms as well as our surroundings. I am very saddened with the current situation in our school. Despite the available trash bins in every corner of the campus, garbage are still everywhere. It seems that our fellow schoolmates don’t pay much attention to cleanliness. I really hope that our school could come up with a very good plan to bring back the beauty and cleanliness of our dear school. Respectfully yours, Wendrick Brofar, IV- Rizal w w w Dear Wendrick, Thank you for writing us your concern. We pleased that you are very much aware when it comes to cleanliness. SSG now, together with the school authorities are implementing rules and regulations about proper garbage disposal. Advisers and school staffs are disseminating information about waste management. Yours truly, The Editor

tip-off LAST JUNE, when most public and private schools began the school year, the New Vois Association of the Philippines (NVAP) challenged Local Government Unit (LGUs) to enforce Section 10 of Republic Act (RA) 9211, the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 meters from the

perimeter of a school. RA 9211 also bans the advertising of smoking in outdoor displays, such as billboards, murals, and transport stations within 100 meters from a school’s perimeter. Lackadaisical LGUs should be jolted to action by student groups, school authorities, and parents, teachers and com-

munity associations. Despite these ordinances being enforced nationally and locally there are retail stores outside the schools who secretly selling cigarettes to the students. They even provide space for the students so that they can smoke freely. The health hazards of smoking is undisclosed to the public long time ago. Still many minors are addicted to this kind of vice. The hard work of school authorities, SSG, faculty and local government unit should be applauded. May the owners of retail stores will think not only for their profits but also the welfare of the students. n

BLESSED are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Now, who is there to harm you if you are jealous for what is right? But even if you do suffer for righteousness sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them nor be troubled. But in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord, always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence; and keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behaviour in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God’s will, than for doing wrong. n

Behind the Words of Wisdom SOLDIERS of Christ not soldiers of money, Angel Manalo brother of Iglesia ni Cristo expressed his disappointment together with his mother Tenny about the rampant corruption in the religious organization INC. Angel claimed that some of the religious group’s ministers are missing and they have released video calling for help. “Napakaraming anomalya, napakaraming tiwali na ngayon sa Iglesia.’Yun po ang ayaw namin” this is the testimony that Manalo said to his interview with DZMM. But the

bustling corner INC denied the statement of Angel and accused them of trying to get the sympathy and get back to power. Meanwhile, Edwin Zabala the

spokesperson of INC denied Manalo’s allegations and said “kahit hindi siya kapatid sa laman, masasaktan ang isang kaanib kung may paratang na ganyan.Wala po kaming ginaga-

wang masama”. But Angel will continue to call on the members to stand against the current leadership and he added that he is receiving threats because of what he revealed about the Ministry of INC. After all, whether Angel’s statement is true or not this issue will surely create chaos in the line of the INC followers. This issue will surely test the faith of the INC devotees. The credence of INC will somehow be affected with this controversy, because this issue should not happen in any religious organization. n

School is the place to learn something and also to have friends and best friends, where our teachers teach us how to respect our families and those people around us, where our teachers thought us how to love our friends and specially our enemies and the place where those caterpillars are trying to change into a beautiful and autonomous butterfly, but it is also the particular place where bullying and criticism usually

wise crack happened. Some of students don’t like to go to school not because they don’t like their teachers, school uniforms or because they are lazy or just they don’t like it but because their self-confidence and feelings are being broken by those students thinking that they are perfect and they are not, that’s what you call bullying, the repeated bad activities and an intension to hurt an individual. Bully-

ing can be classified into four types: physical or hitting someone, punching, kicking and etc. next is verbal or saying something bad or offensive against to an individual, Relational or destroying friendships and peer acceptance and lastly the Cyber-bullying, harming or judging others by means of social networking sites and gadgets. We usually hate those bullies, the one who punch or pinch us, the one

who said that you’re not important in this world or maybe world would be greater when you’re not here, the one who told you that you’re too dark, your nose, eyes, forehead, lips and mouth is really big, the one who told you that you’re too fat or thin, you’re ugly and small, the one who made you realized all your faults, flaws and imperfections but be thankful because you know what? without them maybe you will not realize how strong you are and maybe you will not work hard to reach your dreams. Try to show them that they are wrong and make them realized that no one can dull the shine of your little star. They are tough, fearless and bold but if you try to open your mind and heart you’ll see the real person inside of them. A person who needs attention, love and care to those people

around them, who lives in anger and loneliness, a person who is really unfortunate than us, who are being bullied by them because even we are being condemned by them in the end of the day we have our family and friends who love us very much compared to them that the only thing they know is they are strong even though they are not. It’s ok if they are blind to see your real beauty, if they are deaf to your complains about their bad activities, if they are mute to tell your good characteristics and also if they are numb to feel that you’re wrecked and tormented by their words and actions. But please don’t be mad at them they are also like us who needs sympathy and understand, vengeance will not help them but our prayers will. n

PRESIDENT Aquino disdainfully mentioned the problems that were passed to him by the former administration and proudly told of his administration’s accomplishments during his last state-of-thenation-address. He still has 11 months to go but it is the last time that he will address the joint of the cabinet and all the Filipinos around the world, he recognized the Philippines as the “Asia’s rising tiger, Asia’s rising star” for the fastest growth of the Philippine economy with lower unemployment rate with 6.8 percent hence, Filipino people

together with Senator Grace Poe were disappointed because Pnoy did not mention his stand about the Freedom of Information Bill. There had been some crocodiles that were killed by Aquino just like Janet Napoles but many of them were still in the ponds swims freely and eat funds. The quest for eradicating corruption in our country is a long and winding process. Let us be more vigilant and smart in choosing whoever will be next sharp header in our country. The answer depends on us whomever we choose to lead us to the right path. n

In the Name of Thy Father THE THIRD largest religious denomination in the Philippines, Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) faces controversies on the alleged mass kidnapping of their ministers including the members of the founding Manalo family who are involved on the corruption scandal. It really gives a big shock to us by knowing that there is a corruption happening in their religion. Some of us are shocked and disappointed by knowing this kind of issue in INC. Some of us are already loosing some respect and trust to their religion because of this issue. The allegations started on Wednesday as Felix Nathaniel ‘Angel’ Manalo, the brother of Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo and their mother, Cristina ‘Tenny’ Manalo, the widow of the former Executive Minister Estaño Manalo who uploaded a Video to youtube revealing that the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) administration had threatened their lives. This video which was uploaded gets viral online on Thursday and triggered

stand point the media to tackle the so called ‘silent issues’ of INC. INC expelled Angel and Tenny Manalo on Thursday for what they have been observed as sowing disunity in the church and power grabbing, as announced by its General Evangelist Bienvenido Santiago. According to Santiago, there is no truth to the claims of Tenny and Angel.”The doctrinaire of the INC had been broken,” Angel Manalo said on Friday. Well how it was getting broken? Why don’t they fix it, before letting the world know about this issue? Even Chris Brown was involved in this issue of the INC

and wasn’t able to go to his country until the issue isn’t settled at all. All of the people have this kind of religion had shamed and tempered by this issue for so long. Corruptions may be up surging in our country and world but still, we should know where all the issues started.INC is one of the respected religions in our country. But people see and describe INC very contrary than before. We have more religions in the world; all of them have secret issues. We must still respect their religions as they respect our own. n

view point “I FOUGHT the good fight,” President Benigno’Pnoy’Aquino III said in his 6th and final State-of-the-NationAddress (SONA), Pnoy admitted that not all his promises in his SONA materialize. The SONA contains a lot of promises, triumphs of his governance and his plans for our country to move forward. President Aquino delivered his sixth and last SONA, July 27, 2015. At Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City, 146 rounds of applause with the loud-

est on his thanksgiving and valedictory speech was given by the lawmakers and guests. SONA 2015 has been the longest speech of Aquino on his five years in service. It started at exactly 4:00 in the afternoon and completed after two hours and 15 minutes. Before starting the SONA, Communications Sec. Herminio Coloma Jr. told Pnoy that he will emulate his mother Cory Aquino looking back at history during her final SONA in July 22, 1991. As a result, Pnoy made some rants to

the previous administrations. After the SONA, Aquino gets failing grade from militants, teachers, and right groups in his SONA. Human rights violations had been revealed, 262 extrajudicial killings, 293 frustrated extrajudicial killings, 27 enforced disappearance, 125 cases of torture, 771 illegal arrest detention cases, and 537 political prisoners. According to the Social of Filipino Families who are claiming to be food-poor at 37% or an estimated of 8.1 million families from 36% or about 7.9 million households 3 months ago. Being a leader of a country is not that easy. Six years of service is not enough to eradicate poverty. This social issue has been a long time problem which all the previous government tried to combat. Aquino has done his part and only history could tell how he was as a president. n

THE PHILIPPINES’ quest for peacefully resolving territorial disputes in the South China Sea has entered into a critical stage which was followed by a series of argumentation that gives a big concern not only to the Philippines but also to the world. Philippines have been peacefully living for years and its sovereignty is in great danger right now. According to some old maps and documents the claim of China is illegal. The claims includes the islands of Spratlys and Shoal which proven to have a great oil reservoir. The ultimate aim is to ensure all claimant countries honor their treaty commitments under prevailing international legal regimes, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which has been ratified by the Philippines (1984) and China (2006) alike. UNCLOS has the mandate to rule on the Philippines’ case against China. The Philippines won’t be able to even defend the merit of its case, unless it convinces the court that compulsory arbitration is the way forward. Until a man who doesn’t gave his name showed the old map of Philippines

which he got from an auction. The content of it was about the islands which were claiming by Chinese are really ours. But China did not recognize the map; they said that our claim has no basis. Nowadays, the Chinese government is constructing buildings and putting up military camps on the islands even though there is no recommendations and legal decisions made by UNCLOS. The China has given us an ultimatum which threats not only our country but also the whole world. The actions of China in sending their warships near the islands had brought enormous fear and questions amongst the Filipinos. Even though that our alliance countries like America and Japan donated warships and other battle equipment the question is “are we ready for another war, wherein the innocent and young ones serves as collateral damage? I myself never experienced a war but the pages of history explicate and express how horrible and gory a military combat is. I pray and I hope that the government of China and Philippines settle the conflict in a peaceful and just agreement. n

Walking on uneven roads-enduring the heat from the sun’s rage and the shivering touch of splatters from the cold raindrops-was never really easy. We are now in the second millennium where lots of vehicles of different kinds are available and seeing these is really an eye-opener. Another thing we had been to nowadays is the availability of electricity where in we could get and gather information and feel the luxury of life with just a single action-plug in some appliances. In the modern times, where technology is just a single click away, it is still surprising to actually encounter people who can not afford to have electricity in their houses and feel the artificial light from an electric

The Dangerous Book of Heroes kicks off with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who was shortlisted for the role of James Bond, expelled from the SAS for attempting to blow up a film set, who used a Black and Decker saw to cut off his frostbitten fingers. It doesn’t let up from there, freewheeling across the centuries with chest thrust out and sword firmly in hand. There are, admittedly, a few women included: Florence Nightingale; Aphra Behn, the Restoration playwright and spy; the female agents of the SOE. There is an array of intellectuals and activists: Thomas Paine, or Wilberforce and the anti-slavery campaigners. Yet the huge volume of the 43 profiles is of men of “courage, determination and some dash”: generals, buccaneers and adventurers: Marlborough, Drake and Cook. Yet corking good fun as all this is, there is a wider plan: as the Igguldens say in their epigraph, “People who lose their history, lose their soul.” Their task is to bring back an understanding of British history and its prominence.

But while they shed light on forgotten corners and characters – revealing, for example, that Fiji used to be known as “The Cannibal Isles”, or that Churchill tried to put Northern Ireland in a plate, in exchange for de Valera’s aid – there is something expository about it too. This is the “great man” theory of history taken to an elaborate extent: a shallow, misleading narrative shorn of causation and nuance. The Igguldens’ effort to portray British history as a glorious continuum, in which the gold stashed by Drake helps set up what becomes the British East India Company, whose territories provide a proving ground for Wellesley, who returns as the Duke of Wellington to liberate Britain. But in the process they harvested caricatures: Britain as a perennial bastion of freedom, Louis XIV as a tyrant as wicked as what the history could ever imagine, Oliver Cromwell as the man who lift up the blinders and “brought democracy to England”. The perceptible purpose of this book is to embolden modern heroes in Britain, to provide a triumph of martial spirit. It should have a convincing

and instructive effect on the children who read it. But for imperial history with real zip and swagger – not to mention a true sense of time and place – the gold standard remains the man who lived as full a life as any of the Igguldens’ heroes: Brigadier-General Sir Harry Paget Flashman.

tuwing gabi lalo na kapag puro ra ang napupunta sa mga mata -Kenneth L. Gravamen

The compelling story of Heneral Luna opened the eyes of every Filipino. It is very figurative and timely to present day supported by incredible script, heartfelt score and inspiring cinematography. At first you would think that this is just like any other heroes’ story about how one fought, survived or defeated. How bravery and compassion unite the people to fight the reprehensible invaders. Yes, it is partly correct but Heneral Luna (John Arcilla) revealed that there is no unity amongst the countrymen; instead they are slaves of personal interest and politicking. The story was directed by Jerrold Tarug and script co-written by him, Henry Hunt Francia, and E.A. Rocha;

the Heneral Luna takes a different attack in telling the story of how we lost the battle and got occupied by the Americans. The movie intentionally puts the colonialists in the fringe, making them merely scenery whose presence moved the pot. The real focus in the story is the inner turmoil, the tension amongst the officials of the so-called foundling fathers. It is a story of how a rebellious voice can get swept away and ultimately perishes under a wave of pride and individual interest. John Arcilla showed above stellar performance in the title role of General Antonio Luna. Arcilla plays with the whole range of emotions in his portrayal of the larger-than-life general. He was able to showcase

the ferocious, unruly and explosive man the general has been historically known to be and yet he was able to show the soft side of the character. A man who rides head first in the battle to boosts the morale of his troop, but at the same time the same man who can share warm moments with his mother. Excellent is the only way to describe the movie’s sound design – from Luna’s table banging overpowering the rasping in a cabinet meeting, to a guitar mini-concert midway the film, to the overall masterful score. However the most prominent along with the movie’s creativity is its script. Poetic yet conversational, Heneral Luna‘s script is filled to the edge with fancy lines of dialogue. It’s not usual that you get to hear lines as brilliantly crafted as “kailangan mong tumalon sa kawalan,” “digmaan ang iyong asawa, ako lamang ay iyong querida,” and “para kayong mga birhen na naniniwala sa pag-ibig ng puta.” Here is a script so elegant that it can even make curse words sound so refined, so tasteful. Overall, Heneral Luna is not just a film but a wake up call that some things never change. We are still victims of the chaotic scene of politics and as long as we are driven by our own interests and prejudices we are still prisoners of hopelessness and desolation. The movie has done its purpose inleaving us the question “Bayan o sarili?”

This bitter yesterday I can’t forget. I was horrified as I saw an old man swinging like a paper on a thin branch of tree. My ears were irritated as I heard the cries of the children begging for help. I also smelled the unconditioned foul smell of lifeless bodies scattered in the road. I felt the icy cold raging flood entering our house. I shouted very loud as the steel roof wounded my skin. “Arggghhhh, it hurts!” That tragedy is still running in my mid. My life’s bitter yesterday. The nightmare I never dreamed to happen. I can still picture those sudden things because of the scar left on my face, not just on my face but also in my mind. According to the NDRRMC (National Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Council), because of the Typhoon Yolanda, 6,314 people and their livelihood was lost, their houses were destroyed and thousand of casualties were damaged. Up to now, the scar was still on my face. The scar of yesterday, my skin that will never be back again,

also with the lives of people will never be back. 250,000 families lost their shelters however good seeds lend their helping arms – GMA Kapuso Foundation. They gave relief goods in the midst of the deadly typhoon and built a GMA Kapuso Village for the victims. GMA’s Kapuso Star, Julie Ann San Jose also gave them light for her song “Pagbangon” gave them inspiration and hope to stand up. Of course, with also the help of God, that is why I am still here. He never left me. He used people to extend His love, mercy and compassion. I never blamed Him, why this happened. I know He has better plans. According to His word found in the bible, Jeremiah 29:1, “For I know all the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans that give you hope and a future.” I know that in every shadow, there is light. I reminisce my yesterday. As I saw the scar lying on my skin, a smile began to form across my weary face, knowing that this scar is a sign of my strength, faith and perseverance as I survived through my bitter yesterday.

The Rainbow after the Rain By Krista Marie Cervantes

I was born with the world behind my back. On the day I came out to live, the light had touched my skin and the wind had cradled me to sleep. However, as I grew, the light had left me in the darkness and the wind that is used to caress my skin was replaced with smoke that strangles me to death. Walls blocked. Chains locked. Cages tightly closed. These prevented me to walk through my life’s journey. A world filled with ignorance. Other children’s laughter is heard everywhere. Their sparkling eyes are made up of life’s vibrant colors. Unlike me, I was buried under my parent’s depths. My eyes were opened to see the unfolded secret of this world. The

Whenever the dawn comes, I always wait for the shimmering unreachable stars, wishing that someday I can get out in this cage. I always ask them to unlock the chains resting in my arms. I want them to be my light beyond my dark and miserable life. I am a slave of life’s debt. These depths made my life a living hell. My life is in the bondage of wrath of fire with demons who took me away. I can hear other people’s scream crying for help. I can see their lifeless body bathing in their own blood. I beg the children who use to play not with toys, but rather with the game of life’s foolish ways. I am a victim. I am sad to say that there are many of us. We are all victims of human trafficking. We are humans treated as animals. Human trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of forced labor, sexual slavery or the extraction of organs and tissues. It is a crime against us because of the violation of our rights of movement through coercion and because of their commercial exploitation. We are also victims of poverty. Poverty pushed us into prostitution.

ippines’ sovereign, while China is 500 nautical miles (NM) away from these said islands. Because of these current issues, the Chinese government stopped their countrymen to enter our beloved Pearl of the Orient Sea. They also banned our world-class Philippine products entering their land, affecting our export industry for China is one of our biggest markets. It also affects in terms of tourism, especially in Boracay because Chinese folks used to visit there every month. This standout is really David and Goliath. We are the victims affected in this raging war for we are in battle with the dragon that keeps controlling our future economy. Maybe, in the previous years, it is called South China Sea, but this is the time to wake up and tell the world what is ours. China uses their power to manipulate us, but this is not a barrier for we are both beneficiaries of our native products and amazing skills. We are little faces drawn upon China’s enormous hands. Yes, we are David who used to fight Goliath for the sake of the islands and seas. We are following the right lead in a legal diplomatic way so we are confident to move towards excellence. Yes, we are David, the son of God. Like David, we are with the power of the Holy Spirit. And because we are walking in the right path, as time continues to pass by, soon, Philippines will rise from their hands. “Walang maliit na hindi nakakapuwing.” “It is true, Grandma.” I said with a smile across my face.

He taught me many things. He is my rook, hope light and salvation. He taught me to love. He taught me to be strong enough to break the walls that block the shimmering light of my success. He taught me how to be brave enough to unlock the chains that prevent me in being incapable to soar high. And mostly, he taught me how to dream that someday I can get out of this cage. Someday, I’ll see the beautiful rainbow after the rain. I felt a teardrop in my cheek as I ended my graduation speech not just full of words instead full of dreams and colors. A speech that gives hope, a speech that tells how a “batang hamog” like me saw the rainbow he always wanted to see. The things I learned from my childhood.

Unreachable Star

DAVID and GOLIATH “Walang maliit na hindi nakakapuwing” This is what my grandmother told me. She used to tell me stories, and for this day she shared the story of David and Goliath. Goliath is a huge, powerful and courageous yet a warrior full of pride and selfishness. He scares people to take their territory but not David’s. Definitely, not David’s. Goliath is about to invade his land. Though David is just a small young shepherd, he did his best to fight Goliath and he claimed the victory with the power of our most high God. As my grandmother finished her story, I turned on the television. A commercial flashed on the TV screen. It showed the next episode that is about to be aired on Sunday’s Best in ABS-CBN: Spratly, mga Isla ng Kalayaan” by Ciarra Zambrano, one of ABS-CBN’s newscaster. After the Philippines started to file a petition for the rights about our territory, it seems like a war is raging between us and the next superpower of the world, China. However, we are still hoping that the arguments between these two countries about the name change of South China Sea to West Philippine Sea, about China’s proclaim of the Scarborough Shoal which we call Panatag Shoal and of course the longtime issue about the ownership of the Spratly Island or OUR Kalayaan Group of Islands will be solved. According to the International Treaty on Law of the Seas (ILOS), the islands they used to claim like the Panatag Shoal and most of the Kalayaan Group of Islands belongs to the Phil-

reality is hidden in every color, pain behind my smile, and the suffering hiding in a child like me. My childhood is different from theirs. They are used to play with their classmates in school while I play with cars and trucks in EDSA just to sell rags that my mother made. They are used to run in playgrounds while I am running in EDSA just to go far from the MMDA officer who is chasing after me. Their family goes with them in every step they rake while I learned to walk alone. Walls of poverty blocked the light see. Chainsaw incapability locked my future. The cage of life’s misery opened its door and trapped me in. I learned to dwell in the darkness. I leaned to stop. I learned not to dream until I met Him.

Bearing the emitted burning rays, Adjusting to the cold splashing rain for days. His feet hurry-walked past uneven roads, But he didn’t mind, just to reach his second home. In between those hard-bound covers, He spends his days exploring different worlds. With his parents, he may not find a good companion, But with his peers, he’ll always be that reliable one. His dreams just any others-lift himself from penury, He is now working in his way to reach it and, maybe, gradually, His determination and perseverance to learn, Someday will give him something to earn.

Many of us are promised for a better future but where are we now? We are birds reaching the star but now trapped in the cage of sex exploitation. At this young age, our eyes were opened about the work of blood and flesh. We minors are used in physical and sexual coercion; deception, abuse of power, gender discrimination and bondage incurred through forced debt. We are forced into prostitution. Prostitution took our dignity and innocence away. This is a form of work that is likely hazardous to our physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development. According to the International Labor Organization, the global number of children involved in this work has fallen down during the past decade – it has declined by one third, from 246 million in 2000 to 168 million children in 2012. And I am one of them. I pursued my dreams. I strived really hard. I worked every night and go to school every morning. Human trafficking never made me stop my dreams instead it inspired me to fly towards the stars. I heard claps and cheers as I ended my graduation speech. I graduated as cum laude. My tears fell down as I received my diploma, knowing that I am one of the birds who finally reached the unreachable star.

I can see, hear, and smell, feel and I am dying. My senses are killing me. I can see many colors. Yes, various colors of plastics and wrappers covering the oil-spilled bodies of water. I can hear loud sounds. Definitely, the annoying horns of vehicles in the midst of the road. I can smell different aromas as the smoke continuously strangles me to death. I can feel the extreme heat which melts my heart every second. My senses are killing me. The clock ticks so fast as my life gets shorter. I can’t stand this anymore. My senses are killing me. As time went by, the end has to come. My sight breaks my heart. My tears fell down as my lonely eyes saw this ruined world. Every day, garbage covers my riches. The flowers and the trees, the sea and the shore, where are they? They are wrapped with plastics all over. Their beauty is hiding inside a bag. The bag of darkness hides the light they bring into this wonderful world. My ears just wished not to hear rather to be broken by those loud sounds. This sounds overpowered the real sounds of life. Now, I can’t be able to hear the song of the humming birds and the groove of the dancing branches of the trees. The wrecking sounds of the vehicular noise killed the music of

love heard in the air. The arguments of different horns are what I heard. As I my journey continues, the smoke in me is getting even broader. The wind that is used to caress my skin was replaced with smoke which ends my life. Where is the sweet aroma of daisies? Where are the birds and the bees? It is not the daisies I can smell, it is the foul odor of the garbage goes in my nostrils. It is not the birds and bees are flying in the air; it is the flies and mosquitoes that filled my garden that is now turned into mountain, mountain of trash. I can feel the drops of sweat in my head because of extreme heat. I rather not to feel rather than to live in this living hell, rather to live in fire of global warming! Aren’t you aware?! Hey, wake up! We are dying. We are ending. My senses are killing me. Global warming is killing me, not just me but us. Global warming is the term use to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently changing the Earth’s climate. This climate change is due to what our senses realized, the garbage, and water, noise and air pollution, then what’s next the death of people on this world? Why this had been worse?

Through It All The light had left my sight and leaves me with darkness. The wind that is used to caress my skin was replaced with smoke which strangles me to death. A world filled with ignorance. Other children’s laughter are heard everywhere. Their life is made up of life’s vibrant colors. Unlike me, I was buried under my tears which hold my anxieties. With tears in my eyes, I’m walking alone in this miserable path. I’m watching the stars up above as the cold winter breeze passed through my weary face. It is Christmas once again. All people

My senses are killing me. You are killing me. You foolish people are serial killers who abused me. You disposed your garbage improperly. I can see them on streets especially in clogged drainage systems. I can see them in oceans too. The oceans are now covered not just with your garbage but with oil from your big boats which also produces harmful smokes. Are you aware about the greenhouse effect? Are you ready to live in the seizing heat or bitterly cold world? My senses are killing me. Will you let this happen? “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination of full hope.” Jump the hurdles of pollution. Use your sight to correct your mistakes. Jump over your mistakes. Leap the fences of deforestation. Use your ears to hear the shout of the tiny insects and birds. Use your smell to smell the grasp of the plants. Together, we will penetrate the wall of global warming to be on our destination of better living. Do this for the sake of love, your love for me, your Mother Earth. I can see, hear, and smell, feel and for you I am still fighting.

One hundred steps left . . . I heard voices telling me, I am very near still I can’t see any signs. Go, just walk. I continue to walk through my journey with my second-hand defected slippers. I will never stop walking until I see changes, inch by inch and step by step. Three, two and one! Once, the voices whispered that I am already here but I know that I am not. So I preferred to move, go on. In every step I take, compassion fills the edges of my heart, compassion for our sisters and brothers, also for me. It seems like we are in the cage of poverty, we are in the soak of incapability’s mud that keeps us incapable to learn, live and survive. First, I saw a young beggar sleeping in front of a sari-sari store. The vendor pushed her away, treating her like a dog. A mother catches my attention. She wears dark and dirty clothes that made her look like a living rag with a hungry crying baby on her lap. Those teenagers flashed as a thunder as they hurriedly ran to escape with the expensive bag they stole. My eyes opened wide as I saw a group of children ages ten and above breathing with a plastic of rugby in their innocent faces. In these regards, my life situation really touches my heart. It is difficult for me to see my six siblings eat rice with just salt and water. It really hurts whenever I see my mother who used to do mountains of laundries day and night for a little sum of money which is insufficient for our daily living. My heart was broken as my mind thinks about my father who was seduced by a low-class prostitute. I am illiterate. But not just me, there are many of us. In an estimated value, 885 million of children are in the right age but they can’t read and 130 million of them are not able to go to school.

How can these children be the future of our country if most of them can’t be able to read even our country’s name? Would poverty be the walls to stop them achieve their dreams? I don’t think so. Definitely, NO! I can see the government making their own move. I am a beneficiary of Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program or 4P’s definitely helps these children. More than 4.4 million families are now beneficiaries of this said program. This year, 333,673 pupils finished their secondary school. I am one of them. I embraced the fact that I can’t pursue my dreams for my mother can’t send me to a university for college. I hoped and once you chose hope, anything is possible. Big thanks to K-12. I never gave up. Instead to stop, I continued schooling using the K-12 Program. I chose metal fabrication as my specialization. Part of the K-12 Program is the career immersion. I was hired in CLP Metal, a metal fabrication company. My job was to design machines. The machines I used to design were sold abroad. I am very proud to say that I am K-12 graduate or what they call 20th century learner. In fact, not all 19-year old teenagers can design machines. I am proud that a child like me could be the country’s pride and future. Perseverance. Hope. Faith. Trust. Hard work. Courage. Love. Joy. I heard voices telling me, I am now here and I can see the rainbow. Go, never stop walking, and never stop learning. I continue to walk through my journey with my precious glass slippers. I will forever walk as I see new colors and changes. Not just in me, but also in you. Footprints, the sign of our strength amidst the long road towards the future. One hundred steps more. We children will walk together to see our future, to witness the change.

It could just be a single tree Perfectly rooted underneath Or maybe those sparkling little Thirsty earth It may have been my mom With all the thoughts of her, I’ll write Or it can be about a trail of ants Ideas would swirl- following their taken Path

By Trizhalyn Maglangit are busy. All children are happy, except me. They are wrapped in their parents’ arms, but not me. All children are wearing beautiful dresses that I don’t have. I ‘am wearing second-hand clothing looking like a living rag. All children are excited to open their gifts during midnight while I sleep in the midst of the road. And of course, all of them are filled with joy as they felt their family’s endless love, which I never experienced. From the age of five, my eyes were opened about the real world behind my back. I was a victim of life’s dark shadow. My father was seduced by a demon and took him away and left me and my mother alone. My mother really worked hard day and night to

support me yet the money is still insufficient. I loved her so much as much she loved me too, but she is not able to fulfill her promise to be with me. One day, as I open my eyes I noticed that everything is gone. I burst out in tears leaving me alone and helpless. Family is the essence of their life, which I never had. Why should I live? I don’t have anything. Family is the building blocks of values, which is never built upon me. How can I stand? I’m very weak. Family is where true love starts, which never started on me. What should fill my heart? I’m empty. Family is what I want. Family is what I need, that I don’t have. When will my heart be filled with thing called love? When will

my dreams come true? When will I become one of the happy children walking joyfully down the street? I know that this happens for a purpose. I never blamed God, why all of this happened to a helpless child like me. He fulfilled what I need. He is everything to me. He became my family. He is my light, my guide and foundation in every step I take. He filled the darkness with shining light. He replaced the smoke into a sweet aroma of success. He changed me from rags to riches. And joy is overflowing in my heart as I reminisce, my life before I was helped by a missionary. That through it all, God had been my beloved family.

10 types of Passenger By Jonalyn Managaysay & Jaymark Cundangan

OJT – they usually sits at the back of the driver. They are the most responsible commuters. They always reach for changes and fares. Their famous line is “Bayad daw po”. They are called “On-The-Job Trainees” because they are like the protégé of the driver. Nappers – the ones who treats the jeep as their house, condo or even their apartment. They almost have pilow or blanket with them just to sleep. Sometimes their head falls exactly on your shoulder or sometimes they get awake when the driver suddenly steps on the brake. Observer – type of commuter you will hate the most because they look at you with criticism. They usually look at you from head to toe and look away. You will get annoyed in their judging eye like saying that they are superior than you. Call Center Agent – type of passengers that you will encounter the most. You are beside them blabbing about something then the only thing that you can do is be curious

on what he/she talking about with someone on the other side of the phone. She/He laughed non-stop and blabs about something that can make you pissed. I mean when he/she talked like nonsense. Upong Bente – commuters that will make you pissed-off. They cover all vacant seats like they are the king or most likely the owner of it. Their seat can be seated by two or more persons as if they have rented the jeepney. Gossiper– they have megaphone, microphone or lapel in their vocal chords. They are the boisterous passengers. They are friendly and sometimes comes in group. They always talk about the recent issues in the society. In short, they are the story tellers. Balik-Bayan–they that carry ton of baggage, suitcase and trunk. They have so much on their both hands and you’ve got no other choice but to help them. The Half Seater – he occupies a little space inside the jeepney. They only get half seat

of what they pay. They are the most reliable in compressing themselves. They can be flattened like waffle or bread. They don’t even complain about their space. When the driver abruptly step on the brake they will surely fall on their seats. Hokage –“Hokage Moves” 1…2...3…4 *cling on the shoulder* Ninja Moves! Look around… searching for big breast. Look down…searching for a whine, smooth legs. Look and search for a relaxing scenery. Intensionally bump their elbow on a chest of a big cup girl or women. Chandelier - 1…2…3…1…2…3. The Chandeleir are great because they can make the 4…5…6 but before 7 comes they already gone on their seat. There are 3 reasons why chandelier happens. First, they forgot to give their fare. Second, their fare is not enough so they will just intentionally do the Chandeleir and lastly, from the very beginning…they don’t have any intentions to pay.

Omen

Se a

By Jay Mark Cundangan When time comes, it will change everything when those buildings and houses turn into clod, when smiles and happiness become fuss and doleful, the sound of cars and music change into screams, howls and regrets, people that are assiduously working are now lying on the ground, whispering for help then suddenly close their eyes, sleep and never awaken. What would life be when everything changed into nothing? A dreadful forecast might happen, it can happen maybe next month, next week, on the other day or maybe today so our alertness and knowledge are important to surpass this forecast. This forecast is called “The Big One” or an earthquake caused by the West Valley Fault’s movement. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake may happen and may affect some provinces of Luzon and Metro Manila. Magnitude 7.2 earthquake is equivalent to 1.80 billion of dynamites enough to ruin buildings and

infrastructures. This forecast was supported by PHIVOLCS, based on their prediction that 31,000 to 33,500 people may die and 113,000 may be injured. On July 30, 2015 a nationwide earthquake drill was held to educate children so everyone can handle and surpass this phenomenon. They also give activity sheets for some parents on how they can also surpass this calamity. The information and knowledge that were established in their mind are weapons that they can use to surpass this calamity. Earthquake… a killer…a destroyer, a wrecker and a problem that we can only surpass by using our faith, knowledge and awareness. Our love is our strength that we can use to save ourselves and other’s life too. Break this omen, lessen the people who might die or get injured and survive in this catastrophe with our intact family and our loved ones.

It’s already 7:00 o’clock in the morning but it is still gloomy outside, I open the door and notice the sea of clouds, clouds that cover the environment. After several days the sea of clouds are still covering the city, Government Agencies released some Press Conference and warnings for those people who are affected because of it. People are using face masks and wondering, Is it clouds came from? It’s not fog, it’s not cloud……….. specialists called it Haze, a particularly a particularly acute problem and it is usually happens in South East part of Asia. Haze can be formed when dust and smoke particles accumulates in dry air, to denote visibility reducing aerosols of the wet type, the term haze used in meteorological literature. One of its causes are forest fires, forest fires that contributes a lot of smoke and dust while the other one is dense of industrial pollution that

can be called as Smog. Smog and haze can cause zero visibility or low visibility because of mist that covers the environment and respiratory health threat because of its dust and pall of noxious fumes but its worst effect is disputes of neighboring country like little arguments between Malaysia and Indonesia. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was shrouded of noxious fumes, smell of ashes and coal. The main source of these silent destroyer are Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, Kalimantan and Riau where the forests and plantations are burned because of those farmers and owners that clearing their lands during dry weather. According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) the haze was brought in the Philippines by Typhoon Lando. Cebu was one of the places that were affected by

the haze in Indonesia, flights are canceled and people are worried. People used face masks and flights are canceled because of low visibility. It takes couple of weeks to clear those haze in our country. Last October 28, the level of haze in our country falls in 30 micrograms per normal cubic meter. 2 heads in General Santos City died but Secretary Janette Garin of DOH cleared that their death has no connection in haze. It’s not fog, it’s not cloud, it’s a fruit….fruit of non-contentment and selfishness, fruit of our eagerness to become wealthy and to rise above the clouds of our ambitions. But don’t worry it will happen; our recklessness will bring us to a city of clouds, clouds that will kill us silently and slowly and will take our freedom to see the beauty of sunrise and sunset, the stars and moon and all the splendors of what nature offer.

The bird songs that can be heard before are now cries of chainsaw, the clouds that covered the mountains are now smoked that is irritating and suffocating people around it. Tall trees that filter and humidify the air are now charcoals that chip in pollutions in our surrounding. What happened to those birds, clouds, trees and a green forest? Why does it become dark, polluted and compassionated work of god? Large brown spots of burnt forest stain were discovered in the Ipo, watershed in Norzagaray, Bulacan. 6,600 hectares of forest provides fresh water to more than 11 million people in Metro Manila and it was

provided by Ipo watershed in order to absorb rain water that will channel into streams which are source of our fresh wasters. Evapotranspiration is a process of humidifying the air and because of it a typical tree can breathes out 250 to 400 gallons of water everyday. Cernan (a screen name used to protect his family) stated what he observed year by year during the dry season, “Last summer, the river got smaller and smaller, next year if the deforestation continues it might for good.”, and that is one of the effects of deforestation. Informal settlers and some Bulakenyos who lived around the Ipo

watershed are those people who are responsible on what they are doing; because of deforestation the soils from the mountain fell on the water that causes the water to become dirty. This may lead to higher water fees for consumers because producers or concessionaires will invest in a more powerful filtration technology. We are here because of God, and God made us to protect his creatures and masterpiece but what we are devastating, ruining and wrecking our nature. It’s the right time to become responsible and thankful on what we have and we need to protect our mother nature.

In 2008, when I served on the preliminary board of judges for The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards, Cumagun impressed me with his work in agriculture. In fact, he was one of the first in the country to study Trichoderma strains, fungi that act as natural pest control. One of NAST’s Outstanding Young Scientists (OYS), Cumagun also holds the prestigious title of UP Scientist. These twin recognitions made me lobby strongly for his receiving the TOYM award, which he did. I am glad to see his painstaking work continues to this day. Dr. Ma. For decades, De Ungria and her team have used forensics to resolve parentage issues, to identify remains of victims of fires, to help in sexual assault and child abuse cases and to aid in other criminal investigations. De Ungria’s team continues to research the genetics of different local ethno-linguistic groups to understand better our people’s genetic history. An OYS and a TOYM award recipient, De Ungria is also in the Gawad Chancellor UP Hall of Fame for Research. She is one scientist whom I not only respect, but also have affection for. Some years ago, when a

Zara Medal for his various herbal antiviral products. In his past work as a barber, Dela Cruz saw how much his clients suffered from skin diseases such as warts, moles, fungal infections. Using extracts from the cashew nut and other herbs, Dela Cruz came up with healing creams, the most popular of which are DeMole and DeWart. Most radical of all was his claim that his products could treat patients with basal cell carcinoma. In the Pinoy Achievers website (filipinoachievers.wordpress.com), he is quoted as saying, “By mere application of the cream, with no radical and unacceptable surgeries or procedures, 14 patients with skin cancer were cured in 16 weeks. No recurrences were reported.” His inventions won the Tuklas Award from the Department of Science and Technology in 1998. Since then, Dela Cruz has won gold medals at inventors’ fairs in Malaysia, Russia, Germany and United Kingdom.

His latest award is long overdue. Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla Newborn screening Research cannot be done in a vacuum, and administrators can make or break scientific efforts. Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla received the Dioscoro L. Umali Medal for her remarkable leadership in human genome institutions and research teams. Her research interests span the gamut from pediatrics to human genetics to inborn metabolic disorders. She holds clinic at Medical City, St. Luke’s Medical Center, Manila Doctors Hospital and Philippine Children’s Medical Center. She is also a professor at the Department of Pediatrics at the UP College of Medicine. But Padilla is most recognized for her institutional leadership. She established the country’s first Medical Genetics Unit at the UP College of Medicine, which became the Institute of Human Genetics. Padilla’s most lasting legacy is her advocacy for newborn screening, which can detect and treat inherited conditions in infants that can lead to mental retardation or even death, if undiagnosed. In 1996, Padilla convinced the Department of Health to include newborn screening in its national program. Then she lobbied for the Newborn Screening Bill to become law, which happened in 2004. In 2006, she became director of the Newborn Screening Program of the National Institutes of Health in UP Manila, a position she holds to this day. The citation for her 2004 Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award reads: “Dr. Padilla’s passion for newborn screening has not only saved countless infants from certain death; it has also saved others from … mental retardation.” http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/248419/outstanding-filipino-science-innovators#ixzz3uTfap2Z9

In a developing country like Philippines, teaching ideas are now upgraded. Some teachers and entrepreneurs are using power points instead of Manila paper, they are also using audio records instead of speaking in front, instead of long discussion they’re using educational videos, so what kind of gadget can help them more? A projector, an optical device

that projects an image or video, some creating images by shining a light while some are using lasers. A visual projector is too large and somehow hard to assemble, so they made a gadget that is easy to fix and also to bring anytime, anywhere. The UO Smart Beam Laser, it measures 2.2 inches, with a 4.5 cm height, width and depth, weighing 129 grams. A cube sized projector

using laser diodes for advanced LCOS engine, with a real 720 p HD projector, uses 35 lumens OLP projector and rechargeable battery up to 2 hours. The only thing you need to do is to use USB connector, connect the other one to your phone. Being a teacher or a speaker is a hard profession, so atleast by using it, they’re rigor and hardship will be lessened.

Voyage for Progenitures By Jay Mark Cundangan

Destructive typhoons, drought and heat that killed plants, animals and humans are one of the natures revenge to human’s irresponsible actions. Too much heat that changed everything in our world, the polar bears that lived on icebergs before are now swimming on melted ices and can’t find tough ice that can handle and support their weight. The rains that helped the farmers before are rains that destroying their crops now. Those icebergs are kept on melting because of too much heat and raised of our sea level. If people keep on ruining and neglecting all these happenings, where can we live if the Earth will became a large mass of water? Mars is fourth planet in the solar system, which is also known as the Red planet because of its iron oxide prevalent. Mars having features of Moon’s craters and volcanoes, valleys, dessert and polar ice caps, its rotational period and seasonal cycles are somehow similar to Earth,

it’s also tilted that produces the seasons. It has two small and irregularly shaped moon called Phobos and Deimons. Phobos rises in the west, sets in the east and rises again in just 11 hours, while Deimos is just outside synchronous orbit. Its atmospheric compositions are 95.97% carbon dioxide%, 1.93 argon%, 1.89% nitrogen, 0.146% oxygen and etc. It’s a terrestrial planet that consists of minerals containing silicon and oxygen, compare to Earth, Mars is less dense than Earth. In 2002, the non-profit Mars One announced plans to colonize the red planet, they will send people to live on Mars and those will go or send can no longer return. In more than 200,000 people in different places around the world who applied to be one of four humans that will be sent on Mars, 660 finalists are now on process of selection. The next round involves more filmed interviews and group interviews and group challenges to see their team

work. The first mission is worth $6 bn (£4 bn) that aims to send two women in a space craft. There are plans, in 2018; they would send a trial run for communication satellite for messaging. In 2020, an intelligent rover will be sent to scope, a good landing site, far enough north to contain a good amount of water. In 2022, six cargo missions head off for Mars, it also include another rover, two living units, life support units and these contained 3,000 liters of water and 120 kg of oxygen. After this mission, Mars One’s crews were planned for take off in 2026. Those explorations are good to see, our development, our intelligence and our success, but we can’t hide the facts that our Earth is now undergoing and experiencing climate change because of our selfishness, carelessness and negligence. So try to find ways to give the next generation a better future and leave them a legacy.

FAST TRACK CHARGER By Kariya Kaye Frayna

Waiting for long hours to charge your cell phone, wait no more, say goodbye to dull waiting hours thanks to Eesha Khare. An 18-year-old high-school student from Saratoga, California invented a very useful and time saver device. The fast charging device called SUPER CAPACITOR is a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space that can charge quickly and holds its charge for a long time. It can charged a battery for just 20 to 30 seconds and what’s more in this device is it can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles unlike the ordinary rechargeable batteries that can only take 1,000 cycles. Eesha’s invention won $50,000 prize money at an international science fair for creating an energy storage device also known as the SUPER CAPACITOR. “My cell phone battery always dies” according to Eesha when the NBC News asked her what inspired her to work on the energy storage technology. Eesha enjoys building the super capacitor because it allows her to focus on

her interest which is nanochemistry. She also used the super capacitor to light up an LED or the light emitting diode. This invention makes our future brighter.

Philippines, is a country which is surrounded by the bodies of water and we are also aware that it is one of the countries that has problems regarding electricity especially in rural places. Aisa Mijeno, a computer engineer, her brother Ralph, and Engr. Joefrey Frias created a special lamp that works with salt solution in a glass of water combined with two tablespoons of salt. The lamp can give light for about 8 hours. This lamp is eco-friendly and is much safer than the kerosene-fed lamp that the Filipinos usually use. The lamp also can be powered by sea water so the people nearby the ocean and sea can get their water and used it as their light. It also has an emergency port where you can charge your phones by plugging in the USB cable. This project was created to help the less fortunate people who don’t have access to electricity. According to the Philippine Institute for Development studies, almost 16 million families don’t have access to electricity. This is why Aisa with the help of the social workers invented

this amazing salt powered lamp. Aisa Mijeno was inspired to create this lamp to help the people in Butbut tribe in Buscalan. They don’t have electricity that’s why when the sun sets the life in the mountain halts stop. To have light they either make a fire or walk to the nearest town to buy fuel for their lamps. This amazing invention is called SALT, or Sustainable Alternative Lighting. The brightness of this lamp is equivalent to seven candles or a low-LED bulb. Although this idea was great Mijeno didn’t have the resources to make it materialize. Luckily, a technopreneur boot camp in De La Salle Lipa hosted by Ideaspace Foundation called entries in its yearly startup competition. She pitched her ideas and was accepted. The incubator fund soft support her ideas which led to the creation of SALT. Just last year Mijeno, and her invention won the People’s Choice Award at Startup Nations Summit 2014, which was held in Seoul, South Korea.

Batang Gilas Out-smart Iraq, stays unbeaten in FIBA Asia U-16

Donaire is back as World Champion By Jay Mark Cundangan HEART STRONG. Batang Gilas go hard all the way to the championship.

By Jonalyn Managaysay THE PHILIPPINE National under-16 basketball team topped Iraq, 78-69, to open the second round of the 2015 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship, Sunday evening at the Britama Arena in Jakarta. Gian Mamuyac had 16 points off the bench and the Filipino young-

sters built a 60-44 lead at the end of the third quarter and went on to cruise to victory. The Filipinos forced Iraq to commit 35 turnovers, which they converted into 27 points. Batang Gilas snatched the trophy of its four games in the tournament and currently has 3-0 record in the second round, but has yet to face power house squads including China and Korea. n

FIBA ASIA made in CHINA

“A LOT of guys would have quit (after hurting their angle) but I’m mentally strong. I fought my mental fatigue. I’m never going to give up. Juarez was amazing too. He was going to give me a tough fight whether I hurt my ankle or not, this was my toughest fight,” uttered Donaire. Nonito Donaire Jr. won over Mexican boxer Cesar Juarez by unanimous decision last Friday, December 11, 2015 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The both contenders really exert extreme efforts, pains and fortitude just to have the hopedfor vacant WBO Super bantamweight title. The Philippines rejoices the triumph of Nonito Donaire, 33 years old Filipino-American boxer who has a record of 39 fights with 36 wins and 3 losses over the 24 years old Mexican boxer, Juarez who has a record of 21 fights with 17 wins and 4 losses. Donaire outclassed Juarez over the first half of the bout, shocked his lesser experienced foe with accurate power punches to the head and body while on the move, and drop-

ping the Mexican twice in Round 4. Juarez (17-4, 13 KOs) looked miserable but he was fearless. His perseverance was rewarded when Donaire twisted his left ankle near the end of Round 6. Once the lateral movement of “the Filipino Flash” was hindered, Juarez took full advantage by pressing Donaire to the ropes and teeing off in Round 7. Nevertheless, Donaire returned fire, throwing counter rights and lead hooks when pushed back on his heels. By Round 11, Donaire’s

left eye was injured and swollen, blood dripped from a cut above his right eye. Juarez’s nose and mouth poured blood as he stalked forward. Juarez kept Donaire on the ropes for most of Round 12, outworking the veteran fighter, but the experienced man stood and traded in spots, landing the more attention-grabbing shots. n

Bulacan PWD Team snatches 32 Medals!

By Jerico B. Soriano ”LET THEM COME play in front of Philippine fans, there’s the real fans. These are fake fans. They don’t know the game of basketball and they just sit up there and cheer when they’re told to cheer,” Baldwin said. “They don’t bother us at all. Noise is noise. What’s that got to do with anything? Nothing. We’re not interested in that.” These were the words uttered by Tab Baldwin, Head Coach of Gilas Pilipinas in the midst of controversy over China basketball team. Many stories behind the fight between Philippines and China emerged; from the shuttle bus to the game itself. Many basketball fanatics raised their eyebrows with the calls of referees during the game that even the Gilas players just scratched their heads in astonishment every time the refs whistle. Some Sports personalities local and international can’t help but display disgusts to FIBA ASIA that even NBA superstar Kobe Bryant said “I was told that the Philippine team was having issues with transportation or something similar. The fishy thing is when they only attempted to fix the net when their crew was warming up. I’m not pointing fingers, but you know there’s got to be something going

on, I didn’t think too much about the early calls, but when they called the Filipino point guard for travelling while he was dribbling the ball, I knew something was wrong,” Bryant said referring to a moment in the game when Jayson Castro William was called for a travel although he never moved his pivot foot before dribbling the ball. The Philippines may mourn the calls it didn’t get during the final. Perhaps with some more favorable officiating it had a chance to pull out the win in the fourth quarter. That said, the lack of efficiency on offense also played a key role in the loss. Gilas Pilipinas’ aspiration to get the championship cannot be questioned. They fought hard every step of the game. Though they came up a bit short in this event, they provided reason for optimism moving ahead. “Heart hurts right now...but huge thanks to those that support Gilas! Another opportunity in July to get to Rio. #LabanPilipinas” tweeted by Gabe Norwood after the game. Now, the team will need to pull it out in one of the Olympic qualifying tournaments next July to earn a trip to Brazil. That gives them seven months to persist in building off the progress they made during the FIBA Asia Championship. n

Gilas Lipana claws 2nd spot By Maricel Rodriguez THE GILAS team of FCLNHS clawed the second spot in the Eddis II meet last October 8, 2015 at Malolos Sports Complex with the standing 2-1 in their games. FCLNHS humbled the Felipe National High School, 51-38. Gilas Lipanians delivered blazing shots that made their opponents hard to close the score. Lipana put a terminal on the first game. However, the team from Lolomboy National High School defeated FCLNHS. It was a close fight during the first quarter but towards the end of the first half the point guard Heart Christian Principe suffered from ankle sprain that made the game favored to Bocaue with score 44-25. The game between FCLNHS and Mariano Ponce National High School heightens the excitement among the basketball fans. Mariano Ponce bearing 2-0 standing made the Gilas Lipanians to work harder inside the court. The players from both teams try

to revamp their scores. Inside and outside shots were delivered. They took back every point their foes delivered. Towards the fifteen seconds of the last quarter the pass from Heart Christian Principe to BJ Facundo made the Lipanians won over Mariano Ponce by a one point lead with the score 48-47 with the play made by Mr. Rezalde A. Orillosa, trainer of Gilas Lipanians. FCLNHS, LNHS and MPNHS ended with a three-way-tie but, LNHS won by a quotient system and will be the team who will advance to the Provincial Meet. “It is very disappointing that we wasn’t able to make it to the provincial meet this year, but I am very proud with Gilas Lipanians, they are the smallest line-up among the teams but they were able to deliver it big” said Orillosa. Mr. William P. Cruz, head coach of the team is very thankful with the support of the school as well as the students. “This year may not our year, but who knows, next year might be ours” uttered Cruz. n

GO HARD. Gilas Lipana gripped the ball tightly as they play head to head during EDDIS II meet.

Warriors flaunt their

sizzling spikes and towering blocks that made them the Champion. In Basketball, Grade 9 Warriors also grab the victory as they humbled the grade 10 players, 67-55. The mini “Blur“ By Brian dela Torre KILALA nyo ba si BJ Facundo?”

TAKE IT FROM THE EXPERT. Former PBA player Tyron Tang inspires Gilas Lipana to persue their dreams.

Mighty Sports donates basketball rings to FCLNHS By Jented Mendoza FELIZARDO C. Lipana National High School in partnership with the Mighty Corporation Accessories and Apparels conducted the Turn-Over Ceremony for receiving basketball rings and equipment held at FCLNHS covered court, December 3, 2015. Mr. Wong Chu King, owner of

Mighty Corporation Accessories and Apparels granted the wish of Ms. Aquilina R. Monte, Principal III and Mr. Regalado Hernandez, Head Teacher I in MAPEH this is in part of the Social Corporate Responsibility of the said company. Mrs. Loida Hilario led the opening remarks for the eight representatives of Mighty Corporation together with Jonathan Sy- Alvarado,

Tyron Tang, basketball player of Rain or Shine and on behalf of Mr. King, Mr. Eloy Del Rosario, an officer of Mighty Corporation attended the ceremony. Mr. Tang gives an inspirational message to Lipanians especially to the athletes who dreams to become professional basketball players in the near future. He also showcases his skills in basketball. n

I asked several students as I walk towards their room. “Ahh opo ‘yung maliit?” they laughed. Finally, there he a 14 year old BJ Facundo smiles at me as I started asking. “Franz Joeben Facundo po,” he said. Franz Joeben Facundo or also known as BJ is the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Facundo, a barangay tanod and a housewife. He is the youngest in the family that’s why he is very eager to pursue his dreams. Inside the four corners of the court is where BJ’s real journey starts. It is where he started to believe, dream and love. I asked him, “Bakit ka naglalaro? Para saan?” His sparking eyes showed me the rainbow he wants to reach. “Kase gusto ko talagang maging player ng PBA eh. Masaya nga ako na Jayson Castro daw ako eh. Happy ganun. Saka para din sa kuya ko. Matagal na kase ‘yun hindi nakakapaglaro, nag asawa na. Sayang at magaling pa naman s’ya. Shooter yun! Kaya ako nlang ang magtutuloy ng mga pangarap nya”, he stated. BJ Facundo’s childish

sweet smile glanced. But inside the court BJ is a not a child anymore. He turns to a monster. “Halimaw yan eh! Hahaha”, of his friends said. Seriously, he becomes a lightning in the midst of the game. In one instance, he was called as FCLNHS’ Jayson Castro who is currently playing for Talk ‘n Text Tropang Texters as their point guard. Castro was also hailed as FIBA Asia’s “Best Point Guard”. Just like Castro, Facundo lacks in height but it has never been a barrier to reach their dreams and find success. BJ saved their game (Gilas Lipanians) last October 8, 2015 during the EDDIS II Athletic Meet held at Malolos Sports Complex at Malolos City, Bulacan. In the last 15 seconds, Facundo passed the ball to Prinsipe who made a two-point shot which lead them to 2nd spot. Today, he is a proud Lipanian, but tomorrow Lipana and the whole Philippines will surely be proud of him! The next time I will ask the same question “Kilala nyo ba si BJ?” I won’t be surprised if they will answer me “Ahh… Oo! ‘Yung magaling na basketball player!”
