Plant Replacement Plan By Vanessa Dreyer, Community Manager

T

his month, we have a major project happening that is part of several community wide initiatives designed to enhance the aesthetics of the community. We talking about our Landscape Renovation Program. We inspected all homes looking for yards where the number of plants or the number of different plant species in the yard needed to be increased. We sent communication to 224 residents who need to participate in the program. Our goal is to help make renovating their yard easy and cost effective. In order to achieve this goal, we are inviting residents to attend a landscape seminar being held by Caretaker on September 8 at 9:00am at the Mountain Vista Club. Anthony and Scott Cosgrove will be onsite to introduce residents to various plants within the community plant palette.

give you a $100 gift card to Home Depot or Lowes to help you further your efforts! We’ll also be feeding all those who are taking advantage of the program and will have hot dogs and refreshments at the community center on the day of the sale. Of course, with 224 homes potentially participating in the program, the community could use a few extra hands! We’re asking for volunteers to help out their neighbors who need to get plants in the ground even if it’s just a few holes that need to be dug. Working together, we can get a lot done. If you’re willing to volunteer to help a neighbor or you have questions about the program, please contact me at vdreyer@ccmcnet.com. See you on the 22nd!

These plants will be on sale at a discounted rate at the first ever Vistancia Plant Sale. That day we will turn the parking lot into a nursery and residents can come down as early at 7:30am on September 22nd. The day will serve as a community wide planting party as everyone heads to their yards to spruce them up! All residents are invited to attend the plant sale. As Caretaker will be bringing the plants out from nurseries, we ask that all residents please pre-order their plants so Caretaker knows how many of each plant to bring out on site. The order form will be available at the landscape seminar and on the website under the Forms tab. We have some great incentives beyond easy plant pickup and low prices! We’ll be holding a before and after contest for yards that really take the spirit of the program to heart. Take pictures of your yard and if your yard shows the greatest improvement after, we’ll

ith over 4,000 residents currently living in Village A and multiple new home builder’s joining the community in the coming months, it was a good time to revisit the community identity and put a personality and name around the place that our residents call home. A new logo has been created to represent the community that has been officially named The Village at Vistancia. Thoughtful planning and consideration helped execute the creation of The Village logo. The Villages’ core amenities include the Mountain Vista

Club and Foothills Center, both focused on water-based activities that offer residents an enjoyable, fun and playful experience. You will see the use of the new logo in developer marketing communications such as Vistancia.com, brochures, marketing materials and throughout The Information Center. The sense of community and the vibrant spirit that The Village offers is unsurpassable and continues to make The Village a desirable place to call home.

>>> COVENANTS CORNER

Grass vs Desert Landscaping? By Jessica Smith, Covenants Coordinator

S

o you’ve decided you want your yard to be the talk of the neighborhood? You have two options, grass landscaping or desert landscaping, how do you determine which is the better option? Many of us would prefer to have colorful landscaping and therefore grass would be the best option. Or would it? Homeowners who attempt to grow grass in transition zones where warm- and coolseason grasses can each be grown may face a battle to keep their lawns healthy and looking their best. Installing grass is one thing but keeping it lush and green all summer is another. We all want to cut costs and conserve water, but a lawn that is not maintained and watered properly may be more susceptible to weeds, diseases and pests. Many of us don’t have the energy to dethatch, fertilize, overseed, and maintain weed control and a mowing regimen regularly. Thankfully there is another option. Desert landscaping can be amazingly attractive. A great desert landscape will result in a look that captures the natural beauty of the expansive desert while at the same time turning a blind eye to some of its less attractive elements. In addition to the exceptional aesthetic value offered by a desert look, desert landscaping also offers many additional advantages. Desert landscaping is cost-effective. Water is expensive when used in substantial quantities, and trying to maintain a more traditional yard in an area that is not served with a great deal of rainfall can become quite expensive. By choosing plants and elements accustomed to a low-moisture environment, one can benefit financially. Desert landscaping allows us to make use of plants that will perform to their utmost in the environment. It is possible to create and maintain a lush green lawn in the middle of the desert through frequent watering. However, no matter what one does in order to foster its growth, it will never be as strong and resilient as in their indigenous surroundings. Desert landscaping takes advantage of that natural truth by using plants that thrive in dryer conditions. Vistancia has a very extensive list of plant materials that are not only beautiful and will withstand the heat from the summer months, but will also thrive in our Arizona weather. Please contact me at jsmith@ccmcnet.com for more details on approved plant materials.

his summer has been busy despite the high temperatures we’ve had. We have been working with Vanessa Dreyer on elements of the strategic plan that was put together in the late winter of 2012. Together, we have created a solid plan to get as many plants in the community replaced as possible.

Phase Three of the two-year plant replacement plan has been detailed and the work is vast. Last month, the Board approved the installation of approximately 2,500 plants along Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Ridgeline and Whispering Ridge. Vanessa and I spent many hot summer mornings walking the roads to determine plant counts and the best species of plant to use given the existing plant palette. The Association will be putting in a mix of approximately 75 percent one-gallon plants and 25 percent five-gallon plants. This helps reduce costs by installing smaller sized versions of plants that will grow quickly. Last year, our planting period was cut short due to an unseasonable cold snap. This year, we are starting planting mid-September as we have a lot of plants to get in the ground! Installation will take several weeks.

oin us for an evening of Vegas fun right here in Vistancia! Casino Night will take place on Saturday, September 15th from 6pm-9pm in the Mountain Vista Club Gym.

“This is an event that residents have requested,” says Vistancia Village’s Lifestyle Director Lauren Stephan. “We’re excited to have our first Vistancia casino night and we hope to meet our maximum attendance.”

10 | SEPTEMBER 2012 | VISTANCIA LIVING

Attendees will try their luck at a variety of casino games, including Craps, Texas Hold’em Poker, Blackjack and Roulette. But instead of gambling with real money, players will gamble with poker chips that are traded in for raffle tickets at evening’s end. The more chips they win the more chances they’ll have to walk away with one. In all, more than 20 prizes will be raffled off. And with a maximum attendance of 200 people, the odds of winning are better than any real casino can claim.

Harrianne Kopel Vistancia Resident Harrianne Kopel believes in getting involved in her community. “The first event I ever attended in Vistancia was Harvest Daze,” she fondly recalls. “I was so impressed that I asked around to find out what I could do to help.” That was six years ago. Harrianne promptly joined the activities committee and has since helped to plan and execute many of the events that Vistancia residents enjoy all throughout the year. Among her favorites is Western Night, she says because “everybody seems to let their inner cowboy out!” “My favorite volunteer experience has to be Christmas. The kids are all done up and are so cute when they come to see Santa. Things run so smoothly and the parents are so appreciative that it makes me glad to be a part of it.” Stephan credits generous residents and local businesses for such a strong showing in the prize department. “We’re very fortunate to have such dedicated residents and supportive sponsors for our events,” she says. “And we would like to give a big thank you to all of the Vistancia residents and businesses who donated a prize for Casino Night!”

In addition, Harrianne insists that Coffee Talk on the first Friday of the month isn’t to be missed. “It’s a great way to welcome the newcomers and share information about everything from places to find great deals to the best spots to eat.”

The first 200 residents to RSVP to mrobinson@ccmcnet.com will be put on the guest list. Tickets are $10 per person if purchased in advance and $15 per person at the door. Office hours will be extended on Friday, September 14th until 6:00pm to accommodate residents who do not return home until after 5pm. Tickets will include your poker chips and hor’doevres. Wine and beer will be available to purchase at the bar. Remember to bring your ID! Stay tuned to your eblasts for a complete list of prizes and sponsors! Here are the sponsors and prizes we have lined up to date: AZ Boune Pro: Margarita Machine Rental Galloway Realty: $100 Gift Card Gabi Jade Artistry: Special Event Make-up Applications Lia Sophia: Jewelry Liberty Mutual: $100 gift card Oregano Gold: A gift basket with a variety of gourmet coffee Stella and Dot: Jewelry Sports Jerseys AZ: Peyton Manning Jersey Maria Michaels: Bionic Bands Zona Communications: Idea-Pad by Android Ted Massouras, SolarCity (602) 999-0971: 1 week stay at an Interval International Resort - valued at $2,000

Did you know that Vistancia has a Poker Club that meets bi-weekly? Check out their website at www.vistanciapoker.com. We would like to note that 25% of the proceeds will be given to a local non-profit organization. If you have a non-profit that would like to be considered for an event, please contact Lauren at lstephan@ ccmcnet.com. You may also contact Lauren if your business would like to donate a prize for the event.

But it’s not just the events that warrant mention. Vistancia is overflowing with classes and clubs to satisfy myriad interests. Harrianne’s latest obsession is Water Aerobics. “It’s a fun and dedicated group. I’ve made many friends there and have shared great times with these people in and out of the water. Since starting classes, I have gained greater strength and better balance and there has been a modest weight loss, too! I have less pain in my legs and I believe that too is a benefit of working out in the water.” Originally from back East, Harrianne moved to Arizona in 1996 from her native Kingston, MA in part to flee the cold weather and occasional hurricane. Then during the housing boom, she had the opportunity to relocate and looked at several places, including other planned communities. “When my agent brought me here and I saw the pool area and neighborhoods, I fell in love with Vistancia.” Harrianne is currently retired and lives with her soul mate, Donald, and their dog Buddha, whom they rescued from the local animal shelter.

ith movies like Brave and Hunger Games making a big splash at the box office, many young people have been looking for a way to explore the excitement and challenge of archery. Thanks to a Vistancia resident with archery experience and some dedicated community support, there is now a archery club right here in our area! Shoot For Life [www.sflarizona.org] passes on the love of archery to students 10 and up using a safe, fun, and proven teaching method used in thousands of schools and clubs world wide. Whether picking up the bow for the first time, or sharpening advanced skills, the Shoot For Life clinics will produce positive results. Joe Darago, the lead instructor, is certified by the Arizona Game and Fish to teach archery to students and has personally been involved in the sport since he was in high school. Since December he has taught over 50 students in Vistancia how to safely and effectively shoot a bow! Not only does Shoot For Life help students enjoy archery, but thanks to the partnership of Vistancia Elementary School and Journey Church, Shoot For Life clinics are easy on the wallet while providing students with quality equipment from Arizona’s own PSE Archery out of Tucson.

This September 10th-13th there will be two clinics offered in Vistancia. One will be for beginner level students (those new or just starting out in archery) and another for the more advanced level students (able to hit the target consistently close to aim point). Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early. You can find information, videos, pictures and register your student on the website www.sflarizona.org.

Fall Healthy Habits By Chris Farley, Spa & Wellness Director, Alvea Spa, Trilogy at Vistancia

S

ummer doesn’t feel entirely over yet, however, according to the calendar we are about to encounter fall and this is the perfect time of year to focus on you. Creating time to start or restart an exercise program and understanding the importance of relaxation will ensure an enjoyable and successful holiday season and end of the year.

On the flip side of exercise, relaxation via massage is the perfect way to take care of yourself and honor all the hard work you do. Taking the time to relax with a nurturing massage has numerous health benefits beyond just feeling good, including allowing your body time to recover from the work you’ve done. Massage can also lower blood pressure, increase overall circulation, improve posture, improve skin tone and increase flexibility along with numerous other health benefits beyond the just feeling great aspect. There are many techniques that are followed among the various types of massage with the most popular feel good massage being the Swedish massage, offering the relaxing benefits of kneading and effleurage (long strokes). We, at Alvea Spa, call this our Classic Massage but also offer all types of massage, including our specialty—Alvea Hot Rock Therapy. After your massage, it is a good time to make personal commitments to a healthier lifestyle because you will find yourself in a relaxed, clear state of mind. This can be a great motivator that will kick start a regular exercise program along with eating healthier and honoring your body.

With the change of the cooler weather, it becomes easier to get motivated to workout, especially with the incredible scenic views of Vistancia. Although a brisk walk on Discovery Trail is perfect, it might be a good time to dust off those old fitness videos, take a yoga class, go for a swim, ride your bike, join or go to the gym. You may also consider finding a workout partner to help get you started as well as add continued motivation along the way.

Take time to plan for a healthier lifestyle; and if there is any way that we can assist in the process, please never hesitate to call us, we are always happy to help. Alvea Spa can be reached at 623-2156290. We are nestled inside Trilogy at Vistancia and are open to the public. Beyond offering Massage, we also provide Facial services, Manicures, Pedicures, a Full Hair Salon as well as Naturopathic Care including Acupuncture from Dr. Amy Whittington.

Lake Pleasant Emergency Response By Cathy Carlat, Councilmember, Mesquite District, City of Peoria

O

ften referred to as the “Jewel of the Desert,” Lake Pleasant has become a treasured destination, not only for Peoria residents but for people from every corner of the Valley of the Sun. Lake Pleasant is located within Peoria city limits and is managed by multiple jurisdictions including Peoria, Maricopa County, and the Bureau of Reclamation. The lake functions as a storage reservoir for Central Arizona Project as well as a major recreation destination. As popularity of the second largest lake in Arizona continues to rise, public safety becomes increasingly important. Currently, the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office maintains policing of the lake, while the Peoria Fire Department is responsible for emergency situations. The City of Peoria recently received grant funding for the Tohono O’odham Nation to purchase a state of the art Emergency, Medical, Fire, and Rescue Watercraft. In addition, the City of Peoria received grant funding from the US Department of Homeland Security to hire six additional fire fighters to staff Lake Pleasant. The funds are part of a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant. The combination of these grants is exciting and extremely important. Without the aid of these two grants, we simply would not have the $1.1 million to fund these critical resources. The Peoria Fire

Department just moved years ahead in their ability to respond to citizens and meet their needs in emergency situations in and around Lake Pleasant. Over the next year, the Peoria Fire Department will also be replacing one of the normal brush trucks with a 4x4 off-road engine/pumper, which will be stationed at the Lake Pleasant fire station. This vehicle will significantly reduce response times in the difficult terrains around the Lake and throughout the northern area of the City. We anticipate the arrival of the vehicle near spring of 2013. I am thrilled to see these improvements that will assist us in making the experiences of every citizen as safe as possible at Peoria’s “Jewel of the Desert”. To keep updated about what is happening in your city, register for the Mesquite District electronic news alerts by visiting www. peoriaaz.gov/mesquite. Peoria Police Partners With Project Lifesaver By Officer Don Watts

“Bringing Loved Ones Home”

is the motto of Project Lifesaver (PL). In 1999, a retired police officer in Virginia saw the need to develop a way to more quickly locate persons that have wandered away from their caregivers due to medical conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, Autism or Downs Syndrome. Using state of the art technology, Project Lifesaver has had over 2,543 successful rescues. The program has also grown to over 1250 agencies across the United States. This year the Peoria Police Department has partnered with Project Lifesaver to offer this service to our citizens. The concept is simple; a wristband is worn by the loved one that emits a specific RF signal. When a person wanders away from home, a team of specially trained officers respond with a Project Lifesaver receiver
