Motorhead Magazine Mourns the Loss of Robert J. D’Uva

The Italian American community of Rhode Island lost one of its honored and adored members on Thursday, February 18th.

Federal Hill lost its fiercest advocate, and the State of Rhode Island lost one of its most beloved members of the media. Many people lost a great friend. Robert J. D’Uva, founder and Publisher of the Rhode Island Echo and long-me President of the Federal Hill Commerce Associaon died unexpectedly in his Johnston home. Bob aended Johnston Public Schools and later graduated from Roger Williams College (now Roger Williams University) with an Associates Degree in Business Administraon and a Bachelor’s Degree in American Polical Science. Aer college he started his career in the media as an Adversing Sales Representave for the Pawtuxet Valley Daily Times (now the Kent County Times).

her, Bob was confident that a “specialty” newspaper would be successful. He was right. The Rhode Island Echo will publish its 100th edion in April. On a side note, Bob’s family will connue to publish the paper in his legacy. Beyond the Rhode Island Echo, Bob also pitched in to help numerous community organizaons including the Loggia Piave #364, an Italo-American organizaon that named him their “Merit Award Recipient” in 2007 and served as Director at the DaVinci Center for Community Progress on Charles Street in Providence. Bob was a huge advocate for local businesses and restaurants and never stopped finding ways to help them succeed. But through all his success and community involvement, there was nothing that maered more to Bob than his family. He and his brother Anthony Jr. grew up on Webster Avenue in Providence, and four years later his mother Jean and father Anthony Sr. would move the family to Johnston, where they remained most of their lives. Along the way Bob married his beloved Susan. The two were inseparable unl he lost her to cancer in 2006.

He would later take a posion at WBRU Radio (then located at Brown University) and later joined the staff at the sales department at WHJJ and WHJY radio.

The couple would have two children, Charloe, who resides in Colorado, and Elizabeth of Rhode Island. Elizabeth and her husband Andrew Choiniere have two children, Stella and Leo.

His media travels would take him back to the Pawtuxet Valley Daily Times where he was very visible in the Pawtuxet Valley Community, serving as President of the Pawtuxet Valley Chamber of Commerce for two terms.

There was nothing that Bob enjoyed more than spending me with his grandchildren and proudly boasng about his daughters. Bob will also be sadly missed by his longme girlfriend Yitee Tarr of Cranston.

In 2012, Bob had the greatest idea of all – publish a newspaper that would capture the spirit and posive aspects of the State of Rhode Island. He named it the Rhode Island Echo, a name that had remembrances of the past and at the same me a bold step into the future.

Bob was the heart of Rhode Island. He was a force of nature who believed in the good of people. He was constantly on the go and forever networking. He got along with everyone. He had a love of singing and music and could not get enough of the band, Toto. He loved Rodney Dangerfield jokes, Johnny Carson re-runs and driing to sleep watching Bob Ross. There was no one prouder of his Italian heritage. If he wasn’t at home, he was probably at his other home- Federal Hill.

Undaunted by the naysayers that said that print media’s best days were behind

FERRUCCIO LAMBORGHINI’S ARGUMENT

From left to right: Giotto Bizzarrini, Ferruccio Lamborghini and Gian Paolo Dallara at Sant’Agata Bolognese in 1963, with a Lamborghini V12 engine prototype.

By ALLEN “VIPPRIMO” HARRIS of Executive Automotive Society The story of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s argument with Enzo about how to build a car is stuff of legends, but few people talk about what was truly born of that argument. Sure, we could talk about the Miura or the Countach, the face of the company. We could also talk about the Jalpa or the Gallardo that used other power plants, but the true heart of these machines cannot be ignored. The reality is the V12 powered the company for more than 40 years and inspired the automotive world for even longer! The Lamborghini V12 was birthed to the public at the 1964 Geneva Auto Show powering the 350GT concept. It was created by Giotto Bizzarrini to compete again Ferrari. Rumor was that Ferruccio even paid him a bonus for every horsepower it

made over the Ferrari. It made, what could be called today a lackluster, 280 horsepower with 3.5 liters, but back then it was on par with the Ferrari power. So that’s all it needed to make an impact. The truth is the Miura took that powerplant and went to task with upwards of 380 horsepower coming from its transverse mounted V12. It would be no secret that the Miura was not the first vehicle to be called a supercar, but it’s the first one to make it stick and the same V12 that powered the 400GT, only now with 3.9 liters of displacement, was the one lodged in its engine bay. The V12 had now defined a generation. Even with the legend of the Miura at play the world was looking for something even more consumable and they got that with the futuristic Countach. Making upward of 455 horsepower, the Countach reimagined the title of exotic vehicle. In 1982 the LP5000 S broke 182 mph powered by Ferruccio Lamborghini

a bigger 4.7-liter displaced version of the same V12. The V12 had now acquired arguably the most sought-after trophy for its mantle. At this time Lamborghini had fallen on hard times and Chrysler had picked up the brand and decided to redefine it. Much of the underpinnings of the brand remained the same, but the body would now be called the Diablo. The V12 would carry the company onward. The Diablo was no slouch and Chrysler had planned to allow the brand to spread its wings a bit, but still it was the V12 that was still carrying the torch. Much of the Diablo’s time it lived with a 485 horsepower 5.7 liter, a well-liked displacement number as well. The Diablo would see many iterations, but it was mostly a consistent car as Lamborghini went through its most stormy period. That would change in 1998 when Audi decided to throw the brand a life-preserver. It would introduce the Diablo to the legendary 6.0 variant making up to 575 horsepower as Audi began to massage the brand back to life. The V12 had made it out the other side and proved it still had something left to give. Things would all come to a head when in 2001 Lamborghini began producing another variant; the Murcielago. Again, underneath the facade the

vehicle appeared much like it had in the past, but things were beginning to look up. Long needed performance options were being added and although they did have some growing pains the path was straight and narrow. The V12 had now become a 6.2 liter with 572 horsepower, but it had found new youthful vigor. It was time for the V12 to make its comeback. Lamborghini had found new life and the Murcielago would continue to grow with it when its best loved 6.5 liter came to bear. It produced 631 horsepower, besting its past life by almost 60 horsepower. The beauty is it could also stretch its legs and it found its way into many of the most expensive Lamborghinis ever produced, finally landing in the 670 Super Veloce making a tell-tale 670 horsepower. It was this platform that would be the launching point to what Lamborghini would become, reinforcing some ideals and leaving others behind as the brand finally found itself. Vehicles like the Reventon would test new carbon fiber technology and new aero design. Lamborghini had officially become an identity. The V12 had now inspired future generations. The V12 was still a powerhouse, but by the end of the Murcielago, Lamborghini had decided it was time to pass the torch. A lucrative Lamborghini

had design power and the pockets to fund a new engine to go with its innovative carbon technology and with it decided to retire the noble heart of the bull that had survived the test of time, overcome the matador, and boldly lived up to its nameplate. The V12 had set the standard by which Lamborghini would always follow. It’s impossible to calculate how many vehicles were inspired by the Lamborghini V12 or how many children it sired, but I dare say the Lamborghini brand was never the Miura, the Murcielago or even the infamous Countach. In reality, Lamborghini was an engine with a big heart that came from humble beginnings to live on in venerable greatness. Dare I say a gentleman engine that wasn’t afraid to take the gloves off and fight the good fight if it needed to. One that withstood the test of time and refused to succumb to the pressure. One that would instill fear in any matador that would dare get in the ring with it. Unapologetic and unforgiving, it still, even today, requires you to step up to its level, but it will happily share its experience and passion to anyone that dares grab it by the horns, apply their foot to the throttle and embrace the bull inside us all. #lamborghini #v12 #inspiration #innovation

ONLY IN LARRY QUINTAL

Any of us in our 50’s are drawn to our beloved Mustangs, Camaros, GTO’s, Javelin’s, Chevelle’s, Challenger’s, just to name a few. As they are getting more and more harder to find and going up in value, we forget the new generation of people in their teens, twenties and thirties who have their beloved machines.

Okinawa, Japan for a customer that backed out of the deal. Phil immediately bought it. It was as if he went on a blind date and she ended up being Wonder Woman.

As I drive my 72 Dart Swinger powered with a 383 big block or my wife’s 68 Mustang with the Beach Boys or the Rolling Stones blasting from my two Pioneer speakers, and a kid in a foreign car with tall spoilers, neon lights, loud music coming from somewhere with music lyrics I can’t understand and rims almost on the ground, I think to myself, they don’t know what they are missing. Driving a beautiful hunk of metal with no power steering, the old school rumble of Smithy’s glasspacks and even real metal bumpers, oh and not to mention, crank down windows and a built-in ash tray. Don’t they realize they are missing out on our generation of street machines? The answer is NO. Truth is most of these imports with turbos produce more power and represent their generation of street machines. I recently had an opportunity to talk with Phil Gaspar, Co- owner of Hyde Paving, Inc. of Taunton, MA. Since the age of 12 Phil knew just what he wanted, a Nissan Silvia, SR 20-DE 4 cyl with a right-hand drive. I know, like I thought…what the heck is that? Well, the more I spoke with Phil the more I understood. I had to separate my thoughts of when I was 12. I wanted a 1970 Barracuda in the worst way but ended up with a VW Bug (which if I only knew what I knew today, I would have kept it.) As I spoke with Phil I totally understood what a Nissan Silvia is, especially when it is imported from Japan. Finally, at the age of 28 Phil’s dream came true. He took a ride to Connecticut to visit a friend who is the owner of Blacked Out Motor Sports to possibly buy some type of import. After an hour or so walking around looking at what was for sale, he saw a wall of tires Phil has only been able to track down one other of this type of car in New England. According to Phil, what makes this car so rare is - because in Japan - the older a car gets the more you must pay tax on it, so most people in Japan have them crushed and buy new ones. He has made just a few upgrades to his car such as OEM sideskirts only available for one year as an option. When attending car shows, people are drawn to this car because they have never seen such a car in the USA. When not working, Phil devotes his time as president of the Silver City Stance Car Club of Taunton, MA. A major twist to this story is Phil started Cars for Kid’s. He coordinates other car enthusiast to join him drive by the houses of children who are sick and make them smile. In January of this year, Phil was contacted by a family of a 2-year-old boy who has brain cancer to have his club drive by their home. Over 300 people came together, even Taunton’s Mayor Shaunna O’Connell, Taunton PD, Taunton FD, and many more, joined Phil. We here at Motorhead Magazine thank Phil for not only leading the next generation of car enthusiasts but using their passion for cars to create memories and to brighten up a child’s day. Thanks for supporting Motorhead Magazine.

in one of the garages. Phil asked, what is behind those tires? Well…. guess what? It was a 1997 Nissan Silvia SR 20-DE 4 cyl, 5 speed manual trans that was imported from CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

CRUISIN’ 2021 SEASON By JIM WEICHERDING

Well folks, by the time you read this issue of Motorhead Magazine it will be the month of March, 2021. Spring is coming, and hopefully, so is the start of getting back to some relative normalcy in our lives. It’s been a very long twelve months since everything was put on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic invading our life on so many levels. Stay at home orders. Business owners forced to close their doors. Nobody allowed to leave their homes for the most part until mid-July of last year and that came with widespread restrictions and new rules regarding wearing face masks and keeping a safe distance from anyone around us for more than fifteen minutes at a time. I know it directly impacted the car show scene in a very big way. Cancelled, cancelled and yes, cancelled, was the pro dominating word for 2020 car shows and cruise nights here across the region and across the USA. One of those impacted car shows was the Bass Pro Shop and Gillette Stadium bi-weekly car shows hosted every other Thursday by the Mass Cruisers. It wasn’t postponed. It was cancelled for the season. Why? Because it’s the only car show in the region that attracted thousands of classic cars, classic trucks and spectators for each one of its shows, not each one of its seasons. It’s the grand slam of car shows. It takes hours just to walk the grounds in order to see every classic car and truck on display every other Thursday in New England. Spectators? Cannot count them all. There are more kids and adults attracted to this venue than most sporting events during the summer months. I’ve been communicating with individuals involved with this car show and if restrictions are eased and the vaccine does what everyone hopes it will do to keep everyone safe and healthy, then this venue is slated to start on Thursday, April 8th, 2021. Face masks will more than likely be a continued requirement, but that’s a small inconvenience to deal with if it means regaining some form of car show and cruise night normalcy this cruisin’ season. Motorhead is also introducing a new Car Show Calendar Page that will feature cool photos of area owned muscle cars, hot rods, rat rods and pick up trucks with the following month car show and cruise night schedule dates listed as a resource section that everyone, and anyone involved with the car show scene, will retain and view again, and again, just to see where the next automotive event will be happening locally and across

the region. Then, I won’t be asked a hundred times a week where these events are taking place when I’m attending a car show and cruise night this cruisin’ season. I attend and showcase at more than one hundred of them annually, so everyone always asks me what’s going on and where it’s going on when it comes to these automotive venues. I’m passing out a lot of Motorhead Magazines along with my Buckleupallofus Kids and Family Traffic Safety Coloring Posters, Fridge Magnets, Vehicle Air Fresheners, Stickers and Coloring Books to everyone by the thousands all season from Memorial Day Weekend thru Halloween Weekend anyway, so now I can just tell everyone it’s listed in Motorhead Magazine. Check it out! With any luck, this year will be much better than last year, even if it’s a later than normal start time, when it comes to the Cruisin’ Season. Hoping most of them will begin in April as planned. But the month of May would be okay too. Better than starting on a limited basis sporadically late July and early August like last year and that was just with a handful of automotive venues hosting car shows and cruise nights safely following state issued pandemic restrictions and rules. Look for more car show and cruise night articles over the coming months and check out our new Motorhead Car Show Calendar Page for all of the automotive events and venues across the region this year. Now, more than ever, information about these venues happening will be on the minds of every cruisin’ scene enthusiast passionate about attending area car shows and cruise nights across New England. I know I’ll be there and hopefully so will you. Have a safe and healthy cruisin’ 2021 season.

THE SHY STUNTRESS In the February 2021 issue of Motorhead Magazine, we published an article about Shy-Anne Boisvert who has been stunt riding since July, 2020.

The photographer’s name was not provided when the article was submitted. We recognize that the photos were taken by Adam Noschang.

The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first

This new version of the original bad boy holds a whopping 7.0 V8 engine (firing off at 505 horsepower and 481 foot pounds of torque) that is pulled forward by a six speed TREMEC TR6060 transmission and a rear wheel drive high performance TORSEN helical limited-slip differential. Braking power is far from obsolete with Brembo carbon-ceramic performance

four wheel anti-lock disc brakes and there are Multimatic DSSV dampers. A dual-mode performance exhaust gives the car a nice rumble but will surely not cause any headaches. The car is lubricated by a dry sump oiling system and has a standard track-designed cooling system that is liquid to liquid between the oil lubrication, the transmission, and differential. The chassis is rolled off by nineteen inch forged aluminum wheels with high performance Pirelli PZeroTrofeo R “summer only” tires.

By BILL HORNE THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM Back in the late 80’s, Ford released what I thought was the coolest “store bought” performance car of the time. When I first saw a 1988 Mustang as a 16-year-old kid, I knew I had to have one! Shortly after high school, as luck would have it, my girlfriend’s family had a 1988 Mustang that they were working on. I watched the car sit with not much being done to it for some time, so I asked to buy it. Next thing I knew, I was the proud owner of my very first Ford Mustang! It was a bit rough around the edges and didn’t run but that didn’t matter. I found a 302 from a police car and promptly got to work cleaning the car up and installing the newCALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

to-me motor. After I got it running, I added nitrous to it and that’s about when the horsepower bug “bit”. I was able to drive the car for a year or so before finding out I was going to be a father. I had to sell the car but promised myself I’d buy another one because that horsepower “bug” was still there. Fast forward a few years, I stumbled upon a “for sale” ad for a 1988 Mustang project car that caught my eye. The price was right, so I bought it and soon after, my second Mustang build was under way. Literally a shell of a car with a pile of parts in boxes, this build intrigued me because it came with a Vortech supercharger. I never owned a boosted car before, so I was excited to see what it was all about. With a little more experience under my belt this go-round, I rebuilt the motor myself and assembled the whole car. After I got it running, I felt it needed a look over by someone who knew a little more about tuning than I did. My friend Billy turned me on to a local shop that specializes in building and tuning fast cars, SD Concept Engineering, Inc. I brought the car to them for a look over and tuning.

transmission after the manual transmission stripped a few teeth while on the dyno. I continued to hone my skills in as a driver, eventually geng the car to run 10.20’s at 136 mph in the ¼ mile. That came at a price, though, as I pushed that stock block beyond its capabilities. I knew I was running on the ragged edge but was willing to push it to see

Scott worked with me to upgrade a few parts and dial the car in to hit my target goal of 550 rear wheel horsepower. This car got me into drag racing. I brought it up to New England Dragway in Epping, NH. My very first pass was an 11.70 ET with my boosted stock 302 cid, 5 speed Mustang. While that was exciting and I learned a lot, it still wasn’t fast enough! I decided to switch over to an automatic

how far it would go. and intake. I put the supercharger back on and drove it around. In the back of my mind, I knew this car wasn’t my “dream car” and I still wanted more horsepower. I started looking around to see what else was “out there” for sale. As luck would have it, I found another 1988 Mustang for sale online. It was a much more solid car than the other two I started with. I offered the seller a pile of cash and a parts car I had kicking around and next thing I knew it was on my trailer heading home with me! The original plan was to recycle the engine and supercharger from the previous Mustang and do a few upgrades to the rest of the drivetrain to try to reach my new performance goals. After leaning on my friends for advice along with some guidance from Scott, I quickly realized my new goals of 1000HP would require a fresh start. Especially because I wanted a car that I could use for more than just racing. It had to maintain the street-ability, durability, and reliability with minimal maintenance. I quickly realized that was going to require more than just throwing a bunch of parts at it. In 2009, Scott and his team at SDCE worked with me on my third 1988 Mustang build. Instead of having them do just the tuning, I decided to have them build the entire car. Twelve years later, many many street miles, and a fair amount of drag passes in the 10’s and 9’s under my belt, it continues to religiously deliver all I ask of it and is still going strong! It is extremely street friendly, reliable and Fast as F___! All in all, I have a car I can hop in, cruise to the track, rip off some 8 second passes, and drive it home if I choose to. I can also take it to get groceries, or hit a car show or cruise. I like being able to enjoy my car for the majori-

Overall, I’m very happy with how my dream car turned out and it continues to impress me every time I use it. Third time really is a charm for me, thanks to Scott and SDCE, who helped me achieve my goals! READERS RIDES

KATHY’S 1966 T-BIRD

JIM WEICHERDING

When it comes to Ford T-Birds, Kathy Cote’s ride should be put on the list of one of the clean classic cars on Rhode Island’s roadways. Kathy’s 2-door hardtop was purchased twelve years ago and she only put on 1,000 miles since first buying this vehicle. Kathy enjoyed driving

years by installing a new exhaust system, distributor, tune up, brake booster and master cylinder. You need to keep these parts up to date and quality if you want to stop a T-Bird when necessary to do so. He also replaced vacuum hoses and installed a new vacuum canister. The entire top of the steering column was rebuilt as well.

The Ford T-Bird body is solid and well maintained. And, if by chance, you are searching for a nice, clean, Ford T-Bird with original 57,700 miles on the odometer, you are in luck. This Readers Rides is actually for sale. A photo speaks a thousand words and looking at this classic ride photos tells a great story. Anyone interested in this beautiful Ford T-Bird can contact Kathy or Marc by calling 401-418-0936 for more information. Asking price is $6,500. her classic ride to area car shows and cruise nights over the past ten years. The classic ride purchase price plus upgrades cost her approximately $9,500 over a ten year timeline. The 390ci engine runs great and this car is a real nice and comfortable ride. BASH FOR NASH

COME SUPPORT TEAM NASH AT THIS FUN-FILLED EVENT!

Matt and Valerie Rogers of Brentwood, NH and their 4 children are fighting a storm like no other - one that was silently brewing, and for which no family could ever prepare. Just two short weeks before Christmas, Nash was diagnosed with an aggressive, inoperable, and incurable cancerous tumor on his brain stem. The tumor is classified as DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma). Unfortunately, the prognosis is bleak. DIPG primarily affects children, with most diagnoses occurring between 5 and 7 years of age. This rare form of cancer makes up only 10-15% of all brain tumors in children, with about 150300 new diagnoses per year in the Unites States. Unfortunately, fewer than 10% of children survive past two years from their diagnosis. Their days now consist of meeting with doctors, managing daily trips to Boston, helping Nash remain comfortable through treatments, and still being there for their three beautiful daughters. Nash has had a biopsy, has completed radiation treatments, and will hopefully qualify for a clinical trial in the very near future. To learn more about this disease, please check out DIPG.org. 36| Motorhead Magazine - March 2021

As you can imagine Matt and Val’s world was turned upside down in an instant! Life will never be the same for the Rogers family, a proud military family. Matt served his country in the Navy and is currently serving in the Air National Guard. They have 4 children Lucca (13), Sayla (11), Nash (8), and Gretta (6), and their loyal Lab named Mazie. Nash is a sweet 8-year-old boy (as cute as they come) who is funny and full of wit and energy. Over the years his love for cars has grown into an infatuation, thanks in part to his dad who builds hot rods and restores motorcycles. Nash (named after the car) is a self-proclaimed “car guy” - famous for waking up at 4:00 AM to help with The American Legion Post 35 Swap Meets at New England Dragway. Recently, while resting in Boston for one of his treatments, he spent the entire day watching Grease Monkey Garage and other TV car shows. Nash has a hilarious sense of humor and is adored by all who meet him. He is always kind to others and is loved by his classmates and teachers at Swasey Central School. type of kid and a genuinely happy little guy. He’s a little boy full of spirit and love, fighting a tougher battle than most could even comprehend. All the while he does it with strength and bravery. He is deeply loved by all who are blessed to know him. Right now, making memories and ‘Living in the Moment’ is the main focus. Every big and little moment for Nash, his sisters and their family are the highest priority of all. With heartfelt sadness, the reality is, time is tragically short. Please help us celebrate Nash’s bravery and strength, spread awareness for DIPG, and support the future funding for research of this devastating cancer in the hope for a cure. The Rogers family is doing their best fighting for Nash but bringing awareness and remembering ALL those children fighting with this awful disease is also a strong priority of theirs.

Ginger Cat Prowls in NJ By ROB MAY and JOHN SLATE We celebrate the 45th anniversary of the 1976 Mercury Cougars with this fine example of the last of the 4th Generation (1974-1976) Cats. John Slate, born and raised in Wantage, NJ noticed this XR-7 while driving around in 2009. The Cat sitting on the side of the road was for sale, and it was love at first site. After a quick once over John told the seller he would take the Mercury then and

there. “The car was so clean I couldn’t pass on it.” With 63000 miles, no rust, great interior, it purred like a kitten. The seller had it fully serviced in preparation to sell with the addition of new front brakes, new 2bb carb, new gas tank, and a new fuel pump installed (obviously the fuel went bad from lack of use). “When I returned with my wife, Michelle, and my 2 sons to pick up the car, they loved it. My youngest son, Logan, called it Ginger at first site. She has been referred to as Ginger since. LOL, to this day we have no idea where a 5-year old came up with that. I think it works because of her red top.” Most everything on this Cougar was original. The worn vinyl top was removed and top painted to resemble vinyl. “With some polishing, I brought the original black paint back to life. One piece of trim was slightly dented that I was able to repair. Searching for a side molding with maroon inlay made me realize how hard it is to find parts for these year Cougars. It also taught me the gentle technique of how to repair and polish moldings.” The Cat ran well, but it was a little under powered. The 400 engine was sent out for a mild performance rebuild. “I reinstalled the engine

adding some extras such as Mallory ignition, Ford valve covers, K&N filters, Taylor wires, 268h cam, Hooker headers, and much more. I plan to keep this one, so everything that was questionable was replaced.” While the engine was out, the power steering pump and box, master cylinder, balancer, motor mounts, radiator, belts, and hoses were all replaced. The original C6 was gone through with a shift kit and stall converter added. Flowmaster mufflers were installed with downspout pipes at the axle. No more purring like a kitten she growled like Continued Next Page

a full-grown cat now. “For the suspension, I installed new springs and shocks to give it the stance. The 9-inch rear received a Detroit Locker with 3.85 gears. (I don’t do road trips, but I love the 0-60 time this combo brings). I went through and replaced anything in the brake and steering system that was worn or even questionable.” Cragar style wheels and Mastercraft white letter tires were added. 215/70/15 front 275/60/15 rear. The black split bench interior was left stock except for a ratchet shifter, a shift light and new carpet. This Cat hasn’t seen rain or bad weather since John acquired her. During the nice weather months in northern NJ, you’ll find Ginger cruising around. “I especially enjoy cruise nights and events with my car club (State Line Car Club). We’re a small group of great people who love to spend time with cars, each other, and supporting our community and local businesses.” One of its most unique attribute is her rarity. “Of all the local car shows I have been to in my life, I have had the only ’74 - ‘76 Cougar there. Many people ask me about my car and say they knew someone who had one but no one that currently has one now. Ginger has won a few trophies in the past, but John’s biggest trophy is smiles, car chats, and thumbs up from people. “I usually visit 10 shows a year along with weekly cruise nights during the season.” “My Cougar has a wonderful story that is dear to my heart for the following reasons: The car was bought new at the Mercury dealer a few miles from my house. I purchased it from the original owner 10 miles from my house. A friend of mine owned the Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership where Ginger was sold new. He has since passed on, RIP Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson sold Ginger to the original owner who was one of my teachers in high school. The car was maintained its whole life by another friend who owns a local service station. My oldest son Gavin and his date were chauffeured to his 8th grade Graduation dance in Ginger. This car has spent its whole life in this zip code.” Ginger is a wonderful piece of history.

“He was my best buddy, a huge part of every project I’ve done, almost every show I’ve done. He will always ride with me.” - Erik Modzelewski

By ROB MAY and ERIK MODZELEWSKI East bound and down, we are going to do what they say can’t be done…This fast-paced article is dedicated to Dennis Modzelewski: His son, Erik of Southgate, Michigan shares the story. “The Bandit had been my dream car since I was three years old, watching Smokey and the Bandit on TV playing with my Hot Wheels car and Snowman rig (that I still have).” In 2006, Erik decided to get his dream car. After looking at a couple cars, he found the perfect donor car to become the Bandit. It started with a silver (and primer) 1981 Trans Am that was rust free with a fresh 355 ci

small block with a stout cam, 850 Holly double pumper carb and long tube headers. The Pontiac had 4-wheel disc brakes, black interior that needed some work, and of course T-tops. “Over the next six years, my friends and my Dad transformed it into the 1977 special edition Trans Am Bandit.” They changed the nose, taillights (and the tail pan behind the taillights), rear bumper, wheel flares, trunk spoiler, fuel tank, and restored a set of 1977 snowflake wheels by hand. Panels were fitted and block sanded before painted. “After a base/clear, I had to find someone to apply the graphics. As luck would have it, I got

the same guy that put the graphics on the cars used in the movie (and all the other Trans Ams back in the 70’s)!” “Once it actually became the Bandit, some amazing things have happened...when we got married, it was outside at our house. The Bandit was displayed out on the front lawn. One of my favorite pictures is my wife throwing her veil out the T-top just like Sally Field. of my friends’ cars were part of a special display with WCSX radio at the Woodward Cruise.” At two special screenings of Smokey and the Bandit, this Trans Am was used as the feature vehicle. The first was Back to the Bricks “Bricks Flicks” at the US23 Drive-In in Flint parked up under the screen for the movie and the car show earlier in the day. The second was with the car on stage at the Redford Theatre. ‘It was absolutely amazing to stand in the middle of the Theatre and see the car I built under ten spotlights! It was great sharing that experience with my family and friends.” One day a friend of Erik was at a Semi-truck show in Dundee. He sent a picture of a truck at the show, a replica of the Snowman rig! It had the trailer with the huge mural on the side. “So, I jumped in the Trans Am and shot down the freeway to the show.” The car and the truck together got a great response. “A local Sheriff even showed up and took a bunch of pictures with the patrol car with the lights on. What I love about it most it was the hard work and support of my family that brought my dream to reality. I am very proud to say that my Dad was with me every step of the way, and he enjoyed it almost as much as I did.” Erik lost his Dad a couple weeks ago. “He was my best buddy, a huge part of every project I’ve done, almost every show I’ve done. THIS CAR IS UNDER ATTACK. THE WATER IN YOUR COOLANT IS RUTHLESS.

Fight boilover and corrosion with the only waterless coolant. The water in your coolant is your engine’s worst enemy. It lurks in your engine’s cooling system, waiting to boil, expand and build pressure. Causing boilover, bursting hoses and corroding your engine’s components. That’s why Evans is 100% waterless.

WATER*... THE LIQUID THAT HAS WATER*... THE BEST HEAT TRANSFER ABILITY

Here’s a question most car enthusiasts think they know the answer to: What liquid has the best heat transfer ability?

Answer: Water* (yes, that’s an asterisk, meaning it’s questionable, further information needed, it depends, or not always). If “not always”, then when isn’t water the best performing heat transfer liquid? Answer: When it gets above its boiling point and changes from a liquid to a vapor. Well then, how well does water vapor transfer heat? Answer: It doesn’t. Water loses 96% of its heat transfer ability when it turns to vapor. When water approaches its boiling point vapor pockets form, the cooling system metals get hot, pressure builds, and the liquid can boil over. In an engine’s cooling system, water, and water-based coolants work well… until they don’t. Unlike water, Evans Waterless High Performance Coolant has a boiling point of 375°F, over 150° higher than water, and will remain liquid even under extreme conditions. Like the energizer bunny, Evans keeps on going, and going, and going… and does its job past the failure point of water. Vapor will not form, pressure remains low, and the coolant will not boil over. Evans provides constant liquid-to-metal contact and cooling system metals remain under control. This is why Steve Williams, NHRA 2018 Champion, and other top competitors use Evans to gain a performance advantage without fear of a cooling system failure.

preservation of their valuable collections. Last question:

Here’s another question most people know the answer to:

How dangerous is the vapor pressure in your cooling system?

What liquid is most responsible for promoting corrosion in an engine?

Answer: Extremely. If you dispute this answer, would you lean over and open your radiator cap after your engine has been running? Of course not. You may end up in the hospital with severe burns.

Answer: Water (no asterisk needed here). Water promotes corrosion and electrolysis, and the deterioration occurs from the inside out – anywhere water is exposed to the metal. Replacing pumps, thermostats, and radiators are not only expensive, but a pain in the

Evans Coolant operates under a much lower, safer pressure – about 2 to 4 pounds – and will not be forced out by excessive vapor pressure. Hoses, seals, and gaskets are under reduced stress and will last longer. And for this reason – the lower pressure reducing the risk of coolant spilling out - the NHRA has allowed Evans for use on the drag race tracks. butt. The right coolant can help avoid those problems. With the absence of water, Evans Waterless Coolant prevents corrosion and electrolysis, prolonging the life of cooling system components. This is why many of the top museums and collectors use Evans to ensure long term

PRO STOCK/MOTORSPORTS NEWS EVENT SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR 47TH ICEBREAKER By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA Waterbury, VT — The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) and Pro All Stars Series (PASS) have announced the schedule of events and ticketing information for the 47th Icebreaker at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 10 and 11. The 10-division card is highlighted by the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Thompson Outlaw Open Modified Series plus other top local and regional classes. In a shift from previous years, all 10 of the divisions competing on Icebreaker weekend will have a “one-day” format. Six divisions have their qualifying and features on Saturday, April 10 with the Icebreaker 125 and remaining divisions set for Sunday, April 11. While teams may attend the Friday Test N’ Tune and other practice opportunities during the weekend, they can also practice, qualify, and race in a single day if they choose. The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models, EXIT Realty Pro Truck Challenge, Sunoco Modifieds, 8-Cylinder Street Stock Open, NEMA Lite Midgets, and Mini Stocks will qualify and race on Saturday, April 10. The Outlaw Open Modified Series, Late Models, Limited Sportsmen, and SK Light Modifieds are slated for Sunday, April 11. Separate general admission tickets will be sold for each day. Post time is 1:00pm for Saturday’s card and 1:15pm on Sunday. The optional Test N’ Tune on Friday, April 9 goes from 11:00am to 5:00pm. All local and state health and safety mandates will be in effect throughout the weekend. “We think this schedule format is in everyone’s best interests,” ACT managing partner Cris Michaud said. “The one-day race format accommodates teams have other things going on in their lives and simply aren’t able to make it to the track for an entire weekend. Fans also won’t have to buy a ticket for both days if they can only attend one of them. It gives people more flexibility so they can enjoy as much racing as they want.” “This format is a significant money-saver for teams,” PASS president Tom Mayberry added. “With qualifying and features on the same day, that’s one fewer night of hotels and other expenses that traveling teams have to pay for. Those costs can add up fast, and we don’t want teams to burn through a big chunk of their budget at the first race. It sets them up so they can potentially go to more races throughout the year.” Adult admission for the Icebreaker is $30 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday. Kids ages 12 and under are $10 both days. Grandstand attendance is currently limited to 25% of capacity per the latest Connecticut state guidelines. ACT and PASS are monitoring the guidelines for any potential updates before race weekend. Advance ticket sales will begin within the next week. Visit www.thompsonspeedway.com/reservations to reserve a camping spot. With more than a month remaining before the Icebreaker 125, the entry list is already full of the top names in tour-type Modified racing. It’s shaping up as a big-time start to the six-event series that includes the return of the Thompson 300 on October 9-10. Former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champions Doug Coby, Bobby Santos III, and Ronnie Silk have officially committed to chase the $10,000 top prize. So have former Modified Racing Series champions Jon McKennedy, Anthony Nocella, and Chris Pasteryak. Other notable drivers on the entry list include Keith Rocco, Eric Goodale, Richard Savary, and Ronnie Williams. The PASS Super Late Models headline the Saturday program with a 75lap main event. PASS has been a part of every Icebreaker since 2016. This year’s event is the opener of both the PASS North and Northern 54| Motorhead Magazine - March 2021

Series championships. The NEMA Lite Midgets and EXIT Realty Pro Trucks are returning for another Icebreaker while the $1,000-to-win Street Stock Open was recently added after a wildly successful outing at the most recent World Series of Speedway Racing. ACT and PASS officials have also added bonus laps for many of the local divisions. The Late Models will run a 40-lap feature on Sunday while the Sunoco Modifieds go 30 laps on Saturday. Both the Limited Sportsmen and SK Light Modifieds have 25-lap Sunday features with the 4-cylinder Mini Stocks slated for 20 laps as part of the Saturday card. The Late Model feature is the first event in the ACT New England Late Model Challenge Cup, a region-wide series for weekly teams at eligible tracks. The Icebreaker 125 and Thompson 300 entry forms, along with the rules for the Outlaw Open Modified Series, are available at www. acttour.com/outlaw-open-modifieds. The early-entry deadlines for the Icebreaker is March 15. Information about the local division and Open Street Stock rules is online at www.acttour.com/thompson-speedway. Thompson Speedway opens its 82nd season of oval track racing with the 47th Icebreaker on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11. The 10-division card includes the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Thompson Outlaw Open Modified Series, the PASS Super Late Models, and eight other divisions. An optional Test N’ Tune practice day is slated for Friday, April 9 with all Icebreaker divisions welcome. Grandstand attendance is limited to 25% of capacity. For more information about the American-Canadian Tour, contact the ACT offices at (802) 244-6963, media@acttour.com, or visit www. acttour.com. NINE NEW ENGLAND TRACKS REGISTERED WITH POINT FUND THAT COULD EXCEED $20,000 Waterbury, VT — After a one-year delay, The New England Late Model Challenge Cup (NELMCC) is finally debuting in 2021 — and it will be even bigger than originally planned. American-Canadian Tour (ACT) officials confirmed today that nine tracks have signed up for the first season of the series that will pit weekly Late Model racers from across the region in a summer-long battle for pride, glory, and some serious prize money. The inaugural Challenge Cup was originally slated for the 2020 season before being pushed back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The basic format remains the same, with registered drivers taking their 10 best eligible finishes at participating tracks towards the season-long point standings. However, the scope of the program has grown tremendously during the one-year hiatus. Nine tracks from four New England states have signed up, nearly double the amount that were originally registered for 2020.

PRO STOCK/MOTORSPORTS NEWS The increase in tracks also means an increase in the season-ending awards. A guaranteed minimum point fund of $14,000 has been posted for the Challenge Cup. The $100 registration fee for each driver will also be added to the point fund in full. For example, if 40 drivers sign up for the series, another $4,000 would be added to the point fund for a total of $18,000.

To register for the New England Late Model Challenge Cup, drivers must submit the entry form along with a $100 registration fee by Monday, April 5. Entries postmarked by Monday, March 1 will be eligible for the Hoosier tire drawing. The entry form and point system outline are available at www.acttour.com/NELMCC and on participating track websites.

Should registration be on pace with the 2020 pre-pandemic numbers, the total point fund could exceed $20,000. A minimum prize of $3,000 goes to the overall winner. At least the top-10 drivers in the final standings will receive payouts.

For more information, contact the ACT offices at (802) 244-6963, media@acttour.com, or visit www.acttour.com. You can also get updates on Facebook and Twitter at @ACTTour.

Several big contingency and raffle awards have been posted, adding even more value to the program for racer. A Port City Chassis by Crazy Horse Racing will be raffled off at season’s end. To qualify for the chassis raffle, drivers must register by the deadline and attempt to qualify for at least 10 point-counting events. ARBodies and Five Star Bodies are each awarding a $500 product certificate. Drivers who finish in the overall top-10 and have declared they are running an AR or Five Star body will be eligible for these raffles. Drivers who register by the early-entry deadline of March 1 will also be entered into a Hoosier Tire raffle. Two randomly chosen entrants each receive two free ACT Late Model tires from Hoosier. ACT will also honor the tire awards of the 2020 pre-pandemic raffle winners if they register for this year’s Challenge Cup. “This program is a huge step forward for weekly Late Model racing in New England,” ACT managing partner Cris Michaud said. “The Challenge Cup was one of the things we were most excited about in 2020 before the pandemic. Now, with nearly twice as many tracks on board plus some great contingency partners, it’s going to be even bigger for teams and fans.” “Weekly racers are the backbone of the sport, and it’s important to reward them for their efforts,” Michaud went on. “We’ve come up with a program that does so and which we think will boost car counts and action throughout the region.” Four tracks from the original 2020 slate will return for the 2021 debut: Barre, VT’s Thunder Road Speedbowl; North Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park; Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park; and Massachusetts’ Seekonk Speedway. Five other tracks have joined the Challenge Cup. Connecticut’s New London-Waterford Speedbowl will be the second Connecticut track. Furthermore, four tracks from the New Hampshire Short Track Racing Association (NHSTRA) have signed up: Monadnock Speedway, Lee USA Speedway, Hudson Speedway, and Claremont Speedway. Any competitor at the four NHSTRA tracks must use the ACT Late Model rules option the organization has introduced for the 2021 season. In other words, cars need to be 100% ACT legal for drivers to earn Challenge Cup points.

OUTLAW OPEN ENTRY LISTS LOADING UP FOR ICEBREAKER, THOMPSON 300 Waterbury, VT — The Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park oval is shaping up as the place to watch the biggest stars of Tour-Type Modified Racing in 2021. Entry lists for both the Icebreaker 125 on April 10/11 and the return of the Thompson 300 on October 9/10 are already loaded with local, regional, and even national open-wheel racing headliners. As the first and last events of the season at the historic Connecticut track, both the Icebreaker and the Thompson 300 are expected to be the year’s two greatest shows. The early entries back up these expectations with a mix of touring series champions, track champions, and big-time winners in the Modified ranks. With so many top drivers ready for action, the buzz that has surrounded the events for months will only get louder. Leading the roll call is six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby of Milford, CT. The modern Modified legend has filed entries for both the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 and the $20,000-towin Thompson 300. Coby will compete at the Icebreaker in the #20CT Modified Rick Czarnecki. For the Thompson 300, he will be behind the wheel of his own Doug Coby Racing #10CT car that debuted in 2020. Coby is one of multiple drivers planning to do double-duty with the Icebreaker and the NASCAR Modified Tour event at Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway on April 8. Another is multi-time NASCAR Modified and Modified Racing Series (MRS) winner Eric Goodale of Riverhead, NY. Goodale, who is currently competing in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway, is looking forward to keeping the Thompson Modified tradition alive. Several other notable names have already joined Coby in committing early to both the Icebreaker 125 and Thompson 300. Multi-time Thompson Speedway champion and former NASCAR Weekly Racing Series national champion Keith Rocco of Berlin, CT will be gunning for the two five-figure first prizes in his familiar #57CT. So will former Modified Racing Series (MRS) and International Supermodified Association (ISMA) champion Jonathan McKennedy of Chelmsford, MA.

All weekly Late Model features at participating tracks will be eligible for the Challenge Cup. Registered drivers can earn Challenge Cup points at any of the nine tracks. For example, a Thunder Road Late Model regular can also earn points at White Mountain, and a Thompson Speedway regular can also earn points at New London-Waterford Speedbowl or Monadnock Speedway. A driver’s 10 best performances across all tracks count towards their NELMCC total. Points will be awarded based on finishing position, car count, and cars passed. The full system is available at www.acttour. com/NELMCC. Participating tracks are responsible for reporting results to the ACT offices. ACT Late Model Tour events and “open events” at these tracks are not eligible for Challenge Cup points.

NORTHEAST AUTO BODY FOOD DRIVE EVENT By JIM WEICHERDING Northeast Auto Body recently hosted a food drive drive-through event on December, 19th, 2020 at their place of business. In attendance, were the Grinch, Elf on the Shelf, Santa Claus, Ginger Bread Man, Olaf and a lot of cars and vehicles lit up with Christmas decorations and lights. During the food drive-through event, they were able to receive a thousand canned foods and non-perishable foods that were loaded onto their flatbed transport vehicle and then delivered to the Rhode Island Food Bank. Northeast Auto Body also had live music, a DJ and a fire. DJ Joseph Acciardo Jr., volunteered his services for the food drive. It was a great turnout for a great cause. Feeding families is something everyone needs to be a part of throughout the year but it was especially helpful to host this food drive event during the recent holiday season when families in need are hardest hit. Adding the Coronavirus on top of the normal needs to provide families with food is even more important during the holidays. Northeast Auto Body food drive event attracted a lot of caring people from all over the state and region. Many people remained in the vehicles and dropped off food and canned goods by the hundreds. The food drive event had plenty of support and individuals that offered to help out in this time of need. TIME MACHINE By ROB MAY and PAUL “DOC” NIGH Where we are going, we don’t need roads...our movie vehicle theme goes Back to the Future thanks to Paul “Doc” Nigh of Bakersfield, CA. 64-year old Doc has one daughter, Tamara, and grandson, Blaiden. “I was born and raised in Bakersfield California in a little attached suburb called Oildale. I worked 14 years with the Kern County Sheriff ’s Department as a Reserve Sergeant, and retired in 2010 with 24 years as a Sergeant in the California Department of Corrections.” Doc plays Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Piano, and has been in several bands. “I have been blessed to perform with The ApologetiX Christian Parody Band and Dean from Jan and Dean.” He is also a Master Magician and loves to perform Stage, Close-up, Parlor, Mentalism, and Kids Magic Shows. Doc purchased plenty of used cars along the way including an ’84 Mercury Cougar 5 speed turbo. “However, the best of them all is my 1981 DMC-12 DeLorean Time Machine.” Special effect photos by Oto Godfrey. In 2005, Doc went to Universal Studios in California to a free showing of the movie Back to the Future on the City Walk stage. “That is where I first met Claudia Wells who played the role of Marty McFly’s girlfriend, Jennifer Parker, in the movie. We have gone on to be great friends over the years, and I visit her high-end men’s clothing store, Armani

Wells, when in town.” They had a DeLorean Time Machine on display, and that is also where Doc met its owner and DeLorean Motor Center’s General Manager (later becoming DeLorean Motor Company, California) Danny Botkin. “Danny told me he had access to the actual ‘A’ (Hero) car from the movie and could make me a replica of it. I went to their shop in Garden Grove where I had 10 DeLorean’s to choose from.” The car selected had sat on their back lot for 10 years abandoned by its owner after failing to pay the storage fees. This vehicle was in fair condition, but it did need work to make it drivable again. “Danny started the car repairs and conversion to a DeLorean Time Machine, after replacing every knob and switch in the interior to make the car look new again. Because it was a pay as you go, the build took 2.5 years to complete.” In July of 2007, Doc took possession of the fully paid for Replica DeLorean Time Machine. “By the end of that year, I was already in demand for appearances in the LA Area.” Like all DeLorean Time Machines, it has the standard Time Circuits and Flux Capacitor. “However, my version sports the Mr. Fusion on the back end. We added thousands of dollars of special effects lighting, floods, music, sound bites, and fog to make the show experience more epic.” Continued Next Page

Doc takes the car to as many charities shows as he can in the Central and Southern California areas. “I am also sought after by big corporations for their conventions all over the US. In 2020, I was able to get in a couple Las Vegas Corporate Events before the COVID-19 lockdown.” Doc was able to be part of a few car rallies as traditional cars shows had all been either postponed or cancelled. “I look forward to when we can all join again.” He has been a part of the DeLorean Owners Associations in California, Nevada, and Washington. “As far as trophies go, I do not feel that it is fair for me to compete, so at most shows I do not participate. Yet, I still have quit a few of them anyway. My favorite award was the ‘People’s Choice’ Award at the California DMC’s Open House event in 2007, the first year I had the car and the first trophy I received.” Doc drove the car though all 50 US states in passing or to an event or on tour. Many of the cast and crew signed the car dash. The very first signature received is also the rarest. “While having the car on the back lot at Universal Studios, I met Cristina Ferrare, former wife to John Z. DeLorean. As far as we know my DeLorean is the only one in the world with her signature.” DeLorean Facts for you Detail Car Enthusiasts: Manufacturer: DeLorean Motor Company Production: 1981-1983 (This one in OCT 1981) Assembly: Dunmurry in Northern Ireland Model: DMC-12 (The 12 was supposed to stand for $12,000 Price Tag. Instead, the cars sold around the $25,000 range) Class: Sports Car Body Style: 2 Door Coupe with Gull-wing doors Engine: 2,849 PVR ZMJ-159 V6 (Stage II Engine, Headers, and a Cam - 200hp) Transmission: 5 Speed Manual Length: 166.0 in Width: 73.1 in Designer: Giorgetto Giugiaro “Driving the car is fun, if you like closed in areas and your rear end seeming to scrape the asphalt. It is not the smoothest ride by far, but It is a ton of fun. You will be noticed by everyone that passes and photographed

To learn more about this car please join Doc at wwwTeamTimecar. com or follow him on social media. Facebook is Paul Nigh and Doc Nigh is his fan page. Instagram is BTTFDOC. Twitter is TheTimeCar. “You can read more about me at IMDB.com searching Paul Nigh and Wikipedia searching DeLorean Time Machine. For more information about how you can hire this DeLorean Time Machine for your next event, contact me at BTTF2.Timecar@gmail.com.” “You may have seen my car on The Hollywood Christmas Parade, The Rose Parade, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, “The Last Man on Earth”, Discovery Channel’s Show “The Universe”, many commercials, music videos, magazines, and news papers around the USA.” One of his favorite interviews was seen on the gossip TV show TMZ where later they quoted ‘The Most Loved and Book DeLorean Time Machine in the World’.

by thousands. It’s not a fast car, but then who cares. Understand that the 5-minute gas stops are over with this car. It handles the road very well hugging the pavement and taking curves. The actual turn radius is terrible, and the rack and pinion steering are a bit of a downer. However, it is all worth it after just one ride in the car. The miles of smiles on kids and grownups faces are priceless.” This DeLorean Time Machine has been involved in so many Children’s Charities that there is no way to list them all in this publication which also includes being on an Amazon Discovery Series titled The Fireball Run Adventurally for 10 years that is like the Amazing Race meets motor sports on steroids with a cause as each team also searches for a missing child. “We are Team Timecar #15 and have aided in the successful recovery and return of 3 of the 55 kids located during the shows run until its end in 2018.”

What’s On Your Shelf? What You Should and Shouldn’t Be Tossing This Winter

Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio

The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.

KAYROS AUTO TECH

When perusing through your stash of goods on top off your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful harm to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. MUSCLE & CLASSIC CAR MAINTENANCE & REPAIR

Etch decides it is time to find a gas station and fill up his gas tank before he is driving on just fumes. He would also like to check his oil and fluids if it is at all possible before being spotted by law enforcement searching the area for him and his wanted GTO. Etch eventually rolls up to a full service gas station and the attendant rushes outside to put gas in the classic muscle car. Another attendant heads out the front door of the gas station to check out the ride pulling into the gas station. A couple of teenaged girls are following close behind. “Wow! This car is beautiful. Haven’t seen one of these on the road in quite some time,” said one of the gas station attendants. “We used to work on these old school muscle cars in shop class at our high school but they stopped that awhile back saying we need to focus on new computer tech and electric cars and trucks coming in the future. I felt physically sick when our shop teacher told our class that was the future of automobiles in the USA.” Etch feels like he has been hit by a ton of bricks when he thinks about electric vehicles and vehicles that drive

themselves coming in the not-so-distant future. The gas station attendant and his friends are walking around the GTO taking photos and videos with their camera phones and posting them on their social networks for everyone else to see what they see filling up at the gas station. Their posts are receiving a lot of “Likes” and comments saying how much they all like this classic muscle car. Etch pays the gas station attendant and tells him to keep the change before firing OUTLAW up and heading back onto the roadway. He glances back in his rear view mirror and sees the teens still taking photos and video recording the GTO. Etch looks left, then right, then behind him. He drops the Goat into low and mats the gas pedal. The rear tires are spinning wildly leaving a huge billow of smoke from the burning rubber. The exhaust is so loud the two teenaged girls stop taking photos and videos to cover their ears with both hands. The teen boys are laughing and still video recording as the jet black GTO fishtails onto the blacktop and disappears around the bend out of sight. Etch then thinks

the kids would get a kick out of seeing the GTO come by the gas station again but this time at a high rate of speed. He quickly hits the brake pedal and throws the shifter into low gear. He rotates the steering wheel hard to the left bringing the GTO completely around on the roadway until it is facing in the other direction. The muscle car stops abruptly and Etch looks behind him, and ahead of him, before he mats the gas pedal and slaps the shifter into drive. The GTO front end and tires lift off the pavement, leaning slightly to the right side, as the rear tires grab the black top before starting to spin and leaving a cloud of smoke in its wake. The GTO front end and tires slam down onto the pavement and the car launches back down the roadways headed back to the gas station.

55 Years OF

COMET SIGHTINGS By ROB MAY and RYAN BRANDON QUON

Scheduled for build on March 17, 1966, we celebrate the 55th anniversary of this 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT 390. Now based in Pasadena, CA, the current owner Ryan Brandon Quon was born Dec 1982 in Hollywood CA, the same year the Comet was previously sold in Oct 1982 for $50. Ryan’s graduated from UCLA and is an USPS driver. He also teaches Bruce Lee’s martial arts part-time. “This Comet is my first Ford powered car. I owe my love for Vintage/Muscle Cars to Parents and Vietnam Veteran Uncle including a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7.” Growing up with a gearhead father and his brothers listening to old Lion Drag Strip, Dodger Stadium and random cruises/street races captivated Ryan as a kid. “I started off silently handing my dad simple tools and stood idle watching simple auto repair: brake, oil, starter and water pumps. I wanted something different, a challenge, and found it! I wanted a car not many knew about, the internet did not popularize (yet), and YouTube has not done any ‘my thoughts on this car…’ crap type of video.” He enjoyed the Mercury production line because it conveyed a “step-up” from the basic Ford including the upgraded interior, gauges, small details of emblem badging, and an unique fiberglass hood! Ken Kendall was the second owner of this Comet. Ryan met him in early 2000s. Mr Kendall was originally from SoCal, and it was a son-father relationship from the start. “Ken took me under his wing and educated my thirst for Mercury line of cars. The original plan for this Comet was as a drag/ strip car and started as a “parts car” for Ken. Ken sold me on how unique Mercury was compared to its big bro Ford. I finally purchased the Comet from Ken in 2020 to help with pandemic hardship after knowing the car since 2010.” Newly admitted to the Central California Mercury Club (CCMC), this Mercury is a fine example of a challenging collectible to find parts for as there 66| Motorhead Magazine - March 2021

are literally NO reproduction parts aside from Frankensteining parts from Fairlane line. The suspension, driveline, and motor have all been redone on this Black CA license plated Comet. Ryan advises finding original parts and restore them as the fitment is secure compared to overseas and reproduction parts. When Ken sold the car to Ryan, the car was in poor shape. While the paint was original, he reluctantly had to save the body from further degrading. The rust was treated with anti-rust solvent, and lightly removed the surface rust before body cancer could do major damage. “I have learned Comets rust at the four lower corners of the door skin, and I found some same gauge Ford Metal, cut-out the cancer, and re-weld patches in place. I did the best I could, and the Comet needs more attention to its body.” Miraculously, the car has no under chassis rust, welds, accident damage, or replacement body parts. Suspension work of course was done to give the aggressive semi-gasser drag strip look of the 70s. “The only shop I have done business with outside of my expertise is the Pomona Valley Pot Metal Resto shop. I have all the original emblems and badges.” The front LH/RH ‘Cyclone GT’ & Flags needed peg repair with polish. Every “CYCLONE” letter on the rear

panel below the trunk lid has all been restored and polished. Currently built with a rearend from a 1967 Mustang (4.11 Detroit Locker 31 Spline 9”). 275/60R15 Hoosier Radial GTs sit on the rear 15x7 American Racing Torq Thrust rims while at the front there are 15x6 235/70r15 Hoosiers with Wilwood disc brakes. The Comet is powered by 410 CI with ribbed block forged internals, 10.5:1, Ross, Erson roller cam, C8AE-H heads w/CJ valves, MSD, mated to a TCI C6 Auto 3500 stall w/Hurst Linelock controlled by a Turbo Action Cheetah SCS Shifter. Hooker Headers exit out the 3” custom H Pipe exhaust. Every weekend, Ryan cruises from Pasadena, through El Monte/Alhambra, into Pomona Valley where his parents reside. “My grandfather would say ‘think, who drove that car, who could have owned it?’ For me personally, the best attribute of a vintage ride is the history behind the car. Today, Social Media, YouTube, Barrett Jackson and Mecum auctions barely touch on the past owners and where the car is from. Perhaps it is just me that intrigues the history of any classic auto. I love a good story, and at car shows enjoy conversing with owners about their history alongside the auto.”
