DYNO DIAGNOSTICS!

In June of last year I met a new customer who had a 2002 Pontiac Trans Am with about 180,000 miles on it. It was pretty much a stock Trans Am and only had a SLP Ram Air Cold Air Intake. Stock exhaust manifolds with original catalytic converters and a cat-back exhaust system. When Steve arrived I realized he had a few OBD2 diagnostic codes. P0118, P0141, P0332, P0463, and P1122. After seeing these codes I suspected a we had a couple of mechanical issues that need ed to be sorted out.

I strapped his car on to the dyno and pulled the tune file from his car, which was a 100% stock tune file. My first pull revealed a lean wide open throttle condition and I let out of the throttle by 3500 rpm. The knock sensors were pulling 8-10 degrees of timing and we had a Air/ fuel ratio of 14.5:1 while commanding 11:1 with the stock tune. I check over the data log and every thing looked decent. I added 20% fuel across the rpm range to see if there was any change and flashed

5300 RPM and 326 RWTQ at 4600 RPM. I was impressed that his car with 180,000 miles is still making exactly what it should make with his few modifications. Hopefully, the original 4L60E transmission holds up to the extra power. GM LS motors seems to hold good power even at high mileage.

Precision Dyno offers various camshaft packages for late model GM LS engines. Contact Dave at 401-996-2166 for dyno tuning services.

the LS1B pcm and added a fuel pressure gauge.

I taped it to the front window of the car to view the pressure at wide open throttle. I made another pull on the dyno to around 4500rpm and the car was still around 14.5 AFR and the fuel pressure gauge was reading 45 PSI at 4500 RPM instead of the factory specification of 58 PSI. At that point I realized the car needed a fuel pump and an inspection of the knock sensors and the wiring which has a common issue of chaffed wires.

I gave Steve the bad news, but I also gave him a plan to fix his issues. Earlier this year, Steve had his mechanic install a new GM fuel pump and new knock sensors and he came back for a tune. I made a few adjustment to his tune and it yielded him a respectable 312 RWHP at

Bombshell Bettie’s CHARITY CAR SHOW

Motorhead Magazine recently attended the Bombshell Bettie’s Charity Car Show hosted at the Wallum Lake Rod and Gun Club located in Harrisville, Rhode Island. Harrisville is a town located in the community of Burrillville, Rhode Island. Burrillville is the northernmost

community in the state of Rhode Island. This rural country setting was a perfect place to host this classic car and truck show. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the turnout was fantastic.

Bombshell Bettie’s has be putting on charity car shows for a number of years, attracting large crowds and plenty of show vehicles. This charity car show benefited area veterans. The car show featured food trucks, cigar bar, beer and wine bar, retail vendors, pin-up pageant and more activities throughout the day. Car show began at 11am and ended around 5pm. Bands were playing throughout the day and included The Teledynes, The Supermags, Neutral Nation and Secret Agents playing everyone’s favorite songs live. This 4th Annual Sunday Funday for Vets held raffles and a 50/50 throughout the event. All vehicles pre-1980 were welcome to showcase but anyone could attend. The car show was free to attend but donations were encouraged to help benefit area veterans. It’s was a lot of fun and everyone had a great time. See you next year!

PUREBRED ‘37 Matthew Osborne’s 100% FORD Coupe

ED YESSAIAN

Every single one of us had a dream car when we were young and our reasoning for being drawn to that particular model varies from person to person. It could have been something as simple as a poster on our bedroom wall or a car that our older brother had. For me, I always said I would have a bright red 1969 Pontiac Firebird convertible, like my dad had when I was very young. For Matthew Osborne, his lifelong goal was to someday acquire the 1937 Ford Coupe built by his neighbor and friend Dick Mills. Matthew explains how at just 10 years old he watched the ‘37 taking shape and it was the absolute coolest car he had ever seen. He can still recall the whine of the quick-change rear end as it cruised down the highway, past dozens of admiring glances. Eventually, much to his dismay though, Dick Mills sold the coupe and Matthew felt as if he had lost a relative of sorts.

As Matthew came of age and began the search for a Hot Rod of his own, he always kept that ‘37 in the back of his mind and, despite having dozens of high-performance vehicles over the years, nothing ever filled the void left by that coupe. Over thirty years later Matthew would come across a similar coupe, and that would rekindle his passion for the ‘37. He actually tracked down the original Dick Mills car, out in Kentucky but the car was sold before he could get his hands

on it and shortly after that transaction it was sold again. This time the new owner was definitely not going to part with it. At this point

Matthew decided that he would just build another ‘37 of his own.

Because the ‘37 coupe was a one year only production, it was quite rare and it took Matthew a bit of time to find one. But he was determined to make it happen and finally came across one that had great potential. The car was in very good shape overall, however the majority of the drivetrain was Chevrolet sourced, which disgusted Matthew, as he is a tried and true, bleeding BLUE, kind of guy. This is what drew me to the ‘37!! Like Matthew, I believe in keeping a car true to its roots. While I understand the majority of these cars have a Chevrolet 350 dumped in them, that has never sat right with me and wasn’t going to cut it with Matthew either. Without even driving the car much, he immediately tore into it and “dumped the Chevy Sh*t” into the recycling bin”. It was now time to get to work and Matthew didn’t waste a second.

The piece de resistance of the ‘37 is a Dart block 427 cubic inch powerhouse that certainly puts that old Chevy small block to shame. It’s backed by a built C6 transmission and a Ford based quick change rear end with 3.09 gears, as Matthew recalls that glorious whine from his childhood. This version of the quick change is quite unique though, as it is a front load, meaning that the cover is in the front and the driveshaft goes through it. Matthew says he set the car up this way because he did not want to cut up the rear of the car to make a conventional gearbox fit and did not want to alter the rear suspension as the stance is perfect. For street driving Matthew says he can change to a lower gear in just minutes but with all the power of the 427, it’s not usually necessary. A custom Mustang 2 suspension resides up front and all four corners are decked out with Wilwood Ultralite brakes and Cragar SS mags. With all the mechanical items perfected, Matthew moved on to the paint and body work.

One particularly impressive feature of the ‘37 is that it is 100% completely steel. “Nothing fiberglass, anywhere on the car” according to Matthew and that is remarkable. I can only imagine the amount of

time it must have taken to perfect each panel before the absolutely flawless black finish was laid over it. He prides himself on the fact that the car is “All Ford, All steel” and hence the name PUREBRED. I’ve known Matthew for over 20 years and I’ve seen quite a few works of art rolling out of his garage but this car is by far my favorite. It was immediately the star of the show at the Michael Travers Memorial Car Show on April 22nd and received “Best of Show” honors. Plus it was actually driven to the show!

Matthew said the car is a blast to drive and he plans on taking it to a ton of car shows and cruise nights this year and that is one thing that really garnishes my respect for him, HE DRIVES HIS CARS!! Despite all of his cars being limited production pieces and high-end restorations, he always brings them out for people to see and enjoy. That’s what this hobby is all about and that is the type of Car Guy we like to see in Motorhead!! Cars are made to be driven not hidden!! Get out there and drive Motorheads!!!

CARS WITH CHARACTER

ENDS: JUST SOME RANDOM FACTS

• When stuck in highway traffic, is it better to stay in your lane, or try to “beat” traffic by switching lanes? According to the Discovery Channel show, Myth Busters, changing lanes can result in a faster commute, but not by much. Lane shifting shortened travel time by about two minutes over a two-hour drive.

• Catalytic converter thefts have skyrocketed, causing nationwide shortages. Thieves slide under cars and use a reciprocating saw to remove them. Why? Catalytic converters contain rare metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, precious metals that fetch a high price on the black market.

It is widely known that the look of a car can be protected by trademark law. If Hyundai were to manufacture a new line of cars modeled after a Testarossa, Ferrari would sue the company for trademark infringement. But what if the car was one of a kind appearing in a work of fiction? Courts have found that the look of a specific vehicle in a film or movie can be so distinct and recognizable that it should be considered a character in the story and receive copyright protection.

Copyright law prohibits the for-profit use of key fictional characters unless the copyright owner consents to that use. For example, a movie studio could be in fringing on a copyright if it produced a movie in which the main character was a young wizard named Harry Potter. That character is distinct, recognizable and – most importantly – worth a lot of money for

• Justice for the Corvair: You may remember that, in 1965, Consumer Protection advocate, Ralph Nader, published Unsafe at Any Speed, which highlighted the dangers of Chevrolet’s firstgeneration Corvair. Nader claimed the Corvair was unacceptably dangerous because its swing-axle rear suspension caused loss of control and roll-overs. Public reaction to this book

Warner Brothers, the company that owns the Harry Potter franchise. This begs the question, could a vehicle used in a work of fiction be so distinct and important to the drama that it should be considered a copyrightable character in that work? In the 2011 lawsuit DC Comics v. Mark Towle, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals considered that question with regard to the iconic Batmobile.

was instrumental in the creation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal agency that now regulates automobile manufacturing safety. What many do not know is that a 1972 safety commission report conducted by Texas A&M University along with NHTSA concluded that the Corvair had no “abnormal potential for loss of control or rollover” when compared to contemporary vehicles of its type. Unfortunately, by

that time, declining sales due to bad publicity had forced Chevrolet to end Corvair production.

• The most affordable production car sold in the United States in 2023 is the Nissan Versa S model, starting at $16,755. In 2022, a rare 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe sold at auction for a record $143 million, enough to purchase 8,534 Nissan Versas (before tax).

• Prior to the 1920s, city

DC Comics (the owner of the Batman copyrights) sued custom car builder, Mark Towle, claiming he was using the company’s intellectual property without consent. Towle is well known in the custom car world. He even has a Netflix series, Car Masters, about Gotham Garage, his custom car company. In the early days of Gotham Garage, Towle built and sold replicas of two versions of the Batmobile (the one appearing in the Batman show and the 1989 Batman movie starring Michael Keaton). DC Comics sued Towle, claiming damages for infringement of its trademark and infringement of its copyright, arguing that the Batmobile was so unique and such an integral part of the Batman franchise that it should be considered a character in the show.

The Towle lawsuit wasn’t the first time a company had tried to get copyright protection for a car. The owner of the Gone In Sixty Seconds movie franchise had made a similar claim, arguing that the car driven by Nicolas Cage in the 2000 movie (a Shelby Mustang GT500 nicknamed “Eleanor”) should be treated as a distinct character worthy of copyright protection. The court disagreed.

streets were open to pedestrians, pushcart vendors, horse-drawn vehicles, streetcars, and playing children. As motorized vehicle traffic increased, so did accidents, injuries, and deaths. In 1923, residents of Cincinnati proposed that all cars be equipped with governors limiting them to 25 miles per hour. Automotive groups and manufacturers responded to this threat with coordinated efforts to enact laws that recognized that the primary use of roads was for motor vehicles, not pedestrians. These efforts included media campaigns that sought to publicly shame pedestrians who crossed streets illegally, labeling them as “jaywalkers” or “jays,” a slang term meaning “rube” or “hick.”

• The longest interstate highway is Route I-90, stretching 3,085.3 miles between Boston and Seattle, starting at Logan International Airport and ending at Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks.

In contrast, the court in the Towle suit ruled that copyright law does protect the Batmobile. The Batmobile, it said, was depicted “as being swift, cunning, strong and elusive,” and was portrayed as a “superhero” and “Batman’s sidekick, if not an extension of Batman’s own persona.” The court clarified that not all fictional cars should be protected by copyright, only those that are “especially distinctive” and display “consistent, widely identifiable traits.” The ruling recognized that cars in movies and television shows are not always just props; they can be essential characters to the story.

With that ruling in mind, MOTORHEAD would like to pitch a new heist movie. It stars the DeLorean from Back to the Future, and the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro from Transformers

Nicolas Cage plays a mechanic.

Seriously. Just hear us out. . . .

• William Phelps Eno is often referred to as “the Father of Traffic Regulation.” In 1867, after horse-drawn carriages caused a traffic jam that made him late for the opera, Eno was motivated to find his true calling in life - writing traffic regulations. Up until that time, no one had spent much effort attempting to organize how streets were used. Eno wrote many traffic regulations and his innovations included traffic lights, posted speed limits, traffic roundabouts and “rules of the road.” As motorcars became prevalent, many of Eno’s innovations were adopted around the world and are still in use today. Though he continued to promote traffic safety until his death in 1945, Eno never bothered to learn how to drive a car.

As we close out this exciting double header weekend, we are now four races into the 2023 season and you would never know that these guys had nearly six months off. With a total of 12 races scheduled, we may see the crown change hands multiple times before the Grand Finale on October 7th. But up to this point, here’s how it has played out as we are a third of the way into the season… April 29th

BUILT NOT BOUGHT

and it was just going to Mota Racing shop for a tune up and possible carb swap. Dave had raced before but at 10.90, all he wanted to do was go a little faster. Then he when to Derek’s shop and saw Derek’s X275 car and that was it for Dave. They started talking and then the journey started. Derek Mota saw it in a totally different way. If you know Derek, you know exactly what I mean. (Next month’s article will be on Derek’s ride.) Derek owns Mota Racing and Fabrication in Danvers, MA on Route 1.

Dave has a very, very busy family life and does not have a lot of spare time. He made sure he was involved in the building of his own car. Dave and Derek hit this car HARD. I mean they thrashed on this car every night to get it done for the first PDRA race. Late late that went deep into the 3:00 am type of nights. They did not know what class they wanted to race in, they did know it would be in a NT class or grudge car, but then they picked a class and just when for it. PDRA Super Street was their choice. This winter they realized they better pick it up a notch if they were going to be in it for the championship. April 26 was the first race at Virginia Motorsports Park. They were behind the eight ball. The Heart of the GTO! Dave was set on the

GTO having a Pontiac power train. This GTO was going to have that and nothing else but that. Dave picked a team that had all the right people. The motor is a BES Racing Engine, it is a 470 cubic Pontiac motor. Nothing but the best parts were put into this motor.

Derek, being a Harts turbo guy, made sure one of these bad boys was going to work on the GTO. Derek works very well with Jamie Miller, who is one of the best in the business. He knows how to make a car work. Jamie played a huge role in this part of the GTO.

28| Motorhead Magazine - June 2023 CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Tuning this monster was his specialty - the FUEL tech FT600 fuel injection, the Fuel Tech 720 lb./hr. injectors, Fuel Tech Spark, and CDI race coils - this was going to be a monster. Jamie also helped Derek set up the suspension. In my opinion, I consider Jamie Miller to be the Austin Coil of the 21st century. This chassis was heavily modified. The trans is an Extreme Automatics built two speed turbo 400 transmission that is hooked up to a Neil Chance racing converter. The suspension

is a thing of the past, Menscer Motorsports shocks are used in 4 corners, they help control the Tin Solder Race Cars built 9-inch rear end. Mota Racing handled most of the fabrication, but Jeff Sacfide did the roll cage. Derek Mota plumbed the hot side exhaust to supply the Hearts 88 MM turbocharger. Bootleg Dyno Tuning did some pulls of the GTO and got the base line set up. Just over 2000 HP, the rest was going to be tweeked by Jamie Miller, you know, the RED Hat guy! The amazing paint job on the GTO was done by Marcus Signorelli of Resto Rods and Customs. The body is straight as an arrow if you’re wondering. Just so you know, this MINT 1968 GTO got best engineered car at the first

PDRA event. They also won the first event that they went to in Virginia. Shortly after they won the first race, a 100 lb. rule was put into effect.

I personally watched this team in one day, get this car set up and getting in the high

4 second range in the 1/8 mile. ONE DAY! I can’t tell you how many people spend years trying to get their car set up. I have seen this car go from daily driver to PDRA Super Street championship contender. Dave Mancini’s 1968 Pontiac will be in it for the long haul. This car is so clean and just looks incredible. Hard work, late nights, sweat and endless hours of labor have paid off big time. Super Street class has been put on notice, this is going to be the car you want to keep an eye on. The bar has been set, let’s see what happens next race. Build not Bought!

It really works!

REACH OUR TARGETED READERSHIP

Di erent magazines appeal to di erent audiences. For example, teenage girls may prefer to read Teen Vogue while teenage boys may read ESPN the Magazine. People who work from home may be more interested in magazines that cover topics such as entrepreneurship or work-life balance while working professionals may rely on business and economics magazines. Through magazine advertisements, you can nd the right magazine for the right audience and place your ads strategically. Motorhead Magazine is a local car magazine designed for the passionate automobile lovers.

REALITY VS VIRTUAL REALITY

Many people spend a lot of time online trying to chronicle their daily lives on Twitter or post the latest sel e to Instagram. However, since most readers only scan a website for 15 seconds before moving on, the real experience of actually reading a magazine surpasses the virtual one and can create a mind share – a share in the mind of the target customers.

A LONGER SHELF LIFE THAN DIGITAL

Digital advertisements come and go. Companies must keep paying to ensure their ads are well-placed on websites and repeated every day. Motorhead Magazine, on the other hand, is published monthly. We have a longer “shelf life,” as they sit in waiting rooms, magazine racks, car shops, and supermarkets.

BRAND RECOGNITION AND CREDIBILITY

Many magazines are well-respected among their target audience, so, when you advertise in such a reputable magazine, people can become familiar with your company and a level of trust is elevated. This recognition is then reinforced when they meet you in person, either at your place of business or at a local car show or charity event. This not only builds brand recognition but, in time, brand loyalty.

Keith Damico’s Passion for ‘69 Camaro’s

40| Motorhead Magazine - June 2023 CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
Photos by Lou Cicerone

Keith Damico has owned a few 1969 Camaro’s throughout his lifetime and there was one particular favorite he owned in 1992. This was Keith’s first really nice show condition Camaro that started him on his lifelong love and passion for the 1969 Camaro’s.

Keith almost lost his life during a fire while he was working under a car in a garage. It was being stored for the winter, so he cancelled the insurance on that car. Well, it was a total loss, so he lost that car and his investment at just 22 years old. It was ultimately quite a disappointment. Keith and

his dad loved going to car shows together. His dad owned a 1965 Ford Mustang, 2+2 fast back when he was growing up. He had to sell it when Keith came along. Attending area car shows really brought back some memories for him.

In addition to that, Keith was making his own memories with his dad every time they went to these car shows. When Keith lost his first really nice car, he had to tell him that he had not given up yet on owning his dream car. Soon after the fire, approximately in 1993, Keith stopped by an area speed shop called, “The Enthusiast”, located in Johnston, RI. Russ, the owner, had heard about what had happened with the fire and told him, “If you are looking for another 1969 Camaro, I have a customer who is selling one.” Keith grabbed the information and he and his dad went to go look at it. Keith really wanted that car. His dad laughed and said, “How are you going to pay for it? Because I am not buying it for you.” So, the wheels in Keith’s head started to spin. He

back because he wanted to talk with him. After a discussion about a payment plan, they reached an agreement.

Approximately one year later, he handed Keith the keys and the Camaro was his. Keith removed the 350 motor. Keith couldn’t get that 427 big block Chevy motor installed quick enough. It ran great! Keith started going back to area car shows with his dad and best friend. He had a 1977 Corvette at the time. They made it through the season and then the motor blew. Keith put the car in a self-made garage where the car sat for quite some time. Around this point, Keith had some life challenges and ended up moving to Arizona.

One day, his dad informed him that an individual kept coming to his house inquiring if Keith would be interested in selling the Camaro. He then sold the car to Ron Manchester, of Glocester, RI. Ron was a local

Keith installed double driveshaft loops, Willwood disc brakes all the way around, and also fabricated a dash insert to house the Holley 12.3 pro dash touch screen with a custom dash pad made to complete the dashboard.

Custom sail panels were fabricated out of aluminum and a custom front spoiler was also made out of gauge steel. He changed all wiring ends to Deusch connections on all wiring harnesses throughout the whole car. Keith finally finished off the

racing motor builder and a former NHRA drag racer. Ron started his drag racing career behind the wheel of a 1969 Camaro. When Keith returned to RI., he started thinking about his old Camaro. He really wanted another one. Keith set out to see if Ron still had the car. Keith was surprised that he still had the car in his possession. They reached a deal, and he once again owned his previous car in 2014.

Keith installed a Detroit Speed mini tub kit into the car. He built a 565 with Nat Chevatone and installed an RPM 6-speed. RPM manufactures high performance transmissions. Cryotreat1-4 gears and cryotreated shafts were installed allowing the transmission the capability of handling 1200 hp & 1200 ft pounds of torque. The 565 big block Chevy ended up having a faulty Rod. The motor went back to Nat around the time Covid began and Keith figured they would go

Around that time, everybody used to go cruising to your local spot in Rhode Island - Reservoir Ave. But, in Massachusetts, it was Plymouth Ave., Fall

After high school, I would Cruise the Ave. in the late ‘90s driving a 1994 Pontiac Trans Am. Let me tell you, the Ave. was wild then. There were guys

from all over coming to race; they would even bring cars on trailers to set up races. All along the Avenue, places would be peppered with cars. Cars were either parked at the Dunkin’ Donuts, the McDonald’s or the Stop & Shop parking lot on Friday and Saturday nights. It was fun! It was great! It

was probably one of the best times of my life!

So, in memory of the “Plymouth Ave. days,” we, at Motorhead, did a nighttime Plymouth Ave. run in a 1986 Pontiac Trans Am for a cruise down Plymouth Avenue to show you what it felt like when you would hit the lights; when you would park at the Stop & Shop in cars of this era in time.

Even though the Plymouth Ave. days are gone, they are not forgotten. Hopefully someday, they will come back again. Thank you for reading this from all the people at Motorhead Magazine.

A Mark in Time

Easily taking us back to the 80s

ERIC HUBERT

Leaving a Mark in the world, this 3Q color code Light Crystal Blue Clear Coat Metallic Lincoln is unbelievably clean that was special ordered with leather and suede seats. Under the hood is the original 5.O HO 302 V8, transmission is the factory AOD four speed automatic with overdrive, and the rear axle is the original 8.8 3.27 traction lock. Now this fantastic Lincoln Mark VII with LSC trim resides in Burrillville Rhode Island with the Hubert family. Eric, the Lincoln’s owner grew up in the city of Woonsocket Rhode Island. “Now I have three grown children…Amanda age of 18, and Hailey age of 20, and Andrew age of 21.”

Eric’s first car was a 1986 Buick LeSabre at the age of 16 years old. “I also remember in 1986 when my brother-inlaw had purchased a brand new 1986 Pontiac Trans Am. As a 6 year old, I was astonished by the flip up headlights and the rare digital dash. It made me feel like Kitt from Knight Rider. That later led to me purchasing that vehicle from him.” Right out of school, Eric had taken a career path in the Automotive industry at a GM dealership.

Scrolling through Marketplace, Eric came across this beautiful car for sale. “Now I wasn’t looking to purchase anything on Marketplace as it’s just a hobby I do in my spare time.” However, Eric couldn’t resist, he had to go take a look at it. The Lincoln was owned by an older gentleman who

had the vehicle since it was brand new. “It was in an unbelievable condition for being a 34-year-old New England car!” The mileage of the car was a little over one hundred thousand miles and no rust to be found anywhere. The underneath of

After purchasing the vehicle, Eric put on a set of 2007 Mustang GT wheels on (while restoring the original wheels which are now back on the Lincoln). “Seamless Customs” in Leicester Massachusetts completely reupholstered the interior. Then the engine compartment along with the whole car was detailed.

A nice weather driver, the Lincoln is on the roads maybe 3 to 4 times a month in Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons. “While driving the car, you feel like it’s 1989. To me the most unique part about this car is its rarity and how clean it is for a New England vehicle. In the time I’ve owned this car, I can count on one hand how many other Mark VIIs I’ve seen.” Eric has the original sales brochure from 1989. In addition, he retains the original Lincoln gold key sold with the vehicle, brand new and uncut. “I also have from the original owner the Lincoln cross pen, given to Lincoln purchasers when purchasing a new Lincoln.”

During the car show season, Eric attends as many car shows as possible. The Mark VII received first place in its class at the annual Tasca Ford Mustang event in Cranston Rhode Island of 2022. This Lincoln will be highlighted in this year’s Carlisle Ford Nationals event as a featured car in Fords history!!

Chris Martin’s 1994 SVT F150 Restoration Struck by Lightning

Bringing Back the Nostalgia Old Colony High School Car Show

Allow me to take you to a little parking area in the woods for some nostalgia. You see, few people ask me what it was like before social media, when phones were still attached to walls? What was it like back then to have a car show? What was it like before the internet told you what you were doing?

When I, a transplant, growing up in Massachu setts, I went to a tech school. Old Colony to be exact. It’s a little tech school in the back woods of Rochester and the only thing fun about it for me

Every year, around this time, my good buddy Chris Martin prepares himself for his annual journey to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the Ford Nationals. Along with his dad, Car Show legend George Martin, Chris usually spends most of the weekend in the show field next to his immaculate 1990 Notchback Mustang. But for 2023, he has a new ride, a 1994 SVT Lightning, that will help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT). As a lifelong Ford enthusiast Chris had to jump at the opportunity to grab this Lightning from the previous owner who was

selling it as a project. Having always wanted one of these trucks, he accepted the challenge. The first thing he did once he got it home to his garage was remove the bed and the cab and address the weathered, but very solid chassis. After the chassis was brought up to his standards Chris replaced every single brake line and fuel line, as well as the suspension bushings and body mounts. With a very solid foundation to

was the long commutes back to my home. Being a tech school automotive was a prominent part of the eco system. While others were purchasing the current “K” car or grocery getter to get to school, some of us were thinking bigger or, should I say, more muscle oriented. An automotive department assured a constant influx of Novas and Impalas or anything cheap the shop could get to tear down, rebuild and then drive around in gaudy open exhaust fashion. The dy-

namic was compelling as now even those that didn’t turn wrenches felt they needed to keep up with the competition. Where most schools had jocks, we had big blocks. Your school, they locked nerds in traffic, we picked up cars and turned them 90 degrees in the parking lot.

After a long day of school or summer job we would head out to the Avenue or to Plymouth Waterfront and, like seals meeting on a beach, we would sit among the rocks making revving noises to assert dominance while comparing vehicles, staging races, and even sharing a peace pipe among rival organizations. Of the hundreds of thousands of times I attended these

events, I don’t ever remember a time it was broken up by police. It was indeed a different time.

I had thought I left that time far behind, as the song goes. When I received a flyer from a

same vintage, which he was able to use for the engine. From the factory these trucks boasted 240hp and 340-lbs.ft. of torque thanks to a 351 Windsor engine with GT-40 cylinder heads and

friend that said that the Old Colony car show was happening four years ago, I felt curious about attending. I must be honest in saying I wasn’t the brightest and best the school had to offer. By many people’s standards - I was trouble. My separation was tumultuous to say the least. Was there any bad blood? In the same vein I’m not one to care about it if there was.

Next obvious step was to ask for the Facebook event page… which there wasn’t one. When I asked for online banter, a public discussion? A curious void. All I had was this flyer and an email.

Now four years later it hasn’t changed. It’s still a one-page flyer with simple instructions. Show up or be left out. They’ve added some crafting tents and the attendance has changed, but this show to me has been a success since day one. A commentary on how if the internet crashed tomorrow that nothing would change. Word of mouth would still get the word out and there would still be simple car guys interested in small shows and sharing their passion. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Avenue and Plymouth Waterfront may now have police presence, the simple parking lot meets forced out by complaining Karens have been forced to become street take-overs, but the heart of the true car guy remains the same (and that counts you car gals as well). Put something together and we’ll show up in our Sunday best. And in the nostalgia bears a ray of hope, an example for the future. This show isn’t run by adults, it’s run by our youth. Our future. Here they are interested in the same cars I was interested in

ago. They aren’t bothered by trends. The cops on sight were just as much enthusiasts as we are. There to enjoy the cars. For a moment it took me back and realized that what we wanted back then hasn’t changed and probably never will. We want a moment in time to remember. A moment that we can make ours forever. A moment we can hand down year after year. Remember that time at Old Colony? Back when things were simpler? Yea, let’s have more of that.

ing off their parking lot, I scoffed. Yet still my curiosity got the better of me. Like a school reunion where you just have to know what happened to the jock while the school reject shows off his supercar. I gotta go!

What I found was oddly satisfying. Was it a huge show? No, but in that small back lot they had brought out some amazing cars, a veritable smorgasbord, and filled it up. Full-on funny car dragsters that had driven to the event parked next to T models. Muscle cars flowed throughout while big trucks adorned with American flags lined the back wall with motorcycles on their flanks. A few imports broke up the momentum and on the back wall a line of supercars parked in all their glory. The smell of 93 octane and lead additive blended with the aroma of a food truck making hastily prepared burgers and sausages wafted throughout the show. A shrewd wooden token given out to anyone that attended with a sticker placed on top to commemorate your attendance was all you got to remember you were there.

I was really taken aback by this event. Sure there were touches that reminded me we’re still in 2023, but in other areas it really hadn’t changed in the void that was my time attending the school. This was the parking lot where I parked my car while attending here and now in my spot sat a car with over 700 horsepower. A ’57 Chevy parked next to a supercharged Camaro is how I would’ve remembered things as I decided what I was going to do with my future. Funny enough I even wrote for the school paper, so here I am literally doing exactly what I would be doing all this time later. Oh, and yes, I was still causing problems… It is what it is.

It really reminded me why so many loved that time. It was simple. Here’s the flyer, put it on your wall and don’t miss it because there’s no way of asking any questions prior. Just show up and have fun. That’s exactly what we did. We met some people, complimented their cars, snapped some pics, jotted some notes and maybe ate food that would give you heartburn for three days to go with the free tanning session. Mission accomplished.

SURVIVOR SURPRISE

1955 Dodge C-3-C8 3/4 Ton V8 Truck

While visiting her son, Sam, in Colorado, (owns and operates a metal fabrication business called Flyin’ Iron Fabrication near Denver), Liz and her husband Bruce stumbled upon the truck of her dreams in the tiny town of Idledale, Colorado. It wasn’t for sale. It was just sitting there surrounded by weeds. It was gorgeous. It was a Dodge. Liz is a Dodge girl.

Being an amateur photographer and lover of rusty relics, Liz asked Bruce to turn around. This happened about a hundred times on this scenic trip. Colorado is a beautiful state. She wanted to take a snap photo of the truck. It looked like it had been sitting for a long time. Liz always had a vision of utilizing such a truck in their yard as a waterfall project or filling it with flowers. The truck didn’t have a “for sale” sign on it and nobody was home. They continued on their vacation. Liz could not get the truck off her mind. She was telling everyone about the beautiful truck for the entire time they were out west. They were on their way up to Steamboat Springs. Liz asked Bruce if they could go see the truck one more time. His response was “What for? Can’t you find a truck in New England?” Liz emphatically stated; “Not one with THIS gorgeous patina!” So, back they went to Idledale to visit the truck one more time. Bruce wouldn’t even get out of the car. “You are crazy,” he said, as she walked up to the front door of the owner’s home. Liz knocked. Nobody came to the door. She think’s back and has to agree with him about her being crazy. She was crazy in love with that truck! Liz left a note on the front door with their phone number stating that she would like to talk about purchasing the truck.

They returned home to Connecticut. She couldn’t get that truck out of her mind. Liz didn’t receive a call from the truck’s owner. Two weeks passed by, and she was still obsessing about the truck she saw in Colorado. Liz had to find out who owned the truck and if they would part with it.

Through the power of Facebook, Liz joined a group for Idledale and found the truck’s owner. She told him her plans and he said he intended to fix it up one day and put in a 351 Cleveland with a 4-speed he had in his possession. He decided that he probably would never get to complete the project he had in mind. So, they reached a deal. Liz’ dream truck was going to be hers. They assumed that the truck didn’t have an engine or a transmission the way the owner was talking about the upgrades. Her son picked it up for them and stored it at his business until they could make arrangements to have the truck transported to Connecticut. Liz can recall the words her son said after towing it back to his place; “Do you know what you bought?! This truck is pretty complete. All of the fluids are still in it. I think it’s

gonna crank over”. Bruce jokes “No, I have no clue what she bought, because I never got out of the car! All I saw was a pretty turquoise and brown truck with a rotted-out bed.” To their surprise, the truck was complete and in decent shape despite sitting for twenty years. During the winter of 2021, Bruce and a few friends, worked on getting it road-worthy and brought it back to life. The list to get it running

and oil pump and added an auxiliary oil filter. They used Frank’s Auto Top in Providence for the interior. Bruce put all new wood in the bed. Beyond those cosmetic items, the only thing that is not original on the truck is the rear bumper. They installed an ahooga horn. It generates lots of waves from folks out in their yards when they take the truck out for a joyride. They have been enjoying driving the truck everywhere and getting lots of smiles per gallon. They also use the truck for an event prop for their store. Liz and Bruce own the popular Brown and Hopkins Country Store in Chepachet, RI. Their truck also appears in the Ancients and Horribles Parade on July 4th in Chepachet, RI that takes place annually. Their classic truck is rented as a prop for professional portrait photography and rustic weddings. It helps to pay for all of those smiles per gallon. Bruce just loves driving their old truck and talking to all the old guys who grew up with trucks just like their truck. A ten-minute grocery store run now takes two hours due to the conversations initiated about the truck.

Liz and Bruce are on Instagram at @ourpatinatruck and #idlenomore55 which is a nod to where they found the truck in Idledale, CO. Bruce and Liz absolutely love their classic 1955 Dodge truck. When perusing through your stash of goods on top of your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful har m to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moistur give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power lines and all necessar e and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Par etailer

Etch watches as four men enter the diner through the front door. He looks at the woman sitting next to him, “Friends of yours?” She looks in the same direction and takes a sip of her co ee. “No. But they think that they are friends of mine.” Two of the men look over at Etch and the woman sitting next to him and proceed to walk over in their direction. “This can’t be good,” said, Etch, under his breath. He stands up and faces down the two men as they both step up to the table. “What are you doing here?” Etch stands rm as the two men question why the woman sitting next to him is in the diner. “The last time I checked it was a free country pal!” Etch stares down the two men and clutches his hands into sts. “This has nothing to do with you sir,” said one of the men standing in front of him. The man reaches into his left jacket pocket and then shows Etch a badge. “What is she doing with

you anyway? Do you know her? Are you associated with her? Or, did she just sit down next to you at this table? Etch looks down at the woman and back up at the police o cer. “She just sat down next to me at this table. Why?” The police o cer puts away his badge and looks directly into Etch’s eyes. “She robs unsuspecting men she meets at diners and restaurants asking for help with her car behind eateries and then steals their cars and trucks.”

Etch looks back at the woman. Then back at the police o cer. “But, I know her from high school. It took awhile to recognize her but we were classmates in school for a couple of years.” The cops look at each other and turn to walk away. “She just got out of jail two days ago and we wanted to make sure that she wasn’t up to her old tricks. Whatever you do; don’t trust her. She will steal your heart, your money and then your car or truck.” The

two police o cers join the other two men at a table at the other end of the diner. Possibly, two more police o cers. Etch looks over at his table companion. “So, you planned on robbing me and steal my car by luring me out back pretending that you had car problems?” The woman looks back at Etch and takes a sip of her co ee. “I watched you drive into the parking lot and pull up behind the diner. There is no way I can drive that muscle car you parked behind the diner. That beast is way too powerful for the likes of me to be able to drive anywhere. By the way; isn’t that car illegal to drive on streets, roads and highways nowadays?”
