DIRT DRAGS: RIDE’N DIRTY TOM McCARTHY On Sunday, April 30, 2017, the Quaboag Riders Motorcycle Cub, of Monson, Mass, played host to a 4x4 vertical drag racing event, up their VERY steep hill. The hill, which is both famous and infamous is over 360 feet to the top and is in some places, close to 45 degrees (or more) of angle.

The last step – jump – just before the crest is well known as “The Grave Yard.” Many a machine has had to be towed off this spot; hence the name.

The club, known also as the QRMC is best known for hosting motorcycle hill climbs, which it has done since 1944, when the club was established.

The Quaboag Riders Motorcycle Cub own significant acreage and can accommodate many different kinds of events. That they have embraced drag racing in the dirt just gives New England racers one more quality playground for motor sports events, like the one they hosted on Sunday, April, 30, 2017.

There are seven classes to race in and the racers tow in through the gates around 7:30 to 8 AM to set up their respective pit areas as they would at any race event. Sign-up is in the spacious club house on the top floor, while on the ground level, the smell of fresh hot coffee and bacon from the kitchen will get you every time. The Women’s Auxiliary at the QRMC run the kitchen and no one goes hungry. During really big events, food trucks line the food court with a carnival like atmosphere 8| Motorhead Magazine - June 2017

taking center stage. Bumpy houses for the kiddies and face painting comes alive during major events.

At the 4x4 event on April 30th, the 4x4 dirt drag racing machines lined up and with mud on their mind, they were ready for side by side racing up the Monson Monster.

Due to the speeds these machines can attain, the race course is limited to 180 feet of actual timed acceleration.

A traditional NHRA old style Christmas tree is used for staging and start.

First car, truck, rail, (whatever)to the finish line wins each heat.

Any fuel, Super Unlimited, forced induction – any combination. This is drag racing in primal, simple fashion. If one were to add a flag starter to this, it would be 1940-something, all over again, but up a very steep hill. While the loose rocks and mud

The Jeep class attracts the weekend warriors with their Rubicons and Comanche style Jeeps that can climb the hill rather well. Occasionally bone stock street type pick-up trucks will enter and they can get up the hill if they have the right off-road tires for it. Sometimes they get stuck and they will be towed from the race course, but more often than not, they make it.

The modified machines are what the spectators come to see and they do not disappoint. Big block motors, sometimes with nitrous, sometimes not, will put 30 foot high rooster tails in the air and scream up the hill, side-by-side. It gets a bit sporty some times as the machines gain speed and start surfing a bit in the mud. But the drivers keep it under control and they make sure everyone goes home safe and gets to work on Monday.

The first half of the day’s drag racing is devoted to drag racing side-byside in traditional drag racing fashion. This changes half way through the race day program. Once they day’s drag racing classes are settled, the Monson Monster hill becomes the challenge.

This often times brings the spectators to their feet as the big machines really let it all hang out screaming up the hill. They do it in the dirt and they do it for fun.

ED DAY CAR SHOW

The Annual Charity Extravaganza

By ED YESSAIAN Back in May of 2006, at the first ever ED DAY event, I was overjoyed at the turnout of a whopping 12 cars. All 12 vehicles multi-tasked that day competing in both the racing and car show sides of the event and there were a total of 8 coveted ED DAY awards. For 2017 the count for the drag racers tied an all-time record of 58 with 8 Junior Dragsters, and another 51 vehicles in the car show. This was truly one of the biggest and best events I can remember, highlighted by the debut of my new son, Motorhead writer Xander

Anthony. The event also featured another very special guest as two year old Abby Lesniewski proudly handed out the trophies. Abby executed the entire awards ceremony perfectly, almost like it was rehearsed. All those involved were completely blown away by her charming personality and of course her undeniable cuteness. Rumor has it Abby has now signed a multi-year deal with ED DAY productions after her stellar performance.

ALL WHEELS EXTRAVAGANZA

By JIM WEICHERDING A lot of you reading this article right now are probably big fans of classic auto shows and cruise nights across the area held from the start of April thru the end of October each and every year and that is understandable. I’m an enthusiast of these venues and I attend quite a few of them on a regular basis every Cruisin Season.

In fact, I will be attending more than one hundred classic auto shows and cruise nights this season and I am sure most of you will be attending your fair share of these venues as well. Did it ever cross your mind just how difficult and complicated it is to find a host location and actually coordinated a classic auto show or cruise night for all of us to attend and enjoy firsthand? We just roll into these venues and probably never give it one thought about how hard it must have been to put that classic auto show together enabling us to showcase our classic cars, trucks and motorcycles for everyone to see up close and personal. I will use the upcoming All Wheels Extravaganza Event as an example of what it takes to put together and promote a single venue like this one.

It takes a lot of hard work and dedication not only on the day of the event but during the entire lead up until that event day takes place. DJ Car Guy for an example, had to create a personalized flier to help promote the event and announce the event at all of his other area classic auto shows and cruise nights. Not just that event either. He has to remember every single upcoming event happening over the next five months.

I can hardly remember what magazine I am writing articles like this for and that list just increased by four more automotive publications up and down the east coast last week. DJ Car Guy will also be playing all of your favorite oldies songs at the All Wheels Extravaganza. I attend a lot of his classic auto shows and cruise nights and he does play some old time favorites. He also welcomes requests and does that very well. He is a likable family man with a passion for his wife, family and the job that he does DJ’ing classic auto shows and cruise nights.

The other important behind the scenes person is also a very good friend of mine, George Arakelian, owner and one-man-army at A Custom Car Stereo located at 1174 Atwood Avenue, Johnston, Rhode Island. When it comes to customer care and service with any of the stereo system installs, this is the guy to call, or stop by and see him for all of your auto stereo needs. His shop also provides many other automotive services so don’t hesitate to ask about this shops complete service

I will also be signing autographs for all the kids on my Cartoon Character Coloring Posters throughout the day. Me, George and DJ Car Guy will be attending this Meeting Street School Fundraiser Event and donating our time and resources to help with this very important charitable cause. The classic muscle car GTO is traveling at a high rate of speed and the bullets never hit their target. Etch looks into his driver side mirror: “They want to crush my car and lock me up forever? They better do a lot more than that to catch me.”

Etch begins to feel the stress anyone else would feel under the same circumstances dealing with non-stop hard driving and police officers shooting at you because you only want to drive your classic muscle car on the roadways in America. He tries to find a safe place to unwind and relax for a little while beyond the reach of the law. The GTO heads towards an offramp that leads to a backroad away from the open highway, flashing lights, sirens and flying bullets. Etch slows the classic muscle car down to cruisin’ speed and takes a left onto a dark roadway without street lights, houses, businesses and vehicles. The area is completely void of man made structures

and lights. All Etch can see is the moonlight shining above the thick tree tops on both sides of the roadway and what his GTO headlights show ahead of him through his windshield.

He reaches down and turns on his car stereo and keeps it low enough to hear, but not loud enough to annoy him, while he attempts to calm himself down and sit back into his driver seat and just cruise. An approaching set of headlights is now unsettling and starting to make Etch nervous. “What now?”

The approaching vehicle is just a caravan with teenagers inside traveling well above the speed limit. Etch flashes his headlights to get the driver to slow down knowing very well that behind him are a lot of police vehicles searching high and low for his classic GTO. As the caravan nears his muscle car, Etch sees the driver throw an empty beer bottle at his vehicle and watches as it soars over the hood of his GTO.

Etch hammers the brakes hard and swerves to the side of the back road with a cloud of sand swirling in the night air around him. The craravan pulls a U-Turn and starts to drive back towards the OUTLAW GTO stopped on the side of the road. Etch doesn’t know what to make of the situation but he does know that there were at least 5 teenagers packed into that caravan. He also knows that if he decides to take off that there is no way in hell that a caravan would be able to keep up with a built GTO with nearly 800 horsepower tucked under the hood. Etch sits and watches in his rear view mirror as the caravan slowly drives towards his stopped GTO.

amazing piece of machinery. Obviously the options are endless and being the son of Performance Dyno’s Mad Scientist Josh Pearl, I have access to a never ending array of ground pounding muscle machines.

And of all the cars I’ve seen in my six months on this earth, there is one sinister super Stang that just stands out as one of my favorite Performance Dyno customers, that’s Mike Virgn’s 2013 Shelby GT500 with roughly 780rwhp.

Those of you that know my Dad, know that Josh Pearl must be in disbelief right now!! How could the son of a diehard Camaro guy be so infatuated by, of all things, a MUSTANG? Admittedly, even the great Josh Pearl is impressed with Mike’s Shelby, and rightly so. This car packs an unbelievable punch and also handles like a world class super car, resulting from only a handful of modifications, which is pretty impressive.

The majority of the increases in power come from the ported TVS blower that sits atop the factory 5.8L powerplant. A ported elbow and 67mm VMP throttle body extend towards a JLT intake, helping to improve on the breathing chores.

Exhaling duties find their way through stock manifolds with a cat-less X-pipe, and Borla Atak mufflers. The melody that this system sings is like nothing you’ve ever heard and gets even more furious as Mike’s foot gets closer to the floor, and he stomps furiously on a pedal connected to a McLeod RXT clutch. With the help of a Gen 2 MGW shifter, Mike rips the pavement, spinning 4.10 gears and twirling the 20 inch RE Replica wheels. As turns approach the sinister Shelby, an Eibach Pro kit makes short work of them, assisted by a Whiteline panhard bar and upgraded dampers at all four corners. Nitto NT555R’s make sure Mike is glued to the road, making sure he’s nothing but confident in his conquering.

I asked Mike, are you even remotely concerned about some of the new factory offerings that are trying to claim bragging rights on the street and his reply was quite comical. Mike simply stated, “there will always be faster cars out there, but the Shelby has quite a bit more in her, with a couple extra bolt-ons and an undated tune at Performance Dyno, I’m not going to be scared of Demons for a very long time”.

Let’s hope not Mike because at Fall Dyno Day we all wanna see you top the charts again!

It was a exciting and ultra busy weekend at OPA Racing’s “Lake Race” at Lake Of The Ozarks, aka LOTO! LOTO is a high performance boat Mecca. Visit one of the waterfront bars or restaurants and you’ll see 2 million dollar high speed pleasure boats lined up like Honda Civics at the mall. It is home to some of the best race teams in the world. The Marine Technology Superboat Unlimited Teams of CMS Racing and Wake Effects both hail from this wonderful cradle of Mid Western hospitality as does Speed Racer/ Marine concepts all of whom are among my competitors.

No rest for the weary! Racing is fun however it is also a lot of work. I go to meetings, press conferences and interviews so my sponsors are happy and then most importantly engage with our fans which is an activity I truly love. We had thousands of people come through the pits and autograph the ALEX AND ANI Superboat this weekend. It was a thrill! LOTO is a wonderful destination and I look forward to returning.

On Saturday after a rain delay racing commenced!

With five boats abreast we got a little crowded at the start but but all went well. There were no collisions and clearly we had the power to win.

Bobby Cazzani, Herb Stotler, Levi Santana and

Brady Bragg have outdone themselves with these motors and this boat. The water here is flat calm so a race consists of 24 two mile endurace drag races if you will on an oval course. The abuse our equipment takes is significant. Our strategy was to hang 100 yds back, stay out of traffic and stay in clean water.

We were of the opinion that as the competitors expired we could mount a challenge in the last couple of laps. We saw a top speed of 172 on our GPS however a bigger propeller may have been more appropriate. We had hit the rev limiters!

On lap three we had a mishap, overzealous throttling combined with aggressive driving caused us to spin and miss the marker. To avoid a penalty we had to do a 360 and renegotiate the turn. No problem, hammer down, we have a way to go. As luck would have it attrition reared it’s ugly head!

The competition failed one by one. We timed the pass to win so it occurred right before the finish line to add some excitement! We sailed past the American Ethanol Catamaran about two hundred feet before the checkered flag! After the race everyone said we saw you coming, it was close, it was a nail biter!

We went into their house and took it!

It’s humbling to be back in the winner’s circle after a long drought. As a former champion and speed record holder the last few seasons have been frustrating. I’m so grateful for my fans and my friends here in Rhode Island who always boost my high spirits. I’m naturally high energy and you guys help keep me steam rolling!

This victory took performance, strategy, endurance and as always luck!

Our next event will be the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix on 7/2. This event will be televised and live streamed, please root for me “THE ALEX AND ANI BOAT”!!

On a different note as luck would have it we

secured a small sponsorship for the Point Pleasant Beach, NJ Grand Prix from Jersey Mike’s Subs! The better news is Jersey Mike’s wants to discuss a relationship moving forward!

As some of you may be aware the Point Pleasant Beach race was red flagged due to an accident that resulted in a fatality. Fellow racer and friend, David Raabe will be missed. # 539, I hope there’s offshore racing in heaven.

By KAYLA CONTI About twenty seven years ago David Ducharme bought his 1938 Ford 4 Door Deluxe Sedan from a friend of his, Fred Robinson. It didn’t always look so white and shiny. In fact, when Dave bought the car it was in what he calls “antique mode”. In other words, a full restoration was a complete necessity in order to get this car back on the road and up to Dave’s standards.

That’s just what Dave did. When he wasn’t remodeling houses throughout the state of Rhode Island, he spent his down time in his garage at home working weeknights and weekends to get his ’38 exactly where he wanted it to be. The 350 small block Chevy was rebuilt by Creb Engineering, located in Pascoag, RI. Aside from the engine rebuild and the reupholstered seats, Dave performed all the work on his ’38 Ford. He did all the necessary body work and painted the car in the driveway of his home. He spent two years restoring the vehicle.

Later on down the road, in 2005, Dave decided to sell his ’38 Ford to a local Rhode Island man. As soon as he saw all the hard work and long hours of labor he put into the car drive away, the regret set

in. He immediately wanted the car back. Unfortunately there was nothing he could do at that point.

The car was no longer his.

Continued from previous page stumble upon an ad for a white 1938 Ford 4 Door Deluxe Sedan in the Providence Journal. She told Dave his ’38 Ford was for sale once again. Without any time to spare, after a short phone call, Dave got his baby back.

Dave is one of three guys who ran the famous “Field of Dreams” car show on Route 100 in Chepatchet, Rhode Island. He did this for twelve years from the late eighties to the early nineties. On a hot summer day or even a mild day in the middle of winter, Dave and Donna put the Ford to use, driving it as much as possible throughout the entire year. Dave’s garage is filled with trophies won from “Best in show” to “Best interior” from car shows and cruise nights all over New England.

It’s safe to say Dave’s 1938 Ford won’t be up for sale any time soon.

By LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO For those who didn’t think things were possible, there were a lot proven wrong that were second guessing in the bike and car community on May 28th. There was nothing short of a tremendous amount of support for a fallen friend of the Warwick, Rhode Island community named Bobby Brierly. Due to a recent motorcycle accident, this gentleman is physically impaired and has been hospitalized throughout the month of May while friends and family have scrambled and pulled off an astounding miracle for this individual.

Not only have there been fundraising notifications throughout the ocean state, but a team of rock stars pulled through and hosted an event to raise money for Bobby’s recovery and funds while he’s down. Within weeks Eddy Florio, Joey Hughes, Jeff Lage, Claudia, and Ray Brooks of Picasso’s Pizza went seeking donations of tables

worth of raffle items, ordered extra supplies, and crossed their fingers on word of mouth and social media hoping that their event would take off.

When the day came and the clock ticked noon, they were ready and immediately overwhelmed. Crowds of people came to show their support and most not even knowing Bobby but staged there to support the cause anyway.

Through ticket sales and raffle items, they were able to raise over five thousand dollars which greatly helped in the healing process of their friend and his family. This group would like to thank the supporters that came to the event and were able to throw back complimentary food and beverages. Through their efforts, Bobby is healing knowing that miracles can and do happen and will hopefully be back on two wheels next season. By LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO The visit to the New York International Auto Show was a thrilling success upon the tour of the Trans Am Worldwide and Kevin Morgan Designs 2017 Pontiac Trans Am. Not only did the creators of the original fifth generation pla�orm kick it up a notch by introducing some newly found horsepower

Upon speaking with Tom Sawyer who is in control of the CAD designs and production of the vehicles at the facility, he quickly explained the perspective behind the transition. The basic idea was to come up with something retro that would stand out, so simply keeping the styling comparisons of the 1970’s with a trendier and more modern look. They then wanted to recreate the originality of the 455 (7.4 liter Super Duty), however a li�le more power would be into play because this wasn’t going to be just like any other ordinary make. The engine embraces a Magnuson TVS2300 Supercharger

into the game to a�empt to take down the Dodge Demon and rumored Chevrolet Exorcist, but they also did it with mind blowing style. From the sleeker body lines of the sixth generation base down to the reintroduction of the newest version of the 455 engine, they certainly set the wow factor for general GM enthusiasts and Pontiac supporters alike.

: THE 1000HP TRANS AM backing 14 pounds of boost which is ultimately only half a PSI less than the new Demon and these in synch produce an astounding 1,000 horsepower and 1,046 ft-lbs of torque.

A bit of weight reduction occurs considering the car is invested with carbon fiber panels including the shaker hood, fascias, and fenders.

The vehicle is also hand painted and displays the 455 logo as well as the Firebird symbol. This all is embroidered and proudly set into select interior pieces for a final customized finish to match the retro décor. The traditional overall feel of the vehicle is embraced with added on t-tops for those who need that “wind in the hair” reminder of the original Trans Am that pulled at America’s heart strings. While this introductory car is a beautiful approach to an older predecessor that is shortly going into full production, there will only be 55 available of this edition ever.

This may be because Trans Am Worldwide focuses on providing a very unique customer basis so that their clients will be administered

Most of you reading this article read the headline and thoughts of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, steaks, corn on the cob and cold beer probably entered your mind. Not this guy. Summer Grillin’ takes on a whole new meaning for a lot of automotive enthusiasts across America. It’s all about the classic cars and trucks this time of year and I love their Grills! I don’t care if it is a Pontiac, Chevy, Mopar, Ford or any other make classic ride manufactured prior to early 70’s, you gotta love those grills.

American Made Muscle Cars, Classic Trucks or those awesome 30’s, 40’s and 50’s Hot Rods are loaded with different types of grills. Tall grills, long grills, skinny grills, big bulky grills, chrome grills and blacked out grills can be seen driving down highways, back roads, side streets, grassy fields and black top parking lots all across New England and across the USA all Cruisin Season and they sure do catch your eyes. I practically wrench my neck trying to get a full view of these classics and their grills whenever I am driving across New England or parts due south in my travels.

I do a lot of driving up and down the east coast during the course of the year to attend classic auto shows, drag racing and circle track racing

venues and community events. I see a lot of grills and I see a lot of beautiful vehicles attached to them along the way. So this summer, when you do fire up the grill in your yard for those cheese burgers, hot dogs, steaks and spare ribs, remember that there quite a few grills near you that are cruisin down a roadway and it has nothing to do with the family BBQ. It has to do with automotive enthusiasts heading to, or returning from, an area classic auto show, or cruise night somewhere close by in their cherished rides, sitting behind the first thing that people see heading towards them on a bright and sunny summer day, or early evening in this region and nationwide: American Made Automotive Grills. A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid.

When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. GPS units are essential equipment on todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boats. Units range from inexpensive handhelds to full blown chart plotters. Many GPS units have built in mapping or accept digital maps to help the user navigate.

Boaters can choose from a simple handheld unit or choose a fixed mount unit. Both types have advantages and disadvantages. Many boaters keep a hand held unit for safety even if they also use a fixed unit. One nice feature for many handhelds is a special cradle with a power cable for use when under way.

Configuring your GPS is important in order to navigate accurately. Among the parameters to be chosen are map datum, navigational units, data output and the unitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s course format. Each of these elements should be understood and set before using the unit to navigate.

Map datum refers to the original process that the paper chart was designed with. In order to compare a GPS position to a paper chart, both the GPS unit and the chart must use the same datum.

WGS84 is the most common datum in use among American boaters. NAD83, the other common datum is virtually the same. International charts use a variety of datums so mariners are advised to always check navigational charts and configure the GPS unit accordingly.

Navigational units can usually be set to miles per hour, or knots. Since water is measured in nautical miles, it is preferred to set GPS units of measure to nautical miles and knots. It is also relevant to remember that your paper chart typically displays units in nautical miles. A degree of latitude is 60 nautical miles, and a minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile.

Knots are important as 1 knot = 1 nautical mile.

Another setting to choose is course up or North up.

This will make the plotter display the chart or grid always with the course oriented in front or always in a North up orientation.

CHARITY CHALLENGE 2017 NEW ENGLAND’S ONLY 100% CHARITY RACING EVENT ED YESSAIAN As the 12th Annual ED DAY Charity Challenge rapidly approached, there was serious concern about whether or not Mother Nature was going to cooperate. But as with every year, I held my head high and cheerfully let people know that “It never rains on ED DAY”.
