ARE SUVs SUVs GETTING EXCITING?

@ Executive Automotive Society If you’ve ever been to a car show you may have seen an out of place vehicle. It was very confused about what it wanted to be. Was it
are small ones and big ones, but most see an SUV as a Rav4 or Honda CRV. Usually having less space than the common truck, but having more than a standard car trunk. It’s usually gas guzzling and most of the times considered excessive. The perfect soccer mom vehicle. In short, that means popular. It’s true, SUVs may not oust the venerable Ford F150 at the top of the block, but you’ll be hard pressed not to find them littering multiple spots on the top 10 list. So when the big automakers realized they were being forced to move to electric they had but one choice: Mothball anything that didn’t sell well. That could put you in quite the conundrum. Automakers need their exciting vehicles to sell, but now everything they had was utility oriented. So what to do? Easy, do what they always do and cheat on their competitor’s homework.
a muscle car or a truck? Who knows, but it changed how we saw things. It was the El Camino. The El Camino made just under 30,000 vehicles in its first run from 1959 to 1960 and it was a very cool car. When it returned for a 1964 to 1987 it continued to sell well all the way up to 1986. There would be various attempts at its revival up to 2010, but its time had passed and budget cuts put the final nail in the coffin.
In 2003 Porsche was sitting pretty on some of the sexiest cars on the planet. So it seemed a little odd that they would roll out a performance SUV, but that’s exactly what they did. So how did it do? Sales increase of 47%. You read that right, the new SUV accounted for close to half of sales. This also accounted for pushing more of their other models up the chart as well. Still other automakers were slow to adopt this new thinking. Then 2009 hit and many ideas, including Pontiac’s El Camino idea, were left on the budget floor. Still the concept was growing. Now fast forward to 2018. The world’s governments are requiring carbon neutral cars, which means electrics. Automakers are set to spend
So why are we bringing up the El Camino? Simply put, because it still has followers today. It’s undeniably a muscle car and bridges that gap between powerful cars and utility bred trucks. Go to any car show and you’re likely to both see and be interested in the El Camino. So can the SUV do the same? The first SUV is credited as being the 1984 Jeep Cherokee XJ, although there are many prior that could wear the name. SUVs were compared as a step up from the station wagon, a feel the El Camino knows all too well, but the truth is the SUV is more of a truck than a car. You’ll also be hard pressed to find an SUV pulling up to any car shows with a flock of attention. Even when BMW introduced its X5 in 1999 it wasn’t with a lot of fanfare. SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, but what it really should say is truck with permanent cap, which is how automakers treated it. There
billions creating technology that they have 5 years to create in a 6 year development cycle. They were already behind the 8-ball before they hit the ground. The time they were putting off was now a freight train barreling down the tracks. This meant giant lay-offs and restructuring. Soon Chevy and Chrysler were doing the same. Continued Next Page

With the writing on the wall some of the most expensive brands in the world were suddenly making SUVs, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini are all set to build an SUV. So what were their results? 30 to 50% increase with record sales. Aston Martin saw a 224% increase in sales! The world had spoken and they wanted cool SUVs. The more things went well, the more they continued to rise. The Land Rover and Range Rover lines continue to see success, the Jeeps continued to build power. Then the Wrangler got some competition most recently with the Ford Bronco that saw pre-orders that couldn’t keep up with demand as excited buyers took delivery all over social media, calling itself the modern SUV. Few would argue. The first to try their hand at exciting electric was Ford, oddly using an old name with a new face. The Ford Mustang Mach-E all-electric. It came under some criticism as it didn’t really feel like a Mustang. It sold okay for its unveiling netting 60% of its sales to competitive shopping, meaning they went from an electric to the Mach-E. HILLSIDE RACEWAY Dick Holland’s Tribute to his Legendary Brother ED YESSAIAN Looking back on my 47-year “childhood”, I had quite a few hobbies and interests along the way. But if I had to pick one era of my life that was hands down the most enjoyable it would be the late 80’s to early 90’s when I traveled all over New England racing Radio Controlled cars. Racing always has and always will be in my blood and the bug has already bitten my 5-yearold son Xander, who many Motorhead readers know quite well. Recently, Xander was invited to Hillside Raceway in Epping, NH by his very good friend, Travis Keller who is one of the founding fathers of the track along with Dick Holland, a legend in the RC world. By John Conti Back in the ‘70s, I ran a two-bay shop with five guys, if you can believe it; a basement for transmissions and engines, one guy in each bay, and me outside year-round. The neighbors in the Park Avenue/Grace Street area of Cranston were great people and I got to know all of them in the eleven years I was there. One college bound, clean cut young guy stood out amongst the people who would walk by and simply say hi or good morning, whose name was Paul McElroy. Occasionally he would ask a car question, but more often he would have a positive comment with a big grin. When he went off to college I lost contact with him, except for the occasional times he would come back to visit his parents, Ester and “Mac”, along with his brother Jimmy, who was always riding his 18 lb. titanium racing bike. When I moved my shop to Warwick Avenue in ‘82, I Continued on Page 36

lost some contact with the neighbors that did not become customers from the old location, however, I did often see Paul’s parents for service until their last days. Three years ago, I got a call from a 1970 Corvette owner who wanted some engine modifications; his name was Paul McElroy, who had explained his discomfort with his aviation gas fed 454 big block. Now the previous memories of earlier years with Paul’s positive comments and automotive inquiries all proved out in my mind. When the car arrived, I was very impressed with the detail of the paint, body fit (gaps), and straightness of the glass body. The compression ratio of this engine was extremely too high for the street, running on 93 octane pump gas. A number of tests were made along with borescope checks of the pistons to indicate any possible detonation witness marks that could possibly require a full engine disassembly to lower the compression and re-ring the engine if the cylinder walls were also good. der walls were decent, so we elected to make a custom timing curve in the distributor and “jet” the carburetor accordingly, with some power traded off to avoid the airport location gas fill inconvenience/

Paul also indicated he possibly would be driving this car to Texas for a visit to an old friend. The additional work done on the car after the engine modifications that were made included: new T10 Borg Warner transmission and clutch assembly and driveshaft U-joints. The brake system corrections included four calipers and new lines at the rear. Exhaust modifications included custom header-to-connecting pipe fabricated cone transitions and new rear mufflers with mandrel inlet bends, to allow this big block to breathe on the street. Rear suspension trailing arm and lower strut rod bushings were replaced with a new 7-leaf spring.
In numerous, recent conversations, Paul mentioned his love for 2-seater sports cars as a young man of various varieties (M.G’s, Triumphs, Jags, Sunbeam Tiger, and early C-1 Vettes) when one of his friend’s father bought a ‘61 Vette and took him for a ride at the tender age of 9. This was when it clenched the deal in Paul’s mind that he would own a Corvette someday. It later led to a ‘68 that needed too much work (in 1988), but he did most of it himself, while teaching full time in the Massachusetts school system as a woodworking instructor. He sold that car in 1994 and acquired this ‘70 red flash in 2007.
All these upgrades did prove out and he’s been driving the car comfortably, with occasional confrontations on the highway, that he seems to have a hunger for (think of the “McElroy Grin” I had mentioned in ear-

Dick Salvas Rides & Car Shows

His name is Dick Salvas. He resides in Putnam, Connecticut. He is also a great friend. If you don’t know his name then you might just be living in a cave somewhere because this guy is well known across the region for his classic Chevy’s and his extremely popular seasonal car shows.
His 1956 Chevy was a complete frame-off restoration completed in 1990 and this classic Chevy is gorgeous. Also in 1990, Dick began his first classic car show at Reubens Deli located on Providence Street in the town of Putnam, Connecticut. The first season attracted between twenty-five and thirty show vehicles and a modest spectator turnout but back then it was all about getting together and having fun with your friends and family members. A car show is a great venue to get together and have fun. A few years later, in 1993, Dick founded the classic car club called “Tri-State Cruisers”. He was also the person who started the popular Main Street Cruise located in Putnam, taking place every August and occupies the entire town in that same year.

MILITARY MUSTANG Tate and Kathy Jennings 1968 Convertible ED YESSAIAN Tate Jennings has always been a fan of Muscle Cars, especially Ford Mustangs. He often reminisces about how many he has built over the years, with each one having a special place in his heart. But having served in the Navy for over 32 years, he was frequently on the move and could not fully enjoy his cars or dedicate to them the time he wanted to. Tate recently retired from an impressive lifelong career in the military and settled in Pryor, Oklahoma where he says he spends most of his days working on his trio of Mustangs. Having extensive knowledge and experience from previous builds, he completed the majority of the work in just one year because he was preparing for a transfer and did not want to move the car in pieces. Tate wanted this car to be as fast as it was flashy so the first order of business was to contact Blueprint engines for a solid foundation to build his dreams upon. The Blueprint 302 that was delivered featured beefed-up internals and aluminum heads that resulted in a ground pounding 390 horsepower and 350 ft/lbs of torque. The C4 transmission was treated to a laundry list of upgrades and the Ford 9” rear end was freshened up for its share of the chores. If Tate was going to go in a straight line only, this set-up was enough to get the job done, however he knew he’d be carving corners with the top down and the tunes cranking so he went front to back with a complete TCI suspension upgrade. Mustang II rack and pinion steering tightened up the task of controlling the car, and a front disk brake upgrade helped bring it to a screeching halt when needed. Torque Thrust II wheels wrapped in Yokohama rubber complete the package and really stand out against the Indi Blue Metallic paint that was sourced from a Mini Cooper and laid down by Ramm Auto Body, with Wimbledon White stripes finishing the look that Tate was going for. Amongst his collection, the 1968 convertible just looks right. It is definitely an incredible machine, but my question for Tate was how do you pick which one you’re going to drive when you have so many beautiful options. 2022) was one of five 1967 Cats at the show! Thanks to Chuck Fletcher of Atascadero and Tim Baal of Orcutt for their support in getting the May Family’s 3rd car to the event. Georgina May’s Lime Gold 1969 Mustang and Rob May’s Light Aqua 1969 Cougar (1st in the Mercury Cougar class) were both published in previous Motorhead issues. In addition to the Mercury Cougars noted earlier, several others were at the event. This show of Cat force did not go unnoticed as the Santa Maria Times utilized a photo of a row of Cougars as their main front-page picture that week. Five 1967 Cougars in attendance was a number to be commended with Dave Greenlee’s project ’67 Cat from Visalia picking up a long-distance award. Tim Baal’s 325K mileage ‘67 started the Cougar row with George Woehlkle’s ’67 as the other endpiece. Suze Cody brought out her 1968 Cougar and raffled prizes for CCMC fund raising. The letter “M” was lucky for the import class. A three wheeled German made Messerschmitt car won the Import Class. Central California Mercury Club CCMC ended the 2021 car show season with an award for Best Participating Club at the ALL FORD

‘I got a second chance’ Exeter man loves life with 1969 GMC truck after health scare

news@seacoastonline.com A restored 52-year-old pickup truck from Exeter is making a name for itself in the truck show world. Mike Hammond’s 1969 GMC half-ton, short box step side truck was recently awarded a gold medal by the Pontiac-Oakland Club International. After working on the truck for the past 10 years, Mike was curious how it would stack up against others in the field. He took it to the 49th annual POCI convention at Mohegan Sun from July 11-15 and was thrilled when he earned top marks. He came home with a first-place trophy that is a replica of the Flying Indian hood ornament from a 1935 Pontiac. His truck was in the 1911 to 2021 semi-modified and modified GMC class where each truck is judged on its own using a points system. They start with 400 points and deduct from there. His truck lost points because the horn, back up lights and dome light didn’t work. It earned notice for the care taken with its restoration. He heard one of the judges say “wow” when they looked under the hood. “It stands up pretty good,” the 70-year-old Exeter man said. “I was expecting nothing. There’s people there who have a quarter of a million dollars in their cars, people that trailer their vehicles and don’t drive them.” 50| Motorhead Magazine - April 2022

Mike trailered his truck on this occasion because of the rain, but prefers to drive it. “I built it as a driver, I didn’t want it to be something you drag around on a Continued Next Page
trailer and just show,” he said. “But it came out so good that I’m a little more careful about where I drive it.” Mike’s always been a car fanatic. It wasn’t long after buying his first car, a 1960 Ford Fairlane, that he added a bigger engine to the car. From there, he got a 1969 Rambler, which he drag-raced for years. His garage is currently home to the truck, a rare 2006 six-speed Cadillac CTS and a red 1966 Nova that he still drives in drag races. “I’ve never gone normal with anything I’ve owned; I’ve always owned the odd ball. The Cadillac is the perfect example,” he said. His next project is a 1923 Model T Roadster that belonged to his grandfather. Mike found the 1969 GMC 10 years ago in Northfield, New Hampshire, and began work. “It didn’t look like this when I bought it,” he said. It was blue to start. “Originally, I was just going to have it painted, but the more we did to it, the better it started looking.” He brought in Knox Auto Body, of Shapleigh, Maine, for the paint job and body work. They “nailed it” with his request for a two-tone gray, which isn’t noticeable from a distance. The hood is a different shade than the body. “That was exactly what I wanted,” he said. He then meticulously restored the interior, the wiring, the body, and even relocated the gas tank. He added seats from a 2002 GMC. “So, I basically built a new truck,” he said. He had mostly finished the truck in the fall of 2019, and went to one car and truck show, before everything changed. “In October, I found out I had cancer,” he said. The tumor on his neck was inoperable, which made it necessary to go through 35 rounds of radiation and eight all-day chemotherapy treatments. “It was a tough time, really tough,” he said. He finished his treatments in January 2020, but collapsed during a routine follow-up appointment. I can remember starting to sit down and the next thing I remember is I was in the ICU unit that night,” he said. “What happened is, I actually died.” His wife, Pam, later told him how he went down, and the hospital activated the “code” response to save him. He developed blood clots from the radia-
tion. “For some reason I got a second chance,” he said of the experience. “I got to finish my truck.” Mike had a long road to recovery that included rehab and regaining the strength to stand up and walk. “It changed my perspective on a lot of stuff,” he said. By mid-April 2020, he was able to walk out to his garage, but lacked the stamina to work for long periods. He found a local mobile mechanic who came to his shop and helped him with the truck. “I couldn’t stay out here for more than an hour,” he said. “I’m getting stronger now.” With the truck ready to go, he started going to local car and truck shows with it where it’s been collecting trophies. It earned a People’s Choice award from NH Muscle Cars, a Cruiser of the Week trophy from Candia 1st Stoppe and awards from the Rye Lion’s Club Car Show. It was also featured in an annual car and truck calendar in 2020. This is not how I wanted to end my day at all.” Etch puts his right foot on the gas pedal barely touching the rubber top. The OUTLAW wants to lunge and leap, not crawl. “C’mon baby, stay calm. We don’t want anything to happen to you now do we?” OUTLAW creeps down the dirt and stone road while Etch holds his breath and bites his own tongue. “This is going to take awhile.”
OUTLAW slinks past low hanging tree limbs as well as maneuvering around thick bushes and brush. It’s no easy task for Etch. He is driving a muscle car built for speed. It’s not built for backroad, hillbilly traveling band and “oh, wow! I just saw a grasshopper over there in them thar hills!” mobility. OUTLAW is meant to be driven hard and fast on pavement and cement. Not crawl along dirt and stone roads. Etch eventually reaches his destination. He can barely see his family log cabin on the hill through the thick tree line. He would rather be driving his big Chevy Silverado
