Mijas increase tax collection by 16,5% M.J.R. Tax collection in Mijas increased 16,5% in the first seven months of this year, in comparison with figures from 2011, according to information released from the Department for Economy and Taxes. Up u n t i l t h e 2 0th July, 34.178.410 euros had been collected by the municipal tax department, in comparison taxes collected over the same period last year,

Town Council is improving tax collection management 29.326.877,12 euros, an increase of 4.851.533,14 euros. The increase has been seen in both voluntary and obligatory tax collection. During the voluntary period, a total of 25.264.691,52 euros were

collected, while 8.913.718,74 euros have been collected during the obligatory period, quite an increase from last ye a r ’s f i g u re, wh i c h wa s 3.191.940,42 euros. This increase in tax collection in Mijas is due to measures launched by the Town Council in order improve debt-collection management, fight fraud and offering taxpayers who have problems in complying with their taxes to pay them in installments. In fact, 2.500 taxpayers have benefited from this measure, being able to pay their taxes in installments, with an interest of 5%, through which the Municipal Tax Department is collecting 4.1 million euros. Mario Bravo, Councillor fo r E co n o my a n d Ta xe s , explains that his department is working hard to improve tax collection because “if we comply with our taxes, we will have to pay less money”.

The 11th edition of the Latin Night in Mijas next Saturday M.J.R. Mijas P ueblo will become a Caribbean resort on Saturday, 4th of August with the celebration of the Latin Night, an event organized by the private company Producciones Raices, with the collaboration of the department for tourism of the Mijas Town Hall. The ‘Noche Latina’ – Latin Night – will be held at the Plaza Virgen de la Peña square from 10.30pm onwards. Stands from Latin American countries such as Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia and Cuba will be offering typical drinks and food, such as ‘Mojitos’, ‘Caipirinhas’ and barbecued meat. On stage, Latin City, a group of

12 musicians from Cuba, will be offering the best Latin live music, as well as reggaeton band ‘Class A’, also from Cuba. If you would like to learn the basic steps for Salsa dance, go along as dance lessons will be offered right there by the stage. Santiago Martín, Councillor for Tourism in Mijas, invites all residents and tourists on the coast to come to Mijas Pueblo for this event. Parking will be available at the San Sebastian school centre, areas next to the Tourist Office and Fuente la Seda, as well as the car park building, with a capacity for over 500 vehicles.

Mijas and Civil Guard reach an agreement to improve road services in Mijas The Local Police and the Traffic Civil Guards will coordinate their work in order to improve road control and vigilance services in the municiality of Mijas Mª José Román

The Town Hall of Mijas and the Spanish Traffic Department have signed an agreement of collaboration through which road vigilance and control services will be improved in Mijas, as well as police services offered in case of road accidents and investigations. The agreement was signed last week by the Mayor of Mijas, Angel Nozal, and the chief of the Málaga province traffic department, Trinidad Hernández Méndez, in the presence of Jorge Hernández Mollar, subdelegate of the Spanish Government in Málaga.

the municipality. Through this agreement, their work will be coordinated, according to the law 18/1989 regarding Traffic, Vehicle Circulation and Road Safety. The work of both police forces - Local Police and Civil Guard will be coordinated in order to improve road vigilance and control services in the whole of the municipality, not just during the week, but especially on weekends

and special traffic operations. In the case of road accidents, this agreement also defines the different areas that must be taken care of by Local Police or Civil Guard agents, which will allow them to coordinate their efforts. Angel Nozal, Mayor of Mijas, highlights that the municipality has many kilometres of roads and that coordination is vital in order to offer the best service to citizens.

Town Hall’s edict on façades in Mijas

The Town Hall of Mijas has published information from the document ‘Advances in the identification of urban settlements on plots of land designated as not for building’ in the web page www.mijas.es for citizens to check, under the ‘Urbanismo’ section. This information is also available at the department for Town Planning at the Town Hall building. All citizens, but especially those who own a property built illegally, can access this information and locate properties in maps included in the document, which are available in PDF format. Manuel Navarro, Councillor for Town Planning, would like to remind everyone that citizens have until the 22nd of August to present claims to this document before it is definitely approved in order to start the legalization process for illegal housing in Mijas.

The Mayor of Mijas has issued an edict requesting owners of buildings which façades have not been properly filled with mortar and painted to do so in order to improve the image of Mijas. The Town Council is carrying out projects that aim to improve the image of Mijas, as a tourist municipality, such as doing away with overhead cables and publicity billboards. But there are many unfinished premises and buildings in the municipality which are damaging the image of Mijas. Therefore, the Town Hall is urging owners to comply with this edict, improving the outside of their properties, but also making sure they comply with security requirements which are included in municipal bylaws. If owners do not carry out these works, the Town Hall will take care of them, but charging owners with the expenses, according to municipal town planning laws.

Unpaid ‘No Parking’ signs The Town Hall has send letters to 511 residents who are holders of unpaid ‘No Parking’ signs in Mijas, owning the Town Hall a total of 44.826,82 euros. Instructions have been given to municipal workers to check all ‘No Parking’ signs and remove those who have not been paid. Some residents have also installed fake signs at their properties, 300 of which have been removed in the past few months.
