The Partido Popular gets an absolute majority with 15 councillors in Mijas The PSOE lost one of its strongholds in the Costa del Sol. The PP, with Ángel Nozal at the helm, got 11.026 votes, receiving support from 49.9 per cent of the voters Karen A. McMahon

The PP led by Ángel Nozal won an absolute majority which allows them to govern at the Mijas Town Hall. I n t h e o p p o s i t i o n a re t h e Socialists, the Independent Group and Alternative Mijeña – The Greens. The election results on Sunday May the 22nd saw victory for the People’s Party (PP), which scored a total of 11,206 votes, with ample majority having secured 49. 9% of the ballots. The leader of the political party, Angel Nozal, considered that the votes demonstrated the result of a job “well done not just in the last months, but from more than four years ago”. “My desire now is to merit all those who voted for me”, he concluded. The day after his victory at the polls, Nozal offered a press conference, pleased by the results obtained in the elections. The Partido Popular leader confessed that although they were confident of getting the majority, they were surprised by the wide margin of its success and blamed the loss of votes for the Socialists to the so-called ‘Zapatero effect’. In addition, the future Mayor announced that economic austerity will mark the beginning of his mandate, which will also focus on curbing unemployment and solving issues such as the irregular houses and the business park. Angel Nozal will seek the support of the Junta to respond to these demands, since it’s key projects are the creation of jobs
