G-H/S-C boards approve 2018-19 calendar, set public hearing on budget ❚ by MIKE THORNHILL

A joint session of the GalvaHolstein and Schaller-Crestland school boards was held March 12 in Holstein. A public hearing was held on the 2018-19 school calendar. The irst day of school is proposed for Aug. 23 with a projected end date of May 23, 2019. Graduation will be May 19, 2019. Snow make-up days are March 15, 2019, and March 18, 2019. Christmas break is Dec. 22 through Jan. 2. Students won’t return to classes until Jan. 3. Superintendent Jon Wiebers

said he will be talking with staff members on the possibility of using Jan. 2 as a staff development day. Both boards approved the calendar. No one spoke for or against the calendar during the public hearing. During the discussion on the calendar, Wiebers said he has ruled out going to a four-day school week for the present time. G-H approved April 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Holstein for the public hearing on the proposed 201819 budget. S-C approved April 9 at 5:45 p.m. in Schaller for a (continued on page 2)

The OABCIG School Board approved accessibility, classroom remodeling and HVAC projects March 12 at Odebolt. The board also approved the initial plan for OABCIG director districts and set a public hearing for the 2018-19 budget. Board member Tony Bennett was absent. The board approved the bid and awarded a contract with O’Keefe Elevator to provide an elevator for the Odebolt building accessibility project in the amount of $107,700 on a four to two vote. Voting in favor of the purchase were Crystal Endrulat, Myra Meek, Brad Lundell and Stacy Raasch. Jeff Rasmussen and Stephanie Konradi voted nay. On a ive to one vote, the board approved the bid and awarded a $134,450 contract to Access Elevators and Lift, Inc. to provide platform and incline lifts at the Odebolt building. Voting nay was Rasmussen. Authorization was approved for the school district to publish a request for bids for the mechanical, electrical and general construction trades portion of the accessibility project at the Odebolt building. Rasmussen voted nay. The drawings and bid speci ications for the high school gym HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) re-

placement and upgrade project and authorization for the district to publish a request for bids were approved. Work will begin when classes end; it is to be completed by Aug. 3. OABCIG School District was given authorization to arrange funding for the accessibility, HVAC and model classroom projects with the assistance of Piper Jaffray, utilizing the district’s SAVE fund. Superintendent Terry Kenealy reviewed the revised (third revision) director district map from the Department of Education. “We learned a couple things through this process. When a town such as Odebolt has population that is enough for a district, you can’t split the town. We also learned that we couldn’t cut up the precincts in Ida Grove. This revision meets state requirements and is based on the 2010 census,” said Kenealy. The districts are as follows (note a map of the director districts will be published in the Ida County Courier newspaper when the Iowa Secretary of State approves it): District 1—population of 1,006 and is located west of Faith and Douglas Avenues and includes the City of Battle Creek. District 2—population of 965 and is southwest of Ida

Grove and includes a portion of Ida Grove. District 3—population is 978 and includes most of the City of Ida Grove. District 4—population is 960 and surrounds Ida Grove on the west, north and east. District 5—population is 963 and includes Arthur and the rural area surrounding the City of Odebolt. District 6—population is 1,013 and is the town of Odebolt. Kenealy said, once the Secretary of State approves the map, the board would have to submit a document stating which districts are up for election in 2019 and 2021. A public hearing was set for April 9 at 6 p.m. to approve the iscal year 201819 budget. Board secretary Kathy Leonard reviewed the budget, noting both districts will see a reduction in their tax levies for three years. O-A’s levy rate is $10.57628 compared to $12.03 this year. BC-IG’s rate is $10.99452, down from the current rate of $12.28. Total resources for next year are estimated at $14,261,853. Total expenditures are estimated at $14,803,779. The board approved the agreement with Swanson Insurance Agency and The Hoffman Agency to serve as (continued on page 2)
