Tuesday, September 6: 10 a.m. “Old Files” Program we will be going through the old newspapers to write up the Old Files for the newspaper.

2 p.m. “Downton Abbey: Season 1; Episode 1” - we will be watching an episode of the tv show and drinking tea.

Thursday, September 8 at 10 a.m. we will have a class about BRIDGES a resource to check out free eBooks on your tablet through the library.

Tuesday, September 13: 10 a.m. Coffee and Cookies come join us for coffee, cookies, and conversation.

4 p.m. LEGO Club - this program is for grades K through 6th grade. We will be having LEGO Challenges and building things as teams. Also we will have a snack.

Program will last 45 minutes.

Tuesday, September 27: 2 p.m. Cooking Club - a new club that is starting at the library. We will discuss recipes at the first meeting and when the group meets again they will bring in what they decided to make to share with the rest of the club.

Each meeting will have a theme or what recipes the group will look through.

Wednesday, September 28: 1:30 p.m. Early Dismissal Movie Day - “Zootopia”. This program is for all ages. The program will be over by 3:30 p.m.

Keota holds first flag ceremony

Amie Van Patten, Regional Editor A new tradition has been developed at the Keota Community School district. Mr. Phelps is kicking off the school year with a flag ceremony with members of the Keota VFW present to lead in this ceremony. Hopes

are that the students will continue with this tradition for years to come and that it will serve as a reminder of the great country that we live in. Both the High school and elementary took part in this celebration to kick off a great school year.

Handling LP Emergencies Keota Volunteer Fire Department provided training in Handling LP Emergencies. This class had sixteen

students and five instructors and the class included four hours with the burn prop located in Keota.

Treasurer Fitzgerald Announces Savings of $6 Million for Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System DES MOINES, IA -State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announced today that the state will save about $6 million on the Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System.

This new, state-of-the-art system was expected to cost the state about $50 million. By paying a portion in cash and borrowing the remainder at low interest rates, the state will instead pay about $44 million. “Restructuring the original financing plan and locking in low interest rates contributed to significant savings,” Treasurer Fitzgerald said.

The Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System will equip Iowa’s public safety agencies, first responders, schools and utility workers with a wireless digital communications platform. This platform

provides for a secure and seamless network, connecting state and local agencies from all corners of the state. Construction of the system is underway, with completion expected in 2018.

The State borrowed $32.8 million with an interest rate of 1.64%. The interest cost over the next nine years will be $2.75 million.

In June, Iowa’s overall AAA credit rating was reaffirmed by Standard & Poor’s. “This strong rating allows us to cost-effectively invest in the State’s infrastructure, including the Iowa Interoperable Communication System,” Fitzgerald said. “Our careful approach to financial management, diverse economy and low debt burden continue to pave the way for our future.”

Coming to the EV History Center…

He flew the last mission of World War II On Sunday, September 25, at 2:00 p.m., the EV History Center will be greatly honored to host Captain Jerry Yellin as he tells the story of his life and his outstanding service to our nation during World War II. In 1942, two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Jerry Yellin volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps on his 18th birthday. Jerry graduated from Luke Air Field as a fighter pilot in August of 1943. He spent the remainder of the war flying P-40, P-47, and P-51 combat missions in the Pacific with the 78th Fighter Squadron.

Captain Yellin participated in the first land-based fighter mission over Japan on April 7, 1945. He also has the unique distinction of having flown the final combat mission of World War II on August 14, 1945 – the day the war ended. On that mission, his wingman, Phillip Schlamberg, was the last man killed in combat during WWII. After the war, Jerry went on to write about his experiences during World

BOOSTING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT THIS SCHOOL YEAR A new school year is getting under way. I know local educators will provide great opportunities for our students with the resources they have.

The struggle to provide sufficient, timely funding has put local schools in a bind in recent years. We took a small step in the right direction this year by increasing state support for schools by 2.25 percent. That will give our K-12 schools an additional $145 per student, on average (SF 174).

It’s not nearly enough to make up for many lean years, but I hope it’ll reverse the trend that has dropped Iowa below the national average when it comes to how much we invest in each student.

We’re also focusing special attention on ensuring kids get the strong reading skills they need to succeed in school and life with: · Intensive literacy programs and reading resources (SF 2323). · Training for reading teachers, including how to recognize and teach dyslexic students (SF 2196). · Improved updates for parents on their children’s reading progress (HF

In addition, Iowa is among the first states to implement a new initiative that has our most effective educators working with new teachers and mentoring those looking to improve.

The Teacher Leadership & Compensation System and other targeted investments in STEM, Career Technical Education, reading skills and online learning are great tools. But they need a strong base to build upon, which means adequately funding the day-to-day operations of our schools.

Iowa students have shown they’re eager for the learning opportunities available to them. They lead the nation in high school graduation rates, according to the Iowa Department of Education. More than 90 percent

of Iowa’s Class of 2015 graduated on time, making them the first class in the nation to do so.

I am committed to making Iowa schools No. 1 again, and will continue fighting for the kind of investment our students deserve—one that puts them at a competitive advantage when it comes to education and job opportunities.

IFAA Scholarship Winner Named at Iowa State Fair DES MOINES, IOWA -- Ryan Chalupa of Keota, IA was awarded the $3,000 Alliant Energy - Interstate Power & Light Scholarship by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) during the Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions on Saturday, August 20,2016. Ryan’s parents are Nate and Anne Chalupa.

“IFAA established the Winner’s Circle Scholarship Program in 1990 to provide incentives for college-bound youth seeking post-secondary education in an area of agriculture,” said Harold Hodson of Ankeny, who chairs the IFAA Scholarship Committee. Over $206,750 in scholarships were awarded to 130 youth this year by IFAA. IFAA is a non-profit organization founded in 1988. It is comprised of agricultural enthusiasts dedicated to encouraging 4-H and FFA livestock, poultry and agriculture proj-

ect members to pursue Ag-related careers. IFAA founders recognized that Iowa’s young people are the future of agriculture in Iowa and that an important way to support and retain Iowa’s future Agleaders is to provide financial support to those young people interested in Ag-careers.

IFAA’s primary programs are the Sale of Champions, which is done in conjunction with the annual Iowa State Fair, and the Winner’s Circle Scholarship and Awards program.

Over $7,678,075 has been generated since 1988 for 1,868 Winner’s Circle Scholarships, 1,289 Performance and Carcass Awards, and 392 Sale of Champions livestock exhibitors.

Exploring the origins of Labor Day Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle.

Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective.

Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.

Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City.

Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada.

Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.

Iowa Learning Farms, along with West Fork Crooked Creek Watershed Project and Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District, will host a cover crop and soil health field day 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. The field day near Keota is free, open to the public and includes a complimentary lunch. Cover crops continue to grow in popularity in Iowa due to the many benefits they provide. Such benefits include reduced nitrogen and phosphorus loads entering water bodies, increased soil organic matter and reduced soil erosion. Choosing which species and seeding method to implement can have a significant impact on achieving these benefits and a farmer’s goals. The agenda topics include: · cover crop seeding rates, termination and pest management with Meaghan Anderson, field agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach · local famer Tim Sieren sharing his experience with cover crops · soil health discussion with Brian Hora of Continuum Ag LLC of Washington The field day will be hosted by Vision Ag at 2038 Keokuk-Washington Road, on the east side of Keota. education should be a priority in their local school districts, but only 46% said it actually is a priority.

46 Corporate Partners contributed $559,239 in 2015-2016, a 20% increase in private investments over 2014-2015.

“As co-chair of the STEM Council for the past five years, I’ve seen how the growing emphasis on STEM is transforming learning across the state,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds at the Governor’s press conference this morning. “STEM provides students with knowledge, confidence and problem-solving skills that will help them succeed in their personal and professional lives. STEM provides educators with professional development that redefines the classroom, including working with business partners, so what students learn is more relevant and linked to the real world.”

In addition to these Council-driven gains, evaluators also found more students are taking Advanced Placement (AP) STEM courses, more females are pursuing STEM degrees at Iowa’s 4-year public universities, more high school teachers are earning a STEM endorsement and more

students are aspiring to earn a STEM degree compared to five years ago.

“This annual report provides vital information for the STEM Council to determine areas of strength for the program as well as areas for improvement,” said Kemin Industries President and CEO Dr. Chris Nelson, co-chair of the STEM Council. “The results will shape our programming and develop stronger connections as STEM education efforts continue to move forward in our state.”

This independent evaluation is conducted by an inter-university consortium of Iowa State University’s Research Institute for Studies in Education (RISE), University of Iowa’s Iowa Testing Program and the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Social and Behavioral Research (CSBR). Key findings of this year’s report range from measuring public attitudes and awareness of STEM to interest and achievement among Iowa students. The evaluation is funded in part by the STEM Council and a grant from the National Science Foundation.

STEM Council shows positive results in 2015-2016 Iowa STEM Evaluation Report

The Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship (IDALS) will offer pesticide testing on Friday, September 9 at the Washington County Extension office from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

All tests are available at this site and will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tests are administered by the IDALS. Because it may be necessary to cancel or reschedule a test date or site, it is recommended you confirm the test time and site prior to travel.

IDALS offers testing monthly at the Washington County Extension on the second Friday of each month, April through December, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Students in STEM programs on average score higher in mathematics and science on Iowa Assessments and other metrics CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – This morning, the Iowa Governor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Advisory Council shared the results from its 20152016 independent evaluation that measures the success of the STEM Council’s efforts in advancing STEM education toward economic development across the state.

Highlights of the 306-page Iowa STEM Evaluation Report include: Students who participated in the STEM Scale-Up Program, a program of the STEM Council that brings STEM programs to students around Iowa, scored an average of seven percentage points higher in National Percentile Rank on the Iowa Assessments in mathematics, six percentage points higher in science and four percentage points higher in reading.

The percent of students who said they were very interested in someday working in Iowa was 45% of STEM Scale-Up Program participants compared to 39% of students statewide.

Washington County 4-H’ers Exhibit Livestock at the Iowa State Fair 55 Washington County 4-H youth showed livestock at the Iowa State Fair.

Several champions and reserve champions were earned by Washington county exhibitors in the beef, goat, rabbit, and swine departments.

“Youth gain so many positive skills by exhibiting livestock both at the county and state level,” said Amy Green, Washington County 4-H/youth coordinator.

“The dedication, responsibility, decision-making and leadership they develop can prepare them for careers that use these skills. Those who exhibit at the state level are exposed to many others in the industry and learn more with those contacts as well. We are proud so many youth and families want and can be a part of that experience.”

Keokuk County Board Proceedings KEOKUK COUNTY BOARD PROCEEDINGS AUGUST 22, 2016 The Keokuk County Board of Supervisors met in special session, Monday, August 22, 2016 in the Board Room of the Courthouse.

Hadley and Wood were present; Berg was absent.

Hadley moved, Wood seconded to approve the agenda. All ayes and motion carried.

Wood moved, Hadley seconded to release the redacted version of Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) alleged violation reports submitted to Keokuk County by ISG with blackened out information referring to other counties. All ayes and motion carried. Reports given to the county to date are records attached to the three (3) alleged notices of violation. Initial disclosure reluctance was due to incomplete, inaccurate, unreliable records and disadvantage governmental position in the event of litigation, whereas now reports are complete, accurate and reliable records.

Met with Engineer McGuire regarding Keokuk County Highway Department happenings as follows: Andy attended an innovation and transportation meeting in Des Moines last week regarding futuristic technology and projected impact thereof; notice of a retirement was received and will start the process by posting internally; V5G concrete will be poured and

allowed to cure for 7 days prior to shoulder work, seeding, mulching and stabilizing.

Hadley moved, Wood seconded to approve the minutes of August 15, 2016 as submitted.

All ayes and motion carried.

Wood moved, Hadley seconded approval of amendment to Pictometry Aerial Flight Agreement as submitted. All ayes and motion carried.

The additional cost is $1,628 per year and beneficial to all.

Various board and committee reports were held. Wood attended a HIPAA Committee meeting. Hadley visited the Hedrick Dakota Access Pipeline project sites three (3) times last week.

Discussion of old/new business and public comment was held. Upcoming trainings are as follows: ISAC Fall School is November 30 – December 2, 2016 in Des Moines and Fifth District Legislative meeting is November 18, 2016 in Ottumwa.

On vote and motion the meeting adjourned at 10:00 a.m.

County Atty. Schroeder advised the Supervisors not to make a decision today until further information can be gathered from the Dakota Access Pipeline, Farm Bureau, Iowa Utilities Board and other counties with similar situations. All information and records viewed/discussed during the closed session will remain confidential in the event it may be used for litigation purposes. Once a decision has been rendered, reports will be available for public view.

Cedar Creek Watershed and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Open House, featuring on-farm nitrogen testing kits Interested in knowing the nitrate levels coming out of your tile lines? Mark your calendars to attend the open house hosted by the Cedar Creek Partnership and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach on September 2 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to learn more and receive a free retaiN testing kit that you can use to test the nitrogen in tile water leaving your farm.

The retaiN kits include strips for testing the level of nitrogen in the water and a booklet with information on how nitrogen is lost, instructions on using the strips to test for nitrogen and on farm solutions for retaining nitrogen.

The open house will be held at the Pekin Community School with support from the Pekin FFA Chapter. Stop by the open house for coffee and donuts, see a demonstration on how to use the kits, hear from farmers who have used the kits, and pick up a kit to use on your farm.

“There is no cost to obtain a kit,” said Lanessa Baker, Cedar Creek Watershed Coordinator, “but we hope to engage farmers to being

committed to sample their nitrate levels weekly or biweekly throughout the growing season.” The kits were developed through a partnership of the Conservation Districts of Iowa and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach with funding from the Iowa State Soil Conservation Committee.

The purpose of the project is not to collect data from farmers, but rather offer a simple way to test for nitrate, answer questions on what the numbers mean, and provide resources on managing nitrate levels.

The Pekin Community School is located at 1062 Birch Ave., Packwood, IA. Find us on the east end of the FFA plots, which are located north of the school. We will be at the east end of the plots by the grass strip along the highway.

Fred Newhart found four gigantic teeth while swimming in the Skunk River near the forks. The teeth measured 9 x 5 x 5 inches and weighed close to 5 pounds. The teeth are on

Officers Miller and Stephens capture man in J. O’Brien’s home on West Broadway who is wanted on murder charges in Kansas for killing a sheriff.

August 1926 – 90 years ago Robert Singmaster who fell from a horse and broke his right leg in the spring was only recently really recovered from the accident, broke the same leg at the parental CA Singmaster farm, Maplehurst, this past week.

Work is progressing now on two new Keota buildings – the new Catholic Church and the addition of a schoolhouse. The brickwork on the church is going up rapidly but is hardly above ground level yet.

Railroad is offering low rates to travel to the Iowa State Fair – the new reduction provides for a rate

of one and a fourth cent per mile round trip from any point in the state. Tickets under this fare will be sold August 28, 29, 30, 31 and September 1 and 2.

The Dutch Creek Fair will be once again held at the DW Augustine Farm. There will be a stock show, a pageant race, and so forth and the Valley Ladies will serve dinner and supper.

Four carloads of stock will leave Keota tonight via the Rock Island for the State Fair. Singmasters will send two cars of Percheron Horses, LH McCann of Kinross will send a race horse in another car, and Mike Trier will send his beautiful team of sorrel mules also some of his famous hogs.

The Princess Theater to present – “The Wanderer” – a Paramount Picture this week, the following week the theater will present – “The Road to Mandalay”. Admission is $.20 and $.40.

August 1936 – 80 years ago Second Annual American Legion Homecoming and Fall Festival: Both rides and shows, beauty contest, parade, and speakers. Louis Schmeling Fight Films at the Princess Theater. It was estimated that 5000 people attended.

The work of resurfacing 4.5 miles of Keota roads has begun.

The Town of Keota has taken over Hotel Keota – the council will immediately establish a ladies restroom in it.

The Keota Aviation Club is sponsoring an Air Meet in Keota which is expected to draw thousands of people.

SK tops Pekin 42-20 in Backyard Brawl

Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor The annual rivalry game between Sigourney-Keota and Pekin was an exciting one this season. Friday night in Pekin the football season officially began for both teams, and there was a lot to take away from this game.

SK defeated Pekin 42-20 in anther high scoring affair between the two schools. The final score doesn’t give the game itself justice, but with SK jumping out to a 22-0 lead late in the first half before Pekin was able to get on the board, it isn’t entirely surprising that 22 points ended up being the margin of victory. It is very hard to come back from three scores down, and Pekin almost was able to achieve a great comeback in this rivalry, but SK finished the fourth quarter with excellent fashion, scoring the games final twenty points.

After a scoreless first quarter, which saw both teams fumble twice with SK recovering all four of them, Pekin began the second quarter with an interception which was called down on the one yard line instead of a touchback. This would come back to bite Pekin. After a three and out, Pekin had a short punt that Tristan Sypherd fielded and advanced near the ten-yard line. Carson Crawford had a four-yard TD run a couple plays later. SK missed the XP kick attempt making the score 6-0.

With just over two minutes left, Carson Crawford added another TD run this time from 7 yards out, and with the two-point conversion made it 14-0 SK. After a really good kickoff return by Keaton Baayen of Pekin, it appeared Pekin was going to get on the board, but an interception

by Avery Moore was returned over 60 yards for a TD by SK. Crawford added the two-point conversion making it 22-0 SK. With a little over a minute and a half remaining, Pekin did do a good job of driving down the field capping off their drive with a TD run by Keaton Baayen from 27 yards out. The halftime score was 22-6 in favor of SK. Pekin then cut into the lead more with a one-yard TD pass from Trevor Northup to Levi Long; however, Pekin failed the two-point conversion making the score 22-12 with seven minutes to play in the third quarter.

Then Northup was at it again with a pretty TD pass to Chandler Eckley from 20-yards out. This time Pekin was able to convert the two-point conversion making it a 22-20 game entering the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to SK, more specifically Avery Moore of the Cobras. A majority of the quarter was back and fourth with neither team able to punch anything in. SK broke through when Avery Moore broke off a 33-yard rushing TD. A missed two-point conversion kept it a one-possession game at 28-20.

An Ethan Cooksey punt by Pekin was then fielded by Moore, who in turn took it 55 yards to the house, and after a XP kick from Payton Schauf the score was 35-20. Then Avery Moore closed the door on Pekin when he punched in an 8-yard TD run, and after another Schauf XP the score was 42-20, which was the final tally.

SK by ten yards at 279. Pekin had nearly 80 yards through the air and 200 on the ground. The two teams combined for 14 penalties with eight on SK and six on Pekin. The key to the game was turnovers; SK only had the one, while Pekin gave the ball away four times.

“Well much of our first half struggles are a reflection of turnovers. It’s something we struggled with in the first half and usually the team with the least turnovers has a better chance of winning. That held true Friday night, and I don’t think it will be an ongoing issue. We just have to clean a few things up and learn from it; we will be fine,” Coach Blakely said of his teams turnover problems against SK. Blakely went on to say;“Offensively I thought we did a lot of things well and sometimes it’s difficult to see them

after a tough loss. We obviously have some things to work on, but I was proud of how the kids continued to play hard after being down 22-0. Having kids step up and play positions for injured players puts a lot of pressure on kids sometimes, but we handled it well. Defensively, we put ourselves in some bad positions (field position) and asked a lot of our defense. I was impressed how they continued to battle through those tough situations and keep us in the ball game. I think our execution and continuing to be aggressive on both sides of the ball are areas we need to grow in, and we will as these kids work hard and have big goals for the season.”

He’s real fast, can make tackles and make the big plays..The game comes so naturally to him and so smooth that sometimes I think he’s not going his fastest, but it’s not that he’s letting up it’s just that the game is coming to him.”

Jensen went on to talk about what his team learned in this battle against Pekin, “We saw the determination from this team tonight. The first half things are going well once we got going. Then, the second half we came out and went three-and-out and as the third quarter went on we had a few guys cramping up and had to deal with that, and those guys were dealing with that, getting through it and digging deep to finish out the game strong. It was 22-20 and I think the game can be summed up in one play specifically when we were stopped third and five short of the first down and Carson and the line just drove the pile to get a first down. That determination was great to see, and we learned a lot about these guys and their mental toughness.”

Monica Requena and Trevor Northup were banged up in this game for Pekin. Northup returned after a play and the coaching staff doesn’t have much concern about his injury costing him or the team any time.

Requena was unable to return and is being evaluated this week. With a deep backfield Pekin should be okay moving forward and could allow Requena some rest if needed before District play. Pekin will be at Davis County this upcoming Friday. SK will host Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freemont for their first home game of the season.

Eagles hand out team awards at baseball banquet The Eagles wrapped up the season recognizing the team’s efforts and awards.

The awards were: Team Batting Average Champ: Tyler Verstraete, On Base Percentage: Tyler Verstraete, Slugging Percentage: Tyler Verstraete, Eagle Eye (most walks): Anthony Campbell, Ace: Zach Mousel, Co-Gold Glove: Hunter Wilson, Luke Greiner, Workhorse: Riley Conrad, Most Versatile Player: Jacob Wickenkamp, True Grit (Most innings caught): Luke Greiner, Co-Home Run Slugger: Anthony Campbell, Cole Brenneman, RBI leader: Tyler Verstraete, Base Thief: Jacob Wickenkamp, Most Improved: Tyler Verstraete Co-MVP: Zach Mousel, Tyler Verstraete.

Lastly Keota Baseball would like to thank all the people who helped make this season a great one.

The Keota baseball team had their annual banquet and handed out team awards and honors.

Keota, EV and Tri-Co all participate at EV volleyball tourney Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor Several area schools participated at a early season volleyball tourney held at EV High School. This tournament was moved to EV after it was originally scheduled to take place in Keota, but because of the fire damage to Keota’s gym EV became the tournaments new location.

This early in the season its hard to really gage how good a team is based on their performance in an early season tourney such as this.

EV went 0-2 loosing both of their pool play matches and did not place. Keota lost both of their pool play matches as well to Highland & Mid-Prairie. Coach Brandi Cave of Keota said her team played well against both opponents’, but that they needed to make a few minor changes to help them improve. “ I think once we get used to playing with one another we will be a whole new team.” Said Cave about her team. She went on to say, “ I have two seniors who are stepping up in their leadership roles which helps a whole lot.” Keota didn’t place either.

the tourney. Head coach Sydney Davis was very proud of her team and had plenty of good things to say; “Confidence is a huge thing the team needs to improve on, as well as offense. The girls need to have confidence that they CAN score and they CAN win. When I came into the program, I changed almost everything regarding both offense and defense. The girls have done a great job listening and adjusting to something completely new and for that I am very proud of them. My

team goals and expectations are still set high for the season as well as the girl’s team goals. The team still works hard everyday and I see nothing but improvement and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.”

A tournament like this is a great tool to help build off of no matter how the team performed. All three teams came away with things that they want to work on and improve to be competitive once conference play rolls around.
