Calendar of Events
Troy Kelly, who has been involved with martial arts for 22 years, is opening his martial arts studio in Postville next month. While waiting to formally open his studio, he currently is offering free classes at Lull’s Park. Kelly, who has been running a studio in Clinton, said, “I am anxious to get settled in Postville as my fiance’s family lives here and it is a place we can see ourselves raising our family.” About his history with martial arts, Troy said, “I started martial arts in March of 1994 and in November of 2005 I received a second degree black belt. Two years later in December of 2007 I received a third degree black belt.” He said, “My intense workouts started many years ago when my dad, Greg, a 26-year National Guard veteran gave me two options to work on my coordination, either join a dance studio or practice Tae Kwon Do. Obviously, I chose martial arts. Ever since I started I have loved this sport. You don’t sit on the bench. You are doing something all the time. It is a good sport for everybody, even for kids
who don’t play sports. Also, for anyone who wants to learn selfdefense.” In 2009 Kelly was an adults USSSA Olympic champion, and a certified Olympic coach as he qualified for the 2009 and 2012 Olympic Trials. In 2005,2007 and 2009 he was the Grand Champion of the River City, Clinton, Iowa and in 2006 he was the Dubuque Grand Champion
in sparring. Troy and his sister, Maria competed in Las Vegas at the U. S. Open Tae Kwon Do Tournament, the same tournament which hosts and coaches the USA Tae Kwon Do Olympic team. He was in the army from 20132016 where he was with the First Infantry Division as an Infantryman. Kelly’s program, “Do Your Best Martial Arts” believes that the program can inspire change in the community by helping its members achieve physical well-being,
increase confidence and lead a more disciplined life. Kelly operates his studios under the five tenets of Tae Kwon Do: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. Kelly said, “We develop and encourage students’ personal growth through the martial arts known as Tae Kwon Do and Shotokan Karate. At Do Your Best we strive to train our students to maintain a healthy balance between workout goals and lifestyle changes. As time goes on our classes will happen five days a week to make sure everyone gets the optimum chance to participate.” He went on, “Everyone has their own reason for participation. Some join to learn an art or to exercise. Our mission is make sure each and every person achieves his/her goal so they may be all they can be.” About the programs, he explained, “Tae Kwon Do and Shotokan are not only martial arts but a way of life. Many people join to build self-confidence and to become an honorable person inside and out. We offer plenty of opportunities for everyone from ages five and up.”
