By ROB MAHARRY The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER- At its regular meeting on Monday morning, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved the low bid for the construction of a new annex building in Grundy Center. King Construction of Iowa Falls submitted the low bid at a base price of $1,085,000 and $38 per cubic yard of soil replacement for the 5,119 square foot building, which will house the county’s mental health, general assistance, public health and substance abuse offices along with a DHS officer. It will be constructed on a lot next to the current annex building, which was built in the 1950’s and will be razed and turned into a parking lot upon the completion of the new facility. Mardy Holst of AHTS Architects, who opened the bids and assisted the county in drawing up plans, said that he was happy with the process as the range from high to low among the five complete bids was just 14 percent. Bids were opened at last

YMCA welcomes members to new location By Michaela Kendall The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER – As of July 1, the Grundy Family YMCA is now serving community members at its new location on the east edge of Grundy Center. The building, which is currently occupied by the Grundy County REC, was purchased by the Grundy County Memorial Hospital back in April, and an agreement between the hospital and the Y has allowed the Y to lease the space. Shortly after announcing plans to move to the new location, the Y launched a two-phase remodeling plan to maximize the facility to meet the needs of the community. Phase one consisted of construction of the second entrance,
fitness flooring, and removal of walls to enlarge open spaces for fitness equipment. Some of the equipment in the YMCA Fitness Center at the Grundy Center High School has been moved to the facility and new equipment has also been purchased. New cardiovascular training machines include treadmills, ellipticals, AMT, bicycles and an additional NuStep. Strength equipment including squat racks, dumbbells and a new cable crossover machine will also be available. The project was funded by the YMCA Founder’s Campaign that helped give the YMCA its start in

Terry Oltman
By Michaela Kendall The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER – For the past 28 years, he’s spent each and every Felix Grundy Festival working behind the scenes; whether it was setting up street barricades and directing traffic as a police officer, driving the fire truck in the parade as a member of the fire department, responding to emergencies as an EMT for the ambulance crew, or just helping out with the festival on his days off After finally retiring in January
of this year, Terry Oltman was planning to enjoy his first Felix Grundy Festival off duty. But then he got the call – the call to be the 2016 Felix Grundy Festival Grand Marshal. “My plan was to sit in the shade in my lawn chair and watch the parade from start to finish,” Oltman said. “And I guess that’ll wait another year.” Oltman said he was surprised, but very honored to have been chosen. “I’ve always just done my job
and kept to myself, so this was quite a shock and an honor,” he said. Mindy Greany, Felix Grundy Committee Chair, said that the committee chose Oltman because of his many years of service with not only the festival, but the community in general.Oltman, who was born and raised in Grundy Center, has spent much of his life serving his hometown. In October of 1980, he joined the Grundy Center Police Department as a reserve officer. In November of 1991 he was hired full time,
and he served the department until his retirement in January of 2016; In 1982, he joined the ambulance crew, where he worked on and off until 2013; and in May of 1983, he became a firefighter. Throughout all of this, he found time to work with kids of the community. “The main thing in my time with the local law enforcement and fire department is that I tried to center a lot of my attention on the kids,”

By Michaela Kendall The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER – The newly-formed Grundy Center Historical Society is bringing a bit of history to this year’s Felix Grundy Festival in the form of a pop up museum. The museum, which will be hosted in the vacant store at 609 G Avenue, will be open July 5 – 10 to give visitors an inside look at the history of Grundy Center, and some of the unique people that have called this place home. “Everyone has a story,” said Historical Society member Mary Doak. “Our goal is to share those stories.” The museum will feature videos of Grundy Center residents, such as Jean Evans, sharing stories and memories of Grundy Center. Vintage trophies and uniforms adorn the shelves and walls, and memorabilia from every era can be found within the museum walls. One showcase at the museum is a giant sheet of paper on the wall that visually maps out when particular families first came to Grundy Center. Visitors are
