RAGBRAI is not arriving in Sigourney until July 29, but the county got its sneak peek on Friday when a preride group came through to tour Keokuk County. The group consisting of around 35 to 40 cyclist are touring the exact route RAGBRAI participants will travel late next month, checking road conditions and identifying interesting places for cyclist to check out during the race. Making their way up from Hedrick and then Hayesville, the group first explored Dumont Museum before heading into Sigourney. “We were contacted by Rick Langrebe from the RAGBRAI committee to ask if we could host the riders before they came into town,” Helen Dumont, who owns Dumont Museum with her husband Lyle, said. “It was quite an experience for us and the riders were pretty surprised when they came in and saw everything we had to offer.” The cyclists stopped for a warm lunch and welcoming reception at the Sigourney Fire Department. After being fed, they made their way down Highway 92 to their next rest stop in Washington, visiting Wooden Wheel Vineyard as well before leaving Keokuk County towards Washington. “We get to meet with the towns and hear about the special things they have in mind,” T.J. Juskiewicz, Director of RAGBRAI said. “When we go off the beaten path, we stumble upon new discoveries for our riders, like the Dumont Museum.” Many of the men and women who participated in the

We hadn’t been to Sigourney in years, and we’re excited to come back next month,” Juskiewicz said.

Keota Veteran’s Memorial Dedication Ceremony Amie Van Patten, editor On Sunday, June 12, patrons gathered from near and far to view the Keota Veteran’s Memorial and hear the words of those whose time and dedication had been placed into this project. According to the Veteran’s Memorial facebook page, In August 1944, the community of Keota, Iowa, dedicated a World War II Memorial listing all Keota-area men and women who had served in World War II. By the time the war had ended about a year later, close to 500 names graced the memorial. Among those names were 21 who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. This memorial stood on Broadway in downtown Keota and was said to be one of the finest in the state. Over 2,000 area citizens proudly attended the dedication. Although its wooden construction was of the highest quality, in less than 25 years, deterioration was taking a toll on the memorial. By the end of the 1960’s, the memorial was dismantled and was replaced by a stone monument that was located in Wilson Memorial Park. There are no names on this monument, but it has an inscription that reads, “To the lasting memory of the gallant who gave their full measure of devotion and service to our glorious country.” Several years ago, Larry Gale Sanders started thinking about a new memorial similar to the World War II Memorial that would be more permanent and list all the names of area men and women who served. Many ideas were explored, and those ideas and proposals were presented to some area citizens, veterans, and

More than a thousand people came to Keota Veteran’s Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, June 12. The ceremony was also live streamed and will be available on DVD. organizations. One of the veterans given the proposal was William Hultman, retired English, speech and drama instructor from Keota High School. As a veteran and director of many plays and presentations, Bill had been thinking of some sort of veteran program here in Keota. The proposed Veterans Memorial fell right in line with Bill’s idea of a special program. Plans to produce a veterans’ tribute became reality in November 2013 with the outstanding production of “As One Voice Singing in the Distance.” Local talent was showcased, and all proceeds were used as the first funding for the monument. A Veterans Memorial Committee was formed. Because of their dedication and hard work, 2161 names have been researched and submitted for engraving on a seven-slab black granite monument. The Keota Veterans Memorial site lot was donated by the Delbert Sypherd family. This project has

been totally funded by donations and a grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. With the help of the Keota Veteran Memorial committee and Mike McNurlan, the design was created and placed into reality. The weather was perfect for a celebration, and although it was warm a nice breeze passed through occasionally waving our flag of freedom in the air. Dave Hobscheidt stated it best with his speech, that William Hultman was watching over to make sure that his plan was carried through. The committee will forever remember and be grateful to William Hultman, who passed away January 19, 2014, for his service to our country and for giving this project the “kick start” that it needed. This project could not have been made possible without the generous donation of Powell funeral home for the granite slabs, the Keota Riverboat organization, the Delbert Sypherd family for the

property that holds the memorial and Mike McNurlan, who volunteered several hours towards this project along with many other volunteers along the way. The celebration began with a welcome from Dan Weber, followed by opening prayer led by Rev. Mike Druhl. The Keota VFW Post 4716 did the presenting of the colors and the raising of the American flag. Bianca Cardona, Gracie McHugh, Lauren Imhoff, Olivia Sieren and Jane Edwards sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and the 34th Army National Guard Brass ensemble from Fairfield played the Military Anthems Medley while members of the audience stood as their branch was called upon and the service flag raised. Dave Hobscheidt introduced members of the Keota Veteran’s Memorial Committee and thanked them for their commitment to the project. According to Hobscheidt, if each of the com-

mittee members worked an average of 5 hours a week over the last three years at $7.25 an hour, the cost would be $62,205. However; these committed individuals volunteered, some on site and some behind the scenes. Gidget Utterback led the Keota Elementary Children’s Choir in the singing of “God Bless America” and “God Bless the U.S.A” followed by The Honorable Terry Branstad with the Governor’s Address. Todd Bell, DVM, DACVP LTC, US Army was the keynote speaker. Originally raised in the Keota area, he spoke of the love for the community and the support that has grounded him into who he is today. He spoke of many missions and conversations with other members of his branch and of the dedication of a US Soldier. Larry Sanders and Dave Hobscheidt did the roll call of soldiers whom had died in service while family members placed flowers at the wall of all of those that were killed or went missing during service, followed by the gun Salute and playing of “Taps”. Father Charles Fladung concluded with a Benediction followed by the On Voice Choir directed by Tom Hahn and Accompanied by Katherine Jaeger singing. “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. The 34th National Guard Brass Ensemble ended the ceremony with the music. Many residents stayed after to look at the wall and the names that encompass the granite slabs. Some came to pay respect to family, some friends, but most of all to the American Soldier who has fought for our Freedom.
