Jennifer Stumbo takes over duties as City Administrator Jennifer Stumbo said she is very excited in her new position as City Administrator/Clerk. “Having worked here for three and a half years, I have a feel of what the City Council’s goals are,” says the former city clerk. As of April 12, when her appointment was approved, Stumbo began taking over duties of the previous administrator Donovan Olson. “Donovan set a good example for me. Some things will remain the same while others are different,” she says. Her new position involves administration, operational and financial functions of the city. She will oversee personnel, finances and public relations. Stumbo says the street department is working on some huge projects, and now, being on the financial side, she can take information she has gathered and be of assistance. She is also working with Police Chief Mick Bailey in developing an efficient way of handling community issues - a consistent way for citizens to address issues.

Those who have property concerns and would like the city to investigate, are asked to stop by City Hall and fill out a formal “Complaint Form.”

288 Swedish flags, quite a site to see

At Prairie Lawn Cemetery, one mile east of Boxholm, there will be a Memorial Day weekend display of Swedish flags marking the sites of 288 Swedish immigrants who settled in the Boxholm area. This celebration of our ancestors was conceived and the flags given by JoAnn Eddy, Glenn and Marva Stark and LaVon Ferger, whose families are among those honored. Let’s all gather and honor our veterans this Memorial Day by Sydney Diggs The Iowa: Then and Now class is hosting a Memorial Day service honoring veterans interred in the cemetery as well as present veterans in our community. During this short service, there will be a flag raising ceremony, the recognition of the Civil War veterans, singing of God Bless America, and a short prayer by Pastor Hoyt from the Ogden Community Methodist Church. There will also be refreshments available. It will be held at the Glenwood Cemetery Monday, May 30 starting at 10 a.m. This service is to recognize the veterans in more ways than the flags in the cemetery. The goal is to bring out the community to honor these veterans together and revive the true meaning of Memorial Day. Make sure to come out and support this event and bring a blanket and chair as seating will be unavailable.

“The Boxholm News” newspaper now on microfilm at the Ogden library JENNIFER STUMBO

Christy Thede (lower right) was recently hired as Assistant City Clerk and began her new job Monday, May 23.

The only existing collection of the newspaper published at Boxholm from 1914 to 1934 has recently been microfilmed for the first time and is now available to the public for viewing at the Leonard A. Good Community Library. Although not a complete collection, these approximately 1,200 pages (representing about one third of the total 950 editions) were all there was to work with. The originals are kept in the Boxholm Museum owned by Dave Peterson. Says Peterson, “I spent about 40 years accumulating them and if any-

thing would happen to them, they’d be gone forever. When the Leonard A. Good Library at Ogden volunteered to pay for the microfilming, I thought, now is the time.” A brief history by David Peterson The weekly “Boxholm News” was started Nov. 12, 1914 by Jerome C. Burton who came to Boxholm from Pilot Mound. He was publisher of “The Pilot Mound Monitor,” but his building was destroyed by fire in March of 1941 and rather than rebuild there, he came to Boxholm

and started a new paper. There were four different publishers over the next 20 years, with Howard L. Springer serving the longest. There were 312 subscribers in 1930, with a year’s subscription costing $1.50. Very few of these papers were ever saved. No papers were issued from October 1918 to October 1919 and again from November 1927 to September 1928. The last issue was Dec. 6, 1934, a victim of the hard times in the Great Depression. In January of 1935, the “Ogden Reporter” took over the duty of reporting Boxholm news.
