Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds visits Swiss Valley Plant in Luana to view the progress of expansion project

Last Wednesday, May 4, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds visited Swiss Valley Farms Cheese Factory in Luaua to view the progress of its $21 million dollar expansion project. Others present were Chris Hoeger, Swiss Valley Farms CEO, the Swiss Valley Management Team, Luana Plant Manager Ron Kregel and many more local Luana employees. Barb Collins, Monona mayor was also present. “We are excited to be a part of the northeast Iowa communities and to add value to our members’ milk with the growth and addition to our Luana facility,” said Chris Hoeger, Swiss Valley Farms CEO. “We are investing approximately $21M in our facility between building and equipment. We have a great group of employees there that help turn our members’ milk into wonderful cheese for consumers to enjoy.” With the expansion, the capacity for the plant will increase by six tankers of milk per day of

MAY 19 The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital will be holding their monthly Euchre Marathon for all individuals of the community interested on Thursday, May 19. Men and women are welcome to attend, even if you are not an Auxiliary member. The Euchre marathons are held the third Thursday of each month at the Senior Citizens Room at the Waukon Wellness Center. The Auxiliary’s Euchre Marathons begin at 11:30 a.m. with dinner if you choose. Please call Northland Agency on Aging at 877838-8077 if you wish to eat dinner. Card playing will follow at 12:30 p.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to stay and play cards following the Senior Citizens meal is more than welcome to do so. The cost is $3.00 per person with all proceeds going towards the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Prizes will be awarded. Anyone interested in attending, but preferring to play Bridge is also welcome to join in. It is asked that you come with your table of 4 players, however. additional milk volume. This equates to about 4,000 new dairy cows’ milk production each day. Based on the Iowa State Dairy Association and Iowa State University analysis, this is valued as an annual economic impact to Luana and the surrounding area of

approximately $24,000 per cow. It is further noted, that Swiss Valley already has a market for the new cheese production. The new production is expected to begin this winter, either late 2016 or early 2017 as the construction is completed and all new equipment is installed.

Arbor Day Marquette celebrated Arbor Day with the planting of six shade trees at the playground area of the Timber Ridge Estates Subdivision on Saturday, April 30. The hard-working crew of volunteers made sure that the project was completed before the rain came later in the morning. An Arbor Day observance is one of the four requirements for communities seeking the Tree City USA designation. Luana Fire Department accepts donation

Members of the Luana Fire Department are shown accepting a check in the amount of $4,600 for their building fund. The Luana Community Club, sponsored a Wild Game Feed on April 9th with proceeds being donated to this worthwhile cause.

The Turkey River Recreational Corridor (TRRC) 2016 Summer Safari will begin Memorial Day in Clayton and Fayette counties in Northeast Iowa. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, this summerlong adventure will take area residents and visitors to new and favorite places along the Turkey River valley. Those interested in the Turkey River Safari can register online through the Turkey River Recreational Corridor website at www.turkeyrivercorridor.com. Bulldog students win contest; visits University of Iowa

April Students of the Month JUNE 8 The key to permanent weight loss is to adopt new daily choices that, with consistent repetition, become habits. The Veterans Memorial Hospital dietitians will be offering a new eight-week weight loss class beginning in June that will teach the healthy lifestyle choices needed to lose the weight for good. The Healthy Lifestyles Weight Loss Class is open to anyone in the area communities of any age. The class will be offered on Tuesdays during June and July at 10 a.m. The first class will begin on June 8. MFL MarMac Community Schools announce April Students of the Month 4th grade Carver Blietz-Bentien keeps busy with football, baseball, and basketball. Academically, he enjoys math and reading, especially reading biographical books like “Who Is Derek Jeter” and “Who Was Anne Frank”. In his future, Carver plans to go to the University of Iowa and play basketball for the Hawkeyes! Amara Buchheit enjoys riding her bike, playing on her trampoline, and swimming. In school, she likes math, music, social studies, science, study hall, and PE. Her favorite

book is “Someday”. In her future she wants to be a teacher and/or a hair stylist! Kaitlin Picha loves to play basketball, softball, volleyball, and run track. School-wise, she enjoys math and science. Her favorite books are “Blast from the Past” and “Who Was Thomas Jefferson”. In her future, Kaitlin plans to be a teacher!

MFL MarMac Middle School participates in STEM Education experience On May 3rd, middle school students from MFL MarMac Middle School visited the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics for an interactive STEM Education experience as part of their reward for raising the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the Pennies for Patients contest.

MFL MarMac Middle School students visit University of Iowa Health Care for a hands-on, interactive learning experience On May 3rd, middle school students from MFL Marmac Middle School participated in interactive educational sessions with University of Iowa Health Care faculty, staff, and students, with the intent to pique interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These students had the opportunity to engage in health care and research experiences that provided them with real-life medical simulations and situations in which critical thinking and problem-solving are necessary. University of Iowa Health Care partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to host an educational experience, Pennies for Patients. LLS challenged middle school students to collect pennies which would be donated to LLS. The top two schools had the opportunity to visit UI Health Care for an educational experience.
