What does the future hold for Ogden Schools? Community members are encouraged to attend and be part of the discussion and planning sessions at a facilities studies meeting rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ogden High School cafeteria. (This is a rescheduled meeting originally planned for Monday, Feb. 8 that was postponed because of weather.) The meeting will be facilitated by Iowa Schoolhouse Construction & Planning Services and will include a final report and recommendations for the three school buildings in Ogden. The following is as previously written in The Ogden Reporter, Jan. 27 issue: School Improvement Advisory Committee, school board members and ALL interested staff and community members are asked to join us for further discussion on the facilities study that was conducted earlier this school year. In January, there was a public meeting that presented several ideas for reducing the amount of building square footage to maintain. The report concluded with some options for future facility considerations. The PowerPoint presentation from this meeting is available on the district website at this address: http://www.ogdenschools.org/sites/ogdenschools.org/files/ files/PrivateUser/JSundell/News%20Items/Ogden%20Community%20 Meeting%201.pdf It will be important that you review the PowerPoint prior to this meeting, as most of the information will not be repeated. This study may have a significant impact on the future of the district. We are expecting a final report and recommendations. We encourage you to attend and bring a friend. No formal action will be taken at this meeting.

Tiny Tykes Basketball by BECKY BLAIR Walking into a very familiar place, Howe Elementary’s gymnasium, I felt proud. Here was a gym full of eager children, a group of coaches, and parents. For each child there was at least one parent there, and in some cases a grandparent as well. By each of the six basketball hoops, there were at least six children waiting patiently in line for their turn to shoot. Coach Craig Christensen said that they work with two groups, one group of Pre-K and Kindergarteners and the other group first and second graders. This year they worked with 73 boys and girls in this program that has been in place for at least ten years, meeting four Saturdays in January. “Close!” was a word I heard often as a parent responded to his child’s shot. “You can do it! Stay behind this line. Aim high! Yes!” I can’t say there were all smiles, but mostly. Once in awhile a big, heavy basketball bumped into a nose or a mouth, and a few quiet tears fell. But I didn’t see one child give up! Yea! Coach Christensen called the group together and reviewed what they had learned that day. “What is it when you hold one foot still and move only the other one?” “Pivot!” “YES!” “What is it when you stand in front of another player and don’t let them get past you?” “Guard!” “Yes!” “Did we have fun today?” “YES!!” “I want you to keep practicing, and remember that you are good at this!” Coach encouraged. “Now, line up and I’ll get your medal. Should we do one more ‘GO BULLDOGS?” “YES!” And as each child came away with a medal proudly in hand, I couldn’t help but think, “Yes, Tiny Tykes getting an early start on their basketball careers are front to back, Kinley Ogden, Iowa is a GREAT place to raise a family!
