McGuire receives Patriot Award Certificate of Appreciation
Amber Kephart Regional Manager When Andrew McGuire, Keokuk County Engineer, attended the Employer Appreciation Day with Sgt. Mike Silvers, he had no idea that he would be nominated for an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) award. McGuire learned a lot that day about ESGR and what they do for our troops and their families. Like most, McGuire was unaware of ESGR and their services. With his new knowledge he attended a meeting with other county engineers and suggested having ESGR do a presentation about their services to the men and women who protect our country and their families. At the Monday, Feb. 8 Keokuk
County Board of Supervisors meeting, two members of ESGR, three service men, and Silvers interrupted McGuire’s five year proposal for Keokuk County bridge and road work, to present him with the award Silvers nominated him for. McGuire was more than shocked to turn around and see those men standing there. John Mikelson, an ESGR member, handed McGuire his award and expressed how important employers like him were imperative to our troops. McGuire feels that supporting our troops is important and appreciates the service our men and women do for our country. McGuire’s father was in the Marine Corps, so he understands how important it is that Silvers is still a service member and when
needed, he must go. According to Steve Bogle, Iowa ESGR State Char, “The Patriotic Employer Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nations call to serv. McGuire was nominated for being highly supportive of the National Guard by his reserve component employee. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s National Guard and Reserve units.” As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an in creasing number of unique missions
with America’s borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be the resource for the employers of citizen warriors. ESGR provides education, consultation, and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve
employees. More information about ESGR Employer Outreach Programs and volunteer opportunities is available at ww.esgr.mil, or by calling (800) 294-6607, ext 2757, 2742, or 4192.

Danielle Stout, Youngest Keokuk County Democratic Caucus Chair
Amber Kephart Regional Manager Danielle Stout, daughter of Rhonda (C.C.) Hoffman of Sigourney and Dave (Janet) Stout of Des Moines, is the youngest Keokuk County resident to have conducted a Democratic Caucus during Monday, Feb. 1 Caucus event. She is an active senior at Sigourney High School. Stout is involved in numerous activities; cross country, track, student government, student council, TAG, drama and speech, to name a few. She is also a member of the National Guard and attended basic training last summer. She plans to attend job training this summer and college next spring. At this time she has not decided where she will attend college, but has had several acceptance letters. Her plan is to go to college to get a business degree and potentially pursuing a career in politics. She feels politics are important because as civilians it is our job to get active, get involved and fight for what we feel is right. Her thoughts are if people are going to complain, why not do something to change it. “The fact of the matter is, no matter who is in office, it comes down to what we want and what we do and how we get involved,” says Stout. She has gotten very involved with this Presidential election and enjoys discussing politics in and out of her student government class. One person she enjoys discussing with is Keokuk County Democratic Chair, Mary Krier. She was excited to announce to Krier that she
would be attending her caucus and Krier suggested that she run her caucus. “We have had a lot more youth involvement in presidential campaigns before and during our caucuses this election year, which adds to the excitement! Not only did early youth activism bring in several presidential candidates to the Keota Schools, but Sigourney High School Senior, Danielle Stout, actually trained to successfully conduct the Sigourney 1st Ward Democratic Caucus Monday night,” says Krier. Stout is more liberal and leans towards supporting Bernie Sanders because she likes his views and the way he thinks and does business. She is happy with results from the Iowa Caucus and feels this was still a pretty big win for Sanders, because Hillary Clinton has a backing from Wall Street and bigger endorsements whereas Sanders doesn’t have any super packs all of his money comes from donations. “It is really important because right now in our country everyone wants to complain and say we were so much better so much longer ago, but if it’s really that bad I think that people need to get out and fight for what they want, because you can sit and complain all day but nothing is going to happen unless you get out and do it. With the new election, honestly who’s in office doesn’t really make a big difference because it comes down to everybody coming together and making a difference, nothing is going to happen unless we all come together and we all fight for what we want,” says Stout
