affordable nor is it good quality health care.” Also among the crowd were a number of MFL MarMac students. MFL MarMac Social Studies teacher Adam Simon was in attendance and had emailed his students about the event the night before encouraging them to attend as well. “I actually just found out about the Carson opportunity the night before from one of the kids and I thought what an excellent opportunity. We don’t often get Presidential candidates to come to our school district.” Simon said that he hopes seeing a candidate in person will help the students learn “that politicians are people just like the rest of us and sometimes they have that bigger than life persona when you see them on TV all the time. And now it’s like, yeah, they’re just like us.” Dr. Carson stepped on to the stage promptly at 9 a.m. and was met with a subdued crowd who were intent to listen to what the candidate had to say but didn’t go so far as to wave the campaign signs that had been placed on their seats. Carson began his speech by talking about his love of rural America and then segued into stories that illustrate his relationship with his faith. One story recounted a particularly risky surgery on a man’s brain stem. There was no better than a

it’s going to require common sense to get out of this situation, singling out the media and power brokers as the architects of doom who “have had control for decades and have gradually molded us and changed us. They are at the cusp of being able to accomplish the fundamental transformation of America.” The topic of ISIS and global terrorism also dominated Carson’s speech. In referencing the latest topic to populate the headlines, the question of whether Muslims should be welcome in the United States, Carson said, “I pretty much adopt the Teddy Roosevelt philosophy. In 1907, Teddy Roosevelt said, ‘We are a nation of immigrants. Anyone is welcome to come here from anywhere as long as you are willing to become an American, as long as you are willing to accept American values and American ways.’ I think that makes perfectly good sense because there is an American culture. Whether you’re in rural Iowa, New York City, New Mexico or Tallahassee, Florida, we basically share the same language, same culture, and largely the same values.” Regarding the rise of ISIS, Carson asserted that it’s important to keep the fight away from the homeland. “In order to protect ourselves at home,” he said, “we have to extinguish them over there. The longer we allow them to grow and to strengthen themselves, the more attacks are going to occur here.” Carson said he would rely on special ops for fighting. He said he also thinks it’s important to make sure revenue sources for ISIS dry up even if that means bombing oil tanker trucks. “You can’t fight a politically correct war,” Carson continued. “If you’re going to fight a politically correct war, then just say no war.” Carson outlined a plan to “strangulate command and control centers,” let them flee and then keep them on the run. “That’s the way that wars have been caught in the past when they have been successful,” Carson claimed. Dr. Carson took two questions from the audience, one about Fukushima and the other about the Affordable Care Act, before wrapping up the rally. The audience had the opportunity to meet the candidate immediately following the event.

Dr. Ben Carson, one of 14 Republicans vying to be the party’s candidate for President in 2016, made a stop in McGregor on Thursday, December 17. Carson took the stage at McGregor’s Landing and gave a thirty-minute speech that touched on topics ranging from foreign policy to the state of the country’s economy. Carson’s stop brought out a crowd of approximately 75 people from around the region. Robert McNamara made the 45-mile trek from his home in Spillville, Iowa to see Dr. Carson. “This will be the third time I will have seen Dr. Carson,” McNamara said. “I just really like the guy. He’s measured in his thinking. He’s not a knee-jerk kind of guy.” While McNamara considers himself a Carson supporter, he has also made a point

50/50 chance that the man would survive the surgery. “I had so many instances like that where I began to understand that it wasn’t necessarily me. Yes, you had to have a certain amount of skills, a certain amount of knowledge, but it was really God. And that’s how I began to conduct my life … really recognizing who was in charge.” Dr. Carson then began outlining his plans under a Carson administration. Referencing the over $18 trillion national debt, Carson said, “We are undermining the financial stability of our nation. With every extra dollar that we add to that debt we are destabilizing our situation.” He went on to say that

seemed especially pressing for Oftedahl. Having recently lost his job, he was frustrated by the economy and for having to buy his own insurance now that he’s unemployed. “Personally I don’t believe (Obamacare) is constitutional. I don’ t believe the federal government has the authority to fine me – up until recently anyway – has the authority to fine me for something that I am not forced to buy until now. I think it has screwed up the entire insurance industry. I would love to see the whole thing just get repealed. There are better ways for insurance to be affordable. The Affordable Care Act is not

of traveling around Iowa to see the other Republican candidates, including Mike Muckabee, Bobby Jindal and Donad Trump. “Carson would be my number one choice,” McNamara declared. “Jindal would have been my second choice probably. I liked Jindal and I liked Christie too because they were both good administrators after Hurricane Sandy. You didn’t have the corruption you had down in New Orleans. And Jindal had to come in and fix Ray Nagin’s corrupt mess. After that, he cleaned it up and got things moving again down there. They had both proven track records in a disaster, which the country is in a disaster. That’s how I feel about it.” Paul Oftedahl traveled from Decorah to see Dr. Carson in person. “I wanted to just be able to see him face to face,” Oftedahl said, “and see him in a situation just meeting the local people. I think he’s quite possibly the most decent person we have running.” Oftedahl also admitted that he came out to the meeting because he recently lost his job and thus finds himself with extra time on his hands. “I have a number of things I would ask him,” Oftedahl said. “Number one thing is a plan for economic recovery. Number two: defense. Number three: repeal of Obamacare.” Two of those questions
