Gene Toppin
Gene Toppin
Gene Toppin of Ventura is location manager of Five Star Co-op at Burchinal. Toppin also grain farms. 1. Why are you running for Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Board of Education? I want to use my knowledge and
experience of the past 13 years of serving on the Ventura School Board to enhance our new Garner-Hayfield-Ventura District and continue to do what’s best for students. During my 13 years on the Ventura School Board, I was involved in the discussion of sharing classes between the Garner-Hayfield and Ventura Districts, which brought about the discussion of Whole Grade Sharing in the middle and upper grades to merging the two districts into the new GHV district. We have such great communities working together to offer our students the best opportunities possible at GHV. I would like to see that continue and be a part of the new GHV District Board. 2. What do you see as goals or priorities for GHV for the next five years? My number one priority would be to have open and honest communication as a liaison to resident families, students, teachers, administration, and school board members. My goals for GHV in the upcoming years will be plans for development of the high school campus which are ongoing at the present time and would give students an exceptional learning environment. I want what’s best for the students in our district! 3. Additional comments: My family consists of my wife, Dana. Daughter Andrea is a 2011 graduate of Ventura High School and is currently attending Iowa State University for graduate classes. Son Joel is a 2014 graduate of GHV High School and is currently a sophomore
at Wartburg College. Educational background: I am Ventura High School graduate, a graduate of NIACC, and a graduate of Iowa State University majoring in Agricultural Business I belong to St. John Lutheran Church in Garner, Iowa and have been involved on the Church Council- currently serving as chairman.
By Rebecca Peter DES MOINES – A former Garner resident, Representative Linda Upmeyer (R-Clear Lake), will be the next Speaker of the Iowa House. Upmeyer makes Iowa history for being the first woman elected to the position. She will succeed Rep. Kraig Paulsen (R-Hiawatha) who announced earlier this month that he will not seek re-election and his intention to resign as Speaker before the 2016 session. “It is an honor to be selected as the next Speaker of the Iowa House and lead my caucus going into 2016,” Upmeyer said in a press release. “House Republicans are united and ready to return to Des Moines next January to continue crafting a budget that lives within our means and spends less than the state collects, just like Iowans do every day. House Republicans will also continue working to create a friendly business climate, strengthen Iowa families, and finding ways to make government smaller and more efficient.” Upmeyer, who was first elected to the House in 2002, previously served as the House Minority Whip for two years and most recently the House Majority Leader since 2011. She follows in the footsteps of her father, the late Delwyn Stromer. Del Stromer served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1966 to 1989 and as Speaker of the House for the 69th General Assembly in 1981-82. “I’m very excited about Linda Upmeyer being elected Speaker of the House,” said State Representative Terry Baxter (R-Garner). “She’d works really hard. She knows the whole arena extremely well and she deserves it. I’m extremely proud and I look forward to working with her as the next Speaker.” “Linda grew up hearing about politics around the dinner table…who gets things done and who has what responsibilities – how the process works. She should be well equipped for the place she’s being put in,” commented State Sen. Dennis Guth (R-Klemme).
Linda Upmeyer Guth added that in order to advance a conservative agenda, Upmeyer will need to go “toe to toe” with Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal (D-Council Bluffs). “I think we should all be praying that God will inspire her leadership and that the founding principles of our country are honored and she will be able to advance inalienable rights that are protected in our Constitution,” Guth said. A 1970 graduate or Garner-Hayfield, Upmeyer attended NIACC and the University of Iowa where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She received a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Drake University. She is a member of Farm Bureau, Prof. Cardiovascular Nurses Assn. and Iowa/American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau Int’l Nursing Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, and Phi Theta Kappa. A former trustee for North Iowa Area Community College, Upmeyer is also a former board member of both the National and Iowa Association of Community College Trustees. She currently serves at the Vice President on the Executive Board of the American Legislative Council. Linda and her husband, Doug, have five children and three grandchildren.
