By Michaela Kendall Staff Writer ELDORA – After a long day of biking, many RAGBRAI riders are happy to settle for an easy burger and fries from the food truck – but not Team Gourmet. Team Gourmet, as you can expect from their name, only eats delicious, gourmet meals prepared by their professional chefs each night during RAGBRAI. Their menu items include things like watercress soup with pear, grilled clams with miso, roasted eggplant with polenta, and even things like bison, lamb and crab legs. Team Gourmet’s meals definitely beat something out of a food truck any day, and everything is fresh and healthy, and locally sourced as much as possible. For the overnight stop in Eldora, the cuisine team camped out at local pastor and EMS Director Cory Larson’s house. After a long day’s ride, the chefs served Larson and the rest of the guests a real Team Gourmet meal of gazpacho, garbage salad with red chile dressing, strip steak with chimichurri butter, au gratin potatoes with stilton cheese and herbed peas and carrots. Just reading that list is enough to make any mouth water. Along with all the gourmet fare set out, the tables were lined with dozens of bottles of wine and beer, which are regularly supplied to the team by their sponsors at Heineken and Atlantic Bottling Company out of Waukee, Iowa.

They are not lining up at the food truck here. The food and drink wasn’t the only good thing about that night, though; Team Gourmet made good company as well. The team of 25, who are mostly from the Chicago area, are about as diverse as it gets, but they all found common ground in one thing: RAGBRAI. The team consists of doctors,

Hardin and Marshall seal recreational ties

By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – There is a growing partnership between Hardin and Marshall Counties when it comes to promoting recreation on the Iowa River and its environs. One of the most talked about features lately has been the plan to convert the old Iowa River Railroad to a recreational trail. That involves the city of Marshalltown and Hardin County and will eventually see the entire 30mile stretch of old rail bed converted

to a ten-foot concrete trail and stone crushed rock sidings. You can see a sample of it in Eldora right west of the Hy-Vee grocery. The completed project will run from near Steamboat Rock to the city of Marshalltown itself. But more than that, there has been a growing cooperation on promoting the recreational potential of the whole Iowa River Valley. That Greenbelt stretches from the upper most reaches of the river in Hardin County, all the way to Marshalltown. The latest development in that regard

came not long ago when the Iowa River Greenbelt Trust announced it had been seeing a spurt of new member sign-ups from outside its original home territory in Hardin County. Lots of Marshalltown names. The newly energized group has just recently taken advantage of $20,000 it was gifted from the state about a year ago – combining it with a matching amount it raised on its own – and used the total to engage a consulting firm to help come up with (continued on page 2A)

School signups scheduled (submitted by South Hardin Schools) SOUTH HARDIN – South Hardin High School and Eldora New Providence Elementary will be conducting registration for the 20152016 school year on August 11th at the high school. South Hardin High School will be conducting a 9th grade and new HS student orientation night on August 17th at the high school. ENP Elem. & SHHS registration forms can be found on-line at http://www. southhardin.k12.ia.us/ Laptops Submission of required forms, payment of the $45 Damage/ Loss Coop fee if desired, and laptop hand-out for RETURNING South Hardin High School 10-12 grade students will occur during the school registration time on Wednesday, August 11, from 12-8 p.m. THERE WILL NO LONGER BE A SEPARATE ROLLOUT NIGHT FOR RETURNING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. This will shorten the number and amount of times parents would be required to

be at school and allow for one check to be written for both registration and damage coop. Both a parent and the student need to be present at registration to sign forms, and the fees must be paid in order for the student to take their laptop home from registration on August 11th. Students not meeting these requirements will have their laptops handed out on the first day of school. Students whose families meet the income guidelines for free and reduced price lunches, the Family Investment Program (FIP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), transportation assistance under Open Enrollment, or who are in foster care, are eligible to have their student fees waived or partially waived. Apply for the waiver form at the Supt’s Office. Deadline to apply is August 10, 2015, 3:00 p.m. (continued on page 4A)

lawyers, pharmacists, first year riders, 15-year veteran riders and everything in between. With such a diverse group, you might think that things could get bumpy, but it’s all smooth riding for Team Gourmet. “We really are just one big traveling family,” said Janet Kersey Kowal, the team leader and a 15-

year RAGBRAI vet. The group has all the marks of a family, and they even have traditions of their own. One of these traditions, which may seem strange to outsiders, is the spoon check. If you happen to be traveling with Team Gourmet, and someone yells (continued on page 2B)
