Living with Lyme disease BCLUW grad shares s t o r y, w o r k s t o spread awareness through Lyme challenge
By ROB MAHARRY The Record CONRAD- Conrad native and current rural Union resident Cherilyn Eveleth, a 1994 BCLUW graduate, knew for years that something wasn’t right with her body, but whenever she turned for help, doctors couldn’t pinpoint the problem. When she eventually learned that she had Lyme disease in 2012, the tears she shed were of joy rather than sadness: Eveleth finally had answers. Lyme disease can be traced back to the bite of an infected deer tick, but Eveleth continued to experience symptoms long after her initial encounter. She dealt with extreme fatigue, unintentional weight loss, numbness, tingling and stomach pain for a prolonged period, and even a Lyme disease screening test came up negative (although the test is only about 67 percent effective). On a fateful day in northern Minnesota with her husband Dan near their lakeside cabin, he ran into an old friend who owned the marina and described the pain that Cherilyn had been enduring, and she related that her parents had Lyme disease and experienced similar symptoms. Before long, she was connected with a Lyme disease specialist, Dr. Thomas Sult, who just so happened to be in town that weekend, and she finally began to understand what was happening to her. The diagnosis came in: she had chronic Lyme disease. “It was definitely a God thing,” she said. “That day for some reason, she came down to talk to him. It was a little wavy that day on the lake, and (Dan) felt like there was something that was keeping him there.” Although Eveleth has experienced symptoms for years that are common to those affected

Fallen heroes remembered at local Memorial Day services Cherilyn Eveleth (left) and Marijke Carson recently took the Lyme Challenge to raise awareness about the disease, which is estimated to affect over 300,000 Americans. Eveleth has been speaking to various groups since being diagnosed with Lyme Disease. (Courtesy photo) by chronic Lyme disease, the topic is controversial: the medical community is somewhat divided on what to call the symptoms, and it is not currently an officially recognized disease covered by most insurers. Eveleth, a fourth grade teacher at St. Francis Catholic School in Marshalltown, has worked with State Senator Steve Sodders (D-State Center), State Representative Liz Mathis (D-Cedar Rapids) and State Representative Mark Smith (D-Marshalltown) on a bill that officially recognizes chronic Lyme disease; while it passed the state senate with unanimous approval, it failed to garner enough votes in the House to get to Governor Terry Branstad’s desk. “Talk to the people who have
experienced this, and talk to our families who have seen us go through this challenge. Ask them, ‘Do you see this, and is it real?’” she said. “My question to medical professionals who say, no, there’s no chronic Lyme disease, is this: Do you think we like this? Do you think we’re making this up?” In response to popular viral trends like the Ice Bucket Challenge and the Polar Plunge, the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) and other Lyme disease advocates have put together a new movement to spread awareness about the disease: the Lyme Challenge, or Taking a Bite Out of Lyme. By ROB MAHARRY The Record BEAMAN, CONRAD- As the sounds of the BCLUW high school band’s patriotic tunes made their way through the air along with the roars of rifles and cannons, members of the Beaman and Conrad communities took time to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to the United States of
America during a pair of Memorial Day services on Monday. First Presbyterian Church Pastor Kerry Carson gave the invocation and benediction at the Conrad service Monday morning, thanking servicemen and women who died in the line of combat and praying that their sacrifices may never be forgotten, and Hailey Clemons of the Junior Auxiliary
Unit Post 681 of Conrad gave a patriotic reading. Legionnaire Jerry Miller read the names of Conrad soldiers and veterans who are now deceased dating all the way back to the Revolutionary War through the U.S.’s most recent military conflicts. Freedom Rock arrives in Conrad Painting expected to be finished next summer By ROB MAHARRY The Record CONRAD- The Freedom Rock of Grundy County arrived at its new home in Conrad about three weeks ago, and painting and design are
expected to be completed and ready for the public by next summer. The Conrad family donated the rock from their farm just west of Conrad, and Dave’s Crane and Wrecker Service of Union hauled the giant boulder to its resting place at Gier Park just north of downtown Conrad across from the fire station. Artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, who resides in Greenfield, first
painted a freedom rock near his home in southwest Iowa before branching out, and with inspiration from Senator Chuck Grassley and Des Moines Register columnist Kyle Munson’s “99 county tours, he is now working to put a rock in every county in the state. A total of 28 counties already have finished See FREEDOM ROCK ...continued on page 2

the foundation from its birth in 1985. This growth is the result of hard work and sacrifice of alumni, community volunteers, and high school students. Along with them, charitable individuals, businesses and organizations have enabled the foundation to reach the goal of providing scholarships to graduating seniors as well as numerous school projects.” Hoff, a retired teacher, now stays active in the American Legion Post 681 in Conrad as well as various BCLUW activities. “It is my hope that in the future, the foundation will provide scholarships to every deserving senior pursuing higher education and continue those scholarships until they reach their goal,” he added. Johnsrud reflected on the early days of the Foundation dating back to the 1980’s and how it has grown to help hundreds of students from BCLUW over the years in pursuing a postsecondary education. “I attended a talk at the Iowa Association of School Boards meeting in Des Moines while on the school board. They presented on Cedar Rapids Prairie High School’s Foundation. Bringing the idea back to the next school board meeting, all thought it was a good idea.
