Help needed to set up flags for Memorial Day

Hampton Chronicle

This Memorial Day weekend, American Legion Post 21, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4828 and friends will again assemble the Avenue of Flags at both Buffalo Center cemeteries. This year’s display will include about 20 more flags than last year, and the veterans are looking for helpers to make quick work of placing nearly 200 flags. Any helpers are welcome and greatly appreciated. The group plans to start putting up the flags at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 23 at the cemeteries.

Memorial Day commemorations next Monday

The communities of Buffalo Center, Lakota, Rake and Thompson will commemorate Memorial Day next Monday, May 25, with events being held in each community. Buffalo Center begins its Memorial Day salute with a parade, which gathers at 8:45 a.m. Monday morning at the corner of 2nd Ave and 1st St. NW. The parade will travel one block east to Main Street, one block north and then west to the school, where a Memorial Day program will be held in the North Iowa Auditorium. Brad Huntington is the featured speaker at Buffalo Center’s Memorial Day program. Following the program in the auditorium, services will be held at the cemeteries north of Buffalo Center. Refreshments will also be served in the school commons following the program in the auditorium and continuing after the services at the cemetery. Lakota will hold its Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. in the Eagle Center. The program will be followed by military rites at Maple Hill and St. Paul Lutheran cemeteries, and then lunch will be served at the Eagle Center. The Rake Memorial Day Program will be held at Zion Lutheran Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. This year’s speaker is Pastor Mark Brickzin. Coffee will be served at Rake City Hall following the program. Thompson will hold a Memorial Day Luncheon on Monday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Branding Iron’s Round Up Room. Freewill donations will be accepted for the Thompson Swimming Pool. Full Memorial Day program itineraries for Buffalo Center and Rake can be found elsewhere in this edition.

United Methodist Church to host Community Vacation Bible School Jungle Safari: Where Kids Explore the Nature of God is the theme of Community Vacation Bible School this year in Buffalo Center. Several area churches join forces annually to make this summer staple a reality. All the fun begins on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m. at Buffalo Center’s United Methodist Church, located at 215 1st St. NW. United Methodist is this year’s host congregation. Other cooperating churches that make VBS possible are Bethlehem Lutheran Church, First Congregational Church, First Reformed Church and Zion Lutheran Church of Rake. Pre-registration letters went home with the kids, and the drop off sites for registration include: with Kim Ostermann at the school, the drop off box at Murra Hardware or with the local pastors. Children who aren’t registered are still welcome to attend, but pre-registration helps with planning. There is no fee to attend VBS. Classes for children are pre-Kindergarten (age 4) through 6th grade

(year completed in school). VBS will begin on Tuesday, May 26 and go through Friday, May 29. A light supper will be available for $1.00 per child starting at 5:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Opening exercises will begin in the sanctuary at 6:00 p.m. An evening offering will be received for the mission project, which is providing animals to underprivileged people all around the world through Heifer International. Nightly, boys and girls vote with their offerings whether to provide bunnies, chicks, geese, goats, pigs, ect. VBS also incorporates great songs, funny skits, crafts and snacks that every boy and girl will enjoy. Each evening concludes with a wind up in the sanctuary by 8:15 p.m. Parents should pick up their children promptly. An Ice Cream Social and program will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for the entire community in the sanctuary at United Methodist.

The new furniture has arrived at the Buffalo Center Library Park. People are invited to read, have a snack, or just enjoy the outdoors at the park.

Sit back and relax at Library Park New benches and a picnic table have arrived at the Library Park in Buffalo Center. City workers and volunteers were at the park last Wednesday to install the furniture, which was purchased thanks to a $983 grant from the Build with Bags program. The furniture was manufactured by Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls and matches the benches and planters used on Main Street during the summer. As part of the Build with Bags program, the library is also offering reusable cloth bags to anyone who brings in 50 plastic bags to the library for recycling. The library hopes that the park will be a nice spot for outdoor reading, and it will be useful for the library’s summer reading program. The library also invites people to use the park for coffee time and small meetings and as a lunch spot for downtown business people.

Scott Armstrong, left, and Dewey Hinz unload one of the benches to be placed in the Buffalo Center Library Park last Wednesday, May 13.
