Sigourney Elementary Holds Bike Rodeo
Allison Glandon NR Editor Keokuk County Ambulance Service came to Sigourney Elementary Friday, May 8 to educate children on bicycle safety. The children were fit and given helmets if they didn’t already own one, and taught the proper rules for riding bicycles. The children were also taught how to distinguish different signs when riding and proper riding attire. The Ambulance Service holds a Bike Rodeo every 3 years and attend Sigourney, Keota and Tri-County Schools. The helmets that are given are either bought from a memorial account, which are donations from people who have passed away, or donated from another party. This year the Kiwanis donated a large amount for the helmets. Keokuk County Ambulance service along with Sigourney Police Department, reward children by giving out prizes if they see them wearing bicycle helmets and promoting bicycle safety. The prizes they can receive are either a free ice cream cone from Walk “ER” Drive Thru, or a free game of bowling at the Keokuk County Bowling Alley. All these prizes are donated from the Keokuk County Bowling Alley.
IEDA Evaluates Sigourney’s Square Allison Glandon NR Editor The Iowa Economic Development Authority team visited Sigourney’s square Wednesday, May 6. The IEDA team, Jim Engle, Debi Flanders and Tim Reinders, walked around the downtown area with community leaders, Rick Landgrebe, John Wehr, Shirly Holm, Lucas Meier and Donna Grossman. The team evaluated the square based on appearances of shops, restaurants and other businesses, sidewalks, alleys, and more. After a tour by the community leaders, the IEDA team discussed privately what they thought the downtown Sigourney area could use to be more inviting. A meeting was then held and the IEDA team discussed things that could be changed and how to get the grants to do so. Some of the suggestions made were: enforcing lower floor residents to clean up trash and make
the sidewalk clear; repainting businesses; fill vacant buildings; widow and sign displays; placing trash dispensers on the square; and fixing broken windows. The IEDA Team would also like to see Sigourney show more of the Historical side of the community. “Sigourney has many hidden gems, and you should play off of the historical side by doing tours, and maybe opening up a theater in Memorial Hall. A USDA grant could get something back into that building,” said IEDA member Tim Reinders. The IEDA team did give good feedback while on this visit. They were impressed with the new street lamps being installed, the new City Park, restoration of the fountain and how certain businesses displayed themselves. Before leaving, the team gave information on how to obtain a grant that could give up to $500,000 to redo the square.
City Council Meeting
Allison Glandon NR Editor The Sigourney City Council held a meeting Wednesday, May 6 at City Hall on the square in Sigourney. With a full agenda, The Council started with Dr. Tony Vanden Bush and his request to continue his venture in opening VBJ LLC at 1400 N. Cherry St. in Sigourney. This property would allow light manufacturing of infused alcoholic beverages. This business would include bottling, mixing and storing these beverages. The Council agreed that if Dr.Vanden Bush gets approval from the state and the site of his business passes inspection, they will support this new business in the community. The Council agreed to put in a ramp at Memorial Hall to make the building more accessible. Michael and Trudy Welter of 315 N. Jefferson St. in Sigourney are granting their property to be used for the new ramp. The community will see changes in the Fourth of July festivities this year. The Council is donating $3,000 to the July Fourth Committee and have made changes to the past years activities agenda. This year’s activities will be held at the EXPO Fairgrounds instead of Legion Park, where it has been held in the past. Some things you can expect to see at the EXPO are: food vendors, bands, beer tents, luncheons, inflatables and much more. There will be a fee at the gate, in hopes that in the next few years this celebration will be self-supporting. Lastly, The Council spoke with Don Northup about changes needed at the Sigourney Pool.
Northup and The Council discussed the need for a new floor in the bathhouses after this pool season. The floors are slick and need new paint. Putting in rubber mats is a temporary fix for this season. Northup also asked The Council for approval of purchasing a new PA and radio system. The new system is all in one, and will be more user friendly for the Pool Staff. The new PA and radio system is estimated at $1,000.
