Evan’s Walk
Evan’s Walk will be held Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place at Wilson Park in Keota. This walk is a two mile walk around the park.

By Hailey Brown The Wilson Memorial Library in Keota has some noticeably different installations to their building and staff. Two new employees have been added to the lineup: Tomisha Sprouse (pictured) as Library Director and Nancy Byers, listed on the
library website as Assistant. Aside from the new staff members, the library is also sporting landscape changes courtesy of the Board, new chairs, and a fresh interior paint job. According to Sprouse, the library will also be expecting new computer chairs after receiving a $1,000 grant
from the Keokuk County Community Endowment Foundation. All of these changes are being implemented just in time for the Summer Reading Program set to kick off next month.

Changes in Full Effect at Wilson Memorial
Grace Shemanski, a 4-H member of the Liberty Leaders 4-H Club and the Keokuk County 4-H Youth Council, has been chosen to represent Keokuk County 4-H as a member of the Iowa State 4-H Council for the 2015-2016 school year. The Iowa State 4-H Council is composed of approximately 40 energetic, positive high school juniors and seniors who act as ambassadors for 4-H. One of their major responsibilities is planning the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference held in Ames every June. Members are selected from their extension areas through an application and interview process. year at the State 4-H Camping Center. They get to know each other through team building activities, planning conference, promoting 4-H, helping to ensure funding for 4-H programs. Members commonly end up forming friendships that last a lifetime. “Our 4-H program is ecstatic to have Grace Shemanski represent our county at the state level,” comments Michele Sieren, Keokuk County 4-H/Youth Educator, “It’s another great thing happening in Keokuk County 4-H!” Grace is currently a junior at Keota Community Schools, and is the daughter of Dave & Cari Shemanski of Keota.
Marjorie C. Baker, a senior at Keota High School in Keota, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Grand Lodge of Iowa, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Marjorie was one of 60 outstanding Iowa high school students selected to receive the scholarship from over 650 applicants. Iowa Masons award scholarships each year in recognition of a student’s academic performance, community activities, leadership, and financial need. Since the program’s inception in 1970, the Grand Lodge of Iowa has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to over 1,800 students. This year alone $120,000 in scholarships were awarded from an endowment fund established to recognize the accomplishments of young Iowans and to SCHOLARSHIP to page 2
Keota Veterans of Foreign Wars Poker Tournament
The Keota Veterans of Foreign Wars recently held their yearend Texas Hold Em Poker Tournament at the local V.F.W. Isaac Althenhofen (right) and Pat Hammen (left), whittled the starting field of 10 down to themselves. In the end, Althenhofen won out over Hammen on the last hand.
Kiwanis Highway Cleanup
The spring Kiwanis highway cleanup took place on Saturday, April 11, along Highway 92 just west of Sigourney. The Sigourney Kiwanis clean up this two-mile stretch of highway in the spring and fall of every year. This year several kids from the Sigourney High School Key Club joined in the fun along with a student from Keota High School and a Sigourney Junior High student. The group spent two hours working on both sides of the highway to pick up over twenty bags of garbage. The group included Kiwanis members Ken Bucklin, Lyle Donald, Matt Ives, Jill Sande and John Schroeder. Key Club members present were Tanner Bos, Eric Meiners and Collin Svenby. Nick Ives from Keota High School and Brooke Donald from Sigourney Junior High also helped.
