Bingo at Keokuk County Expo

The last winter Bingo will be held at the Keokuk County Expo on Wednesday, March 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Sigourney’s Outdoor Warning System

Sigourney’s outdoor warning system (tornado siren) testing is the first and third Fridays of each month beginning in April and tested through September. The first test is scheduled for Friday, April 3. An additional statewide tornado drill will be held Wednesday, March 25 at 10:00 a.m. in reminder of Severe Weather Awareness Week. The testing is between 9-9:30 a.m. unless weather is threatening at the time.

Manor House Happenings

Springfield Builders Incorporated broke ground for the new Dollar General on Monday, March 16.

Dollar General coming to Hedrick

By Amber Kephart NR Editor Construction has started for a new Dollar General to go into Hedrick. This store is being built at the corner of Highway 149 and Spring Street and will be just over 8,800 square feet.

Springfield Builders Incorporated is the construction company working on this project; they broke ground Monday, March 16. Project superintendent, Bobby Shires said they will turn the keys over to Dollar General June 1. Shires has an arrival date of April 6 for the

building.

Hedrick mayor, Robert Crawford said, “We are all very excited for Dollar General to come to town. This is a wonderful thing for our community.” Crawford is hopeful that Dollar General will be open late June.

Lewis Memorial Fountain Update

By Amber Kephart NR Editor The first phase of restoration is underway. While there is a lot of work to be done it is nice to see the process being started. The Fountain Committee is able to proceed with this first phase of the restoration because of donations and fundraisers. There is enough money in the fund to allow the removal of lime buildup and apply the acid bath. The budget for res-

toration and future maintenance is 150,000 dollars. This budget includes restoration of the fountain, replace the control panel and manifold, the fencing and concrete work around the fountain, plumbing, incidentals, a donor monument and future maintenance.

The goal is to start the fountain over the July 4th celebrations. In order to do that the committee has to raise enough money through grants,

Voter Registration Deadline for Special Sigourney School Election The voter registration deadline to pre-register to vote for the upcoming Special Sigourney Election is Friday, March 27, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. According to Keokuk County Auditor, Christy Bates, the Auditor’s Office will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on that day.

You may register at your precinct on Election Day. Be sure to bring along a current photo ID with an expiration date stating your current address. If your photo ID does not have your current address please contact the Auditor’s Office at (641) 6222320 for additional requirements.

Absentee ballots for the Special Sigourney School Election are now available for voting at the Auditor’s Office. To obtain an absentee ballot go to the County’s website www.keokukcountyia.com and download the Absentee Ballot Request Form or your request may be written on pa-

per no smaller than 3x5 inches and state you would like to vote in the Special Sigourney School Election, April 7, 2015, the address you would like the ballot mailed to, your date of birth and it must be signed by each person requesting a ballot. Mail your form to: Keokuk County Auditor, Christy Bates, 101 South Main St., Sigourney, Iowa 52591.

Absentee ballots that are returned by mail must be postmarked on or before April 6, 2015. Voted absentee ballots may also be returned to the Auditor’s Office in person until 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. Crawford Advances to State Finals in the National American Miss Iowa Pageant

Miss Alexandria Rose Crawford, age 10, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss Iowa Pageant to be held May 2-3 at the beautiful Ramada and Convention Center in Waterloo. The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 4-18, and have five different age divisions. Alexandria will be participating in the pre-teen 10-12 age division, along with other outstanding young ladies fro across the great state of Iowa.

The National American Miss Pageant is unlike any other. All activities and competitions are kept age appropriate. Girls under the age of 12 are not allowed to wear makeup and there is no swimsuit competition. The Pageant program is based on inner-beauty, as well as poise and presentation, and offers an “All-American” spirit of fun for family and friends. Emphasis is put on the importance of developing self-confi-

Tech Scam has hit Sigourney **FOLLOW UP TO TECH SCAM - NEW INFORMATION** The Sigourney Police Department has received several reports that a commonly used phone number involved in this scam is 703-800-3331. If you receive a call from this number be aware that it is a scam.

It has frequently been reported to the Sigourney Police Department that there is a telephone scam going on in our area that involves computer problems. A Sigourney resident reported that a caller that claimed to be from a computer company told him that it had come to his attention that his computer had errors on it. The caller then tried to walk the resident through steps on the computer. Luckily, our Sigourney resident was feeling uncomfortable with the phone call and hung up. If a caller were to gain access to your computer they could possibly do the following: Trick you into installing malicious software that could capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords.

They might also then charge you to remove this software.

Take control of your computer remotely and adjust settings to leave your computer vulnerable.

Request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services.

Direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information there.

Not all phone calls could be conducted the same and it is important for you to know that companies usually never contact you to let you know there is an issue on your computer. If someone calls you and you are concerned with the authenticity of the phone call, feel free to call the Sigourney Police Department at 641-622-2345 before doing any kind of business with the caller.

Another option is to contact a local company that provides computer tech support.

VA Eliminates Net Worth as Health Care Eligibility Factor from Keith Blair, Keokuk County Veteran’s Affairs Administrator

Stepping Up Efforts Against Human Trafficking Human trafficking is happening here in the heartland. This week, the Iowa Senate passed SF 450 to battle human trafficking, which is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. The legislation is part of a dedicated effort to expose it, punish the perpetrators and help the victims return to a better life.

The bill: • Makes human trafficking a forcible felony, which means if a person is convicted of or pleads guilty to human trafficking, they will have to go to prison. It will also be a non-bailable offense with no deferred judgments, deferred sentences or suspended sentences.

• Requires the Crime Victim Assistance Division of the Attorney General’s Office to develop outreach,

public awareness and training programs on human trafficking, and allows the division to use money from the Victim Compensation Fund to pay for those efforts.

• Requires certified law enforcement officers to have four hours of in-service training every five years on human trafficking, sexual assault, domestic abuse, stalking and harassment. The training will be developed by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in conjunction with the Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

• Requires the Division of Criminal & Juvenile Justice Planning to research and collect data on human trafficking and related crimes. This should help provide a clearer picture of human trafficking in Iowa and what we need to do to combat it.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is updating the way it determines eligibility for VA health care, a change that will result in more Veterans having access to the health care benefits they’ve earned and deserve.

Effective 2015, VA eliminated the use of net worth as a determining factor for both health care programs and copayment responsibilities. This change makes VA health care benefits more accessible to lower-income Veterans and brings VA policies in line with Secretary Robert A. McDonald’s MyVA initiative which reorients VA around Veterans’ needs.

“Everything that we do and every decision we make has to be focused on the Veterans we serve,” said VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald. “We are working every day to earn their trust. Changing the way we determine eligibility to make the process easier for Veterans is part of our promise to our Veterans.”

Instead of combining the sum of Veterans’ income with their assets to determine eligibility for medical care and copayment obligations, VA will now only consider a Veteran’s gross household income and deductible expenses from the previous year.

That change better aligned VA’s health care financial assessment program with other federal health care organizations.

The Easter Bunny is Coming to Sigourney The Easter Bunny is scheduled to visit Sigourney on April 4, 2015 as part of the 2015 Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by MidWestOne Bank and Pizza Ranch.

The egg hunt will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 with the Sigourney Fire Department escorting the Easter Bunny to the north side of the courthouse.

The hunt this year is open to all children ages pre-school through 4th grade. All parents and children should congregate on the courthouse north sidewalk at 10:00 a.m. for the arrival of the bunny. Parents and kids should then move to their designated corner of the courthouse lawn for the egg hunt: Preschool NW quadrant; Kindergarten NE quadrant; 1st – 2nd Grade SE quadrant; 3rd – 4th Grade SW quadrant.

Pizza Ranch is donating 20 $5.00 gift certificates that will randomly be placed in plastic eggs for the hunt.

Please remember to bring a basket for collecting eggs. Don’t forget to

get your picture taken with the bunny. The traditional egg drop from Dan Appleget’s crane will not be held this year.

Free parking is available on the streets adjacent to the downtown square and the City parking lot located behind MidWestOne Bank.

Restrooms are available at the City Hall. If there is heavy rain, threatening weather or snow on the ground candy will be handed out in the MidWestOne Bank lobby from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. the same day.

David Elmore Juanita McFarlan A celebration of life service is to be held for David Elmore on April 12 from Juanita McFarlan, age 95, of Sigourney, formerly of What Cheer, died Satur1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hedrick Community Center. The service will be provided by Kevin and Shannon Elmore. The Hedrick Community center is located at 109 N. Main St. in Hedrick.

Shari Friis

Shari Friis, from West Branch age 45 died on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 surrounded by her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. Although she didn’t want to leave her children she knew God was calling her name.

Shari was diagnosed with non-smoker lung cancer on January 25, 2013.

A celebration of life was held 10:30 a.p. Saturday March 21, 2015 at Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch.

Visitation was Friday from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Home in West Branch. A memorial fund has been established. Online condolences may be made to the family at www. hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com.

Shari Lee Glandon was born on November 20, 1969 in Oskaloosa to Billy Lee and Pamela Kay Derby Glandon. Shari grew up in Sigourney graduating with the class of 1988. She married James M. Friis on July 26, 1997 in West Branch. Jim and Shari were blessed with two children, Billy and Anna who are still at home.

Shari was a devoted wife and mother. She loved raising her children and was very active in all their school activities. She loved being able to help out the team sports by working in the concession stand or bringing treats to the teammates. She loved watching her children in music and show choir.

She was happiest being a Mom. Shari was so proud of her kids and that love also surrounded her nieces and nephews. She thought of them as her own children and was very involved in their lives also. Shari’s joy was her family.

Shari had tremendous faith in God. She had a wonderful relationship with Him. Throughout her battle with cancer she trusted God and held him close to her heart. She is now with God and her Dad and is at peace.

Shari is survived by her husband Jim of West Branch and her children Billy and Anna at home, her Mother Pamela Glandon of West Branch.

Brothers Jeffrey (Vicki) Glandon of New Franklin, MO, Patrick Glandon of Greenbriar, AR, Sister Susan (Joe) Wasko of Keosauqua; Nephews Kyle (Brittany) Glandon of Batavia, Nick (Jessi) Glandon of New Franklin, MO and Jacob (Katy) Wasko of Fort Wayne, IN. Nieces Elisa (Alex) Lyons of North Liberty, Katie (Skylar) Wasko of West Des Moines, and Ele (Jared) Kueckelhan of Booneville, MO. She was also awaiting 2 Grandnieces to be born this spring. Also surviving are her father and mother-in-law, Herb and Karen Friis, brother-in-Law JaFriis, sister-in-laws Ellen (Joe) In Loving Memory of son Ehle and Erin (Eric) Mok as well as John Robert George many Aunts and Uncles who love her very much. She attended schools in What Cheer and Gibson, graduating from Gibson High School in 1937. On March 22, 1943, she married Kenneth Ford McFarlan in Leesville, La. Following marriage the couple lived in What Cheer, where Juanita worked for Iowa Southern Utilities and First State Bank. She was a member of the What Cheer United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for several years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, Lydia Circle and Chapter Y P.E.O. Survivors include two children: Gary (Barbara) McFarlan of Altoona and Carolyn Sue (Ron) Merz of Harper; six grandchildren: Kimberly (Doug) Arndt, Alison and Andrew of Indianola, Gregory (Andrea) McFarlan, Keaton and Garrison of Urbandale, Brooke Schmidt of Des Moines and Cathrine Schmidt of New York City, Gregory (Charlene) Merz, Molly and Graham of Minneapolis, Minn. and Travis Bloomquist of Neb. and Christopher Merz, Ben and Matt of Cedar Falls and five great great grandchildren: Autumn, Haley, Abby, Kaydin and Chloe. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Ford in 2012; three sisters: Selena Stephenson, Blanche Hicklin and Mildred McKay and two brothers: George Howard and Warren Howard.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the What Cheer United Methodist Church, with Pastor Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at McFarlan Cemetery in What Cheer.

Eleanor Behrens

Eleanor Behrens, 95 of What Cheer, died Sunday, March 15, 2015 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in What Cheer. Burial followed at the Highland Cemetery at What Cheer.

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 17 at Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Memorial contributions may be made to the What Cheer United Methodist Church or to the Freedom Rock Fund. Friends may offer condolences at www.hollandcoblefuneralhomes.com.

Eleanor Charlotte Behrens was born on October 19, 1919 in What Cheer, the daughter of William E. and Viola Pearl Nanke Fyfe. She attended Thornburg High School and graduated in 1937. Eleanor also attended the Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1941. She was then united in marriage to Kenneth Behrens in 1942 at Rock Island, Ill. Eleanor worked nights as an RN at the Keokuk County Hospital, and eventually became the Director of Nursing. She worked for Dr. Ed Gann, Dr. Lee McClenhan and Dr. Opis Judapa. Eleanor was proud mother of three children. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the What Cheer Methodist Church and became a Gold Star Mother after her son Tom was killed in Vietnam. Eleanor loved quilting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, gardening and canning. She was very patient, had a strong faith, loved her husband and taught her children to love.

Preceding Eleanor in death were her parents, her husband, Kenneth; her son, Thomas Martin Behrens; her brother, Edward Fyfe; and her sister, Wilma Barnett.

Those left to honor Eleanor’s memory are her son, Dan (Lori) Behrens of Oskaloosa; her daughter, Mary (Barry) Flint of Ottumwa; her five grandchildren: Amy (Rob) Boze of Sterling, Ill., John (Nichole) What Cheer Flint of Cedar Falls, Rachel Flint of West Des Moines; Nick (Crystal) Morrison of Medina, Minn., Paige Behrens of Ames and her eight great grandchildren: Emma, Will, Ben, and James Boze and Abigail, Ian, Elijah and Aleah Flint.

Students Take Honors at State PAS Conference With Dordt College Dordt College students participated in the 2015 PAS Conference at Honey Creek Resort in Moravia.

Dalton Webster of Sigourney, was a member of the Crop Specialist Team that finished in first place (Webster took 1st individual honors). He also took 3rd place individual honors for Crop Production. Webster is a junior majoring in Agriculture: Plant Science.

Gretchen Witzenburg of Sigourney, was a member of the Crop Specialist Team that finished in first place (Witzenburg took 3rd individual honors). She also took 2nd place individual honors for Vegetable Production. Witzenburg is a sophomore majoring in Agriculture: Plant Science.

This year, 230 students from 11 Iowa colleges competed, and 31 Dordt College Ag Club members competed on 11 teams and in 13 individual events. Dordt qualified for 27 spots at the National PAS competition, taking place in March.

PAS, the national Postsecondary Agriculture Student organization, is associated with agriculture/ agribusiness and natural resources offering to approved postsecondary institutions. PAS is one of 10

Sigourney Students Named To Central College Dean’s List

Morgan Wilson and Andrew Fritz of Sigourney were named to the fall 2014 Central College dean’s list. Wilson is a psychology and political science major, and Fritz studies athletic training.

The honor is awarded to fulltime students who achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking 12 or more graded credit hours for the semester.

What Cheer Baptist Church Kids Club Prepares for Their First Easter Program Twenty-nine children from the What Cheer Baptist Church Club are busy preparing for their first Easter Program. All children participating are from the What Cheer and Delta areas. They will be performing three short one act plays; ‘Blind Bartemaes Receives His Sight’, ‘The Triumphant Ride’ and ‘Jesus is the Real Reason

for the Easter Season.’

They will be stretching the days of Easter Celebrations to include their program on April 8, the first Wednesday evening after Easter at 6:30 p.m. at the What Cheer Baptist Church. The public is invited and there is no charge for the program.

A time of refreshment for all those

LOCAL OPTION SALES AND SERVICES TAX ORDINANCE Ordinance # 43 An ordinance establishing a Local Option Sales and Services tax applicable to transactions within the incorporated areas of Hedrick and Thornburg and the unincorporated area of Keokuk County.

WHEREAS, the cities of Hedrick and Thornburg and the unincorporated area of Keokuk County, Iowa, have complied with the statutory and electoral requirements to impose and collect local option sales and services tax upon transactions within their respective incorporated and unincorporated areas thereof pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 422B which further requires that the Keokuk County Board of Supervisors adopt an ordinance to implement the same, the Board of Supervisors determines that it is appropriate to do so, and hereby adopts and enacts the following LOCAL OPTION SALES AND SERVICES TAX ORDINANCE upon the first consideration thereof after suspending the statutory requirement that the ordinance be considered and voted upon for passage at two meetings of the Board of Supervisors prior thereto by a recorded vote of the majority of that Board, to-wit: SECTION 1: TITLE This ordinance shall be entitled LOCAL OPTION SALES AND SERVICES TAX ORDINANCE. SECTION 2: PURPOSE The purpose of this ordinance is to implement the local option sales and services tax approved by the voters of the cities of Hedrick and Thornburg and the unincorporated area of Keokuk County, Iowa.

The rate of the tax shall be one percent (1 %) upon the gross receipts taxed under Iowa Code Chapter 422, Division IV and 422B-Local Option Tax, in the cities of Hedrick and Thorn-

burg and the unincorporated area of Keokuk County, Iowa.

The local sales and services tax herein is imposed on transactions occurring on or after July 1,2015 until further changed and/or repealed within the incorporated city limits of Hedrick and Thornburg and the unincorporated area of Keokuk County, Iowa. All persons required to collect state gross receipts taxes shall collect the tax pursuant to Iowa Code section 422B.8 for local option sales and services tax.

All applicable provisions of the appropriate sections of Iowa Code Chapter 422, Division IV are adopted and incorporated as a part hereof by this reference.

SECTION 4: SEVERAbILITY CLAUSE If any section, provision or part of this ordinance shall be adjudged invalid or unconstitutional, such adjudication shall not affective the validity of the ordinance as a whole or any section, provisions or part thereof not adjudged to be invalid or unconstitutional.

SECTION 5: EFFECTIVE DATE This ordinance shall be in effect after its final passage, approval and publication as provided by law.

Keokuk County Society News Tales of the Ancient Sportsman

Ahhhhh! Glorious spring is here. It may be a little chilly yet, but the signs of spring are everywhere. On the first official day of spring the little crocuses in front of my patio opened up into beautiful purple and white flowers and that gave me a lift. The daffodils are beginning to swell and the blooms are not too far away. My tulips are doing nicely and they look to be on schedule. Maybe we will have tulips at Tulip Time this year.

I did manage to get in a full nine holes of golf Thursday and it sure felt good.

The tendonitis in my knee is still there and a little painful, but I made it and played about as well as I can play. And no, I won’t use a cane unless it is my putter. That putter works pretty well in that capacity.

And it is the time of year that farmers are getting itchy. Machinery is being prepped and ready to go. I even see some random disking going on, but not too much. It is still a little early. If we can just get some rain this week, things will green up and then things begin to happen in the fields.

There is an ongoing battle raging in my back yard. It is between the humans and the squirrels. Anytime you operate a giveaway program such as a bird feeder, you will have those the program is not intended for trying to horn in. That is typical of any government program.

Just when I think I have the squirrel proof feeder, I am proven wrong. This time I think I have found the right combination. The squirrels are hacked off and there is a lot of tail shaking going on. But those rascals will not give up

and before long I will probably be looking for a new twist. But for the time being, I’m going to enjoy looking out the kitchen window and laughing at them.

It has been a quiet week sports wise and I have enjoyed a slower pace. I had no games to cover this week and no track meets. Logan did have a Senior Babe Ruth doubleheader Saturday and Sunday. Due to other commitments, I had to miss both of them. Even though I missed the games Logan’s team won both Saturday games quite easily and he did well.

Saturday my bank travel groups from Conrad, Parkersburg and Cedar Falls had a tour to Cedar Rapids for the Cedar Rapids Follies. It was a good show and a good time, but by the time I got home it was a long day. I did see some old friends that were with other groups at the Follies. That makes the day even more special.

Sunday afternoon we took in a concert sponsored by Journey Bound Quartet at Pella Christian. Journey Bound opened the concert and turned it over to Greater Vision. Greater Vision is one of the top male trios in Southern Gospel Music and they were top shelf.

It was an inspiring concert and enjoyed by a large crowd. After the concert, we went out to Applebee’s for dinner. I decided to try a Franwich to perhaps bring my Hawkeyes a little luck. All I got out of that was a good dose of indigestion and the Hawks are playing terrible. It seems that the Hoiberger didn’t give the Cyclones much of a boost either. The Purple Panthers are proving again that they are the best college men’s team in Iowa. I hope they can pull it off against

Louisville, but I have to send this before that game is over.

I was shocked that both Cyclone teams were bounced early. At least the Hawkeyes won one game, but at halftime it appears that they are finished.

The big news is that the Hawkeye Women are in the Sweet Sixteen and that tickles me. The Lady Hawks play the game flat out and they will fire from anywhere. They truly live by the three and die by the three as their inside game is not too strong. They may not go much further as Baylor is the opponent and the Lady Bears are tough. Again I must comment on the NCAA handling of the site selection of the tournament.

Iowa and Gonzaga are assigned to the South region and they play in Seattle, which is in Gonzaga’s back yard. Absurd!

The Des Moines Register and INA all-state teams have been announced and not many players in our area were named. Only Levi Jungling of Pella Christian and Issac Naaktgeboren of Pella were selected. In Class 2-A, Jungling was second team on the INA unit and third team on the Register crew. Naaktgeboren had the same positions except it was Class 3-A. There is one other thing that I must weigh in on. That is the phony lawsuit the Des Moines Water Works is serving on counties to their north. Come on Des Moines, you have been sending your sewage down to us for years. I suspect that more nitrates go into the Des Moines River from lawn fertilizer applied in the city than anything else. This is a sham.

It is time again to see what happened

After moving to What Cheer I had many opportunities to visit with a lady, Nellie Marie Tinsley from What Cheer.

She resided in the Manor House in Sigourney the last few years of her life.

Mrs. Tinsley had been someone I had looked up to as a child and all through my adulthood. She was my 7th grade teacher, and taught me various subjects from 9th through 12th grades. She also was my Sunday School teacher from 6th grade through 12th grade at the Christian Church in What Cheer. Soon after moving back to my hometown, Mrs. Tinsley said, “Janie, you can call me Nellie Marie.” Somehow, that was not an easy request, however I managed to do it a few times as she neared the end of her life. She had spent many years encouraging me and I felt it was a blessing to have opportunity to be an encouragement to her life. I saved many of her letters and rereading them is a blessing to me now. On April 12, 2009, I wrote

today. I’ve not forsaken a single soul, as you can plainly see, I’ve been faithful to you, Jane, whenever you’ve turned to me.” I answered, “Yea, Lord even when things looked so dreary and dim and I’ve turned from you and followed any old path on a whim, Yet, you were always there bidding me as a child to come, You were always there waiting for me to turn to your dear Son.” My Father answered, “You are right, Jane, I’ve done it for you but not you only, I’ve patiently waited for sinners who have been lost, failed and for the lonely. I bid each to come to me, the God of their childhood, yea, to a Father who has always loved and understood. I and my Son, who loves and faithfully cares, will guide, direct and patiently remove all fears. Tell the souls you see today, I’m waiting for their call.

My Son in Heaven awaits, for I keep feet from fatal falls. So, come one, come all, with repentance you will surely see, My Son’s blood offers eternal salvation, which gives you victory. I promise... you are not only going to survive, but

100 years ago: Mar. 21, 1915- The state champion Ottumwa Basketball team left today for Freeport, Illinois to take on the Illinois State champs. Ottumwa won the game 36-29.

75 years ago: Mar. 24, 1940- Barnes City beat Deep River 26-17 in a playoff to decided the English Valley Conference champion. Alvin Eisele led BC with 10 points.

50 years ago: Mar. 26, 1965- Bill Van Zante of Pella was named second team all state by the IDPA. 25 years ago: Mar. 28, 1990- William Penn Softball opened at home with a 9-1 and 7-3 sweep of Graceland.

Cherlyn Hullinger and Shelly Werling pitched the wins for Penn. Mar. 31- The Penn Baseball team swept Simpson 5-1 and 8-1. Todd Habel and Jeff Lindsay pitched the wins and Doug Koester belted five hits.

Have a great week and keep on thinking spring. We might even get in a few track meets this week.

Ponderings of the Heart this poem and shared it with her and as Easter approaches once again, I would like to share it with you. I call it, “Easter Morning.”

I woke ever so early this beautiful Easter morn. I softly prayed, “Father, help this world today...it’s so torn.” While I prayed, I began to hear the birds singing sweetly outside, and my heart yearned to continue and upon God to simply confide. Then I heard His voice begin to speak in a low, still small sort of way, And to my expectant heart and hearing ears he had much to convey, His words spoke ever so gently and so plainly to me, “My child, I’ve made it plain for you and all to see...No one needs to dwell in worldly toil and strives, for I sent my Son to mend all your lost and undone lives. My invitation is made for all mankind to answer my call, and my outstretched arms are open to all! Man says, the economy has ceased to thrive, and he merely is getting by to survive.

But I say, man has simply lost his way, I bid him to return and call upon me

in my Kingdom, you will continually thrive.” I opened my eyes to begin this Easter day with a smile on my face and I knew what I would say, “My friends, God is in his rightful place, and yes, he still loves the human race! I shall never forget on that Easter afternoon of April 12, 2009, after I read this poem to my teacher, she said, “Thank you, Jane, you are not only my student, but you are my friend!” All I could answer was, “Thank you, Mrs. Tinsley, I mean Nellie Marie!” With that said, I will close and wish you a most wonderful Easter Day celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Hey, maybe I will see you in Church! At the What Cheer Baptist Church, worship starts promptly at 10:30 a.m. May God bless you abundantly.

Other stores besides the groceries mentioned last week included Lambert and Vernon, and then Vernon bought J.C. Reed.

My mother also told of remembering that the Stout and Stought became Stought and Whisler and much later, Delta Mercantile. That was owned and operated by Eli Whisler, John Hasty and Ernest Kiester. Its location was on the west side of the town’s main street (today it would be the vacant space on the west side). Today the buildings north of this space are where a hardware store was located and the last post office adjacent on the north side.

The hardware store in this location had several changes of ownership and at one time there was a second hardware store. It was owned and operated by the Dunn Brothers. I remember asking my mother if there were other stores and she remembered a Wallace Gibson who was an undertaker as well as owning a furniture store.

She said he later sold it to H.R. Boldoser. Then I remember her saying there was a man who had a peg leg and whas known by his nickname of “Wash” and his last name was Wilson. Then a special memory mother had was having built and “operated” an ice cream parlor located across the alley west of the Farmer’s Union Store. Then mother said he sold 5 and 10 cent dishes of ice cream and there was always a cookie served with it.

A family by the name of Sar-

gent had a blacksmith shop. There was also a second blacksmith, Ed Hankins, who also led the Delta band. I remember in my early childhood my father playing the bass drum there. I recall when Ernest Farmer was the blacksmith and it was fascinating to watch him doing his work.

Several years ago when a disastrous fire destroyed a drug store, barber shop, meat market and other businesses on the East side of Main Street, I remember mother telling me of a large fire that destroyed the Kinder Hotel located in the area to the North, or todays main street. She also said that, at that period of time there was no fire whistle or any kind of fire-fighting equipment. She also remembered when there was a fire someone would ring a bell. For a bad fire the church bells and school bell were rung and everyone, men and women, would grab a bucket and run to the scene of the fire and form a bucket brigade.

Today and on this same side of Main Street is a vacant car-wash building. Prior to it’s being at this site there was a service or gas station. In remembering this I can recall when the vacant Champlain Station was operating as was a Home Oil Station on the South side of the street leading East from it. This station also had an Ice House. To the South of the vacant carwash is the former Gatewood Garage, that is now the active “Neighbors”, that serves delicious food and weekly entertainment.

Delta News June Rice The Delta Christian Church bi-monthly board meeting was held following church on March 15th in the church sanctuary.

‘Forgiven and Forgotten’ was the meditation lead by Laurel Streigle. Chairperson, Laurel Streigle called the meeting to order. The financial secretary and treasurers’ reports were given and approved.

Unfinished business and new business were discussed. The meeting was adjourned. Members were reminded to sign the schedule for the March 28th prayer vigil at the church. Sunday worship is at 9:00 and everyone is welcome.

Henry Goetz is at home recuperating from hip replacement surgery. He is gaining in strength and mobility, being enhanced by his

therapy.

Lenten Bible study continues at the Delta Methodist Church on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

Pastor Vince Homan is leading the study using the guide, “The GOD We Can Know”. Each study includes a short interesting and picturesque DVD of the Holy Land related to the lesson. The study will conclude during Holy Week. Delta Methodist will host a Maundy Thursday service on April 2 at 7:00 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

Roller Hockey in the Delta gym is still rolling. The games are at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The Jr. High League tournament will be March 30 and 31, ending the 2015 season.

The High School league plays April 1 and 3. Come and watch these fast paced games.

Sure seems nice to have some warmer weather. The snow really melted fast. It made the roads soupy. A truck had quite a time on our road. Hopefully we will get gravel soon. Tuesday I went with Kenny to Grinnell to shop at Thiesen’s. We came home for lunch. Carol and Steve Rauch came and brought my pan back. I make cole slaw in it a bunch.

Steve Rauch’s birthday is March 11 and he spent it with his daughter, Jessica. His son Steve’s birthday was the 8th.

I haven’t done much this week.

Pam Flanders was under the weather so she didn’t feel like our usual outing. Her little grandson that she sits with, Jordan, was also sick, so they both had it. I got some cookbooks when I went with Kenny for his appointment and have been going over them. I also got a dog book by the Dog Whisper of TV. I watch Animal Planet and National Geographic a lot.

Pastor Michelle Williamson got her liver transplant late Thursday.

Tyler Gieger sang “In the Garden” and played his guitar for the special music at the United Church of Deep River Sunday. The Deep River American Legion held a breakfast at the Community Center Sunday morning. The benefit held Saturday evening for Gwen Cheney went well.

Recipe of the Week: Easter Cake 1 box cherry cake mix 1 container cherry frosting coconut green food coloring jelly beans Follow directions on box to make cake. Use angel food cake pan.

Grease and flour lightly. Bake, following direction n box. Make sure cake is completely cooled before removing from pan. Tint coconut: Use several drops of food coloring to 1 c. coconut, stirring together for a grass green appearance.

Frost cake from ready made cherry frosting. Lightly fill hole of cake and small surrounding area with coconut. Place jelly beans on top, making it look like a small nest.

With the remaining coconut, press lightly around bottom edge of cake.

Senior Spotlight!

State Speech at CR Kennedy CEDAR RAPIDS - On Saturday, March 14, 22 Tri County “speechers” travelled to Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids to participate in state competition. It was a great day for TC, with 20 out of 27 performances receiving overall ratings of “I” from three judges. Additionally, six performers will be going on to All State Speech on Monday, March 30 at UNI. Megan Striegel moved on in Original Oratory, Trevor Clemens in Acting, Skyler Fisher in Acting, Abbey Hartwig in Storytelling, Myrissa Garber in Prose, and Kelsey Towns in Poetry. Being selected for All State is a great honor, as only the top 5% of all state speech performances make it.

Congratulations to all of the TC Speechers! It has been a very successful season for everyone involved, and we are looking forward to seeing what next year will bring!

THORNBURG - This week’s Senior Spotlight is Isaiah Ahlberg. Isaiah is the son of Jim Ahlberg and Sandi Terrell. He has 3 sisters and 1 brother, Breanna, Jessica, Teresa, and Brandon. Isaiah lives in Keswick, and his favorite color is brown. He loves to eat pizza while watching his favorite shows, Fast and Loud. Isaiah’s favorite thing to is riding four-wheelers.

Isaiah’s favorite thing about Tri-County is it’s easy to get work done and he will miss some of the teachers.

His favorite school lunch is chili. When asked to give advice to underclassmen, Isaiah said “Get your work done!” His favorite quote is “Expect the unexpected.”

After high school Isaiah plans to be a welder. Isaiah was asked, if he won the lottery, what would he do? His response was “I would buy my siblings something very nice. Then I would build a big house. Buy a few vehicles and then I would put the rest of the money away.” Good Luck, Isaiah!

Movie Review

by Alexis Leer I am reviewing the movie How to Train your Dragon 2. It is a movie about a village that has trained dragons to be there pets and all the villagers ride dragons.

Hiccup goes out and ends up finding his mom she lives with dragons.

There is going to be a war going on because some guy is fighting dragons. In the end, the good wins over evil, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Riley is a Freshman at TriCounty. This is Riley’s first year in Publications. Some of her projects she has been working on is the 2014-2015 Yearbook and her Articles for every week. Riley likes Publications because it gives her a chance to work on our schools yearbook and making it look good. She enjoys the class she is in and the teacher of course! She is looking forward to seeing the Yearbook completed and published! Riley’s favorite memory is when Myrissa and Lexie sing their karaoke in class. Her favorite quote is, “ You can’t have a better tomorrow, if you don’t stop thinking about yesterday.” Thank you for all your hard work in making the school yearbook look good and creating articles for the paper each week!

THORNBURG - There are many clubs and organizations at Tri-County.

This week we are looking at iStep. iStep stands for “Iowa Student Tobacco Education Prevention.” The purpose of iStep is to educate students about how bad tobacco is for them, and to encourage their parents and others to stop smoking. iStep does a bunch of little projects; for example they go to summits, have a scavenger hunt, talk to the lower elementary about smoking prevention, and has coloring contest. When asked about why students should join iStep, their sponsor Mrs. Bickmeier said “To help people prevent cancer, to encourage others, and the kids just like to help out.” We went around and asked some of the members what their favorite part of iStep was and here are their responses: Trish Hartwig - “Help people stop smoking, and it’s fun,” Audeana Finch - “Teach people about smoking and plan out all the events,” Tori Hartwig - “Trips and help other people stop smoking,” Jenna Accord - “The events,” Sydney Schultz - “Gets to yell at her family about smoking.” iStep is a great way to help your friends and family stop smoking.

FFA Spotlight

by Myrissa Garber THORNBURG- This week’s FFA Spotlight is Megan Striegel. Megan is a Senior at Tri-County. She has been involved in FFA for 4 years. She is our Chapter’s President. Some of Megan’s FFA Projects and Events she has been to are State and National Convention, Soil Judging, Environthon, Creed Speaking, Ag Broadcasting, Public Speaking, which this year she advanced onto State in. She has been a FFA Grandstand Usher, shown sheep, and has been on a Ag Communications Team. Megan says that FFA is not just Sows and Plows, FFA prepares young people to be ready for their future. “I highly recommend everyone to be a part of this great organization”, Megan says. Megan is looking forward to competing in prepared Public Speaking and receiving her Iowa degree at this State Convention. Before that, having an awesome FFA banquet and getting new officers for next year. The best thing that has happened to Megan this year is advancing on to State for the first time ever. Thank you for all the hard work you do in FFA for our Chapter and Community! Good Luck in College Megan!

What Cheer City Council Minutes City Council Minutes Regular Meeting Tuesday March 10th 2015 The What Cheer City Council met in regular session at City Hall Tuesday March 10th 2015.

Mayor Mike Danner called the meeting to order at 7:pm. Council Members answering roll call were: Merrill D. Decker (Rabbi), Joe Linder, Max Gragg Jr., Chris Terrell and Lorrie Hartwig. Sigourney Elementary Roller Hockey Concludes 2015 Season

Sigourney Roller Hockey elementary league finished their 2015 season on March 12. Awards for accomplishments during the season were given to: Nate Schuster for Highest Scorer with 37 goals; Julia Van Ee won Goalie of the Year with three goals scored against her all year, and the coaches awarded Xander Bell the Sportsmanship Award.

Tristan Bell, LDL, came out ready to win, scoring 5 goals in the first period with assistance from his teammate, Trey Shafranek, adding 2 goals, they eneded the first period with 7 goals. Sellers Racing was kept in the game with 2 goals from Nick Goad and 1 from Ian TerFehn. Maddie Schwenke came out with a quick goal in the first 15 seconds of the second period for Sellers and teammate Ian TerFehn followed 15 seconds after with another goal. Trent Hendricks popped in a last second goal for Sellers ending the 2nd period with an addition of 5 goals.

Keokuk County Retired School Personnel The Keokuk County Retired School Personnel met at the Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney on Wednesday, March 18. A delicious lunch was served by the ladies of the church.

Following lunch, Sigourney Mayor Terry Hollingsworth and City Clerk Angie Alderson spoke to the group about the Lewis Memorial Fountain.

Terry discussed the various phases of work that are needing to be done on the fountain. Repair, computerization, and cement work around the perimeter were some of the topics he shared with the group. Angie discussed the fund raisers that have been done and will be done this year for the fountain.

The Sigourney High School Alumni have been contributing to the fountain fund with donations coming from various graduating classes. A challenge has been issued by the class of 1974 to see which class can raise the most money. So far over $5,000.00 has been received from the class challenges. $22,000.00 has been raised by the fund raisers but much more is needed. It will cost $90,000.00-$100,000.00 to complete all of the work on the fountain.

The fountain was built in 1940 and will celebrate its 75th anniversary this year.

Williams read the minutes of the October meeting. Minutes were approved as read. Phyllis Clingan gave the Treasurer’s Report. It was approved. More information will be presented from the Scholarship Committee at the April meeting. Memorial books will be purchased for the Sigourney Public Library in memory of former members Miriam Lawrence and Dolores Pfannebecker. Membership Chair Linda Crouse introduced Judy Erwin as a guest. Lois Romine suggested all members keep track of volunteer hours to turn in at the May meeting. Mr. Downing stated that our IPERS fund in Iowa is in good shape.

The District Meeting for Iowa Retired School Personnel will be in Burlington at the Pizzazz on May 6. Mr. Downing thanked the cooks for the wonderful meal. A collection will be taken up at this meeting and the next two meetings for the Lewis Memorial Fountain. Doris Conner won the Door Prize.

Preschool and Kindergarten Sign-Up for 2015-2016 School Year

Do you have a child ready to attend preschool or kindergarten in 20152016? If so please see the following information: The preschool parent meeting will be Monday, April 13 from at 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Paperwork will start right after the meeting and go until 7:15 p.m. In order for your child to attend preschool for the 2015-2016 academic year, s(he) must be age 4 or older by Sept. 15, 2015.

The kindergarten parent meeting will be Monday, April 13 from 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. Paperwork will start at 6:45 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. In order for your child to attend kindergarten for the 2015-2016 academic year, s(he) must be age 5 or older by Sept. 15, 2015.

These meetings are for parents of students who will be enrolled in preschool or kindergarten for the 20152016 academic year, there will not be childcare services available and the school asks that your children do not attend; they will have an opportunity to visit the classroom at a later time.

Kindergarten Round-Up will be Thursday, April 30 for the Tuesday/ Thursday group from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday, May 1 for the Wednesday/Friday group from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Round-up will take place during your child’s scheduled preschool day. Therefore, no special accommodations such as transportation or days off for either preschool

or kindergarten students will be necessary. At 3 p.m. Round-Up Day, preschool students will return to Miss Mindy’s room for normal dismissal procedures.

Pekin Preschool/Daycare Registration Pekin Preschool/Daycare will be having registration for the 2015-16 school year on Thursday, April 9 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the center. Anyone needing preschool must attend this registration. Children must be 4 years old by September 15, 2015. This registration is for parents only. The daycare will also be registering for summer and 2015-16 school year.

Please bring with you names, addresses and phone numbers of work places, doctor, dentist, hospital and emergency contacts as well as your child’s social security number and health insurance information. Allison Glandon The Keokuk County Board of Supervisors held their weekly meeting in the Board Room at the Keokuk County Courthouse Monday, March 23, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. The meeting began with the Keokuk County Highway Department. County Engineer Andy McGuire discussed the possible firms the Board could sign with for the inspection services of the upcoming Dakota Access Pipeline. 14 surrounding counties have been discussing hiring consultant firms to take care of inspections and signing letters of intent. Harper gave the Board updates on some of the new changes that will be happing with Sigourney Schools.

The partnership with Indian Hills Community College is going forward.

They will be moving all classes to the Career Academy located at the Sigourney High School. By moving all classes to this location, ICN upgrades are being done and there will be night classes available. Previously, classes were available at both the Career Academy and the Indian Hills-Keokuk County Center.

Harper also told the Board that they are now hiring two new teachers to add to the Sigourney High School staff. The teaching positions will start next year.

They are also looking to add a Transportation Director and a Food Service Manager.

Hedrick Community to Host Community Blood Drive

Race For The Cure Back After Year Long Hiatus In December the Susan G. Komen– Iowa organization which is based in Des Moines and the Susan G. Komen of Southeast Iowa organization joined forces bringing together the strengths and assets of both groups. Gayla Harrison, a recent board president of Komen Southeast Iowa, notes this will “allow volunteers to focus on the most important aspect of our work; translating the generosity of the people of southeast Iowa into funds for programs that will save lives and end breast cancer forever.” Having administrative support from Komen Iowa allows our local volunteers to focus on raising the funds to help end this disease that affects millions of people. Susan G Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization and since its inception has funded over $847 million dollars in research and 1.8 billion dollars for screening, education, treatment and psychosocial support for people affected by this disease.

Komen–Southeast Iowa has been actively raising funds each year by organizing the local Race for the Cure and other events. These funds from and used across a ten county area in southeast Iowa have helped women obtain mammography and other support services for those affected by breast cancer. These are our friends, neighbors and family. Komen-Iowa has funded over $5 million dollars for community breast cancer programs in a 91 county service area in Iowa. One of the major grant recipients has been the Iowa Department of Public Health – “Breast Cancer Screening for Iowa’s Under-

served, Low-Income Women”. This program alone has provided screening and diagnostic services to over 680 women providing access to mammography and other diagnostic services that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Given the unusually high rates of breast cancer in southeast Iowa being able to provide this type of service is of particular importance.

So after a year’s hiatus, Race for the Cure will be back in Ottumwa in 2015 on May 9th at Greater Ottumwa Park!

Veteran volunteers and new ones are preparing again to host this well-known event. It will include a timed 5-K race, a non-competitive 5-K Run/Walk, a 1 mile Fun Run/Walk and a Kids Fun Run. Local survivors will be honored at the event as well as hosting a Survivor luncheon in October in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month.

A new concept this year for this event will be encouraging teams to fund raise above and beyond their entry fees. Utilizing on-line registration through the Komen organization allows for teams to raise funds and to compete with other teams in fund raising. You will be able to track your team’s progress on-line. There will be team prizes in various categories to add to friendly rivalry. Be thinking about who you would like to challenge.

Sigourney Jr./Sr. High School Play Will Honor Veterans The Sigourney Jr./Sr. High School will put on their school play Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 beginning at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. This year they decided to pay tribute to veterans by doing the production M*A*S*H. Long hours and morning practices has got this group prepared for opening night. Below is an article written by Sigourney High School student, Nicole Hunter.

To show how much they truly appreciate our veterans the cast and director will host a Veteran’s Banquet dinner on Friday, March 27 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the high school library. The public is welcome to come and veterans eat for free! They will be serving an all American cuisine dinner. Show your appreciation and join us at the banquet.

By Nicole Hunter, Sigourney Jr./Sr. High School Sigourney Jr./ Sr. High’s latest play production is M*A*S*H, in honor of our veterans who have put their life on the line to keep our country free and safe.

This play is different from prior years due to the difference in production, less curtain pulls and set changes. The struggle with this play is finding the correct color of fatigues. It’s more difficult with this play to find the correct attire for the time period due to people having it stored away or they no longer have them. Some of the uniforms that will be featured in the play have been donated and others have been rented. Kelly Mousel, director, says, “That’s what makes the play so special is that people who are allowing them to use uniforms of family members who have passed away.”

The two major challenges with this play is having the pacing of it be correct along with the correct sound effect. The school has received a new sound system.

“It isn’t easy having 6:00 a.m. practices every morning but the awesome cast and director make it so much fun, and I know it will pay off on opening night!” - Katie Dillon “I think this play will be a lot of fun. We have a large cast full of characters, and it should be a very entertaining and funny show.” - Will Magill “The play is a lot of work. You have to get up early, know your parts, and work together as a team. But all that work pays off because you create so many fun memories and the productions are rewarding.

Dr. Kevin de Regnier Inaugurated as 62nd ACOFP President Kevin V. de Regnier, DO, FACOFP dist., of Winterset, was inaugurated as the President of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians on Saturday, March 14, 2015, during ACOFP’s 52nd Annual Convention & Scientific Seminars, which was held March 12-15 in Las Vegas.

Kevin V. de Regnier, DO, FACOFP dist., is a board-certified family physician in private practice with Madison County Medical Associates of Winterset, Iowa.

He is a 1975 graduate of Sigourney High School and is the son of Dick and Bev de Regnier of Sigourney.

He is an adjunct professor of family medicine at Des Moines University and in 2001 he was recognized with the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award. He was the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association Physician of the Year in 2000.

Dr. de Regnier has been a member of the ACOFP Board of Governors since 2006, and during the

past decade has served on many ACOFP committees, including the Committee on Federal Legislation, the Preceptor Committee, and the Policy and Organizational Review Committee. Prior to his service with the ACOFP, he served as President of both the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association and the Iowa State Society of the ACOFP. His professional interests include diabetes care and education, osteopathic manipulative medicine and geriatrics. Dr. de Regnier constantly strives to provide his patients with the highest quality of care. He was the first in his area to offer in-office testing for diabetes monitoring, bone density testing, and allergy testing and treatment.

An Iowa native, Dr. de Regnier earned a B.A. in Chemistry with a biology minor from the University of Northern Iowa. He received is Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des

Local students are getting a free education in how to manage their money. MidWestOne Bank is working with Banzai, a national award-winning financial literacy program, to make curriculum available to North English, Thornburg and Sigourney schools completely free.

“Banzai is a web-based financial literacy program. Kids get their own accounts, and they work through assignments that are based on real life,” Morgan Vandagriff, co-founder of Banzai, said. “But because MidWestOne Bank is sponsoring it, local schools get it for free. More than ever, it’s important that kids develop sound financial skills to prepare them for the real world, and MidWestOne Bank realizes that and they’re doing something about it.”

Banzai is an interactive, online program supplemented by printed workbooks which aligns with state curriculum requirements for personal finance education. It has become the largest program of its kind, servicing more than 14,000 teachers in all 50 states.

MidWestOne Bank has offered time, money, industry experience,

and a variety of credit union resources to help North English, Thornburg and Sigourney schools teach personal finance in the classroom. Students using the program are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay bills and balance a budget-but it’s not always easy. Students must learn to manage unexpected expenses such as parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. The educational program also introduces students to auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs, savings and more.

“Too often students get out of school and they just aren’t ready for the financial roller coasters life can give us,” Vandagriff said. “Banzai teaches students to navigate those twists and turns and come out on top. We’re excited to work with MidWestOne Bank to improve financial literacy in North English, Thornburg and Sigourney.”

Seventeen Hats & More members and one guest, Judy Cartwright, sported their “Green” and met at the Java Lounge for their March 18 meeting. A St. Patrick theme was used on the tables, and the prizes were lovely scarves made by Helen Donahoe. The winners were Pat Denison, MaryAnn Fuller and Fran Pilkington.

After lunch the members traveled to the Tanger Outlet to the Dress Barn for a Style Show and refreshments. Several members were models for the beautiful clothes that Manager, Betty Maas helped us select. Helen Donohoe and Mary Jane O’Brien hosted this day.

AREA SPORTS All-State Honors Girls’ Hoops Postseason Awarded to Two Area Boys Honors Keep Rolling In Two area boys were recently awarded All-State honors for their performances throughout the 201415 high school basketball season.

Sigourney junior Matus Stevko earned 2nd-Team All-State honors

by Iowa Preps, while Keota’s Nate Owen, a senior, was named 3rdTeam by the same publication.

Stevko, who helped the Savages tally 18 wins this past season, averaged 18.4 points per game and made

45 3-pointers this year, while Owen, who led the Eagles to 12 wins, averaged 20 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

The high caliber of girls’ basketball played in the area this past season was made evident by the number of All-District selections.

Four area girls were named to their respective All-District squads, named by the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association.

In Class 1A’s Southeast region, Sigourney’s Sierra Davis (16.2 p.p.g.), English Valleys’ Rylee Voss (20 p.p.g.), and Keota’s Madison Sheetz (13 p.p.g.) were all awarded

All-District honors for their tremendous seasons.

In Class 2A, Pekin junior Beth Atwood (17.6 p.p.g.) was tabbed All-District as well.

Voss, along with Sigourney’s Jordan Carter, Keota’s Madison Sieren and EV’s Lauren Miller, will each get one last chance to showcase their talents on the court this weekend.

Tracksters Get First Warmup at SICL Indoor

Senior All Star Game. Voss and Carter were picked to play on the 1A Select Team, which will play against the 2A Select Team, while Miller and Sieren will team up on the 1A White Team and play 1A’s Gray Team.

The games will be played at Kirkwood Community College on Sunday, March 29, with Miller and Sieren’s team playing at noon, before Voss and Carter’s team follows, at 2pm.

Last Thursday marked the second annual South Iowa Cedar League Indoor track and field meet at Grinnell College.

All 11 of the SICL teams -- boys and girls -- met at the Charles Benson Bear Rec and Athletic Center on the campus of Grinnell College and laced up their spikes on the six-lane, 200-meter track.

Sigourney High School turned in perhaps the most impressive showing of any area school, coming away with one individual gold and a number of other high finishes.

Winning that individual gold was freshman Autum Barthelman, who won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 10.41 seconds. Barthelman also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Another Sigourney freshman, Brooke Waechter, came in third in the 400 with a time of 1:10.

Waechter, Barthelman, along with Sarina Gretter and Sierra Davis, made up Sigourney’s fourth-place 4x200 relay, which clocked in with a time of 2:01.

Other notable performers for the Savages were Allison Schroeder, who

placed 8th in the 60-meter hurdles, and Leah Carter, who placed 8th in the high jump.

Sigourney’s boys were paced by a fourth-place finish by Peyton Crawford in the shot put (40’ 2’’) and a fifth-place finish by Avery Moore in the long jump (18’ 7’’).

The crew of Crawford, Jordan Albert, Matus Stevko and Will Flanegin made up Sigourney’s third-place distance medley relay (4:21), while Tyler Crawford (9th) and Thomas Stout (10th) finished neck-and-neck in the 1600.

Keota got a second-place finish from Ben Horras (7.46 seconds) in the 60-meter dash and a sixthplace finish from Jacob Wickencamp (7.59).

Horras then placed fourth in the 200 later in the day, with a time of 24.65 seconds, while Nate Sieren placed seventh in 25.83 seconds.

Keota’s 4x200 meter relay of Sieren, Wickencamp, Zach Mousel and Horras came in second behind HLV, with a time of 1:41.53.

The Eagles also got a ninth-place finish from Luke Greiner in the 400 (59.95 seconds), along with Turner Klein’s sixth-place finish in the 800 (2:27) and seventh-place finish in the 1600 (5:21).

English Valleys’ day was highlighted with a first-place tie in the high jump by Kellan Coppinger, who tied with North Mahaska’s Cole Rozendaal at 5’10’’.

The EV girls were led by a fifthplace finish by Taylor Gerard in the 800 (3:01), and sixth-place finish by Hannah Greene in the 400 (1:12) and a sixth-place finish from Abby Westhoff in the 60-meter dash (8.97 seconds).

As for Tri-County, the Trojans reeled in a fourth-place finish in the distance medley. The crew of Allison Steinke, Emma Bair, Kristin Krumm and Riley Danner clocked in at 5:16.

Jacob Bombei notched a tenthplace finish in the 400-meter dash, running a time of one minute flat, while Walter McKay came in 12th at 1:01.91.

The Trojans also got a 13-place finish from Bombei in the 200-meter dash, while Dalton Ehret placed 17th and McKay finished 18th.

Luke Bombei threw well in the shot put, placing 14th, with a distance of 35’ 6.5’’.

The Keota boys compete at Washington on Thursday, in the only SICL action of the week, before EV, Sigourney and Tri-County all run at Pekin on Monday, March 30.
