NS Library book club to discuss book
On Monday, Jan. 26, North Mahaska FFA members attended the Legislative Symposium in Des Moines. The Legislative Symposium is designed to build character and promote citizenship, volunteerism and patriotism. Kevin Spoelstra, Maddie Weller, and Elizabeth Moore attended the event along with more than 300 members from across the state of Iowa. The young people gathered at the FFA Enrichment Center and State Capitol to learn about the leg-
islative process, discuss agricultural issues and promote Agricultural Education and FFA. After meeting with our local State Senator Ken Roozeboom and House of Representatives, the North Mahaska students toured the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates and learned about solving world hunger and some of the great agriculturalists from Iowa, such as Norman Borlaug.

North Mahaska School audit report released
Pella accounting firm of Van Maanen, Sietstra, Meyer & Nikkel, P.C., Certified Public Accountants released an audit report on the North Mahaska School District in New Sharon. The audit is for fiscal year July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014. The District’s revenues totaled $7,179,574 for the year ended June 30, 2014, a 0.5 percent increase from the prior year. Revenues included $2,992,196 in local tax; charges for service of $916,461; operating grants, contributions and restricted interest of $1,059,885; capital grants and contributions of $8,075; unrestricted interest of $1,240; and other general revenues of $2,201,717. Expenses for District operations totaled $6,614,923, a 0.7 percent decrease from the prior year. Expenses included $4,341,838 for instruction, $1,538,764 for support services and $734,321 for other expenditures. North Mahaska superintendent Randy Moffit said he was pleased with the audit report. While there was a small increase in revenues, coupled with the small decrease in expenses assisted in the favorable report. There was one noted deficiency in practice, but it is one that small organizations contend with. This report contained recommendations to the Board of Education and District officials. The report noted that with the limited number of administrative employees, segregation of duties necessary for adequate

By R.D. KEEP FREMONT – Ralph is “good” friend of Harold’s. Well, he would like to be anyway. The two college buddies meet again when Ralph comes looking for a favor. The favor comes with some potentially deadly consequences. So is the beginning of another Fremont Community Theatre production sponsored by the Fremont Lions Club. The show takes to the Fremont Elementary School stage Thursday, Feb. 12 through Sunday, Feb. 15. Show times are nightly at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Scott Bethune and Mindy Archer direct the production of “No Body
but Jimmy”. Both are long time members of the group and have a number of acting and directing credits. The show is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser. Ralph (Mark Hansen) rings the bell at Harold (Bill Ward) and his wife, Eloise’s (Martha Scharff) home on a day when Eloise is hosting a campaign fundraiser. Harold is not Eloise’s favorite person to have around and urges Ralph to get rid of him. Ralph in the house is bad enough, but then he brings in “Jimmy”. Jim-

Calling All 2015-2016 Preschoolers!
In January, the New Sharon Library book club held a different kind of discussion. Instead of reading the same book, the group brought their own “best recent reads” to introduce to the group. Each person had the opportunity to showcase one or more books that had sparked their interest. Many of those introduced reminded others of similar titles, so there were many new books for members to think about for future reading. Many types of books were mentioned; some that we had not been considered for group reading. After listening to lots of offerings, the group decided to explore a different kind of book for the February meeting. The group will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the library to discuss “SWORN TO SILENCE” by Linda Castillo. This is the first of a series by this author, which features a young woman, raised in the Amish tradition, who has become chief of police in an Ohio town in Amish country. Chief Kate Burkholder is called on to solve a particularly chilling murder. She uses her knowledge of the Amish ways to follow clues, but encounters

By R.D. KEEP NEW SHARON – In a quest for victories comes some rocky times and years when your team may not reach its potential. Those memories fade quickly when a coach reaches one of many pinnacles in a career. North Mahaska girls basketball coach L.E. Moore reached one of those coaching acmes recently when his team topped Montezuma. The victory was not only a win over a South Iowa Cedar League rival, but notched Moore’s 200th win. Moore has been coaching for more than 20 years, 14 of those as a head coach. He has been at the helm of at North Mahaska for seven years. He has served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, North Mahaska, took a coaching position and teaching job at Montezuma, before spending seven years guiding the Montezuma program for seven years. He returned to North Mahaska in 2008 as coach and began teaching at the school in 2010. Mike Huffman came on board as his assistant and the two have guided the program ever since. Along the way Moore’s teams have captured five conference titles, one at Montezuma and four at North Mahaska. His North Mahaska squads of 2010-11 and 2011-12 reached the state tour-
