Muller wins ‘Team Mom of the Year’ award

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — And the national USA Football Team Mom of the Year is … Grundy Center’s Somer Muller.

After more than two months of voting and judging, Muller was announced as the national Team Mom of the Year late last week. Muller, the team mom for her husband Scott’s team in the Grundy Center Football League learned she had won last Wednesday after asking when results would be announced.

“I was sitting at work and I sent them an e-mail because I knew I was going to church and knew Pastor Phil (Dicks) was going to ask,” she said. “I said ‘Can I just know when you guys are going to release the winner?’ The guy sent me an e-mail back that said ‘We’re going to release it this afternoon, but you’re the grand prize winner — congratulations.’

“I was a little shocked,” she said.

“I was sitting with my co-worker and I slapped her in the arm and she’s like ‘Excuse me’ and I was like, ‘I won.’ She’s my best friend so it was cool for her to share that with me, and then I called Scott my husband right away. I was like ‘You guys can’t tell anybody, but I won.’”

The award culminates a contest that began with 10 weeks of preliminary competition. Muller came from behind in the final day to win thanks to a push to get more votes.

“We did campaigning on Facebook,” she said. “I would vote and then you could share that you voted with 10 people, so I would do that.

Then every time I voted I thanked people. The Aplington-Parkersburg football team all voted, I said thank you to them, and I know Gladbrook-Reinbeck did, Marshalltown’s football team did …”

Somer also got help from Grundy Center, where students would vote for her each day. On the final day of weekly competition, Scott contacted all of his friends asking them to vote and pass on the request to others.

The Grundy Register sat down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with the one and only Santa Claus prior to his Christmas Eve journey to deliver gifts to good little girls and boys.

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register NORTH POLE — Santa Claus is all about tradition. Beginning each November and through December, he makes millions of stops throughout the world to visit good boys and girls and find out what they want for Christmas.

And while Santa declined to share many of his secrets, he did shed light on what it is like to be the one-andonly jolly St. Nick and the night before Christmas.

“First of all I get my suit, make sure it’s ready, and I feed the reindeer and make sure everything is in the right place,” he said.

Santa said he spends a lot of Christmas Eve taking a long nap so he’s ready for his long journey ahead.

The journey will take him from the North Pole all over the world and to millions of homes where good girls and boys are waiting.

“It’s the very best night of the year,” he said.

Santa also shed light on what children are wanting for Christmas this year. He said the majority of kids are asking for electronic toys and gadgets — cell phones, computers and hi-fi items. He said girls still ask for dolls and a lot of boys want tractors and farm equipment like they see their dads use.

How Santa gets all over the world in a single night is one of the secrets Santa wouldn’t share, though he hinted that it could be magic.

“If I told you how I did it you would tell everybody else, so I’m not going to tell you,” he said.

“I do it very carefully,” he said.

All night long, Santa and his reindeer will feast on milk, cookies and the occasional carrots or apples.

“I like chocolate chip cookies and a glass of milk and a candy cane,” he said.

Santa warned, however, that children should be sure to go right to sleep on Christmas Eve if they want him to visit.

“Most of the houses I visit have a hallway or a room where people can wait, and if there’s somebody standing in the window I move on to another house,” he said.

Santa said he spends most of his time studying the list of good boys and girls, He said he has never once had a child tell him they should be on the naughty list.

“I can tell,” he said. “I’ve never met one that was really bad.”

No matter how hard he tries, Santa said he can’t answer the wishes for everything that every child wants each year.

“Santa Claus and the elves can only make so many things, but we try to get every little boy or girl a present,” he said.

After all the presents are delivered and all the milk and cookies eaten, Santa returns to the Santa Claus City at the North Pole. Though only Santa himself knows exactly where the city is, he said it is there to be found.

“All you have to do is look in the right place,” he said.

Madrigal Singers brighten holiday for local seniors

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — It was a sound that brought smiles to even the most cynical faces. Thursday the Grundy Center High School Madrigal Singers made their annual trip to sing for the local retired community, making stops at Arlington Place, the Grundy Care Center and the Grundy Community Center.

“It’s fun to go out there and let people hear us and see what we can do,” senior Melanie Homeister said.

The Madrigal group, which consists of 19 students, performed numbers such as Christmas classics “Mary Did You Know?” and “Ding.”

Homeister said one of the highlights of singing these Christmas pieces is the opportunity to do them a cappella.

“Singing without the piano is fun

to do — you get to hear all the different parts,” she said. “I really enjoy it just because you can hear everyone.”

Senior Chris Siefken said the joy of going to the retirement communities is watching the residents eyes light up as they sing.

“Sometimes you see the look on people’s faces and it brightens up their day,” he said. “At Arlington this is something new to them so you see it in their faces and it warms your heart.”

“I think it’s fun (to sing the Christmas music),” Homeister added. “Just being with all these guys is really fun.”

The Madrigal group made two other appearances for Christmas, singing at College Square Mall in Cedar Falls Saturday and in the annual GCHS Christmas Vocal Music Concert Monday.

Grundy County Fair receives ‘Blue Ribbon’ award School Board approves Safe Room change order

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Fair, held in Grundy Center, has been awarded the 2014 Blue Ribbon Fair Award by the Board of Directors of the Association of Iowa Fairs.

The award was presented to the Fair’s Board of Directors at the Association’s 2014 Conference and Annual Meeting, which was held Dec. 12-14 in Des Moines. The Grundy County Fair was chosen to receive the award from all the fairs in the Association’s North Central District.

“One member Fair in each of the Association’s six fair districts in Iowa is presented this award each year,” said Thomas Barnes, Executive Director of the Association.

“The fair that receives this award must have shown progress in pro-

viding service to the youth programs in their community, plus show dis-

tinguished service the community in both fair and non fair areas. My wife Sue and I have visited the Grundy County Fair several times and we found it does indeed serve very well the community as outlined in the guidelines of this award.

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — Though the Tornado Safe Room at Grundy Center Junior-Senior High School has been in use throughout the school year, final paperwork for the project is still being completed.

Last Wednesday the Grundy Center School Board approved a change order for the construction while also approving a Certificate of Substantial Completion.

The change order was for $18,954 to be deducted from payments to Cardinal Construction due to damage to roads and sidewalks surrounding the new facility during construction. The motion passed without substantial discussion.

More conversation surrounded the Certificate of Substantial Completion, as Superintendent Jerry Schutz noted that several small items were still not satisfactorily completed. After several minutes of discussion, the Board opted to approve the certificate, as it will set the date that the warrantee on the building will begin, though it instructed Schutz to not pay the final payment for construction until everything is complete.

On a related note, the Board voted to accept the Operations and Maintenance Plan for the Tornado Safe Room, which provides local law enforcement with a list of contacts who can open the room in the event of an emergency. In addition to the district superintendent and Junior-Senior High administrators, the district’s maintenance director and nurse were also listed. In addition, local law enforcement will also have keys to access the facility in the event of an emergency.

Also on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting was the review of Board Policies in the 100, 200, 300, 400, 800 and 900 series, which have been extensively reviewed and brought up to current policies. Director Brent Ascher, who has worked

extensively on the revisions, recommended that the Board table action on accepting the policies until they could be reviewed during a Board work session. The first of what could be multiple work sessions to review the changes will be held Jan. 14.

The Board also approved the upcoming retirements of Elementary Principal Lisa Miller, fifth-grade teacher Andrea Doubet and the resignation of varsity volleyball coach Darwin Sents.

The Board approved renewing a CD with Green Belt Bank and Trust for 13 months at 1.01 percent.

Miller said the school is attempting to be proactive in its approach teaching under new legislative rules.

She said the building is seeing strong results from its new Reading Recovery Program and is attempting to add intervention pieces to that program.

She said Green Belt Bank and Trust will be coming to the school early in 2015 to talk to students in kindergarten through second-grade that align with the Iowa Core math standards.

Secondary Principal Ann Lebo was introduced as Dr. Lebo for the first time, as she recently completed her doctor of education work.

Speaking for Activities Director Rollie Ackerman, Lebo said, because of its facilities, Grundy Center continues to get opportunities to host events such as postseason sports that many other districts do not get. The latest opportunity announced for the school will come in May, when it will host the Class 1A Large Group Music Festival.

GCHS Spanish Teacher Darrin Patterson spoke about an upcoming travel opportunity for students while Kari Geiter, Tara Liston, Lindsey Aronson, Phil Laube and Dr. Clay Edwards spoke to the Board about the district’s math curriculum.

Mary Jane (Steege) North

Mary Jane (Steege) North, 74 of Holland passed away Monday December 15, 2014 at the Grundy Center Care Facility with her family by her side. Any cards of condolences can be sent to the North’s residents at 21784 210th st. Holland, IA. Mary Jane was born on October 30, 1940, on a farm near Waverly. She is the daughter Raymond and Doretta Steege.

Mary Jane married Russell North at the St. John's LCMS in Waverly on June 5, 1960. Mary Jane and Russell had 3 children, Byron, Raejean and Kurt.

As she worked for several businesses in the Cedar Valley area, Mary Jane retired from Matt Parrot & Sons. Her and Russell lived in Holland for the past 25 years. She served as the mayor of Holland for 6 of those years.

Mary Jane was a current member of the St Johns Lutheran Church in Wellsburg.

Mary Janes favorite pastimes was spending time with family and friends.

She will be dearly missed.

Bob Weseman

Bob Weseman, 64, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away of natural causes on December 17, 2014, in Oklahoma. He was born on July 25, 1950, son of George K. and Edith (Kramer) Weseman.

Bob grew up in the Grundy Center area and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1968. After school, he helped on the family farm and also enjoyed driving truck, both locally and over the road for many years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edith; and brother, Jim. Survivors include his father, George Weseman of Grundy Center; sisters ,Joan (Dayne) Rose of Waterloo, Judi (Duane) Gifford of New Hartford and sister-in-law, Marj Weseman of Cedar Falls.

Santa confessed, however, that it is not always the real Santa that children see when they visit him.

“Santa Claus needs helpers,” he said.

The only way to know if the Santa you see is the real Santa Claus, he said, is a simple tug on his beard.

“That makes me feel good — the children’s eyes get really big!” he said.

Santa said he has a special connection to Grundy Center, a place so special that his daughter and son-inlaw live here.

In fact, Santa’s son-in-law filled in for him this year when Santa couldn’t make it for his annual weekend after Thanksgiving visit.

“It’s a nice community,” he said.

“The people are very nice. Even the people who don’t come to see Santa thank me for coming.”

So hang your stocking and say your prayers, because Santa Claus comes tonight.

The next step was creating a video that would be judged to determine the final winner. Somer didn’t want to just sit in front of the camera and talk, so she invited friends and family to do the talking for her.

“I said, ‘Just send me little 10, 15 second clips — I sent that to all my friends and players on the team, and then we asked Pastor Phil and a couple of school board members caught wind of it and they decided they wanted to help out, too,” she said.

The result was an 11-minute video … that had to be edited to five minutes.

“So we took some of them and did voiceovers with some pictures and the articles from the newspapers, so I was able to use a part of everybody’s video — it was pretty awesome,” she said.

Final results were supposed to be released Dec. 12 but were delayed as a final decision was reached.

Though Somer won the contest, her husband and son Kolby’s team gets the biggest award — $5,000 in equipment credit from manufacturer Riddell. Somer said the team will get new concussion-resistant helmets and football pants with pads sewn inside. Somer also receives a $500 gift certificate for a spa treatment and a $100 gift certificate to Sports Authority.

“And I get a football jersey that says ‘Team Mom of the Year.’ That will be pretty cool,” she said.

“I’m really excited — this is a national award,” Somer said. “I was the only finalist on this side of the Mississippi (River). Then I won the whole thing which was really cool.”

Kling Memorial Library to close for carpet installation

GRUNDY CENTER — The Kling Memorial Library in Grundy Center will be closed the first three days of 2015 to allow for the installation of new carpeting.

According to Library Director Molly Mauer, the library will be closed Dec. 31 as well as Jan. 1-3.

The library will reopen Monday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m., with all services expected to be available, though installation work will continue.

The library will also be closing at noon on Christmas Eve, December 24.

GCMH to host pulmonary support group

GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH) will host the Grundy Area Pulmonary Support Group on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Education Room. Please use Entrance No. 3 on the west side of the hospital.

Of the 52 newspapers we publish each year, our Christmas edition is my favorite. It’s a paper where we drop some of the common rules and let our hair down a little bit. That runs from our front page, which looks unlike any other we put together all year, to our special Holiday Greetings section.

I love the fact that this year’s Christmas edition actually falls on Christmas Day ... what could be better!

We got it out a day early so you could read our greetings before heading out to see family, but with Christmas on a Thursday, we actually date it Dec. 25.

I take a lot of personal pride in our Christmas edition simply because it’s one that I successfully transformed into something that’s become popular not only with us, but also with you. It had always been a nice edition, but the editorial content really wasn’t anything

By JOHN JENSEN special. Maybe the editor wrote a nice column and had a Christmas-themed lead story, and we might have had a few letters to Santa that kids submitted, but that was about it.

The Santa Letter section was something we did in my first place of employment in Washington. There we worked with the local schools to collect letters that we would print. So the first Christmas I was here, I approached Mrs. Miller at Grundy Center Elementary about seeing if her kids would be interested. A little to my surprise, she thought it would be a great idea. And after the reaction to the project from you, our readers, I realized we had something. The following year we expanded the project to Dike-New Hartford’s elementary kids and this year we included all of the local preschools. This year’s section features 250 letters, which is the most we’ve ever had. And we have one or two other schools that we might invite to be part of the section next year.

Thanks to all who make this section possible, particularly our advertisers without whose support we would not be here. Thanks also to principals Lisa Miller in Grundy Center, Tom Textor in Dike and the local preschools for sharing their kids’ letters with us.

• • • Because this paper came out on Christmas eve (and is dated Christmas day), I felt like we needed something really fun for the front page. Keeping with the Santa theme, I felt like this would be a good year to dig deep into my bag of tricks and pull one out that I hadn’t used since Washington — the interview with Santa Claus.

It’s extremely rare for us to do stories that are not based on fact in the newspaper. In the 20-plus years I’ve worked for various papers I can think of two before this. The occasion has to be right and the story has to be wellintentioned. We did an April Fool’s Day paper in Oelwein once and the other was the aforementioned interview with Santa in Washington, where a man billed himself as the “Real Santa Claus.”

This year I found Grundy Center’s traditional Santa — the gentleman who has played the part here for most of the past 20 years — and asked if I could interview him in character. To be honest, it’s a fairly tough interview. I almost have to play a character I’m not, which is that of a fiction writer. I confess that I even made up some of the content for the story (beyond Santa’s answers) — that’s something that’s nothing short of unethical ... but for this one occasion I hope you’ll let it slide.

The Santa interview isn’t something I see us doing every year, though I could see doing it every time Christmas falls on a Thursday. I hope it’s a story you enjoy.

• • • This seems like as good a time as any to announce that at 44 years old, I still believe in Santa Claus. No, I realize that the jolly old elf living the North Pole is the world’s most wonderfully orchestrated scam. The fact is, however, that Santa personifies the spirit of Christmas. And while it is important to remember that Christmas is truly about celebrating the birth of the Christ child, it is also important to remember the fun of the season. That’s what I remember from when I was a child and that’s what I like to bring to those around me.

years have started doing that again in my weekly column. Last year I even received one of the far-fetched things I asked Santa to bring me — LeBron James on my favorite pro basketball team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

So without further ado ...

Dear Santa, I have been good this year ... well, maybe not good, but sort of good ... or kind of good ... OK, I admit it, I was rotten more often than not. Live with it.

I called my mom and dad when I was supposed to, but probably not enough, and sometimes made it to work on time. I have tried to treat others like I would hope to be treated myself but wasn’t always very good at it. I even cut back on junk food and lost some weight, Santa.

Thank you, Santa, for bringing LeBron James back home to Cleveland. I know that was a tough one, but we Cleveland fans deserved something good.

Now if you could please bring Johnny Manziel some talent and Nick Swisher some plate discipline we might be on our way to something I’ve never seen — a sports championship for C’town.

This would be a good time to ask for peace on Earth and things like that, but I figure you get enough requests for those already. So let’s get to the really important stuff.

I know I asked for this last year Santa, but please again bring me good feature ideas ... things I can turn into stories that our readers will enjoy. And please bring me more interesting hard news stories to write about ... this year had its share, but there is always more. Please, too, bring me a few great photo opportunities and the wisdom to have the lens cap off the camera when they happen. Please also bring our local high school sports teams even more success ... winning never gets old.

Finally, Santa, please bring me the patience to be positive, the wisdom to be stern when I need to be but not overbearing and continued improvement to my health.

Thank you, Santa.

By JERRY SCHUTZ Superintendent, Grundy Center Community School District Special to The Grundy Register During this holiday season I would like to underscore my appreciation for the passion with which our citizens support our community. Well-intended people differ in their views of the role our schools play in the community. Some see the primary role of our schools to support the overall mission of the community, including providing resources for adult fitness programs and community childcare. Other equally well-intended people realize that during the current fiscal crisis, the school must focus its limited resources on providing a quality education to our K-12 students.

As the leader of Grundy Center Schools, I have the responsibility to restrict the use of district funds to the legislatively-prescribed purpose of educating K-12 students. While I see the missions of other non-profits in the community as essential to the quality of life in Grundy Center, I trust that the generous people of this community will step up to the plate and ensure that these programs will be financially viable.

I encourage everyone to continue positive dialogue on these issues without personal attacks or assuming hidden motives. People on all sides of these issues are passionate about wanting what is best for the children, families, adults, and businesses in this community. Let us strive as a community to let the reason for the season continue to influence us for goodwill throughout the year.

Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All.

Christmas memories My mom, Grace Poock, grew up in Allison, so my grandparents, Jacob and Dora Tuil, hailed from there, on 7th Street down from the courthouse. Every Christmas morning, we would travel the short distance from Waverly to Allison. Going to grandma’s was an especially favorite thing any time, but even more at Christmas. The town was small, warm and quaint, as was her home. I would eat, play, and enjoy. The day was one I looked forward to all year long. My grandparents have long since been gone. But I haven’t forgotten those Christmases in Butler County and doubt I ever will. I miss them still.

Growing up the holidays of both Christmas and Easter were big at our house.

We all have Christmas memories.

As a child and even as an adult, it’s one of my favorite times of the year.

I remember warm cookies and cold milk. My parents’ house turned into a decorated winter wonderland with stars, lights, and candy canes. I remember climbing up on the piano to check out the manger scene. Santa was down played (especially with my mom) you see, mom and dad taught the real reason of Christmas, the birth of the Christ Child, Jesus.

The gifts were in celebration of that birth and we gave them to each other. I would wake up real early on Christmas morning.

As I continued to grow up, Christmas remained important and I’d come home from Cedar Falls to celebrate with a backseat of wrapped gifts, usually bought Dec. 23.

After graduating from college, I worked for a few years in the newspaper business. I left that job to become a shopping center marketing manager. Now, talk about Christmas. And happy shoppers. Nothing was better than shoppers with lots of packages. That last week before Christmas, we had “extra” extended hours and shuttled customers to the front doors and back out again. It was lots of fun, interesting and different than any other time of the year. When it was all over at the end of December, I used to laugh and say I was more tired than Santa’s Reindeer.

As I’ve grown up a little and gotten older, Christmas focuses more on my kids. They get anxious and excited, just as I did some 30 years ago. I no longer want gifts, I want the kids to have things, I look forward to family time.

Carson, my 11 year old son, thinks my idea of gifts is a little old fashion and outdated. I tell him there’s a happy medium and to give dad a break. He loves technology and Under Armor clothes, too.

The twins who are 9 years old still play along to some degree.

As I look ahead to the new year, I’m going to try and keep the Christma message with me on a more daily basis, rather than just something you enjoy for a season and then its gone again until next year.

Boy Scout becomes Life Scout Gabe McGrath of Boy Scout Troop 338 donated a cabinet he made for Our Saviour Lutheran Church of Ackley. The cabinet will hold their candle holders used for Christmas Eve service. Gabe worked on the cabinet for several months during the weekend to finish the project. He had help from his dad, Bob, Grandfather Larry Chapman and Great Uncle Greg Chapman. With the dedication of the cabinet Gabe has completed the requirements to become a Life Scout. He is now working on completing the requirements to become an Eagle Scout. He is pictured with Scout Master Vern Miller.

DES MOINES – Kyle Groote of Wellsburg has been named to the Dean’s List at AIB College of Business for the 2014 Fall Term.

“I am always pleased to see such a high level of scholastic achievement in our students,” said President Nancy Williams. “By challenging themselves in the classroom and making the most of the educational opportunities offered at AIB, they are sure to be well-prepared to build their careers in the business world.”

To qualify for the Dean’s List, Groote attained a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.79 for the term.

AGWSR students take part in Courage Retreat

On November 18, the 8th grade students of AGWSR Middle School spent an amazing day participating in a Courage Retreat led by Youth Frontiers out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the retreat the students took part in games, music, and large group and small group discussions. The goal bringing the Courage Retreat to AGWSR Middle School is to build a positive school community encouraging our students to live a life of character. During the day the students were empowered to examine their fears and commit themselves to act with courage so they can resist following the crowd and accept people for who they are.

Ackley State Bank, Greenbelt Bank and Trust, People Savings Bank and the Grundy County Grant sponsored the Courage Retreat. It would not have happened without their financial commitment and support. A big thank you to the volun-

teers: Lanae Metzger, Chelsea Beving, Al Jones, Jenifer Kuper, and Jacque Eberhart, who gave their time that day to build relationships with our students. Another thank you to Mrs. Arends and the middle

school staff that also took part in the day and will continue to support the students in their acts of courage.

Breathe It’s easy to take breathing for granted.

We’ve been doing it our whole life and it seems fairly automatic. But, have you ever noticed how anxious you get when your breathing is compromised? Panic attacks are often triggered by the fear that one will run out of air, in an enclosed space, for instance. And, it is with good reason that we are anxious about our breathing. Breathing is life itself; the breath of life is God’s most elemental gift. And, while breathing is usually automatic, it need not be so. We can consciously slow down our breathing, which is beneficial when we are anxious.

And we can use our breathing as an aid to prayer, breathing in and out in rhythm to our prayer. This is a very ancient method of “abiding in prayer.” That is, we repeat a short phrase every time we breathe in and breathe out. Try this, using a short prayer or phrase such as “the Lord is my shepherd” while breathing in, and “I shall not want” while breathing out. (Then repeat a hundred times.) “Praise God” (breathing in) “from whom all blessings flow” (breathing out). Any short prayer or Bible verse will work. “Inspiration” literally means the drawing of air into the lungs, but metaphorically it means to be creatively stimulated.

Local student a finalist in Iowa State Bar Association competition Lizzy Huntley of Dike-Hew Hartford School’s Talented and Gifted Program is a finalist in The Iowa State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division “Know Your Constitution” Project. One hundred finalists were selected from the more than 1,000 students across the State of Iowa who participated in the “Know Your Constitution” Project. These finalists will be honored at a luncheon held at the West Des Moines Marriott Hotel in West Des Moines on January 9, 2015. The luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. This year’s Keynote Speaker is the Honorable Ross Walters, Magistrate Judge of the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

Kaleb Kinskey is a freshman at Dike New Hartford and a freshman hockey player for the Waterloo Warriors of West High School.

Fifteen year old Kaleb travels to practices in Waterloo 5 days a week with his travel chaperones Suzanne and Roger Lechtenberg.

Kaleb plays on the JV hockey team as well as the varsity and on the varsity team he has been successful in making 3 goals in his freshman year. He plays on this team with fellow teammates from Hudson, Jesup, Independence, Cedar Falls and Waterloo.

Kaleb is the son of Joe and Paulette Kinskey of Dike and he has two older brothers and one older sister.

The Postal Service has concluded the Post Plant review process for the Dike Post Office, Customer survey responses, input from the community meeting, and the operational needs of the Postal Service were considered in reaching the implementation decision.

It has been determined that effective January 10 2015, the Dike Post Office will provide 6 hours of window service each weekday. The facility retail hours will be from

7:00 am to 2:00 pm with lunch from 12:00 noon to 12:30 pm on Monday thru Friday and 7:30 am to 8:30 am on Saturday. Access to delivery receptacles will not change as a result of the Post Plan realignment of weekday window service hours.

Customers will have access to their mail receptacles 24 hours a day and Post office box mail will be available daily for pick up by 10:00 am Monday - Friday and at 10:00 am on Saturday.

session in Washington, D.C., in February 2015. The work sessions are designed to develop a deeper understanding of government and the political process.

The “Know Your Constitution” Project is designed to enrich students’ understanding and appreciation of the Constitution. The students participating in the project were required to familiarize themselves with Constitution related issues. A quiz was completed by each participating student. An essay question accompanied the quiz in case of a tie. One hundred students and their teachers were selected to attend this luncheon.

This program is sponsored by The Iowa State Bar Association, with additional funding from the Iowa State Bar Foundation and many of the county Bar Associations across Iowa.

Local churches announce Christmas service times

Healthy Holiday eating tips, courtesy of GCMH dietitians GRUNDY CENTER — Celebrations with family, friends, and coworkers fill up the calendar as Christmas and New Year’s approach. The gatherings feature plenty of food, however, and it’s easy to put on extra weight during the holiday season.

Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH) dietitian Wendy Brewer suggests that you can arm yourself with a few tips before heading out to your holiday celebrations.

“The key is to have a plan before the party,” Brewer said. “Attending a buffet or dinner party without a plan usually leads to overeating.”

Here are Brewer’s tips: • Eat a piece of fruit or a small healthy snack and drink a glass of water before you go to the party so you don’t arrive hungry; • Look at the foods that are available and choose a set amount of favorites that you will try; • Once you’ve filled your plate, sit away from the food area so it’s

He began by apologizing for verbally attacking a school board member regarding the strained relationship between the YMCA Board and the school.

“I am man enough to admit that my actions were wrong and that has caused a continued feud that has no merit for the greater good in this community,” he said, reading from a prepared statement.

He went on to summarize the Code of Ethics from the Iowa Association of School Boards and noting that during past controversial issues few have come to School Board meetings, yet now the meetings are well attended, showcasing a problem the community has with the school board.

“Hiding behind the veil of a school board is a cowardly way of going about business,” he said. “The land lease with the preschool and the Y was removed from the agenda tonight because if it had to be voted on a threat was made to pull the current 28e agreement.

Mingle and enjoy those around you, and your attention will not be on the array of food choices, but on the people you are celebrating with!

“Last time I checked, there was a no tolerance policy in schools when it comes to bullying and I feel this is highly unethical,” he said.

Gordon also spoke about two superintendent candidates turning the Grundy Center job down.

“It was in direct correlation to our school board,” he said. “We are no longer a destination community or an attractive school for quality administrators. I am here to tell you the word is out on Grundy Center. And if you think differently you are lying to yourself.”

Gordon also said the School Board is attempting to micromanage rather than allow the administrators it has hired to do their jobs.

“Not only are we isolating ourselves from other school districts, our board is isolating us from potential students and families to relocate here,” he said.

Gordon concluded his statements by reading off a list of personal agenda items he feels the Board has.

“To get rid of the superintendent, check. To get rid of the Y; to get rid of the athletic director,” he said.

As is its policy during public comment time, Board members made no comment about Gordon’s speech either during or after he spoke.

GC Middle School ranked in statewide top 10 for math scores

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER —Grundy Center Middle School was recognized recently for its outstanding math scores.

School Digger, a Web site that ranks schools based on test scores, ranks the school No. 10 in the state with an average math score of 92.3.

“This ranking is an important testament to the valuable work that we do and the talents of our students and staff,” Secondary Principal Dr. Ann Lebo wrote in her report to the Grundy Center School Board Wednesday.

The site goes on to give GCMS a No. 10 overall ranking out of 314 schools in the state and a five-star (out of five) ranking. The ranking is up from No. 50 in 2013 and No. 20 in 2012, when the school’s average math score was 95.5.

The Grundy Center Community School District received a four-star ranking district-wide and was ranked No. 36 in the state of Iowa. Grundy Center High School received a fourstar ranking and was ranked No. 51 in the state out of 322 schools. This is up dramatically from just two years ago, when School Digger ranked

GCHS No. 317 out of 356 schools and gave it a one-star ranking. The school improved to No. 105 out of 351 last year.

Grundy Center Elementary received a three-star ranking and was rated No. 195 out of 503 ranked schools. Like the Middle School and High School, the ranking was up dramatically from a year ago, when GC Elementary was ranked No. 293 out of 597.

Other area school districts are also ranked high. AGWSR is Grundy County’s highest ranked district at No. 12 statewide and with a five-star overall ranking. AGWSR High School was ranked No. 23 in the state and received a five-star ranking, while the district’s middle school was ranked No. 46 statewide and had a four-star ranking. The District’s elementary school was not ranked due to insufficient test score data.

The Dike-New Hartford Community School District is ranked No. 98 in the state by the Web site and receives a three-star overall ranking while Gladbrook-Reinbeck is ranked No. 154 district-wide with a two-star ranking.

www.thegrundyregister.com The Dike-New Hartford Board of Education met on December 15, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room for the regular meeting with Hinde presiding and members Koop, Lizer, Lotts, and Nielsen.

Also present were administrators Hunt, Laube, Lehr, Martinek and Textor.

Visitors present at the meeting included Miki Granberg, Dennis O’Neill and Nate Stewart.

Minutes of the November 17, 2014 regular meeting were approved as written on motion of Koop and second of Nielsen. Vote all aye.

The agenda was approved on motion of Lotts and second of Lizer. Vote all aye.

Dennis O’Neill talked with the Board about possible upcoming school safety training for staff and students.

Oral and written reports of the building principals and technology coordinator were reviewed with no action taken.

The 2013-14 Driver Education program was reviewed, and on motion of Nielsen and second of Lizer, it was decided to increase the student fees to $310 for in-district students and $410 for out of district beginning in the summer of 2015 and for the 2015-16 school year classes. Vote all aye.

On motion of Nielsen and second of Koop, Board Members Lizer and Lotts were chosen to serve on the board negotiations team. Vote all aye. Hunt was also directed to obtain cost information to have legal representation for 2015-16 contract negotiations.

Hunt reviewed the 2015-16 Modified Allowable Growth application for dropout prevention in the amount of $102,676 which was approved on motion of Nielsen and second of Koop. Vote all aye.

Contracts for Ashtyn Dove as Asst. HS Girls Basketball Coach and for Waylon Bern as Head Building & Grounds director were approved on motion of Lizer and second of Koop. Vote all aye. The addition of 0.5 FTE HS wrestling coach was not approved. Vote all aye.

The unpaid adoption leave request of up to 12 weeks for Miki Granberg was approved on motion of Lizer and second of Lotts. Vote all aye.

Discussion was held regarding the purchase of a vehicle to transport handicapped students.

On motion of Lizer and second of Nielsen, it was decided to move forward with the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van. Vote all aye.

The bills of the General, Activity and Nutrition Funds were approved on motion of Nielsen and second of Koop. Vote all aye. On motion of Koop and second of Nielsen, the Financial Reports of the General, Activity and Nutrition Funds were approved. Vote all aye.

The 2013-14 Superintendent’s Annual Report was approved on motion of Koop and second of Lotts. Vote all aye.

Being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m.

A regular session of the Grundy Center City Council was called to order at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2014, in the Council Chambers by Mayor Buhrow. Present: Hamann, Ammerman, Miller and Kiewiet. Absent: Stefl.

Hamann moved and Miller seconded the approval of the meeting agenda. Motion carried four ayes.

Kiewiet moved and Hamann seconded the consent agenda consisting of: approval of the minutes of the regular session held December 1, 2014; approval of the November 2014 Investment and Treasurer Report; and approval of liquor licenses for Casey’s General Store #1589 and Johnny Rays. Motion carried four ayes.

Mayor Buhrow opened the public forum at 6:32 p.m. No public present, no comments made.

Miller moved and Hamann seconded action on Resolution 2014-56 approving Mayor Buhrow to sign a contract with INRCOG for the administration of the comprehensive solid waste management plan for the Iowa DNR. Motion carried with four ayes.

Miller moved and Kiewiet seconded action on Resolution 2014-57, a resolution amending previous resolution allowing Mayor Buhrow to sign the Letter of Engagement for the annual audit of the City of Grundy Center FY2014 financial records with Dennis Donovan, CPA. Motion carried four ayes.

Hamann moved and Miller seconded action on Resolution 2014-58, a resolution appointing The Grundy Register and the official newspaper for the City of Grundy Center. Motion carried four ayes.

Hamann moved and Kiewiet seconded action to approve the First Reading of Ordinance 515, establishing a Historic Preservation Commission for the City of Grundy Center. Motion carried four ayes.

Discussion was held on amending Chapter 166 – Subdivision Regulations. The current code reads that a subdivision plat is required at the first parcel divide. The State of Iowa Code is not as strict and allows the first parcel split to be completed without the full subdivision plat.

The draft amending ordinance prepared by Seth Schroeder, City Attorney, changes the definition of a subdivision to allow the first parcel divide to be allowed without a full subdivision survey. Buhrow commented that this does not take away any controls over the zoning or uses of the property. Those codes will not change.

Decision was made to move forward with the draft and Clerk Sawyer will notify the City Attorney.

Finance Committee commented on meeting that was held about the Planning and Zoning Commission and their compensation. Overall agreement was made to discontinue the compensation and start preliminary research on a possible Building Inspector position. Beginning discussions on a budget amendment necessary for this fiscal year.

Safety Committee commented that the Police Department is finally fully staffed. Chris Henely and Mitch Turner graduated from ILEA on Friday, December 12, 2014. The updated bullet proof vest have arrived. Chief Frost is working towards getting the new officers fully trained and start making progress in the department.

Public Works Committee made comments on maintenance work being completed; tree trimming; assisting library with carpet install; and need to look at new locator for water mains.

Hamann moved and Miller seconded adjournment of the meeting. Motion carried four ayes.

Spartan girls take lead of NICL West

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center girls closed the first part of the 2014-15 season strong with three wins, two of them conference wins that helped them take over sole possession of the NICL West lead. The Spartans earned a 41-32 win over East Marshall Friday, after a thrilling 57-50 double overtime win over South Hardin Tuesday, and a dominating 54-24 win over Meskwaki on Monday.

Grundy Center (7-2 overall, 4-1 NICL-West) will return from the holiday break for three road games, at Aplington-Parkersburg on Monday, Jan. 5, at Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and at West Marshall on Friday, Jan. 9.

Grundy Center 41, East Marshall 32 The Spartans held a slight 26-24 halftime lead, then stepped up in a big way defensively in the second half, rattling the Mustang shooters and holding them to three points in the third quarter and five in the fourth. The Spartans also crashed the defensive boards and forced turnovers down the stretch to maintain control and hold on for the win by nine.

“We were able to hold their top scorers under their average, and we really hit the defensive boards,” Grundy Center head coach Matt Lindeman said. “The girls really did a great job in breaking their press all night and being able to stretch the lead to 10 points in the third quarter.

We seemed to always find a way to create a turnover after making a mistake ourselves. A great conference win, takes us to 7-2 into Christmas break after playing nine games in three weeks.”

Katie Lindeman achieved a double double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Alyssa Mathews score 17 points, provided five assists, and came away with six steals.

“The girls really did a great job identifying South Hardin’s shooters in our half-court defense,” Coach Matt Lindeman said. “Our full court pressure in the overtime periods was able to cause enough problems and allowed us to pull away for a big conference win against a very good South Hardin team. It is great to see girls giving great effort, working together as a team, and playing with a positive attitude, each night.”

Katie Lindeman led Grundy Center with 20 points, Kayla Mathews added 15, and Alyssa Mathews scored 13 points, claimed 12 rebounds, and dished out six assists.

Stephanie Faust led in rebounds with 13 and Kayla Mathews topped the steals category with five.

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center girls’ volleyball coach Darwin Sents has opted to call it a career.

Last Wednesday the Grundy Center School Board accepted Sents’ resignation from a post he has held for the past 17 years. In his letter announcing the resignation to Athletic Director Rollie Ackerman, Sents thanked him for his support.

“It has meant a lot to myself and the program,” he wrote. “I have certainly enjoyed my years as head coach and I am thankful for the opportunity to work with such great young ladies and athletes.

“I hope you are able to find a head coach with the passion and energy for the program so as to continue and to build on its success,” he continued. “We have a very talented and hard working group of young ladies coming back next year that will certainly keep the program headed in the right direction.”

Grundy Center’s volleyball program has been dominant in the North Iowa Cedar League West Division over the past decade, having won six straight conference titles, all with undefeated records.

Grundy Center has not lost a set in conference play since 2009.

The Spartans have advanced to the state volleyball tournament the past five years under Sents’ guidance, having reached the Class 1A state final in 2012. Sents’ career coaching record is 506 wins, 132 losses and 12 ties, all at Grundy Center.

Sents’ resignation was not completely unexpected, as his youngest daughter Riley, an allstate libero for the Spartans the past four years, signed a letter of intent to play college volleyball at the University of Missouri next year.

Many of Missouri’s matches are played on Fridays and Saturdays.

As Sents eluded to, the next GCHS volleyball coach will have a wealth of talent to work with.

GCHS graduated just two players from this year’s 29-10 team and is expected to return its setter and top four hitters next year.

Grundy Center tops East Marshall, falls to South Hardin and Meskwaki

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy Center earned a 55-28 win over East Marshall Friday in their final game before the holiday break. Earlier in the week the Spartans fell 50-46 to South Hardin in overtime, and dropped a road game to Meskwaki, 50-41.

The Spartans (3-6 overall, 2-3 NICL-West) return to the court in January for a pair of road games, at Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and at West Marshall on Friday, Jan. 9.

Grundy Center 55, East Marshall 28 The Spartans ended the week on a high note with a big win over NICL-West rival East Marshall. The Spartan defense held East Marshall to four points in both the second and fourth quarters, and the offense used a 19 point third quarter to increase the 23-11 halftime lead to a 27 point final margin.

“East Marshall was our best overall team defensive effort of the season thus far,” Grundy Center head

coach Rollie Ackerman said. “The win was a good way to close out our pre-Christmas schedule, which was very hectic with lots of games.”

“We had several guys really step up off the bench and that was a real key to pulling away to a big win,” he said. “The break comes at a good time as we have several guys with injuries that will need to heal before we get going with the rest of the regular season.”

Jordan Stoner led the Spartans with 10 points, despite going down with an injury in the second half.

Nick Saak and Braidan Buhrow both scored nine apiece and Austin Burroughs added seven. Sam Thompson led in rebounds with eight and assists with four.

South Hardin 50, Grundy Center 46 South Hardin built a sizable first quarter lead that held until the fourth quarter when the Spartans outscored the Tigers 14-4 to tie the game and send it into overtime. The hard fought battle saw South Hardin earn a 7-3 advantage in the overtime period to take the win by four.

“South Hardin was one of the preseason conference favorites coming into the season,” Coach Rollie Ackerman said. “They jumped out to a 16 point lead in the first half, but we found a way to battle back.”

“It was a physical, intense ball game all the way through and our effort was very good,” he said. “It was good to see Austin (Burroughs) get on track shooting wise with 21 points. (It was a) tough overtime loss to a good veteran team.”

“Meskwaki is a very quick team with very good guards and knew it would be a tough road contest,” Coach Ackerman said. “Jordan Stoner had a career night with 16 rebounds, but our shooting woes continued as we could not hit enough big shots late.”

Jordan Stoner posted a double double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, and he contributed three blocks to the Spartan cause. Fourth-ranked Rebels roll into holiday break

REINBECK — The GladbrookReinbeck boys’ basketball team will have much to celebrate over its twoweek holiday break, as it ended the December portion of its schedule on a roll.

The Rebels, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, swept through its final week of 2014 with victories over AGWSR, West Marshall and Denver. They head into the break alone atop the North Iowa Cedar League West Division standings with a 6-0 record, including 4-0 in divisional games.

Triple-overtime victory headlines strong week for Rebel girls

REINBECK — Gladbrook-Reinbeck threw a wrench into the topsyturvey North Iowa Cedar League girls’ basketball race last week, topping conference leaders in back-toback games on their way to a perfect 3-0 week.

The Rebels, who entered the week with just one victory, opened the week by stunning league-leading AGWSR in triple-overtime Tuesday and then topped league co-leader West Marshall Friday. They wrapped up the week with a non-divisional victory over Denver.

G-R (4-3 overall, 2-3 in the NICL West) heads to the holiday break with a three-game winnng streak.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 79, AGWSR 71 The Rebels rallied from seven points behind in the second half and jumped to leads in the first minute of all three overtime periods before pulling out the stunner Tuesday.

The game was tied 53-53 at the end of regulation. AGWSR rallied from five points behind in the final minute of the first overtime to force a second and then hit a pair of clutch free throws at the end of the second extra period to force a third. G-R opened the third extra period with a

7-2 run.

Nicole Adair led four double-digit Rebel scorers with 20 points while Hanna Christopher scored 18, Kyleah Dugan 11 and Hayley Weber 10.

Weber added 10 rebounds and seven assists while Adair had seven assists and six steals.

Wolverines split conference games

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent DIKE – After splitting a pair of games this past week the Dike-New Hartford boys stand second in the East side of the North Iowa Cedar League. The Wolverines suffered their first loss of the season Friday to undefeated Aplington-Parkersburg, after a 53-51 come from behind win over Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday.

Dike-New Hartford (5-1 overall, 4-1 NICL-East) will return from the holiday break for a pair of home games, hosting Wapsie Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and Denver on Friday, Jan. 9.

Aplington-Parkersburg 68, Dike-New Hartford 54 Aplington-Parkersburg got off to a fast start, hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter to take an early 16-6 lead. Dike-New Hartford continued to battle but struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half, both from the field and the free throw line, as the Falcons extended the lead to 20 by the halfway mark.

The Wolverines cut the lead to 11 at one point in the second half, but the Falcon early advantage proved too much to overcome, and A-P went on to claim sole possession of the NICL-East lead with a 68-54 win.

Moore said. “I thought we turned up the defense a little in and played with more of a sense of urgency.”

Dike-New Hartford 53, Sumner-Fredericksburg 51 Connor Neuroth hit a 3-point shot with 56 seconds left in the game to put the Wolverines up by two, then hit the front end of a two shot foul to stretch the lead by three with six seconds on the clock to lift Dike-New Hartford over Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday.

A close, physical game throughout, the Wolverines took the lead

by one at the end of the first quarter, then never saw a lead again until midway through the fourth quarter.

“I thought we were a lot more assertive in the second half and especially the fourth quarter,” Coach Moore said. “We really turned it up defensively, limiting Sumner-Fredericksburg to six field goals in the second half.”

“Connor Neuroth had a good game on both ends of the floor,” he said. “He did a good job of controlling the pace of the game. Zach Nicholson came off the bench to give us a spark defensively and offensively by scoring a couple big buckets and getting the ball to people in scoring positions.”

Neuroth paced the Wolverines with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Connor Blough scored 11 and Cole Wildeover added eight.

Wolverines get two more wins

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent DIKE– Dike-New Hartford picked up a pair of conference wins just before heading into the holiday break with a 54-26 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday and a 51-27 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday. Tuesday’s win not only put them in sole possession of the NICL-East lead, but also snapped a 53-game Sumner-Fredericksburg conference winning streak.

The Cougars’ last league loss was Jan. 18, 2011 to South Winneshiek.

The Wolverines (7-1 overall, 5-0 NICL-East) will play at Crestwood on Saturday, Jan. 3, followed by home games with Wapsie Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 6 and Denver on Friday, Jan. 9.

Dike-New Hartford 54, Aplington-Parkersburg 26 Dike-New Hartford proved effective on both ends of the court in their comfortable win over the Falcons. Up 12-9 at the end of the first period, D-NH held A-P to just three points in the second quarter while scoring 17 themselves to build a 17 point lead by the halfway mark, then spread it 28 by the end of regulation.

“We knew that A-P would come in and play hard against us,” DikeNew Hartford head coach Bruce Dall said. “It was a great environment for our kids to play in.”

“Our defense once again has been our go to strength as our fast break looked as sharp as ever,” he said. “I have been pleased with the passing of the team to date.”

Olivia Verhulst led the Wolverines with 20 points including four baskets from 3-point range, and led in rebounding with six. Lizzy Blough scored 16, and Brooke Morgan claimed five rebounds and blocked seven shots.

Back-to-back heartbreakers send Cougars tumbling from top of NICL West standings

REINBECK — AGWSR’s rise to the top of the North Iowa Cedar League girls’ basketball standings proved short-lived last week, as back-to-back heartbreaking losses sent the Cougars tumbling last week.

AGWSR, ranked No. 10 in Class 1A, fell to Gladbrook-Reinbeck in triple overtime Tuesday before falling in the final 30 seconds to Hudson Friday.

The Cougars head to the holiday break with a 5-3 overall record and tied for second in the tightly-contested NICL West with a 3-2 mark.

GR-NT-GC sees dual Wolverines sweep triangular, win own dual tourney action at Dike and Eldora

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent DIKE â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The GR-NT-GC wrestlers went 1-4 at the Dike-New Hartford Duals on Saturday, picking up a 60-18 win over B-G-M, but falling to Dike-New Hartford 77-6, Washington 54-27, Saint Ansgar 48-33, and South Winnishiek 58-23. Ethan Erhardt went 4-1 on the day for the Rebelhawks at 126 with two pins.

Matt Chamberlain went 3-0 at 132 with a pin and a technical fall. Noah Skornia went 3-2 at 106, and Cael Wyatt, William Blakesley, and Parker Bowen each went 2-3 on the day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were in three of them (of the five duals) and came up with a victory over B-G-M,â&#x20AC;? GR-NT-GC coach Kyle Formanek said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Saint Ansgar and Washington were two teams that we had a shot at beating. Due to sicknesses and injuries, which have been affecting us all season, we came up a little short again.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our team has grown a lot since the beginning of the year,â&#x20AC;?
