High school caps off winter concert series Thursday

The North Iowa High School band and choir will present their annual winter concert this Thursday, Dec. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the North Iowa Auditorium. This free concert will include performances by the high school choir, band and jazz band. This will be the final concert of the holiday season at North Iowa, with the middle school concert scheduled for this Tuesday evening. Among the students who will perform Thursday are, front from left: Natalie Dirksen, Madison Stenersen, Alyssa Swearingen and Krista Schutter. Buffalo Center celebrates the holidays

Orange’s hosts Ugly Sweater/Dueling Pianos Party

Orange’s will host an Ugly Sweater Party with entertainment provided by Crazy Keys Dueling Pianos on Saturday, December 20 from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Crazy Keys Dueling Pianos entertains with group comedy, limericks and props. There will be drink specials throughout the night.

Beef weigh in next month for Winnebago County Fair

Youth interested in showing Market Beef at the Winnebago County Fair need to have their animals weighed and entered in the 4-H online database by February 1, 2015.

The Market Beef Weigh-In will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Balvance Farm north of Buffalo Center (46791 20th Ave., Buffalo Center). The beef animals will also be tagged at this time. This will be the only date in Winnebago County.

In the event of extremely bad weather, the make-up date will be Saturday, Jan. 17. Listen to KIOW for beef weigh-in cancellation.

Youth from local churches took part in a live nativity scene during Buffalo Center’s Old Fashioned Christmas, which included several costumed characters, as well as real sheep. Santa Claus also took part in the scene, which emphasized the real meaning of Christmas.

Great turnout at benefit for local family

A big crowd came out to support a Buffalo Center family last weekend, during the benefit for Dalton Cooper at the Heritage Town Center. People came out to enjoy a pancake breakfast in the morning and/ or pulled pork sandwiches for lunch.

Many people came out to greet Dalton Cooper, center, on Saturday and to show their support for him and his family, as Dalton prepares for surgery in January. Dalton, 17, was born with cerebral palsy, and he has endured many health problems and surgeries throughout his life. Money raised at this fundraiser will help with the family’s expenses during his next stay at the hospital. With Dalton are his dad, Duane Cooper, and his aunt Deena Paul.

The Ladies American Legion Auxiliary Post 21 met at the Heritage Town Center, Buffalo Center at noon, on Monday, December 8 for Christmas potluck. Twelve members were present.

President Delores Griffin called the meeting to order. All members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble. The standing rules were read. Secretary/Treasurer Karen Kiewiet read the minutes from the last meeting and gave the Trea-

By Cammi Anderson Activity Director Over our weekend, we watched and listened to Under the Hood, Lawrence Welk, First Reformed Church and Peace and Power. Our Saturday matinee was Unlikely Angel. Thank you, Betty Coxson, for sharing the movie with us. Pastor Peake led our worship services on Sunday. He also had Communion. Thank you, Pastor Peake.

Monday morning, we exercised to Kenny Rogers, had our monthly Resident Voices and I gave hand massages during my Sunshine group. At 2:00 p.m., Betty Coxson came and read to us. Thank you, Betty. At 3:00 p.m., we played frisbee golf and Name That Memory.

Tuesday morning, we had Card Club. This month it is TMNH’s turn to host salad luncheon. This time, we had staff bring in salads. They brought in pasta, fruit, pea and oriental salads. Thank you, ladies, for helping this be a great salad luncheon. To end our day, we played hat toss and had a Christmas sing-along.

Wednesday, we exercised to Frank Sinatra. Windy Creek came to help

us celebrate our December birthdays. Thank you, Windy Creek. At my Sunshine group, we watched A Country Christmas at Opryland.

During the afternoon, we watched Christmas at Luther, frosted sugar cookies, played dominoes and Monica read the Buffalo Center Tribune.

Thursday, Pastor Peake came for Bible study. The lessons this week were: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 and John 1:6-8, 1928. Thank you, Pastor Peake. During my Sunshine group, I read some Christmas stories. What a great turn out we had for our open house. We would like to thank everyone that came out.

Friday, we exercised to Winter Wonderland. The winners this week at bowling were; Jo Meinders with a score of 155 and Donna Mayland with a score of 179. During both sensory groups, we had a balloon toss while listening to Christmas music.

Friday afternoon, we had bingo and Happy Hour.

SENTENCES AND PLEAS Brianna Ayers, 25, Forest City, had her deferred judgment revoked for the charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine. Ayers was sentenced to serve two days in jail, and was ordered to pay a $250 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. She will have her license revoked by the DOT. Elenita Celindro, 51, Leland, was sentenced on the charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance-Third Offense (Methamphetamine). Celindro was sentenced to serve an indeterminate prison sentence not to exceed five years and was ordered to pay a $750 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. The prison sentence, fine, and criminal surcharge were suspended and she was placed

on probation for three years. As a term of her probation, Celindro will be placed at the BEJE Clark Residential Facility for a period of 180 days or until maximum benefits are achieved. She will have her license revoked by the DOT. Marcel Cook, 22, Forest City, pled guilty to Driving While Revoked, a serious misdemeanor, stemming from a traffic stop by the Forest City Police Dept, July 2, 2014. Travis Gress, 26, Forest City, pled guilty to Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Lake Mills Police Dept, April 19, 2014. Gress was sentenced to serve an indeterminate prison sentence not to exceed two years, and was ordered to pay a $625 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. The prison sentence was suspended and Gress will be on probation for two years. He will be required to register as a sex offender and pay all fees and civil penalties.

Charles Kraft, 33, Lake Mills, pled guilty to Driving While Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from a traffic stop by the Lake Mills Police Dept., May 22, 2014. Kraft was sentenced to serve an indeterminate prison sentence not to exceed two years, and was ordered to pay a $625 fine, applicable surcharges and court costs. The prison sentence, fine, and criminal surcharge were suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. Kraft will have his license revoked by the DOT. Eric Kruse, 29, Forest City, was found in contempt of court for a probation violation and was sentenced to serve seven days in jail.

Nicholas Mosby, 26, Lake Mills, pled guilty to Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Lake Mills Police Dept., July 6, 2014. Mosby was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail, with all but four days suspended, and was ordered to pay a $625 fine, applicable surcharges, court costs and victim restitution in the amount of $500. The fine and surcharge were suspended. Mosby also pled guilty to Public Intoxication-Second Offense, stemming from an investigation by the Lake Mills Police Dept, April 5, 2014. Mosby was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail, with all but four days suspended, and was ordered to pay a $500 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. Mosby will be on probation for 1 year. As a term of his probation, he must obtain a substance abuse evaluation and follow through with all treatment recommendations.

Mark Murra, 60, Rake, pled guilty to OWI-Second Offense, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from a traffic stop by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Dept, July 14, 2014. Murra was sentenced to serve 180 days in jail, with all but seven days suspended, and was ordered to pay a $1,875 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. Murra will be on probation for one year, must follow through with all substance abuse treatment recommendations, and will have his license revoked by the DOT. David Orozco, 21, pled guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Forest City Police Dept, July 17, 2014. Orozco was sentenced to serve two days in jail, and was ordered to pay a $315 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. He must obtain a substance abuse evaluation and follow through with all treatment recommendations, and will have his license revoked by the DOT. Matthew Penning, 26, Buffalo

Center, pled guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance-Second Offense (Marijuana), an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, March 7, 2014.

Penning was sentenced to serve two days in jail, and was ordered to pay a $315 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. He must obtain a substance abuse evaluation and follow through with all treatment recommendations and will have his license revoked by the DOT. Larry Richtsmeier, 69, Forest City, pled guilty to Driving While Revoked, a serious misdemeanor, stemming from a traffic stop by the Forest City Police Dept, Nov. 2, 2014.

Richtsmeier was ordered to pay a $1,000, fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. He will have his license revoked by the DOT. Brandy Simpson, 31, Lake Mills, pled guilty to Public Intoxication-Third Offense, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, May 10, 2014.

Simpson was sentenced to serve 100

days in jail, with all but seven days suspended, and was ordered to pay a $625 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. The fine and surcharge were suspended. Simpson will be on probation for one year. As a term of her probation, she must obtain a substance abuse evaluation and follow through with all treatment recommendations.

Isaiah Talamantes, 19, Albert Lea, Minn., pled guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, a class C felony, stemming from an investigation by the Lake Mills Police Dept., May 27, 2014. Talamantes is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 20, 2015.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS December 2, 2014 The Winnebago County Board of Supervisors met in session at 9:00 A.M. December 2, 2014 adjourned from November 25, 2014.

Present: Supervisors Stensrud, Jensvold and Durby Absent: On a motion by Stensrud and seconded by Jensvold the Supervisors moved to approve the minutes for the November 25, 2014 Board Meeting and to approve the agenda for December 2, 2014. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Riley Lewis, Operation Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home committee member discussed the Welcome Home event for August, 2015.

The event has been well received by the surrounding counties and local businesses. The committee is requesting $10 per veteran from Winnebago County. The Board of Supervisors will take action on this next week.

Jim Rodberg, Scarville city councilman discussed the need for a stop sign on their main street. Traffic has not been following the speed limit and the city is worried about pedestrians getting injured. Scott Meinders, County Engineer commented on how stop signs are not always the answer. The Board of Supervisors asked Scott to come up with further information and/or suggestions.

On a motion by Stensrud and seconded by Jensvold the Supervisors moved to approve the contract with Rognes Bros for DD 18 Lat 1, Lat 30, and Lat 31. All voted aye. Motion carried.

The Board of Supervisors discussed reports to be given to the ISAC District II meeting.

Kris Wempen, Finance Deputy discussed a mileage claim that did not have enough detail.

Wempen explained how the external auditor and Karla Weiss, County Auditor need to have correct information before a claim can be paid.

The claim was withdrawn and no further discussion.

During open forum Teresa Nicholson, WinnWorth Betco discussed how surrounding counties are wanting to have a lobbyist for a Natural Gas Replacement Tax. Nicholson is requesting $2,500 to be paid from the Winn-Worth Betco fund. The Supervisors will discuss this at budget time.

Scott Meinders, Engineer discussed secondary roads including snow removal.

On a motion by Stensrud and seconded by Jensen the Supervisors moved to approve a contract with Graves Construction for Bridge Replacement Project BROS-CO95(61)—8J-95.

All voted aye. Motion carried.

The Supervisors discussed the Public Safety Center. Jensvold discussed the jail being in Thompson. After some discussion it was decided to get further information from John Hanson as to the transportation costs. The Supervisors will discuss this again next week.

There was no discussion on the purchase of property for the Public Safety Center.

The session was adjourned until December 9, 2014.

Meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Pres. Giesking with members Balvance, Duve, Giesking, and Holstad. Absent: Price, Sachs, and Wubben. Also in attendance were Supt. Brown Sugar Spice Party Mix 6 cups Vanilla Chex™ cereal 1/2 cup whole roasted almonds 1/2 cup whole roasted cashews 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger ½ cup gluten-free yogurt-covered cranberries or yogurt-covered raisins Measure cereal and nuts into large microwavable bowl; set aside.

In 2-cup microwavable measuring cup, microwave butter on high 30 seconds; stir and microwave 30 seconds longer or until butter is melted. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup and spices.

Heat until boiling, about 30 seconds.

Asmus signs on as Waldorf cheerleader The Waldorf College cheerleading program is excited to add North Iowa High School senior Haley Asmus to its 2015-16 recruiting class.

“Haley will be basing for us the next year and will be a great addition to the squad,” said Waldorf coach Dyanna Quisling.

Asmus, a Thompson native, signed a letter of intent with the Warriors on Oct. 15 and is the eighth member of the team’s incoming class.

As a varsity cheerleader for the Bison during all four years of her career, Asmus earned varsity letters as a junior and senior. She has served as a flyer and a base throughout high school. Quisling previously coached at North Iowa for five years and is eager to watch Asmus continue to develop at the next level.

“I’ve coached Haley since middle school, and cheer has always been a big part of Haley’s life,” said Quisling. “It will be exciting to watch her further her skills in a new role, as she has been a flyer for me in the past.”

Asmus is the daughter of Kim Mitthun and Mike Johnson. She plans to

pursue a degree in education at Waldorf. The college’s size and proximity to her hometown and family led Asmus to her decision to join the Warriors.

“I chose Waldorf College because it’s small, and I grew up around Forest City,” said Asmus. “I also have family members who have graduated from Waldorf.”

Former Waldorf cheerleader Sam Lampman is North Iowa’s coach and has helped Asmus continue to grow in the sport during her final year with the Bison.

“Haley is fortunate to be able to gain a tremendous amount of skill and knowledge with her senior year coach,” said Quisling.

Having the chance to cheer under Quisling once again, Asmus is looking forward to her career with the Warriors.

“I am excited to continue cheering at Waldorf College,” said Asmus. “I am happy to be able to have Dyanna coaching me again through my college years.”

High school bowling season underway The North Iowa High School bowling teams opened the 2014-15 season on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Buffalo Lanes, as they hosted Oelwein.

The Lady Bison squad came up short 1957-1885, while a short-handed boys’ team lost 2749-1270 with only three bowlers.

Jenna Berschman led her team with the high game and series, scoring 130 and 152 for a total of 282.

Other totals for the girls were Jordan Ostrander 243, Sydney Giesking 241, Chelsey Roth 235, Katie Stelter 218 and Danica Voortmann 189. Individual boys’ scores were not available.

North Iowa Head Coach Doug Aukes said this was the first meet for most of the girls. “We need to work on hitting our mark and picking up spares,” said Aukes. “I expect to see much improvement as this team matures during the season.”

On Friday, Dec. 5, the North Iowa bowlers traveled to Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo to face Denver. The girls’ team came up short by just one dozen pins in a 1884-1872 loss, while the Bison, still short one man, lost 1905-1825.

Spencer Armstrong led the boys’ team with scores of 244 and 246 for a 490 series. Berschman was the high scorer again for the girls with games of 99 and 154 for a 253 series.

She was followed by Ostrander 247, Giesking 242, Roth 227, Voortmann 226 and Stelter 200.

“We have made a lot of progress in the first month of bowling and will continue to improve as they get more experience on the lanes,” said Aukes.

Last Friday, Dec. 12, the bowlers traveled to Waverly, where both teams lost to the Go-Hawks. The girls lost their match 2222-1685, while the boys were down 29991471.

Ostrander led the Lady Bison this time around with scores of 146 and 108 for a 254 series. Berschman totaled 250, followed by Giesking 227, Roth 214 and Stelter 141.

“Since the first practice, we’ve worked on hitting our target and follow through, and things are improving, but the scores have not reflected our practice drills,” said Coach Aukes. “We work hard as a team, and things will come together when they developed muscle memory and can repeat good shots. Waverly has many senior players and were state qualifiers last year.”

Armstrong led the boys’ squad in scoring with games of 183 and 136 for a 319 series. He was followed by Noah Melz with a 300 series, William Roeder 204 and Zach Dirksen 196.

“Waverly is last year’s State Champions, and they are very good this year,” said Aukes. “As in most sports, home field is a great advantage, and bowling is no different.

The oil patterns on the lanes were different enough from our comfort zone that it made it a little difficult for our players to get comfortable.

It is rather difficult for a bowler to throw quality and repeatable shots when we are frustrated.

“Sometimes we just need to make the best shot possible and avoid missing spares,” added Coach Aukes.

“We will recover and improve.”

Bison drop two matches in second week The North Iowa Bison are still looking for that first win after going 0-2 in their second week of conference basketball action.

The Bison opened last week on the road Tuesday, Dec. 9 at North Union, where they fell 58-32. Austin Paden led North Iowa’s offensive effort with nine points, followed by Trevor Aukes with six. Taylor Ostermann and Josiah Beenken each made six rebounds.

“We had some struggles both offensively and defensively against North Union,” said Bison Head Coach Chad Hinders. “This prompted us to spend a lot of the week in practice reviewing fundamental concepts and prioritizing what we want to accomplish on defense and offense.”

game of the basketball season on Friday, Dec. 12 against West Hancock. Despite the home court advantage, the Eagles swooped in for a 6840 victory to remain undefeated so far this year.

Paden led North Iowa in scoring once again with 14 points, including going 4/4 from behind the threepoint arc. He was followed by Ostermann with 13 points. Connor Smith led in rebounds with seven, and Ostermann pulled down five.

“The concepts we worked on sporadically appeared during the West Hancock contest. The Eagles are a talented group that could really push the ball down the floor,” said Coach Hinders. “We had a couple of possessions where we moved the ball around and were able to make some baskets. We just need to gain more confidence and consistency in both our offense and defensive schemes.”

Freddie Eden led the Bison in scoring with 13 points, while Austin Haisman added six. “This was a back and forth game in which we came up short at the end,” said Coach Justin Ullmann.

“We will learn from our mistakes and be a better team moving forward.”

Last Friday night, the JV boys beat West Hancock, 46-34. Eden led the Bison with 20 points, while Colin Weaver added nine points. Freddie also had nine rebounds, and Weaver had four for the Bison. “We shot the ball much better, and defensively, we rebounded very well. I like the direction the team is trending,” said Coach Ullmann.

The scoreboard tells the story … 52-29, North Iowa.

An open house retirement reception for Robert Paulson, retiring Winnebago County Auditor, will be held on Wednesday, December 29 at the Winnebago County courthouse. Paulson has served Winnebago County for 34 years; six years as Deputy Sheriff and 28 years as Winnebago County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections.

20 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 15, 1994 The North Iowa High School Vocal Department will present their annual Winter Concert Monday evening, December 19, in the high school auditorium. Among the soloists are Molly Trenary, Courtney Davids, Debbie Lynch and Kelly Armstrong.

The Super Salesmen of the Cub Scouts were Devin Bosma, who sold 123 three-pound buckets of popcorn, and Tom Peterson, who sold a total of 83 containers. They are both members of the Buffalo Center-Rake Cub Scouts Pack, which sold a grand total of 409 packets of popcorn.

The Buffalo Center and Rake Libraries will receive computers early next year as a result of a grant received by the North Central Regional Library System. Seventy-three libraries will receive computers with the $174,242 grant.

Gassman appointed Vice Chair of Education committee

Iowa House Speaker Kraig Paulsen (R-Hiawatha) recently announced that Rep. Tedd Gassman (R-Scarville) will serve as the Vice Chairman of the House Education committee.

“Rep. Gassman is a proven leader in the area of education. He is committed to working every day on behalf of Iowa’s students, parents, and teachers,” said Paulsen.

Gassman was also appointed to the following committees: Environmental Protection, Local Government, Labor and the Administration and Regulation budget subcommittee.

The legislative session begins January 12, 2015.

Ruth Eileen Menagh Ruth Eileen Menagh, 53 of Thompson, passed away at her home surround-

ed by her family, Monday, December 8, 2014. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with Pastor Lynn Noel officiating. Inurnment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson, at a later date.

Ruth Eileen Coxson Menagh was born March 31, 1961 in Norwalk, CA, daughter of Richard Gilbert and Ferne Yvonne (Ellingson) Coxson. She graduated from Mayfair High School in Lakewood, CA, Class of 1979.

She then attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she met her future husband, the love of her life, John “Rob” Menagh. They were united in marriage June 12, 1982, in Lakewood, CA. Ruth and Rob owned and managed a bowling alley, bar and restaurant in Delano, CA, for a few years. They moved to Thompson in 1992, where they raised their three children, Shannon (24), Colleen (22) and John (19).

Ruth was a manager of Dairy Queen in Blue Earth, MN. She later went to work for Fleetguard/Cummins in Lake Mills. After leaving Cummins, she attended and graduated, Suma Cum Laude, in 2012 from the University of Northern Iowa.

Ruth is survived by: her loving husband, Rob; children, Shannon, Colleen and John; parents, Richard and Ferne Coxson; siblings, Pam, Jan, Al, Phil, Debbie, Tom and Rob and their respective families; special friend since seventh grade, Carrie Vela; and many other extended family members and close friends.

Ruth’s family suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mittelstadt Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Gela J. Murra Gela J. Murra, 96, a resident of Davenport, formerly of Buffalo Center,

died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Kahl Home, Davenport. Private committal services will be held in Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Gela Boomgaarten was born on April 25, 1918 in Greetsiel, East Friesland, Germany, a daughter of Jakob and Gretje (Lupkes) Boomgaarten. She was united in marriage to Wubbe F. Murra on October 3, 1942 in Greetsiel, Germany. He preceded her in death in 1975. Mr. and Mrs. Murra arrived in the United States along with their two daughters, Gerda and Dieta, aboard the S.S. America on December 2, 1952. They settled near Buffalo Center, where Wubbe farmed.

Mrs. Murra was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center and the Bethlehem Church Circle Ladies. She especially enjoyed time with family, as well as gardening, cooking and reading.

Gela is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Gerda and Gary Lane, Bettendorf, and Dieta Murra and Saul Meyer, Taylor Ridge, IL; grandsons, Matthew (Jessi) Lane and Stephen Lane, all of Davenport; three great-grandchildren: Max, Alex, and Jacob.

She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, Dieter J. Murra, her parents, a brother, Gerhardt Boomgaarten, and a sister, Katrina Meyer.

OBITUARIES Jean Canterbury Jean Canterbury, 88 of Rake died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral services were held Friday, December 12 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, with Pastor Terry Mahnke officiating. Burial will be at West Cemetery in Rake.

Jean Ann Canterbury was born to Selmer and Julia Espeland on August 17, 1926 at Rake. She lost her mother when she was six, and her father remarried so she had a stepmother, Josie. Jean was confirmed in Liberty Lutheran Church and graduated from Rake High School in 1944.

After going to a Teachers College for a summer, she taught country school east of Rake. She enjoyed teaching but moved on to other jobs in Albert Lea and Washington, DC, where she was working when World War 2 ended and witnessed (and got lost in) the celebrating in the streets. From there, Jean went to Cheyenne, WY, where she met a soldier named Mack Canterbury.

They were married on November 15, 1947 and had two children, John Mack and Julia Lou while living there.

They were sent many places while serving their country, including New York State before Mack was sent to France. While he was there, Jean, John and Julia lived in a trailer at the family farm north of Rake. When Mack returned, the family moved to New Mexico. When he got orders to go to France again, his family went with him. While in France, a son, Eric D, was born. They were stationed at Laon, France, Ramstein, Germany and Ulm, Germany during the three and a half years they were in Europe. They took road trips every chance they got, seeing Paris and the Eifel tower, old castles, beautiful palaces and cathedrals and the 1956 Brussels World’s Fair. Back in the USA, they were sent to Rapid City, SD, where their son David was born.

When Mack was ready to retire from the Air Force, Jean’s dad was retiring from farming, so they moved to the family farm in 1961. Jean loved being a busy farm wife, even doing field work until her boys were old enough to do it. They joined Zion Lutheran Church, and she was very active in the church.

Jean was a 4-H leader in the 60s. She is a 50 year member of Eastern Star and an American Legion Auxiliary member for 53 years. Jean and Mack were one of the couples to start the Rake Rocking R’s square dance club. Jean was Mack’s “secretary” when he organized reunions for the different military squadrons he had been in. She loved visiting with people wherever she went. Jean also loved sewing – clothes, embroidery, crochet and especially quilting. She took a rosmalling class and made some beautiful things. Most of all, she loved her family and took care of her grandchildren every chance she got.

Jean is survived by a sister, Ruth Pederson; brother Stanley (Susan) Espeland; daughter Julia (Terry) Hatch; sons Eric (Laura) Canterbury and David Canterbury; grandchildren Anna Moklestad, Andrea (Jason) Spencer, Crystal Legried, Alison Tindall; great grandchildren Haley Moklestad, Kaitlyn Moklestad, Jason Moklestad, Thomas Moklestad, Shea Spencer, Charlie Rose Tindall; and nieces and nephews.

StateLine Cooperative offering scholarships For the 17th year, StateLine Cooperative is offering eight $500 scholarships to area high school seniors.

StateLine offers the scholarships to encourage youth in north Iowa and southern Minnesota to continue their education after high school, and they would like to encourage students to consider some type of agricultural-related career.

This career choice does not need to be in production but could also include careers in fields such as finance or health in rural communities, as well as environmental or

agricultural research.

Students advancing their education through a technical program, as well as those attending a fouryear college, are welcome to apply.

Applications are currently available at the counselor’s office of area schools, any of StateLine’s locations, StateLine’s website: www.statelinecoop.com or can be obtained by calling StateLine at 515-924-3555. Completed applications must be turned in to StateLine Coop by February 28, 2015.

Quiz bowl team wins at Spirit Lake

The North Iowa quiz bowl teams had a successful day on Saturday, Dec. 6, at a tournament in Spirit Lake. The varsity team consisting of Connor Smith, Jami Goetz, Austin Paden and Zach Dirksen won the tournament, with 16 teams competing in their division. The JV team also had a good day, as Aaron Embrock, Noah Melz, Natalie Dirksen and William Roeder were among the final four teams out of 18 teams competing in their division. Monthly music sessions continue at HTC

Area musicians got together at the Heritage Town Center last Thursday, Dec. 11, for their second monthly Blue Grass/Gospel Jam. About 85 people came out for the event, and many of those attending also enjoyed a meal served by the Buffalo Center Historical Society. The Heritage Museum was also open that night, featuring the new church exhibit. The next Blue Grass/Gospel Jam is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22.

North Iowa Betterment hosted a fundraiser meal during the first home basketball of the season last Friday, Dec. 12 at North Iowa High School.

Money raised through the fundraiser will go toward the various programs and activities sponsored by North Iowa Betterment, including Girls’ Club, Firecracker Days, Santa’s Workshop, kids’ Halloween activities, sports activities and more.
