Recorder’s Office Closed

GARNER – The Hancock County Recorder’s Office will be closed on Friday, Nov. 14 for software upgrade.

Garner Community Thanksgiving

GARNER - The annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored by all Garner area churches will be Thursday, Nov. 27.

This year’s dinner will be held at that Garner United Methodist Church. For those dining at the church, dinner will be served from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.

The menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes and dressing, gravy, squash, green bean casserole, salads, pies and beverage.

Carry-out dinners may be picked up from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

The dinner is open to area residents: Hancock County, Ventura and Forest City. Reservations to attend the dinner are requested. Absentee ballots for special GHV school election

Michelle K. Eisenman, Hancock County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, announces that absentee ballots for the Special School Election for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Community School district to be held Tuesday, Dec. 2 will be available in the Hancock County Auditor’s Office beginning Nov. 5.

Any eligible voter may cast an absentee ballot at the Auditor’s office or may submit a written request for an absentee ballot. Requests should be sent to the Hancock County Auditor’s office, 855 State Street, P.O. Box 70, Garner, Iowa 50438. The Drama Department at West Hancock High School will be looking at the humorous side of a more serious topic this weekend when they present Spirit! this Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.

The play, which takes place within the halls of the Eastview Care Center, tells the story of Clara Panowski, an adventurous old lady who won’t let life in a nursing home bring her down.

“Clara really longs for more than her existence allows,” said Play Director Glee Christ. “She is the one who tries to bring the fun and spirit to the facility.”

The plot follows Clara’s plans and sneakiness to disobey the home’s administrator, Miss Monoe, a traditional person who likes to stick to the rules.

“Clara is always trying to break the rules of the traditional care center,” said Christ. “She doesn’t want to go outside of the norms because she is afraid of the home getting a bad reputation.”

“She is concerned people will think her nursing home is a joke,” said Elizabeth Eckels, who plays Monoe. “She is a bit of a perfectionist as the manager.”

Veterans Day honors those who served The signing of the armistice that ended World War I - took place at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, 1918. This day became known internationally as “Armistice Day.” Twelve years later, Armistice Day became a national holiday.

This year, Veterans Day falls on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Community Veterans Day observances will be held as scheduled: Garner The 61st annual Veterans Day program will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11 10:30 a.m. at the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School gymnasium.

Jack Bertilson, student body president, will give the welcome.

Senior class president Mackenzie Haag will lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the “Start Spangled Banner” sung

by the GHV Honor Choir.

Posting of colors will be by the Garner Ceremonial Unit.

Grace Tusha, senior class vice president, will give an explanation of Veterans Day. Music will be provided by GHV honor choir and concert band.

The guest speaker will be Dave Theiss of Clear Lake. Theiss was one of the organizers of the Honor Flights to Washington D.C. for area veterans. The Veterans Day program will include a video presentation on the Honor Flight program.

Platform guests include American Legion Commander John Tammen, President of the American Legion Auxiliary Noreen Jenkins, VFW Commander Gary Madsen, President of the Garner VFW Auxiliary Connie Heinen, Mayor Ken Mick and Superintendent Tyler Williams.

Veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghan conflicts, peacetime veterans and current service personnel will be recognized.

At 11 a.m. there will be a moment of silence, followed by “Taps” and retiring of the colors.

G-H Elementary Assembly A Veteran’s Day assembly for Garner-Hayfield students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11. The winners of the VFW Auxiliary essay contest will be announced at that time.

Britt The Veterans Day program at the West Hancock High School will be will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m.

A Veteran’s Day program will be held at the Summit House in Britt at 6 p.m., Tuesday.

Council considers animal control ordinance Rebecca Peter

Joni Ernst, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate made a pre-election campaign stop at Garner, Oct. 30. Ernest was introduced by 3rd District Congressman Tom Latham. Mid-term elections were Tuesday, Nov. 4.

GARNER – How many cats or dogs someone can own are too many? The first reading of a proposed ordinance limiting the number of dogs or cats a person could own or harbor at one time over a period of a year was held during the Oct. 28 Garner City Council meeting.

The ordinance also requires pet owners or walkers to clean up and dispose of animal feces and prohibits feeding animals not their own.

The issue is the number of feral cats roaming the streets of Garner, and complaints from residents concerning animal feces being left on the street and lawns, according to city officials.

The ordinance prohibits owning or

harboring more than six dogs or cats over 12 months of age, or keep more than ten dogs or cats under two months of age at any one time or for more than 50 days. Licensed, commercial boarding kennels are exempt.

Violations would be considered a municipal infraction.

City administrator Randy Lasing said feeding strays just compounds the problem. The first place people call with animal complaints is city hall, he said.

The city currently has an ordinance prohibiting pet owners from allowing dogs and cats from running at large.

However, enforceability of the ordinance was questioned by some attending the meeting.

IMT announces new Ernst campaigns in Garner director of sales

GARNER – Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, Joni Ernst of Red Oak, made an 11th hour campaign stop and spoke to a crowded room of supporters at the Garner Education Center, Thursday, Oct. 30.

Ernst was running against Democrat Bruce Braley for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by long-time senator, Tom Harkin (D), who is retiring.

Ernst was wrapping up a 30-day, 99-county tour. “I believe this is a great way to reach out and visit with the people of Iowa and understand what they’re thinking,” she said.

“We are doing very well in the State of Iowa. The policies we have implemented are building Iowa and creating the opportunity for prosperity.”

Ernst has served in the Iowa Senate for the past 4 years. “We have balanced our budget for 4 years in a row.

We made the hard decisions,” she said.

“We can’t spend more money than we take in as a family. We shouldn’t do it as a state and we shouldn’t do it as the federal government either.”

“We also worked on job-killing rules and regulations. We now have more Iowans working than at any point in our history.”

Ernst said the country is at a crossroads. “We have to decide, do we do it the Iowa way which is opportunity for prosperity? Or the President Obama/ Washington D.C. way of Congressman Braley and hurting jobs.”

Ernst is a 22-year veteran of United States Army Reserve and the Iowa National Guard. She served from 20032004 as a company commander at the

start of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait and Iraq.

“The boots on the ground we had over there – my boots and other soldiers’ boots – that is now held by ISIS [the terrorist movement known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria].

“All of our American blood, sweat and tears is virtually for nothing,” she said.

She was critical of Braley’s vote “to defund our troops as they were serving in combat overseas.”

“You do not vote to defund our [military] men and women when their lives are on the line,” she said. “We certainly do not want signal to these terrorists that we as the American people don’t support them.”

Ernest was introduced by Iowa 3rd District Congressman Tom Latham.

Latham, who is also retiring from office, represented Iowa’s 4th Congressional District from 2003 to 2013 and the 5th District from 1995-2003.

“This election is absolutely critical that we change direction in this country,” Latham said. “It is very scary what is happening in Washington.

Latham said the election is a referendum on the Obama administration policies “There’s a clear, clear difference. It’s about national security. It about economic security.”

In other business the Garner City Council: •Set Nov. 11 as the date for a hearing on a general obligation loan agreement in connection to the library remodel/ expansion project. •Held the first reading on a flood plain management plan. City administrator Randy Lansing explained that in order for property owners to be eligible for national flood insurance, the city has to participate in the flood insurance program.

•Held the first reading of an ordinance that prohibits planting trees in the street right-of-way. Exceptions are: Lyon Street, Seymour Ave. between Hwy.18 and the railroad tracks, State St between 6th and Lyon, and West 3rd between Division and Hwy. 69.

Marline Lewerke was concerned about how such an ordinance could be monitored. She suggested a program of spaying and neutering.

Councilman Dennis Drabek was of the opinion that something needs to be done about the problem. Other cities already have animal control ordinances in place, he said.

The first reading of the animal control ordinance was held with Councilmen Drabek, Lynn Smith and Tim Schmidt voting in favor. Council member Deb Schmidt voted nay. A second reading is scheduled for the Nov. 11 city council meeting.

Development projects Public hearings involving three development projects were scheduled for 7 p.m., Nov. 25. Projects include: •A development agreement with Stellar Industries for construction of an addition to its American Eagle facility, with tax increment rebate payments of approximately $65,000.

•A development agreement with GMC Lease, LLC, for construction of an apartment complex (Harmony Estates) on the former Army Reserve property, with tax increment payments of approximately $275,000.

•City participation in extension of a natural gas line by Alliant Energy to Touchstone Industrial Park in an amount not to exceed $120,000.

Movie Madness

Are we at the saturation point yet?

Last week Marvel Studios put on a big show to announce their line up for Phase Three of their cinematic universe. Nine new movies to run through 2018. Shortly before that, at a Time Warner investors meeting of all places, Warner Bros. announced their movie plans for D.C. adaptations through 2020.

Between the two of them, there are more than twenty upcoming films that will hit theaters through the rest of the decade. So next time somebody asks you what your “five year plan” is, you can tell them it looks something like this.

2015 wraps up Marvel’s Phase Two with “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and the awkwardly placed “AntMan.” In 2016, things start out big with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” All of Warner Bros.’ chips are on this one, as it will set-up virtually everything in the rest of their line-up. A success will put Warner Bros. on track to finally set up a cinematic universe of their own. A failure could cause the rest of their plans to crumble like a house of cards.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has decided to copy Warner Bros. for a change. Much like how Batman was inserted into what was supposed to be a sequel to “Man of Steel,” Robert Downy Jr.’s Iron Man will co-star as a semi-antagonist in “Captain America: Civil War.” The rest of the year will be a little more obscure. Warner Bros. has made the unusual choice of following their Batman vs. Superman movie with “Suicide Squad,” a movie about a team of c-list super-villains forced into doing the government’s dirty work. (Coincidently enough, Sony’s “Sinister Six,” a movie about a team of Spider-Man foes, will come out later that year.) Marvel, on the other hand, will introduce “Doctor Strange” to the movie universe, possibly played

by Benedict Cumberbatch.

In 2017 Marvel Studios will start upping their game to three movies per year, starting with a sequel to the insanely successful “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Originally scheduled for July of that year, the movie has been bumped up to May 5. “Thor: Ragnarok” has instead taken that July 28 spot.

In June, Warner Bros. will finally put “Wonder Woman” in theaters, giving us the first comic book movie with

a female lead since 2005’s “Elektra.”

Later in November, Marvel will answer with “Black Panther,” giving us the first comic book movie with a black lead since 2004’s “Blade: Trinity.”

But the biggest movie of the year will undoubtedly be “Justice League, Part 1” on November 17.

2018 starts fast with “The Flash,” which will sadly not be a movie adaptation of the new CW show.

More importantly, May will bring us “The Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1.”

Foreshadowing the Infinity Gauntlet has been the thread tying the Marvel Studios movies together since we first saw Thanos back in “The Avengers.”

In the comic book, Thanos literally kills half the universe before the combined forces of Earth’s heroes manage to put things right. I expect the movie adaptation to set up equally high stakes.

But there’s a full year between Part 1 and Part 2. In between, Marvel Studios will finally release their first female led movie. Not the much requested solo Black Widow film, but the almost equally requested “Captain Marvel.” Unfortunately for me, this movie about a human getting alien superpowers probably means that my own wish for a Nova movie will be put on the back burner.

Later in the year, Marvel Studios will release “Inhumans,” who will be the stand-in for the X-Men since they can’t use those characters in the movies. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. will put “Aquaman” into theaters, testing former “Game of Thrones” actor Jason Momoa’s ability to make people afraid of a guy who talks to fish.

2019 starts with D.C.’s own Captain Marvel, who for legal reasons is now called “Shazam.” The summer of 2019 will be huge though as movie goers will not only get the conclusion to “The Avengers: Infinity War,” but also the second part of the “Justice League” movie.

Finally, while Marvel hasn’t announced anything for Phase Four, Warner Bros. already has “Cyborg” and “Green Lantern” on the slate for 2020.

And all of this doesn’t even take into

account the X-Men and Spider-Man related films that Fox and Sony have planned for the future. All together, there are at least thirty movies in development to enjoy, or pan, for the next five years.

We sure have come a long way since I was a kid, when one good movie a year was considered an achievement.

Still, I have to wonder if we’re starting to approach critical mass. I personally have no issue with heading to the theater once every couple months, but something has to give eventually, right?

Oh well, either way it’ll be a fun ride while it lasts.

To our Faith communities: please check in on your members and those known to you who have experienced loss. Have a rotation of meals provided for the first few months, not just weeks. Have weekly phone calls made to check on how the person or family grieving is doing. Arrange visits. Don’t be afraid to speak of the deceased. Allow the people grieving to cry in front of you. Silence can be very supportive and healing. Your caring presence is often enough. Offer help with chores, housekeeping, and childcare.

When grief or sadness is so profound that the person grieving cannot do their normal daily activities, it is time to seek out professional help. Don’t be afraid to ask for that help. And don’t be afraid to suggest that someone get that help. As a community, we can help each other move forward with respect and tenderness.

How do we keep going to work or care for other family members when we are so deeply sad inside? How do we face tomorrow? We all grieve differently and take a different amount of time to go through the grief process. Some folks retreat into their shells, while others want company. It’s okay to ask for what you need. Waldorf College Theatre to present a modern Comedy of Errors FOREST CITY - Waldorf College Theatre Department will present an updated version of the Shakespeare production of A Comedy of Errors November 19-22, as part of its 201415 theatre season. The slapstick comedy which features a shipwreck, lost twin brothers, mistaken identities and a happy ending, is originally set in the Greek city of Ephesus during the classical era; the Waldorf College Theatre Department’s production will be set

in South Beach Miami, Florida, in the 1930s. “We’ve decided to update the play a bit for some aesthetic reasons,” Dr. David Sollish, head of Shakespeare studies and assistant professor of theatre. “Making this production more approachable for our audience.”

Coin and stamp club exhibit coming to North Iowa

A free admission coin show will again be held at the Best Western Holiday Lodge in Clear Lake on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Southern Minnesota Coin and Stamp Club Association (SMCSCA), this family event will bring in 20 dealers from Iowa, Southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities.

Sponsors are expecting 30 tables of coins, stamps, currency, tokens, gold, silver and collecting supplies.

This is the largest, twice-a–year coin show in North Iowa. The SMCSCA is a not for profit group which pro-

Children are invited to join a Lime Creek Naturalist for a fun-filled adventure. Participants will be sent on a treasure hunt around the Lime Creek Nature Center trails. G.A.I.N. is sponsored by the Lime Creek Nature Center and Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board. The target audience for these monthly programs is elementary-age children accompanied by an adult. The goal is to provide a natural area and guidance for parents and their children to get exercise and experience nature.

Halloween fun at Mentoring Pumpkin Carve The One-On-One Mentoring Project hosted the annual Pumpkin Carve.

The event was a huge success for those who attended.

“We had 24 mentors, mentees and parents who participated in the Pumpkin Carve, held at the Garner Library,

Senior Citizens Center Sunday, Oct. 26,” said Shirley Brown, mentoring program coordinator. “The youth, mentors and parents carved faces and messages on a total of 24 pumpkins to put on their porches this Halloween.

All participants enjoyed refreshment

and snacks, and are looking forward to doing it again next year.”

Brown thanked Don Fix of Mason City for donating the pumpkins, the Garner Public Library for their support, and all the mentors and parents.

Iowa’s Electric Cooperatives ask candidates, “What is your view on America’s energy future?”

DES MOINES, Iowa —Today the rural electric cooperatives of Iowa launched a service project to educate their member-consumers about the Iowa congressional candidates’ positions on energy issues. In a series of advertisements called “Who Keeps Your Lights On” the rural electric cooperatives urge readers to view the responses from the candidates in the race for U.S. Senate and Iowa’s First and Third Congressional Districts.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher this year in terms of energy policy,” said

Marion Denger, board president for the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives. “Our local cooperatives power the lives of 650,000 member-consumers who are concerned about affordable and reliable electricity and the future of rural Iowa.”

The educational candidate surveys asked five basic questions about advancing the country’s baseload elec-

tricity generation capacity and other ideas for strengthening rural America.

They were going to the Des Moines, Iowa area to attend the wedding of cousin and nephew, Christian Grandgenett, formerly of Algona and his bride, Tess Weaver. Along with many other Grandgenett family members, Dan and Judy were to join in the joyous occasion with their children Joe Grandgenett of North Branch, Minnesota and Amy Grandgenett of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and Amy’s boyfriend, Caleb Fox of Maple Grove, Minnesota. CWL Elementary Red Ribbon Week

By Judy Grandgenette The kids at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne Elementary building in LuVerne were very excited on Thursday, October 30. They have been celebrating Red Ribbon Week all week long. They have been taking pledges to not take drugs or participate in bullying. They made red construction paper strips with their pledges written on them.

They were then linked together symbolizing strength when they are linked into a chain.

The excitement increased when two of the Algona Police came to visit with their K9 dogs. Officer Ben Gatton brought his dog Puma and Officer Mark McGregor brought his dog Yoshi. Before they brought the dogs individually into the building they

explained how they train the dogs. It is a different type of training as they teach the dogs to bite. The dogs are trained to go after people, the perpetrators. Actually the dogs feel they are playing during the training as they are going after a ball. Officer Gatton and McGregor showed the equipment they use in the physical training of their K9 dogs including leather muzzles. Protective clothing is always used whether a hard-bite sleeve, newspaper bites or whole body suit.

When it was finally time to meet the K9’s they brought Puma in first. She is two years old and is a Dutch Shepherd from Holland and weighs only about 40 pounds. The dogs don’t like slippery floors so the officers put some mats on the gym floors giving the dogs

a better footing. Yoshi is a German Shepherd who is three years old and weighs 110 pounds. It was shown how the dogs can sniff out drugs. Some of the drugs they are trained to find are marijuana, heroin, ecstasy, crack cocaine. They also are trained to smell items to help find people, such as lost children or an assailant. The dogs are born overseas and mostly trained in their home country. The voice commands the officers use are in their native language. Puma is a smaller dog and could live up to fourteen years old.

Yoshi maybe about nine years old. After the assembly each class got to have a picture taken with the officer and the dogs.

Lee Rouson Visits CWL

By Judy Grandgenette On Wednesday, Oct. 29, I attended an assembly at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne Middle School and High School building. I was told that a former professional football player was going to speak. The assembly wasn’t what I had expected from a pro ball player. Lee Rouson is truly an inspirational speaker. He did share a few of his stats from his football career, but it was never in an arrogant way. A majority of what he had to say to the student body and staff gathered was about personal character. One phrase Lee used was only three words long.

He asked “Who Are You?” He said he had been asked that many times in his life, as a young man he would answer that with, Black, a running back, among other things. One of the other questions he asked the students was: “Are you ready for the Game of Life?”

He spoke of choices and consequences.

Some facts about Lee Rouson are that he is a former professional American football running back. He played for the NFL’s New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns. Before his professional career, he started out in college, playing for the University of Colorado. He had been recruited by them from high school. He told

the kids how he had been promised so many things as a young man going into college sports. After signing with Colorado, he found out they, the college sports program, was on probation. Feeling very disappointed, he questioned his decision. Talking about being a young black man, born in the 60’s, growing up in the 70’s, and being from the south, how attitudes were expected from him and others. He now states how there is only One Race the Human Race. We all want to be loved and to love. That we all need to realize that we don’t know everything and we need to learn. Continue being a learner. He used the analogy of the movie “Groundhog Day”, how the newscaster thought he was the best and no one

was better than him. Repeating the day over and over and learning he could be bad to others or he could change, learn and choose to be someone worth knowing. Be REAL, don’t compare yourself to people in magazines. Lee mentioned how his first meeting with Jerry Rice as a young man changed some of his thinking. When he introduced himself to Jerry, he asked “Who are you?”, Jerry answered, “I am the Best wide receiver in the NFL”. At this time Jerry was only in college.

Lee learned that day that he had to DECIDE who he was going to be before he could become that person.

Lee left the kids with his stats card, asking them to sign it, using it as an example of what their lives could be if they think about their choices in life. He told them to learn to hear with the “ear” in their heart. Be their own translator in their life. He spoke how changing his attitude and realizing he needed God in his life has changed so much for him. And now being the dad and husband that his family needs is the person he wants to be known for, besides his career. I was very impressed Lee’s talk and would highly recommend if you ever have the chance to hear him speak to attend. I believe the students enjoyed his inspirational advice.

GARNER – Farmers and landowners will learn about the new programs authorized by the Agricultural Act of 2014 (commonly referred to as the Farm Bill) at an informational meeting conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and local USDA Farm Service Agency staff members.

The Farm Bill – Program Overview meetings will focus on the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) that will be administered by USDA Farm Service Agency, and the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) administered by USDA Risk Management Agency through federal crop insurance providers.

“We are prepared to discuss deci-

sions farmers and landowners will need to make in the coming months as they consider all their options,” said Kevin Leibold, farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “We’ll cover the timeline for when decisions need to be made along with information about our online Farm Bill decision tools.”

The main topics that will be covered during the meetings are: Base reallocation; Yield updating; Price Loss Coverage (PLC); Ag Risk Coverage (ARC); Implications of PLC and ARC on participation in the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO); Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP); Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP).

The 2014 Farm Bill Program Overview Meeting will be held in Garner on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. at the Viaduct Center located in the basement of the USDA building, 255 US Highway 69 S. Cost for the event is free. Preregistration is required and can be completed by contacting the ISU Extension and Outreach Hancock County Office at 641-923-2856.

West Hancock students get dictionaries West Hancock Vocal Concert, Tuesday, Oct. 28 Emilie Jenson

That is a new lesson West Hancock third grade students learned as they explored their new dictionaries, presented to them Thursday morning by the Algona Kiwanis Club.

Mark Holmer, representing the Algona Kiwanis presented the class with student dictionaries and explained that the word reference book can be used for so much more. He encouraged the students to think of the dictionaries as tools.

“These dictionaries are a tool,” Holmer told them. “They are just as handy to have around as a hammer and wrench.”

Holmer had students turn to the back pages of their dictionaries to look beyond the words and see what else they could reference from the book. There, they found biographies, maps, a list of the 50 states, planets and the longest word in the English language.

“When you go to another state or country you can grab your dictionary and look it up,” he said.

The students were introduced to some interesting new words, such as onomatopoeia, which they looked up.

When they were finished with their dictionary lesson, they played “stump the adults,” looking up their own words to see if the four adults in the classroom knew the definitions, words such as confederation, subterranean, plethora, stark, and impeachable were their new words of choice.

Third grader Evan Boothroyd said he did learn a few things with his new dictionary.

to hint at what is happening.”

The cast also includes Emma Chizek as Esther, Tre Lehoe as Joe Johnston, Nate Jackson as Mr. Dobbins, Sam Smith as the police officer and Miriam Garcia as Frances Wells.

Showtimes Friday and Saturday are 7 p.m. with a Sunday performance at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and will be available at the door.

Funeral scheduled for Elaine Schmidt Elaine Schmidt, daughter of Leonard and Ann Brozik, passed away on Satur-

day, March 29, 2014, in Mesa, Arizona. A memorial service was held for Elaine on Saturday, April 5, 2014, in Mesa. A funeral will be held at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, interment at St. Boniface Cemetary at a later date.

Terry Taylor Terry Taylor, 72, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at the Iowa Veterans

Garner residents trick or treat for God’s Pantry Garner residents banded together Sunday afternoon, Oct. 26 to trick or treat for God’s Pantry, raising $1141.78 to help feed their neighbors.

Although cash donations were encouraged (due to children canvassing), many canned goods were also donated. God’s Pantry is an ecumenical mission supported by all the churches in the Garner area.

Adults and children, some in costume, canvassed Garner for two hours, then returned to enjoy a meal of sloppy joes, chips, bars, cookies, candy and drinks.

Terry was born on January 14, 1942 to Herbert and Marvyle (Simmons) Taylor in Forest City, IA. He graduated from Forest City High School and attended Hamilton Business College. Terry served his country in the United States Air Force. He was employed with Sheraton Inn as a desk clerk and night auditor.

Terry was a member of the United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir.

He was also a member of the VFW. Terry enjoyed working with leather, plating cards, fishing, and crossword puzzles.

Terry is survived by a sister, Colleen Taylor of Waterloo, two brothers, Ross (Denise) Taylor of Iowa City and Doug (Barb) Taylor of Menasha, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Judy A. Nedved

GARNER – Judy A. Nedved, 66, of Garner passed away on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Memorial services will be held at Judy Nedved 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating.

Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

A memorial visitation was held “place” from 4 to p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, photo here at St. Boniface Catholic Church with a rosary at 4 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Judy Ann Nedved, daughter of Clifford and Deloris (Paul) Nelson, was born January 18, 1948 in Rush City, 1948 - 2014 Minn. She attended school at North Services: Branch, Minn., where she graduated Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 10:30 a.m. from high school in 1966. After high St. Boniface Catholic Church school, she moved to California where Garner she met her first husband. To this Arrangements By: union three daughters were born. The Cataldo Funeral Home family lived in Cloquet, Minn., before moving to Garner in 1976. On March 26, 1982 she was married to Jerry Nedved at Prior Lake, Minn. They lived in Garner all of their married life.

Judy was employed at Sperry Univac in Clear Lake, Farm Bureau in Garner and from 1993 to 2010 with her husband, Jerry, in their accounting business in Garner. Judy enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s activities, golfing, bowling and playing bridge.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church where she was an organist for many years. Judy also was a member and past officer of the Garner Women’s Golf Association.

Judy is survived by her husband, Jerry, of Garner; three daughters, Molly (Chad) Schaeffer of Fort Dodge, Katie (Chad) Peterson of Ankeny and Annie (Chris) Greenslade of Adel; eleven grandchildren, Hannah, Drew and Caleb Schaeffer, Trae and Ty Eenhuis, Connor, Lisa and Kayla Peterson and Carter, Claire and Callen Greenslade; two brothers, Tom (Shelly) Nelson of Bow, Wash., and John (Karen) Nelson of Harris, Minn.; her mother-in-law, Dorothy Nedved of Garner; three brothers-in-law, Larry Nedved of Plano, Texas, Vern (Pam) Nedved of Humboldt and Randy (Jill) Nedved of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant son, Brian.

Memorials may be directed to St. Boniface Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

CITY OF GARNER COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS UNAPPROVED MINUTES OCTOBER 28, 2014 The City of Garner Council met in regular session on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Mayor Mick called the meeting to order at 7:00pm.

• Minutes – October 14th Regular • Liquor License Renewal – Casa Patron Bill Paulus, representing the Garner Golf Course Foundation, was present to answer questions regarding their September financials.

Danielle Graham from the Garner Volunteer Ambulance Service presented the Council with a check for $323 for FY 2014 ambulance runs and gave a brief update on ambulance activities and shared their continuing need for volunteers.

Motion by Denny Drabek, seconded by Deb Schmidt to approve Resolution #2014-64 SETTING A PUBLIC HEARING ON A GENERAL OBLIGATION LOAN AGREEMENT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $400,000 for November 11, 2014 at 7pm, Ayes: Denny Drabek, Deb Schmidt, Tim Schmidt, Lynn Smith, Nays; none, Absent: George Smith.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO MODIFY A PERMIT AUTHORIZING THE USE OF WATER FOR GENERAL MUNICAPAL PURPOSES IN HANCOCK COUNTY, IOWA Notice is hereby given that pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 455B, there is now on file with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Water Supply Engineering Section, 502 # 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50319 an application as described below.

1. The City of Crystal Lake, IDNR Log. No: 27,861, requests a modified water use permit authorizing withdrawals of water from two existing Devonian Cedar Valley Limestone wells, each approximately 4-inches in diameter and 300 feet deep, on land generally described as the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 16 T97N, R25W, Hancock County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 19.5 million gallon per year at a maximum rate of 85 gallons per minute throughout each year for municipal purposes within and without permittee’s corporate limits, consistent with its municipal distribution system and incorporated service agreement/s, and other provisions of law.

2. This permit modification represents an increase to the authorized maximum quantity from 11.5 million gallons per year to 19.5 million gallons per year, and a change upwards in the instantaneous withdrawal rate from 75 gallons per minute to 85 gallons per minute. The modification also incorporates a previously-drilled Devonian well as outlined in the above text.

The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 567) and recommends the permit be granted. A copy of the summary report for the application is available upon a request to the Department at the address listed above.

Commends on the report and on this use of water must be received by November 24, 2014, and should be addressed “ATTN.: Water Supply Engineering Section” and should specify the applicant’s log number.

Blue Ribbon Raisin Apple Hand Held Pies Servings: 16 individual pies Raisin apple filling: 1 1/2 cups chopped tart apples 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons water 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 3/4 cup California raisins 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon granulated white sugar

Egg wash: 1 egg Pinch of salt For filling, combine apples, brown sugar, water, lemon juice and raisins in 2-quart saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes until apples are just tender. Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt and spices together well, and add liquid from cooking apples to make slurry.

Then, add all to pan with apples and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and butter. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile for pastry, measure flour, sugar, salt and cinnamon into large bowl and with pastry blender, fork or two knives, cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing after each addition until flour is moist and dough just holds together. Turn onto lightly floured surface; knead together and shape into flattened disk.

Divide into 4 equal pieces; wrap separately in plastic wrap or wax paper and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375°F. On lightly floured surface, roll out pastry dough, one piece at a time, and cut each piece into 4 small rounds with 3 1/2- or 4-inch cookie cutter. Place 1 scant tablespoon filling just below center on each piece; moisten edges and fold over, sealing edges with fork. Arrange on baking sheet and prick tops of each handheld pie in several places with fork or cut one small slit with sharp knife. Beat 1 egg with pinch of salt for egg wash and brush onto pies. Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned. Cool and serve.

Spicy Cranberry Pork Tenderloin Servings: 6-8 2 pork tenderloins, about 1 pound each 2 limes Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 (12-ounce) bag fresh cranberries 2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped Preheat oven to 400°F. Finely grate zest from limes. Juice limes (about 4 tablespoons). In small bowl, mix half lime zest (about 2 tablespoons)

with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Brush tenderloins with oil.

Place tenderloins in nonstick roasting pan, fat side up. Roast, flipping them over after 8 minutes. Add lime zest mixture to top, and continue roasting until digital meat thermometer reads between 145°F. (medium rare) and 160°F. (medium), about 35-40 minutes.

Meanwhile, in medium saucepan, mix 1 cup water with cranberries, brown sugar, jalapeno and remaining lime zest and juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until berries have burst and juices thickened, about 5 minutes. Set aside.

Transfer pork to carving board and let stand for 3-5 minutes. Meanwhile, in roasting pan, bring cranberry sauce to a boil over medium heat, scraping up any browned bits in pan with wooden spoon. Carve pork and serve with sauce.

Three Cardinals Earn NIC All-Conference Honors

Mackenzie VanGerpen 1st Team NIC Two sophomores and a senior earned post-season recognition as volleyball coaches from the North Iowa Conference released their all-conference rosters. Heading the list for the Cardinals with first team honors was Mackenzie Van Gerpen. Hannah Lau was named to the NIC’s second team list while Mallory Van Oort was GHV’s honorable mention selection.

Cardinal coach Kelsey Steffens summarized Van Gerpen’s accomplishments saying, “Mackenzie is an all-around volleyball player ending the conference season with 131 kills, 88 digs, 12 aces, and 18 blocks. As an outside hitter, she is a smart offensive player with her aggressive pushes to deep corners and her ability to run quick attacks. Mackenzie is a very coachable student-athlete who continually pushes herself and her teammates.”

Hannah Lau 2nd Team NIC Steffens noted that Lau was also very worthy of the all-conference recognition that she received. “Hannah does an excellent job of controlling the net. The team relies on the middles to put up a block so the defense can get set. Hannah was injured during the middle of season and did not play in five conference matches; if she had been healthy I think she could have been a contender for first team. Hannah ended the conference season with 82 kills and 17 blocks.”

Coach Steffens noted that Van Oort’s consistency throughout her high school career has been critical to GHV’s success in recent seasons.

“Mallory was an instrumental player in controlling our side of the court. As a libero Mallory was a consistent player who ended conference play with 13 aces and 143 digs. Mallory helped fill an important position on the team by

Steffens stressed the value of the team concept when considering the squad’s strong season. “While these three girls received all-conference recognition I would like to acknowledge the varsity team as a whole. The girls have truly been a team this year and have worked together to have a competitive, fun season. The team was blessed with many leaders who not only helped push the varsity team but helped challenge and direct our underclassmen.”

GHV finished the season fourth overall in the North Iowa Conference race.

2014 Eagle Volleyball Big Day at State for

The West Hancock volleyball team posted a 7-19 overall record for the 2014 season. The Eagles played a total of 69 sets, winning 16 under second year head coach Erin Brown.

The Eagles recorded a total of 350 kills, averaging five kills per set.

They served at 90.5% with 1,055 serves successfully put into play, including 103 aces for an average of 1.49 aces per set.

The Eagle setters put up 177 assists, averaging 4 per set. While the defense dug a total of 614 digs, 8.9 average, and the front line earned 58 solo blocks, 48 block assists for a total of 106.

West Hancock picked up wins over Hampton-Dumont (2-0), Mason City Newman twice (3-0 & 2-0), Eagle Grove (3-2), North Iowa (2-1), West Bend Mallard (2-0) and West Fork (2-0).

Macey Harms led the team in kills with 98, Cara Francis followed with 79, Jessica Ohrt 72, Emma Chizek 40 and Whitney Burgardt 34.

Mallory Becker recorded 161 assists, while co-setter Natasha Peterson had 78.

Ohrt put up 27 blocks this season, Chizek 20, Harms 19, Monica Loeschen 13 and Francis 12.

Bailey Eisenman led the defense with 137 digs. Burgardt dug 116 attacks, Francis 88, Alexa Cockrell 62, Becker 39, Harms and Ohrt both with 38, Loeschen 25, April Robbins 24, and Chizek and Peterson each had 20.

Ohrt served the most aces for the Eagles with 18, serving 92% going 164 for 178 from the service line.

Chizek and Harms each earned 13 aces (129/149 and 99/111 respectively).

Eisenman and Francis (123/135) each recorded 12 aces with Eisenman posting the best serving percentage on the team at 96%. She missed just seven serves this season placing 151 of 158 attempts into play.

Becker earned eight aces, Burgardt and Robbins each had six, Peterson four and Cockrell one.

West Hancock will graduate seven seniors from this year’s roster; Burgardt, Becker, Peterson, Cockrell, Harms, Ohrt and Eisenman.

GHV Boys Cross-Country When GHV cross-country coach Erik Jolivette assumed head coaching duties for the program last spring, he realistically knew that his Cardinal boys’ squad had some great potential. With an impressive nucleus of young runners on the roster, Jolivette no doubt couldn’t wait to learn what his squad could achieve. Throughout the season, the Cardinals steadily improved while building a strong resume of team titles and individual medals.

On Saturday, the GHV boys made history as they finished fourth overall in the Class 2A Cross-Country finals at Fort Dodge.

GHV junior Chase Smith has been leading the squad all season, recording a number of individual titles along the way. Smith continued to lead the Cardinals on Saturday by earning the second place individual medal against the top runners in the state. Smith finished the race in a time of 16:18.10 while sophomore Logan Dalbeck placed 19th overall with a time of 17:16.2.

Freshman Ray Cataldo finished 61st individually with a time of 18:07.5 and sophomore Johnathan O’Connor was 70th in 18:17.9. Completing the Cardinal roster were sophomores Austin Siegrist (77th, 18:24.8), Derek Brown (108th, 19:05.1) and Mason Wirtz (121st, 19:25.8). For team scoring purposes, unattached individual qualifiers were omitted from the overall placing list and those finishes are listed at the conclusion of this story.

Cardinal coach Erik Jolivette commented, ““The boys finished fourth in

Class 2A which is the highest any boys team has ever placed in this program.

Chase Smith earned runner-up honors and that is also the highest place ever attained by an individual. The entire varsity team returns next year, and I know they will be hungry to make a statement and take another shot at a championship. We could not be more proud of this team and the accomplishments they achieved on and off the courses this fall.”

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cheerleaders competed on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the ICCA State Cheerleading Championships held in Des Moines.

The cheerleaders competed in the 2A Cheer/Dance Division. They were judged on Choreography, Motions, and Dance, Tumbling and Jumps, as well as Stunting. The squad’s overall score was high enough to place them third in the division, but due to two safety penalties prior to competing, their place dropped to 6th. The members of the GHV Competition Squad included: Mackenzie Haag, Hannah Lau, Shelby Schroeder, Tiara VanGerpen, Bri Huinker, Danielle Nelson,

Autumn Weaver, Haley Suby, Autumn Prehn, Macy Crosser, Olivia Carew, and Meg Finley. The squad is coached

by Kristi Carew.

Honored at the State Competition were those cheerleaders selected for the Iowa All State Squad. GHV Cheerleader Mackenzie Haag was one of those selected for this prestigious squad. She tried out on October 18th at Ames High School and was judged on a tryout cheer, dance, jumps, and tumbling skills. Haag was selected from over 200 cheerleaders from around the state. This 33-member squad will perform at the Boy’s State Basketball tournament in March.

Eagle Football finishes 5-5

West Hancock football may have ended the season sooner than they had hoped, but the program will continue to move forward.

Despite the tough first round loss to Denver 35-14 last Wednesday, the Eagles’ 2014 season proved that they have the drive, focus and determination to continue to move forward and compete.

Trevor Nalan caught a 39 yard pass from Sonius for the first Eagle touchdown and Jordan Weiland ran in the second from the six yard line.

Dalton Bates ran in the successful two-point conversion.

Nalan caught three more passes in addition to the scoring reception for a total of 86 yards. Sonius completed five passes on the night for 108 yards, including a throw to Quinn Yeakel for 22 yards.

Bates ran for 82 yards on 22 carries, Weiland 13 times for 70 yards and Colton Francis 35 yards with nine attempts.

Sean Schmidt covered up for one fumble recovery.

Weiland led the defense with 11.5 tackles, Sonius followed with eight, Dallas Pearson seven including a sack, Ricardo Ibarra 6.5, Zach Johnson six, and Dylan Eckels four.

The Eagles won games over Lake Mills, North Union, Mason City Newman, North Butler and Bishop Garrigan.

The undergraduate class is the largest (4,666 students) and most diverse first-year class in UI history and is extremely academically accomplished.

Among the record-setting academic achievements of the first-year class includes having 523 Old Gold Scholarship recipients, compared to 398 in 2013. Old Gold Scholars must have a 30 ACT, (or combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330), as well as a 3.80 GPA on a 4.00 scale. The first-year class also has the highest ever average high school GPA of 3.63, compared with 3.62 in 2013.

Students at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) who received scholarships this year had an opportunity to show their gratitude during the 11th annual student Scholarship Recognition Luncheon held at the Muse Norris Conference Center on Monday, Oct. 6. Almost 200 students, donors and community members attended the event.

“This is an important tradition that allows scholarship recipients the opportunity to personally thank the donors who made the scholarships possible,” said Dr. Steven Schulz, NIACC President. “Each student has a unique story to tell and this year’s student speakers shared their own amazing stories.”

The recognition program featured comments from Tony Coloff, a scholarship donor. Coloff, who founded North Iowa Broadcasting along with his wife, Sue, started his comments to attendees by saying, “Today is your lucky day. Anytime you pursue higher education, it’s your lucky day! When I attended Mason City Junior College, now NIACC, not everyone had the opportunity to attend college. I was able to go to college because of NIACC, and I want to say you’ve all made the right choice.” Coloff continued, “When NIACC was established almost 100 years ago, unknown visionaries chose to pay it forward for future

Garner chamber welcomes new owners for NIPCO

GARNER – The Garner Chamber of Commerce welcomes Noordam Holdings, L.L.C., the new owners of North Iowa Printing Co. (NIPCO). Noordam Holdings purchased the business from Bob Sniezek who retired. The transaction became official, Oct. 10.

A “first dollar” presentation with representatives from the city and the Garner Chamber of Commerce was held Oct. 15.

“NIPCO was a good fit for us because of our experience in printing,” said Virginia Fransiscus, president of Noordam Holdings. “Our goal with time, is to model it after our sister company, Community QuickPrint. We believe in supporting our communities, and Garner is a community with a strong sense of self. That is an exciting thing to be a part of, and we hope that as we grow, with the community’s support, we can in turn offer our support to local organizations.”

Fransiscus described some of the plans for NIPCO. “We are going to continue to offer printing and office supplies,” she said. “With our capabilities in printing, we are expanding what we can offer with custom print jobs such as invitations, announcements, brochures, etc.”

In addition to that, we will donate back ten percent off all purchases from that section to the school,” Fransiscus said.

Danielle Goll will manage NIPCO. “Danielle is a Garner resident with a

strong background in office management as well as graphic design,” Fransiscus stated. “This is a great fit for our store, as she will be able to assist customers with the custom printing projects and ideas in addition to her management duties.”

A grand opening for NIPCO is planned for yet this year. Watch for an announcement.

Noordam Holdings L.L.C. was formed December 2013 and “does business as” Boxes Unlimited, the Main Street Mailer, and The Yard.

Fransiscus said copies of the Main Street Mailers are available at the NIPCO front counter or on the website www.msmnorthiowa.com.

Boxes Unlimited manufactures custom cartons. “[It is] another service we at NIPCO would like to make available to our customer base,” she said.

Informational farm meeting, Garner

Garner – Farmers and landowners will learn about the new programs authorized by the Agricultural Act of 2014 (commonly referred to as the Farm Bill) at an informational meeting conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and local USDA Farm Service Agency staff members.

The Farm Bill Program Overview meetings will focus on the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) that will be administered by USDA Farm Service Agency, and the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) administered by USDA Risk Management Agency through federal crop insurance providers.

The main topics that will be covered during the meetings are: • Base reallocation; • Yield updating; • Price Loss Coverage (PLC); • Ag Risk Coverage (ARC); • Implications of PLC and ARC on participation in the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO); • Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP); • Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP).

The 2014 Farm Bill Program Overview Meeting will be held in Garner on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Viaduct Center located in the basement of the USDA Building, 255 US Hwy 69S, Garner.
