Keota Swim Club Hosts Swim Meet Against Sigourney

The Keota Swim Club hosted a swim meet at the Keota Pool against Sigourney on Monday, July 21. Results and photos from the meet can be found on page 4.

Steak Dinner at VFW

The Veterans Memorial Steak Dinner was held at the Keota VFW on Saturday, July 26. The two winners of the Beef Raffle in Memory of Thomas Nebel were Kevin Wallerich and Cindy Detweiler.

Proceeds from the beef raffle and the steak dinner will go towards the Veterans Memorial.

Baumert Family Reunion Held

The descendants of the Oscar and Bessie Baumert family met for their annual reunion, Sunday, July 13, at Holy Trinity Parish Hall in Keota. There were 61 in attendance. Following the blessing

by Pastor Frances Baumert, a bountiful, cooperative dinner was enjoyed by all.

Genevieve Jaeger of Keota was the eldest in attendance and the youngest was thirteen month old Jordan Scott Baumert of Victor.

Get well cards were signed for Marilyn Van Fleet of North English, Darlene Streets of Gladbrook and the Margaret Burk family of Bucklin, Mo. The closest number of M&Ms in the jar was won by Dr. Paul Baumert, Jr. of Pleasant Hill. Everyone enjoyed playing bingo with many prizes given.

Little Abby Brower of Richland was a delight for all to see. Lots of picture taking and visisting rounded out the day.

The 2015 Baumert reunion will be held the second Sunday in July at the St. Mary’s Hall in Keota.

Vacation Bible School was held at the United Church of Faith with co-host Holy Trinity Catholic Church from Sunday, July 20 to Thursday, July 24.

The final program was held at 7:30 p.m. at the church on Thursday evening.

The participants of VBS spent the evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. learning, singing, dancing, and just having fun!

Public Notices Keota City Council Meeting

July 21, 2014 The Keota City Council met on July 21, 2014, in the city hall. The meeting was called to order at 7:01 P.M. by Mayor Anthony Cansler.

Council Members answering roll call were Greiner, Davis, Hill, Westendorf and Conrad.

City employee present was Osweiler. Officer Conrad was unable to attend and Slaubaugh was at the swim meet.

Motion was made by Conrad to approve the agenda, Davis seconded the motion. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Motion was made by Conrad, seconded

by Greiner to approve the minutes from the previous meetings. Motion carried unanimously.

There was no public works report.

Officer Doug Conrad submitted the following written report for the police department. He dealt with the following service calls and complaints: two burglaries, theft, vandalism, sex offenses, other criminal violations, traffic accident, two assist and service, two civil disputes, dog/cat/misc. animal, two traffic violation, two domestic abuse and two misc. complaints.

There were three minor violations during the pool inspection. Motion was made by Westendorf, seconded by Greiner to approve the police department’s written report. Motion carried with a unanimous vote.

Discussion of the United Church of Faith’s revised proposal was tabled until August 18ths meeting.

Discussion of golf cart and ATV ordinance was tabled until Officer Conrad could be present.

Motion was made by Westendorf to approve C.Brown’s demolition permit, Greiner seconded the motion. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Motion was made by Greiner to approve Resolution 2014-23: A Resolution Approving the Street Finance Report for 2013/2014; Westendorf seconded the motion. . A roll call vote was taken: “Ayes”- Greiner, Conrad, Davis, Westendorf and Hill and “Nays”-None. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Motion was made by Greiner to approve the cemetery report for 2013/2014, Davis seconded the motion. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.

C.Greiner resigned from the planning and zoning board. The council discussed different residents they thought would be an asset to the board. Osweiler will contact the residents about serving on this board.

Greiner made a motion to have two lawn care letters to the property owners; Davis seconded the motion. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Motion was made by Westendorf to pay all the bills, Conrad seconded the motion. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Osweiler was asked to draft an ordinance revising the disconnection of service to properties that are delinquent on paying their bill.

Slaubaugh was asked to look at the storm water covers around town to see if there is any way to make them safer.

Motion was made by Westendorf, seconded by Conrad to adjourn. Motion carried unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 8:34 P.M. The next regular scheduled council meeting will be on July 28, 2014, in city hall at 7 p.m.

Keokuk County Board Proceedings

JULY 21, 2014 The Keokuk County Board of Supervisors met in regular session, Monday, July 21, 2014 in the Board Room of the Courthouse. All members were present.

Hadley moved, Wood seconded to amend the tentative agenda to include the additional items of setting communication tower project public hearing time, date and place and communication tower project bid opening time, date and place. All ayes and motion carried amending the agenda. County Attorney Schroeder stopped in to discuss upcoming happenings regarding the 911 Coordinator replacement.

Wood moved, Hadley seconded to set Communications Tower bid opening for Monday, August 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., Drafting Room, First Floor, Keokuk County Courthouse. All ayes and motion carried. The project has three (3) specific designations: building of tower; generator for shelter and Sheriff’s Office and tower equipment.

Wood moved, Hadley seconded to approve the claim listing dated July 21, 2014 as submitted. All ayes and motion carried.

Various board and committee reports were held. Wood attended RUSS and South Iowa Area Crime Commission meetings. Hadley and Berg retrieved Keokuk County DHS filing cabinets from the Mahaska County DHS Office. Berg attended an English River Watershed meeting last week.

Discussion of old/new business and public comment was held regarding the Local Option Sales and Service tax that will be placed on the upcoming General Election in November.

On vote and motion the meeting adjourned at 9:40 a.m.

dren, grandchildren, and at the end, with her great grandson.

She loved to cook, gardening, working at Maplewood Manor in Keota, shopping, tanning, and just lookin’ good. She was an avid Nascar junky, a clean-aholic and being out on her new deck.

She is survived by her husband, Mark; brother: Tom Marshall of Pink Hill, N.C.; daughters: Christina Calkins of Coralville and Marie Etten of Williamsburg; step-son: Adam Clark of Sigourney; 11 grandchildren: Stephanie, Brian, Joshua, Allyson, Logan, Madison, Chloe, Brady, Jaidyn, Briana, Cory and one great grandson, Elijah.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; her brother Ernie and her grandson Brian Bird.

A Celebration of Life service is Thursday, July 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church gym with Pastor Jim Bringman.

News From Lagos Acres Lagos Acres board of directors are initiating a project to provide some events for all members of the community in addition to golf. You do not need to be a member to participate. A small fee will be charged to cover costs and hopefully some revenue for Lagos Acres. A committee has been established to co-ordinate these projects and they are open to ideas for what you would be interested in. The level of participation will determine whether this is a viable undertaking. Hopefully, this will provide some opportunities to gather as a community and provide socialization the year round.

Currently, their plans include: • “Live After Five”: The first Thursday of every month.

Have had one meeting on July 24th that was well attended and everyone expressed their enjoyment. It was coffee, cocktails (cash bar), and conversation. Snacks were provided for a donation. If you could RSVP it would be helpful but not required.

• Bunco: Tuesday, August 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Come and join this fun game of dice. If well attended will do monthly. All adults, both male and female, invited. Prizes will be given based on income from attendance. You can learn on site with us..

• “Live After Five”: Thursday, September 4th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Same as above.

Bridge: Sunday, • Partner September 21 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Party bridge with a partner of any gender or combination. Prizes for high, second high and low based on income from attendance.

Other ideas include a pepper tournament, soup suppers, game night, sponsor junior league golf, and some classes on cooking, exercise, etc., and a ladies salad luncheon with golf or cards afterward.

Area Softball 2014 All-Conference First Team SICL ConferenCe Sigourney Jordan Carter, Junior, Pitcher

One of the best all-around players around, Carter had an even more impressive season this year than she did as a sophomore. In 148 and onethird innings of work in the circle, Carter finished with a 2.31 ERA and a 17-7 mark, while allowing just 49 earned runs, 26 walks, and striking out 141. At the dish Carter had an equally impressive season., leading the conference with a .805 slugging percentage. She finished second in the SICL with a .519 batting average and was third on her team in walks with 14. Carter led the Savages with 35 runs and 40 hits, including five triples and 12 doubles.

Sigourney Becca ohland, Senior, Infield

Ohland, an excellent defensive shortstop, helped lead Sigourney to 23 win in 2014.

The senior finished sixth in the

conference with 38 hits, including 12 doubles, three triples and two homers. Ohland hit .409 on the season and drove in 17 runs, while stealing 13 bases.

Sigourney’s starting shortstop also scored 26 times this season and finished with an impressive .634 slugging percentage.

Tri-County Sara Gragg, Senior, Infield

Gragg, a senior, provided the Trojans with a solid veteran presence at shortstop and a dependable arm in the circle.

Gragg tossed 35 and one-third innings this season and finished with a 2-1 mark. Her bigger contribution, though, came on the offensive side of things.

The senior finished with 34 hits, including two doubles and a triple, and hit .378 for ten-win Tri-County. Gragg also scored 23 runs and was successful on all 21 of her steal attempts.

Sigourney Karah Appleget, Senior, outfield Appleget

excellent prep softball career with an impressive senior season that included four homeruns.

In addition to her 25 RBIs, 23 runs and five doubles, Appleget finished her senior year with a solid .381 batting average.

The senior was successful on all eight of her steals attempts, had a .583 slugging percentage and effectively roamed centerfield for the second-place SICL Savages.

SeISC ConferenCe Pekin Madelyn Baker, Junior, Utility

Pekin’s starting third baseman and leading returning hitter from a year ago, Madelyn Baker came in with a .371 batting average and drew an impressive 22 walks as a junior.

Baker doubled eight times, tripled three times, homered once and drove in 18 runs to lead the Panthers to 16 wins. Baker’s defensive skill at third also helped pace Pekin to a solid season despite losing a majority of its starters from the prior season.

Little was named to the SICL’s Second Team as a pitcher, but her hitting was even more impressive than what she did in the circle as a freshman.

Little finished with eight wins and a 3.51 ERA in over 121 innings of work as a pitcher. At the plate Little led the Trojans in almost every offensive category. She batted .467 with a .540 on-base percentage and .667 slugging percentage this season. Little drove in 26 runs, stole 15 bases, homered once and doubled eight times.

TC’s center fielder batted .360 during her senior season with eight doubles, one homer and 15 RBIs. Garber scored 15 runs during the season and accumulated an impressive .415 on-base percentage. Her 31 hits ranked third on the team for the season.

english Valleys Taylor Gerard, Sophomore, Infield Second baseman Taylor Gerard broke out during her sophomore season. The lefty led the Bears with 34 hits and ten stolen bases on the year.

Gerard doubled just once, but finished the season with an excellent .470 on-base percentage. The sophomore scored 11 runs, drove in seven and walked five times.

english Valleys Audrey Grove, 8th, Utility One of the big surprises of SICL softball was the play of EV eighth-grader Audrey Grove.

Grove led the Bears with a .452 batting average and .726 slugging percentage. The eighth grader drove in a team high 21 runs, doubled 11 times and

Reighard led the Panthers with ten doubles and 27 RBIs, and she also went deep once. The sophomore finished with a .363 batting average, .396 on-base percentage and .505 slugging percentage. Reighard also tied for third on the team with 21 runs scored.

Pekin nikole Arendt, Sophomore, outfield The little lefty hit in Pekin’s number-two spot all season and did so effectively. Arendt’s .471 on-base percentage ranked second on the team, while her 22 walks tied for the most. Arendt batted .321 with two doubles and a triple, and she led Pekin in stolen bases with 18.

Pekin Ashlyn Zook, freshman, Pitcher Zook came onto the scene in splendid fashion as Pekin’s ace in the pitcher’s circle. In 111 and one-third innings of work, Zook allowed 38 earned runs, struck out 93 batters and finished with a 2.39 ERA. The freshman won 11 games for the Panthers and held opposing batters to a .182 average. Zook batted .333 and doubled four times at the plate.

2014 Baseball All-Conference Second Team SICL Baseball 2014 All-Conference First Team

English Valleys Brennen Grimm, Junior, Outfield

Grimm, a junior outfielder and pitcher for English Valleys, had one of the best seasons of anyone in the South Iowa Cedar League. Grimm finished fourth in batting in the conference with a .492 average. He finished with four homers, eight doubles, 18 RBIs and drew 12 walks. One the mound Grimm was solid as well. The junior picked up three wins and finished with a 4.29 ERA in 45 and two-thirds innings of work.

Sigourney Peyton Crawford, Sophomore., Outfield

The sweet-swinging sophomore ranked fifth in the SICL in

runs scored with 35. Crawford batted .385 on the season with eight doubles, 18 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. Sigourney’s starting left fielder and numberone pitcher drew an impressive 17 walks during his sophomore campaign and finished with a 2.93 ERA in 43 innings of work on the mound. Crawford help opposing batters to an impressive .146 average and tallied 68 strikeouts.

Tri-County Nick Watts, Senior, Infield

12 of Watts’ 26 hits on the season went for extra bases, helping him amass a .541 slugging percentage. The senior doubled ten times and tripled twice this past season, coming in with a .351 batting average.

Tri-County’s starting second

baseman also stole 16 bases, drove in ten runs and scored 30 times. Watts’ play helped the Trojans nail down a fourthplace SICL finish at 11-9.

English Valleys Adam Kerkove, Junior, Utility

Kerkove, a junior, had a fantastic all-around season for the EV Bears this summer. Kerkove batted .381 with six doubles, two homers and 16 RBIs for the ten-win Bears; his bigger contribution, though, came on the mound. The junior went 7-1 during the regular season with a 2.41 ERA in 61 innings of work. Kerkove ranked third in the SICL with 86 strikeouts and gave up just 21 earned runs.

Area Baseball 2014 All-Conference Second Team SICL CONfERENCE Tri-County Jake Brumbaugh, Junior, Pitcher Brumbaugh, a junior, was the winning pitcher of record in seven of Tri-County’s 12 wins this summer. In 59 and two-thirds innings Brumbaugh struck out a team high 64 batters and finished with an ERA of 2.58. At the dish Brumbaugh batted .301 with three doubles, a triple, a homer and 16 RBIs. The junior also stole 13 bases in 16 tries.

Tri-County Tyler Lally, Senior, Infield In addition to his two homeruns, 18 RBIs and .277 batting average, Lally showed great patience at the plate as a senior, drawing a team high 14 walks. On the mound Lally finished 4-4 with an excellent 1.83 ERA in just over 61 innings of work. The senior struck out 63 batters and held the opposition to a .193 batting average.

Tri-County Austin Blythe, Senior, Outfield Blythe, Tri-County’s center fielder, led the team in hits, with 29, and in RBIs, with 23.

The senior also had the best batting average of any Trojans at .372. Blythe scored 23 times, doubled five times and stole 18 bases on the season.

Sigourney Colby Kerkove, Junior, Infield The junior shortstop turned in the best season of his career thus far, leading the Savages with 27 RBIs and three homer-

uns. Kerkove also had the most hits of anyone on his team, with 35, seven of which were doubles. Kerkove finished the year with a .372 batting average and .543 slugging percentage.

Sigourney Shane Swearingen, Senior, Outfield Sigourney’s senior center fielder displayed great patience at the plate all season, drawing 27 walks to finish with an even .500 on-base percentage.

Swearingen batted .321 on the season, doubled six times and drove in 11. The lefty was also second on the team with 26 runs scored.

English Valleys Tanner Icenbice, Junior, Catcher

SEISC Baseball 2014 All-Conference First Team

Pekin Cole Reighard, Junior, Catcher

One of the top hitting catchers in the conference, Cole Reighard earned his way onto the First-Team All-SEISC North by hitting .319 with two homers, two doubles and 16 RBIs. Reighard scored 16 runs in 24 games and was successful on all seven of his stolen base attempts. The junior effectively caught one of the top pitching staffs in the area and helped the Panthers win 20 games.

Pekin Kolby Allsup, Senior, Infield

The slick-fielding shortstop anchored Pekin’s excellent defensive infield and batted

.414 to boot. In addition to his stellar defense night in, night out, Allsup hit eight doubles & one triple, drew 12 walks and drove in 15 runs. Allsup’s 36 hits, 30 runs and .500 on-base percentage each ranked second in the SEISC North behind only Louisa-Muscatine’s Austin Bohling.

Pekin Keaton Winn, Sophomore, Outfield

As good of a season as Pekin’s ace had on the mound, Winn had an equally impressive sophomore year at the plate.

Winn finished third in the conference in hits with 35, while coming in with a team-best .417 batting average. The sophomore also doubled eight times, homered twice and drove in 27 runs, which tied for second in the

SEISC North. On the mound Winn went 6-2 in 53 and onethird innings, while striking out 73, finishing with a 0.66 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .101 batting average.

Pekin Cade Millikin, Senior, Utility

The outfielder, pitcher and dependable hitter finished his senior season with an impressive .405 batting average and .476 on-base percentage. In addition to drawing eight walks and striking out only four times all year, Millikin doubled five times and drove in 20 runs.

Millikin also had a dynamite season on the hill. The senior finished 4-0 with a miniscule 1.13 ERA in 31 innings. Millikin walked only seven of the 121 batters he faced.

• Cody Seaton, Jr., 3B - .397 batting average, .462 on-base percentage, five doubles, one homerun, 18 RBIs, 20 runs, 21 steals.

Keota • Zach Mousel, So., CF/P - .286 batting average, .419 onbase percentage, ten hits, three doubles, eight walks, seven runs scored.

• Nate Sieren, So., 2B/P - .333 batting average, .382 onbase percentage, 17 hits, seven runs, six RBIs. Sigourney • Bryce Brown, Jr., DH - .282 batting average, .378 on-base

percentage, .449 slugging percentage, 22 hits, seven doubles, two homeruns, 26 RBIs, 15 runs scored, 12 walks.

• Jake Van Ee, Jr., P – 55 and one-third innings pitched, two wins/two losses, 3.92 ERA, 32 Ks, .184 opposing batting average.

Tri-County • Zach Kitzman, Sr., C - .221 batting average, .303 on-base percentage, 15 hits, one double, one triple, seven runs scored, 11 RBIs, seven walks.

EV’s man behind the plate for all 23 games, Tanner Icenbice had a tremendous offensive season as a junior. Icenbice finished tied for second among all Bears with a .492 on-base percentage, while batting .385 with a double and 11 walks.

Pekin’s everyday second baseman, Clubb represented one of the Panthers’ big bats in the number-two spot in the order.

Clubb batted .347 and had an on-base percentage of .478 as a senior. Clubb’s 27 runs were the second most of any Panthers, while his six doubles were third most. Clubb drew 17 walks, stole seven bases and drove in ten runs throughout his impressive senior campaign.

Clubb also tossed 13 and onethird innings on the mound and held a 2.10 ERA.
