An MLB All-Star ... at 10 years old Sawyer reaches Pitch, Hit, Run national final By JOHN JENSEN

Homes damaged in tornado near Reinbeck

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register REINBECK — Two homes received major damage but no injuries were reported Sunday evening as a tornado touched down just outside the Reinbeck city limits. According to the National Weather Service, the EF1 tornado formed at 7:58 p.m. 1.7 miles west northwest of Reinbeck. It touched down briefly on Highway T-55 just north of Highway 175, one mile west of the Reinbeck city limits. The tornado damaged crops and several buildings, including a pair of homes, one of which suffered roof damage and the other which suffered structural damage. No injuries were reported, though one handicapped individual was

transferred by Reinbeck Fire Department Ambulance from one of the damaged homes to an undamaged residence in the city limits. Sunday’s storm is the third to cause damage in Grundy County in eight days. Last Sunday, a storm caused tornado-like damage in Morrison, just three miles from the site of Sunday’s twister, while last Monday extreme winds blew down trees and power poles in southern and central Grundy County. Both of last week’s storms also caused flash flooding, leading the Grundy County Board of Supervisors Monday to approve a disaster declaration for the county. This week’s storms were not accompanied by the heavy rain that marked last week’s events.

The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — Many kids dream of playing Major League Baseball. For a Grundy Center 10-year-old, that dream will come true sooner than he ever could have imagined ... at least for a night. Brayden Sawyer is one of just 24 boys and girls nationwide to have qualified for the national finals of the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run contest, which will be contested at Target Field in Minneapolis the day before baseball’s midsummer classic, the All-Star Game. He survived local, regional and team rounds of competition to become one of just three finalists in his boys’ age group and the competition’s first finalist from Iowa since 2011. “When we started this thing, none of us knew what we were getting into,” Brayden’s mom Kristy said. “We had Pitch, Hit and Run when I was younger and it was a big thing. Then I thought it died off.” his father Kevin said. “(Kristy) got that letter and I said ‘Let’s do it.’” Sawyer’s quest for the national competition began with a local competition in Ackley. He advanced to the sectional in Manson, where he needed a tiebreaker to take first in his age group and be eligible for a spot in the Team Competition at Target Field in Minneapolis, where only the top three individuals in each age group from a several-state region were invited to participate. “The second one was when I got stoked,” Kevin said. “Then we get the e-mail saying your son had been invited to the team competition (several states).” It was at the team competition where Brayden shined. He threw all six of his pitches for strikes, while neither of his competitors had more than two, and lined two of his three hitting attempts down the middle after pulling his first. The third competition is a 160-foot run, one of the areas that Brayden said he’s best at. Though they were not told who won at the team competition, Kevin

The Grundy Register said he had a pretty good idea Brayden had done well. “We could kind of tell who was doing what,” he said. After that it was time to wait. Even if he had won the Twins competition there was no guarantee he would advance to the finals, as each Major League team held a competition and only the top three scores would advance. Last Sunday the finalists were announced on the MLB Network. Brayden was one of just two from the upper Midwest. While at the team competition, Brayden and the other participants had a chance to meet Twins first-baseman Chris Parmelee, one of

BRAYDEN SA WYER two previous Pitch, Hit and Run finalists to have made the Majors. Kevin said Brayden has dreams of playing in the Major Leagues someday as well. He said his son spends hours each day pitching and has shown dedication to improving. He began playing T-Ball in Grundy Center when he was four years old and still participates on the local YMCA teams. Next year Kevin said he might look into a traveling team for Brayden to play on. “He wants to play Major League Baseball and as a father I’m going to put forth the effort to allow him to do that,” Kevin said.

Though Brayden will play in the competition finals Monday, activities will span three days. He and his dad will be the guests of Major League Baseball throughout the AllStar festivities. As a finalist, he’ll be on the field during the Home Run Derby shagging fly balls in the outfield. More activities are planned for the day of the game, and Brayden and his dad have tickets to the game Tuesday. Brayden’s sister Jadyn competed alongside her brother at the Pitch, Hit and Run competition but did not advance to the team event.

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register WATERLOO - As the Waterloo Community Playhouse prepares for its long-awaited performance of “Les Miserables” beginning Friday, a number of cast members with local backgrounds shared their thoughts on the upcoming performance. No fewer than five local actors and actresses are part of the cast, including three from Grundy Center. Longtime Secondary Instructional Media Center Director Don Osterhaus and his son Adam are in the cast, as are GCHS English Teacher Amalie Guldenpfennig, AGWSR High School Spanish Teacher Kim Sittig and New Hartford’s Alta Schwab. All said they got involved with the project because they enjoy the theater, with several wanting to be part of long-time director Charles Stillwell’s final show. “I’ve done many shows with Chuck and this is my favorite musical,” Adam Osterhaus said. “This is his last one and I haven’t done one since “Joseph and the Amaz-
