Bair Makes History with Consecutive IHSRA Queen Crowns

By Robin Handy, News-Review Editor Emma Bair, a sophomore at Tri-Count High School and resident of Keswick, raised the bar with back to back crowns. For the first time in the history of the Iowa High School Rodeo Association (IHSRA) Queen pageant, Bair was crowned Queen two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014. Six judges with expertise in a variety of backgrounds from equine to livestock tally points on each contestant through a series of six events with additional points awarded for personality and appearance. Bair scored the highest overall points in the combined events: written test on the NHSRA rulebook, a 15-minute interview with the judges, modeling, a two-minute speech, an impromptu question and a horsemanship pattern. “Emma is a wonderful representation of everything the crown stands for. Everyone from the state of Iowa is extremely proud of her and is excited for her upcoming year,” said Katie Stien, IHSRA Queen Coordinator.

Barnyard Billy is another Sigourney Independence Day tradition - kids lined up across the courtyard for balloon animals and several folks just enjoyed watching the fascination on the children’s faces as the animals came to live.

Is Help On Horizon for Lewis Memorial Fountain?

As the Iowa High School Rodeo Association Queen, Emma represents not only the IHSRA, but also the sport of rodeo and the state of Iowa for an entire year. It is a huge responsibility. As a queen, she attends functions throughout the US including numerous PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) rodeos, regional and state rodeos, local functions, visits schools, the Iowa FFA Leadership Conference, Iowa Horse Fair and the list goes on. “Not only does Emma have responsibilities throughout the year, but she also has to compete in a pageant all over again when she represents our state at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyo., July 13-19. She competes against other girls across the world for the National High School Rodeo Queen crown,” said Stien. For more information on the NHSRA, visit the NHSRA.org website and watch live broadcasts of each NHSFR (National High School Finals Rodeo) event on RFD-TV or HHSRATV.com.

Record number of parade entries for 2014 with 159, according to Dan Appleget, parade organizer. The Sigourney Fire & Rescue officers carried the colors and pulled the antique firehose spindle with several members walking the parade route. The department was very stunning in their dress uniforms. The fireworks show later that night was amazing; the community really does well supporting the annual fireworks display.

Summer 2010

By Robin Handy, NR Editor Families and friends were sad to not see the beautiful Lewis Memorial Fountain in operation this past holiday weekend. City officials and concerned volunteers have pulled together to obtain pricing as well as create a time-line in hopes of returning the Fountain to her glory days. Volunteers met with John Bloom from Des Moines last Tuesday, July 1. He is an architect with Slingshot Architecture and associated with the State Historic Society. He works in an advisory position on historic preservation projects. Once Bloom returns with more details, volunteers will meet regularly and share their findings on the City of Sigourney’s website and in the News-Review.

The annual Poker Run combines challenging riddles with a beloved card game for an evening of motorized fun; it’s all sponsored by the SK Cobras Cheerleaders.

The annual Pedal Pull is very competitive, but everyone has great fun!
