Three Selected as Music Ambassadors Iowa Ambassadors of Music European Tour, 2014 Submitted Local high school musicians, sophomore, Mateer Strong; freshman, Abby Danowsky and sophomore, Josie Tremmel, all from Sigourney High School are touring Europe with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music (IAM) July 3-18. These local students are part of a select group of 378 student musicians, advisors and parents from across Iowa. The 2014 tour is a 20 day event including four days of rehearsal in Ginnell, with a 16 day tour covering England, France Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy and Liechtenstein. The students are performing in each country except Liechtenstein. Iowa Ambassadors of Music tours Europe on alternate years. To be considered for membership in IAM, students must be recommended by their school music teachers as having superior music skills and possessing high character. After this initial recommendation, the students are contacted about the opportunity to participate in the tour. This year the students perform in either the 200 member band

or 150 member choir on the tour. Strong plays clarinet, Tremmel plays saxophone and Danowsky is performing with the choir. Jessica Meier, Sigourney Band Director and Randy Stichter, choir director, nominated these students. Being a member of the Iowa Ambassador of Music tour means that through performance, the participants participate in a sharing of cultures. Most tourists’ visit and take from their experiences, the Iowa Ambassador of Music also gives. One of the highlights from past tours has been when the students realize the USA’s national march, the “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, is a well-known and popular march in Europe. The choir’s opportunity to perform its selections in settings with over a thousand year heritage gives the students a chance to add a new page in the cultural venue of Europe. Dr. Morgan Jones, Professor Emeritus from the University of Iowa conducts the Iowa Ambassadors of Music Band, and Peter Westphalen, of Cedar Rapids Washington High School, conducts the choir. Forty Iowa music teachers/musicians are going to assist in the musical preparation of the ensembles. The music teachers instruct the students and serve as advisors on the tour. The 2014 European tour is IAM’s fourteenth trip. Since the group was established in 1988,over 5,000 students musicians have delighted European audiences with their performances as Iowa Ambassadors of Music.

Local Projects Benefit from Grant Awards Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is reminding Iowans about the deadlines to request an absentee ballot by mail and to register to vote using normal procedures for the June 3 primary election. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 30. Eligible Iowans may use election day registration procedures after the registration deadline to register to vote and cast an absentee ballot in-person at the local county auditor’s office until Monday, June 2 or vote at the polls on Election Day, Tuesday June 3. “I encourage all eligible Iowans to take full advantage of their right to vote and many Iowans are choosing to cast an absentee ballot by mail. Iowans can track their absentee ballot to make sure it arrives at the county auditor’s office through the Iowa Secretary of State’s website,” Schultz said. “Every vote counts and it’s important that Iowans participate to make sure their voices are heard.” Iowans can track their absentee ballot through the Iowa Secretary of State website. The information includes the date the absentee ballot request was processed by the county auditor, the date the ballot was sent to the voter by the county auditor, and the date the voted ballot was received back by the county auditor. Shelter posts and the floor are being constructed in preparation for a big community work weekend June 6-8 with the 1-95th Army Reserve Unit out of Iowa City. Phase I, which includes the shelter and all the concrete work and landscaping, will be completed that weekend. Phase II, which includes the playground and veterans memorial, will be completed at a later date as fundraising allows. Since its inception, the WCRF has awarded over $6 million to worthy projects. Wednesday night the casino granted 54 projects totaling just under $1 million.
