North Iowa Class of 2014 graduates Sunday Commencement at North Iowa High School is set for this coming Sunday, May 18, when 41 members of the Class of 2014 are set to receive their diplomas. Five young ladies from the Class of 2014 are shown above on Thursday, August 19, 2010 as they attended their very first day of high school. Representing the various communities of the North Iowa School District are, from left: Rachel Boekelman, daughter of Myron and Judy Boekelman of Lakota; Paige Hassebroek, daughter of Travis and Patty Hassebroek of Buffalo Center; Krista Hovland, daughter of Bruce and Vivian Hovland of Thompson; Jenna Koppen, daughter of Derek and Jane Koppen of Lakota; and Carly Main, daughter of Ron and Amy Main of rural Buffalo Center. In the below photo, this same group of ladies is pictured four years later dressed in their graduation caps and gowns in preparation for the Commencement ceremony, which begins at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday in the high school gymnasium. In the same order as the above photo are: Rachel Boekelman, Paige Hassebroek, Krista Hovland, Jenna Koppen and Carly Main.

Volunteers have been working for months to create more than 540 individualized luminaria for the 2014 Winnebago County Relay for Life. Front from left are: Jodene Bartleson and Lana Thompson. Back row: Jill Holland, Shirleen Mitthun, Cindy Wooge and Lonnie Arnevik. Not pictured are: Judy Anderson, Erika Knoner, Sandy Sims and Laureen Wubben.

Luminaria ceremony is highlight of Relay for Life The Winnebago County Relay for Life event will be held Saturday, June 14 from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. at the Courthouse Square in Forest City. It is a fun-filled day with entertainment all day, booths full of food and merchandise, hosted by Relay teams. People from Winnebago County and surroundings communities come together to remember loved ones who are suffering with cancer or have lost the fight, as well as to honor cancer survivors. “One of the most moving experiences of the Relay event is the Luminaria Ceremony. When 400 individualized

bags are lined up around the courthouse square and lit at night, it is a sight to see!” said Lana Thompson, chairman of the luminaria committee. The decorated and illuminated bags represent and honor loved ones who are cancer survivors or those who are currently battling cancer, in addition to memorializing loved ones who have lost the fight. All proceeds from the luminarias go to help local families through the American Cancer Society. Each bag is different; decorated and hand-lettered by the small band of women who have

been meeting weekly for many months to create them. Calligraphy sets the names off, and several women help with this. Jill Holland has been loyal to help out lettering every year, even though she helps out with several other Relay teams. “Every one of us has had a personal connection with cancer, either personally or a family member or friend. That is why we all volunteer and believe in this particular aspect of the Relay so much,” said Cindy Wooge. Luminaria volunteers from Forest City include: Lana Thompson, Jodene Bartleson, Jill Holland, Judy Anderson, Cindy Wooge, Erika Knoner, Sandy Sims and Shirleen Mitthun. Other volunteers are Laureen Wubben from Lake Mills and Lonnie Arnevik from Thompson. Luminaria samples and order forms can be found at many grocery stores in the county, including Johnson’s Food Center in Buffalo Center and Hometown Market in Thompson. The luminarias sell for a minimum donation of $10.00. People may mail in an order form or order from a committee member, local Relay team members or drop forms off at the courtesy counter at Bill’s Family Food in Forest City. Luminaria will also be offered for sale in the entrance of Bill’s Family Foods on Fridays, May 16, May 30 and June 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, May 24, May 31 and June 7, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The deadline for special art requests is June 1. Specialty bags include handdrawn artwork that features professions, hobbies or interests like farm scenes or bowling pins. “We’ve tried to think of everything and have many oneof-a-kind bags already made up, as we know what was requested in previous years,” said Lonnie Arnevik. There are also glittered floral or butterfly designs available. The decorated luminaria will also be available for purchase at the Relay on June 14th at the gazebo in the courthouse square. More volunteers are needed, including men, women and teens, to help the luminaria volunteers set out the bags and sell during the day. There is also clean up detail at the end of the fireworks. Anyone interested may call Lana Thompson at 641-860-1789 to help for a shift during the Relay.
