Coach Hamilton gets his team prepared Although the first track meet was not until April, Bulldog runners and field event participants had already put in over a month of training. Track practice for Coach Rick Hamilton’s boys began the first of March. Their daily after-school routine: Start off with flexibility exercises, then focus on the field events until around 4:15 p.m. The coaches then concentrate on the runners and hurdlers. The weight room is open until 5:45 for athletes who wish to continue with strength and conditioning. Each coach has his/her criteria for lettering in a sport. “We have two letters,” says Hamilton, now in his 23rd year as a track coach. “One letter for those who compete in track meets and a letter for those who just come to practice and work hard. We have athletes who want the training for other sports but don’t want to compete.”

With solid numbers, Hamilton says they can just about fill all events. “Nathan McCutcheon is the only one brave enough to take on the high hurdles at this time, but being a freshman, and considering the height of the hurdles, he will struggle this year.” Other than that event, the coach is expecting to be competitive. Tackling the 400 meter hurdles are Zane Satre and Derek Reutter. Hamilton feels that once the weather gets better, he should be able to get them in the right condition for placing at meets. Assistant Coach Ryan Kobliska works with the competitive group of middle distance and distance runners. He brings to the table his experience as cross country coach. As far as field events go, Treston Hagen will be leading the shot putters and Aaron Nigro the

O

discus throwers. “I think our strengths will be in our experienced numbers,” comments Hamilton. “We have a lot of boys returning with good experience. Add to that the fact that they worked hard in the weight room this past year, and they should be much improved.” 2014 Track competitors Seniors Zane Satre...............400 hurdles Jon Thompson......sprinter, shot putter

Young girls team gradually improving Dena Boyd is in her first year as head girls track coach. The past two years she coached the junior high girls, and prior to that, helped with the track team at Pella High School where she was a student teacher. In order to get an early start on practice (starting the end of February), Boyd had her team getting in shape through circuit training and laps through the high school halls. Throwers and jumpers worked on developing footwork routines. Once they were ready to move outside they began focusing on maintaining speed through longer distance. And most recently they have been working on handoffs, hurdles, jumping and full throws (discus and shot). Boyd gives a breakdown of each group (grades are in parenthesis). Throwers

Kara Kieffer (12), Olivia Johnson (12), Maddie Moses (11), Josie Consier (10), Charlie Klauenberg (9) and Kylie Nichols (9) We have experienced seniors leading the underclassmen who are showing a lot of potential. These girls have been lifting weights and getting stronger, as well as working on footwork everyday. Olivia comes back with the most varsity experience and is looking to place in multiple meets this year. Jumpers Ellee Laws (9), Lillie Longhorn (9), Sydney Diggs (9) Ellee and Lillie are high jumping and will see vast improvements as the year goes on. As freshmen, they are focusing a lot on their form. Sydney will long jump this year, once she returns from a hip injury. She

has been developing as an athlete immensely since the fall, lifting weights, running with the boys and improving her jump. Hurdlers

Laws, Longhorn, Kami Wheelock (9), Gabrielle Weber (10), Maryssa Soder (9) and Diggs For most meets we will be able to have a shuttle hurdle team for the first time in a while. Each of these girls are working on their steps and attacking each hurdle. Some are recovering from injury so our team will benefit with their return. Sydney is excited to try the 400 meter hurdles and we feel she can excel in that event. Distance

ing up with the boys. She will either help us in the 3000 meter or 1500 meter as well as appear in some 800s and relays. She is looking to give the team points, especially in her newest event, the 3000. Sprinters

Kate Christensen (11), Jenna Sheirbon (11), Liz Good (11), Jackie Lawler (11), Melicia Maestre (10), Paige Sohm (10), Kimmy Christensen (9), Kacie Hoskins (9), Vanessa Vote (9). These girls, plus some hurdlers, too, are going to be putting together some nice relays. Kate, Jackie, Melicia, Paige and Kimmy will do some of the middle distance races as well. We have some girls who can score for us in everything from a 200 meter dash to 800 meter run. The juniors are setting a nice example

of what hard work looks like, while being pushed by underclassmen.

“Right now our strength is sprinting, simply because of the number of girls,” says the Bulldog coach. “The juniors are familiar with relays and hand-offs, so we’ll look to them for some points as meets go on.” According to Boyd they have some great newcomers who will be fighting for varsity spots. Some freshmen, she feels, have worked themselves into a comfortable spot in some varsity relays or in their individual event.

628 Story St. 628 Story St. Boone, IA 50036

Blair Williams (10) Blair has been getting in shape all winter and will be our lone distance runner. Because of this, she has been training, and keep-

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with these girls and see them develop not only as track runners, but also into better athletes,” says Boyd. “Our focus is positive habits this year and we are working to make excellence a habit.”

Home track meets With the installation of a poly rubber surface track in 2007, Ogden is now able to host track meets. Home meets this year include the Ogden Relays (girls) April 17 and the Ogden Coed Meet May 5. OHS has also played host to larger conference and district competitions.

A look at this year’s golfers Returning five letter winners from a girls team that finished 28-5 last year Ogden golf coach Randy Johnson could see this group having another strong year and contending for a conference title. Senior Emily Rinehart started the year with a couple medals and will probably add to her hardware collection before the season concludes. Other returning letter winners include senior Delaney Tonsfeldt and juniors Sveta Hansen, Bailey Porter and Kylie Westberg. Christina Vinchattle, the lone sophomore on the squad, is joined by newcomers Hannah Carter and Anna Clark. As for the boys team, Johnson says they have a bunch of varsity spots to fill. After finishing 16-17, Ogden would be depending on big contributions from the newcomers. Only two letter winners return: Senior Brandt Roederer and sophomore Hunter Longnecker. The squad is made up of one senior; three juniors, Allen Waterbury, Garrett McDowell and Dakotah Kreutzer; six sophs, Longnecker, Zach Waterbury, Logan Sturtz, Connor Paulson, Jeff Olson and Harrison Haglund; and one freshman, Thomas Behle. How does Ogden stack up in the conference? The coach anticipates his Bulldogs to finish in about the middle of the pack. Johnson is in his ninth year as head coach at Ogden High School. A former golf student, Miriam Rinehart, returned this year as an assistant coach.
