Board Sneaks Friend Nomination ‘Right Under Their Noses’ This year’s Keokuk County Fair Friend of the Fair grew up about two blocks from the fairgrounds. He spent lots of time at the fairgrounds. When they started the funnel cake booth at the flea market, Gene and Juanita Roland volunteered many flea market Sunday’s making funnel cakes. For many years, Gene and Juanita have done ‘Pick the Winner’ at the Harness Horse Races in What Cheer and Oskaloosa. In 1997, Gene was elected to the Keokuk County Fair Board. He has served on the fair board for 17 years. Juanita was elected soon after. She is currently serving as a co-secretary of the fair. In 2000 Gene became coordinator of the Floral Hall exhibit building during the fair, a position he still holds. Juanita is Superintendent of the Photography Department in Floral Hall. In

2001, Gene and Juanita started assisting Jim Dalziel with the flea market concessions. Since 2002, they have managed the flea market concessions and since 2005, the Figure 8 and Bingo concessions. As Gene and Juanita became more and more involved in the Keokuk County Fair and were, consequently, driving 1½ hours from Waterloo frequently, they made the decision to buy a house in What Cheer. So, unlike, the thousands of “snowbirds” that travel south in the winter, Gene and Juanita travel south to their second home each summer to spend “hours and hours” volunteering at the Keokuk County Fairgrounds. Congratulations to the 2013 Keokuk County Fairs Friend of the Fair: Gene and Juanita Roland.
