A night on the town
Downtown was bustling last Tuesday night in Buffalo Center during the annual Ladies Night Out, hosted by North Iowa Betterment. Attendance was noticeably up from last year, as 125 ladies picked up punch cards at NIB for the night’s drawing, and many other ladies were also out shopping the local businesses. Business participation was also up, with 18 businesses and vendors taking part, compared to eight last year. Participants included: BC Babies, BC Quasquicentennial Committee, Bison Graphics/ AJ Embroidery, Creative Quilting, Emporium Furniture & Gallery, Fringe Salon, Heartwarmer’s Quilt Guild, Johnson’s Food Center, Murra Hardware, North Iowa Physical Therapy, Shelton’s Liquor, Simply U Salon, Rusty Rose and Weaver’s Leather Store, along with vendors for Origami Owl, Scentsy, Thirty-One and Tupperware.
Cathy Kelly was the grand prize winner of NIB’s Ladies Night Out drawing on Tuesday, Nov. 12. She took home a prize basket consisting of items donated by the participating businesses and vendors. Other prize winners included Pam Hartman, who won a bottle of Stella Rosa Black, donated by Shelton’s Liquor; Olivia Doden, who won a hair purification treatment from Simply U Salon; and Vonnie Pilgrim-Bosma, who won a Paraffin Wax treatment from Fringe Salon.

Beginning Saturday, Nov. 30, an elf will travel from business to business, where he will hide amongst the merchandise and dĂŠcor – waiting to be found by a sharp-eyed customer. The person who finds him should bring him to the register, and he or she will be entered for a chance to win a Kindle Fire HD. Once the elf is found, he will travel to a new business. The same person can find him multiple times for multiple entries. The promotion runs through Friday, Dec. 13, and the drawing for the winner will be held

FFA’s Farmer Appreciation Meal The Bison FFA Chapter will host its annual Farmer Appreciation Meal on Friday, Nov. 22 at North Iowa Community School. The meal will be held in the old cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring a menu of burgers, potato salad, chips, baked beans, bars and drinks.
The 15th annual Giving Tree project is underway in the local communities, as ornaments went on display Monday in Buffalo Center, Lakota, Rake and Thompson. Each year, students at North Iowa Community School decorate the ornaments, which contain information about a gift for an anonymous child in need. Community members are asked to pick up an ornament, purchase the gift indicated, and return the gift and ornament to the same location by Friday, Dec. 13. Ornaments are on display at the Buffalo Center Post Office, Farmers Trust and Savings Bank in Buffalo Center and Lakota, Titonka Savings Bank in Thompson and State Savings Bank in Rake. Giving Tree is helping approximately 30 families this holiday season, and two gifts of clothing and one toy have been requested for each child.
Community Thanksgiving service next Wednesday
Local area churches will gather together once again this season for a Community Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service next Wednesday, Nov. 27. The service will be held at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center this year, beginning at 7 p.m. Pastors and congregants from each of the churches participating will facilitate the service,
with Pastor Mark Brickzin providing the message from God’s Word. A special offering will be received during the service to support the mission and ministries of the North Iowa Ministerial Association, which continues to serve the families of Buffalo Center, Rake, Lakota and Thompson. A l l community members are invited and encouraged to attend this special time of worship.
Thompson council to appoint new mayor The Thompson City Council will appoint a new mayor before January 2, following the death of Mayor Bob Johnson on November 3. The Council deliberated on the matter at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and decided to appoint a new mayor rather than hold a special election. Mayor Johnson was posthumously reelected as mayor on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5. According to City Clerk Diane Adams, Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Hughes will serve out the remainder of the current mayor’s term, which runs through the end of the year. She expects the Council will make its decision at the December meeting, at which time it will set the date of appointment for the new mayor. Following the announcement, cit-
izens will have the option to petition for a special election to be held. The appointment of the new mayor will be for a one-year term, with the mayor’s seat up for election again in November of 2014. Any Thompson residents interested in the position may contact City Hall at 584-2785.
