Jack Bailey (1907-1980), host of the TV show “Queen for a Day.” Others from Franklin County who have gained national and worldwide notoriety because of their accomplishments, the first being a dentist from Latimer, Iowa by the name of Dr. Milton S. Wirtz (1905-1993) who invented the acrylic eye. Because of the many soldiers who lost eyes during World War II, he felt a need for an eye replacement. For regular visitors, a $40 season pass is available. The range features reflective steel targets, offering visual and auditory feedback. Paper targets may be brought. The pistol range features swinging

creek to create the west arm of the lake. In 1864 he sold the 40-acre lake to William Beed, who put in the long causeway. In 1904 the flour mill discontinued operation. At first, support for a park financed by local businesses was a popular idea, but the plans never materialized. As a result, the lake was drained and the land returned to farming. BUT THAT wasn’t the end. In the early 1930s, the Iowa State Fish and Game Commission approved a plan for a state park at the site — if the community would provide the land. The proposed rejuvenation of old Beeds Lake that was put to a vote stipulated that Franklin County would issue $50,000 in bonds for the purpose of acquiring the land and erecting a dam.

The proposal was defeated by a small margin because it was estimated the cost to taxpayers would amount to $100,000. Another attempt to develop the area came in 1934 when an Izaak Walton League committee began to make plans for the construction of

Beeds Lake the lake and development of the surrounding area. Although land prices were depressed during this era, lake owners sold their land for the project. Lots on the north shore sold for $125 each.

The dam was 55 feet wide at the base and 13 feet wide at the top. Laborers also forged a truck trail and three miles of foot trails into the public areas of the park. Fifty-five acres of native trees were planted including 10,000 donated by a Hampton nursery. Improvements were made to the 120-acre lake bed, sloping the banks and rip-rapping where necessary. Fish shelters were constructed and the old mill pond was rebuilt to create a filtering house and a fish-rearing pond. When severe bank erosion occurred in 1960, 1,000 tons of rip-rapping was completed in February 1961. The rocks were dumped on the ice along the bank and settled into place when the ice melted in the spring. In 1997, the nonprofit Friends of Beeds Lake group spoke of draining the lake again but was told it would have to come up with the funds. After the draft of a 2010 watershed management plan, funding was obtained in Fall 2010 for a study to demonstrate the need of dredging (clearing the sediment from) the west end of the lake. As presented in February, 2012, dry dredging the deepest-sedimented part of lake is the most cost-efficient option. Meanwhile, lake supporters are petitioning the Department of Natural Resources to get the lake to the 35-priority list for Iowa water body dredging. Signs marking the watershed’s north and south boundaries were placed in 2012. Maintenance work continues at the park. Volunteers repaired an eroded and unsafe trail in summer 2012.

Better for Business

L

ocating your business in Franklin County is simply better for business because of what we bring to the table. Workforce is one example. Our labor force is business-friendly, skilled and eager to get to work. Location is another advantage. We are under a day’s drive to major markets in the Midwest such as Minneapolis and Chicago. Assets in Franklin County such as buildings and developed industrial land are much more affordable than other parts of the state. Our incentive packages and professional project support have often tipped the scales in our favor and the overall cost of doing business is certainly a reason Iowa is better for business. CNBC has again ranked Iowa as having the lowest cost of doing business in the nation. Ease of getting around is another reason business can do better here. Commutes are often under 15 minutes, along a well-maintained grid of farm to market roadways. Being on

Interstate-35 and Highways 65 and 3 so your product travels smoothly doesn’t hurt, either. A Franklin County location can be better for your business because you would be in a community of professionals bent on success. Interestingly enough many started as Franklin County entrepreneurs. Sukup Manufacturing’s world headquarters are located in Sheffield. The multistate Kum N Go Convenience Store chain got its start here and we are also proud to be home to ABCM Corporation of Hampton, an industry leader in providing the highest quality care to the elderly. We invite you to consider a location in one of the fine communities of Franklin County, a place better for your business… better for your life.

Better for your Life

“I

ronically, rural America has become viewed by a growing number of Americans as having a higher quality of life, not because of what it has, but rather because of what it does not have! Don A. Dillman So true, Mr. Dillman. We don’t have high crime rates, exorbitant housing costs and overcrowding found elsewhere. In Franklin County, you can spread your wings, play in safe neighborhoods and get to know your neighbors. Education matters here. Little ones get a great start at a number of preschools in the county. K-12 students receive a quality education in any of four public school districts and with a student to teacher ratio of 11:1, your student will get the individual attention he or she deserves. If a parochial environment is more to your liking, the St. Paul Lutheran School in Latimer provides a nurturing school experience for K-8th graders. Go Bulldogs! Go Warhawks! Go Cadets! Go Cougars! Higher education is within easy reach with community colleges in neighboring Mason City and Iowa Falls and 4-year

universities are about an hours drive away. Extracurricular activities abound in all schools, providing a well-rounded experience for students. No compromise on healthcare. The Franklin General Hospital in Hampton covers the full continuum of primary healthcare and is affiliated with the awardwinning Mercy Health Network of North Iowa. Healthcare is convenient with family practice medical clinics located in Latimer, Hampton, Sheffield and Ackley where the practitioners will know you by name. Our communities also have trained responders for those unexpected emergencies and response times are nothing compared to what you might experience in a city. Affordable housing. Yes, really. In tree-lined neighborhoods? Absolutely! The average price for a home in Franklin County is around $65,000. A $65,000 home in Franklin County would cost you $85,000 in Nebraska or Minnesota. Iowa’s statewide average home price is $117,900, far less than the average home price in Minnesota, which exceeds $213,000. Put your feet up. It’s laid back. It’s easy. It’s Franklin County‌ better for your life.

In addition to the numerous hits he kept for himself, Joe’s songs have been recorded by Holly Dunn, Tim McGraw, Tracy Lawrence, Conway Twitty, Doug Stone, and most recently Jo Dee Messina, who’s recording of “My Give a Damn’s Busted” became a big hit. Diffie has won a Grammy, CMA Awards, and been honored as Humanitarian of the Year by the Country Music Broadcasters. He’s a member of the Grand Ole Opry, recorded with George Jones, and toured the country numerous times.

NIEMAN The Thursday night grandstand show will feature country music star Jerrod Nieman and the duo Love and Theft. Niemann has recorded two independent albums. In 2006, he charted with the single “I Love Women (My Momma Can’t Stand).” He has also co-written three singles for Garth Brooks: the Chris LeDoux tribute “Good Ride Cowboy,” as well as “That Girl Is a Cowboy” and “Midnight Sun.” Jamey Johnson, Neal McCoy, Julie Roberts, Flynnville Train and Zona Jones have also rec-orded Niemann’s songs. “Lover, Lover” was released in early 2010 and became Niemann’s first Top 40 single. In August it be-came his first number-one country hit. MONEY A rock and roll icon, who is currently starring in a television commercial, brings back music from the ‘70s and

‘80s on Friday night. Eddie Money (born Edward Joseph Mahoney in Brooklyn, N.Y.), a rock guitarist, is an accomplished musician who sings, writes, and plays the saxophone, harmonica and piano. His father, grandfather and brother were all New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers, and Eddie was an NYPD trainee and a police officer for two years. As his interest in music intensified, he eventually ended his law-enforcement career in favor of becoming a full-time musician. The early days of MTV and mu-sic videos launched Eddie Money into stardom with a string of Top 40 hits and platinum albums. With hits like “Two Tickets To Paradise,” “Baby Hold On,” “Walk on Water,” “Think I’m in Love” and “Shakin’,” Eddie continues to be one of the hardest-working men in rock and roll. Money appears in a 2012 Geico insurance commercial, in which he owns a travel agency where he sings “Two Tickets to Paradise” to a family who wants tickets for a vacation.

The album’s third single, “One More Drinkin’ Song,” reached number 13 in December, 2011. Niemann released his fourth Arista single, “Shinin’ on Me,” from his second Arista album, Free the Music, released in October, 2012. The album’s second single, “Only God Could Love You More,” was also released to country radio in October, 2012. LOVE AND THEFT Rounding out Thursday night’s entertainment is Love and Theft, a duo composed of Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson; both, vocalists and guitarists. Love and Theft made their chart debut in early 2009 with the single “Runaway,” which reached the Top

10 on Billboard Hot Country Songs. The band’s debut album, World Wide Open, was released in August, 2009. “Dancing in Circles” was released as the album’s second single in December 2009, and reached a peak of number 25. In 2011, Love and Theft moved to RCA Records Nashville and released the single “Angel Eyes”, which hit number one in August 2012; it is included on a self-titled album. Stephen and Eric didn’t meet un-til their early 20s. Stephen’s father is a pastor and Eric’s father is a worship pastor. Their respective fathers fed them a steady diet of gospel, oldies and country. “Our parents didn’t want us listening to secular music that much. But they’d let us listen to Elvis, Roy, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was cool to grow up that way, and that’s still my favorite kind of music,” explained Eric, who said he and Stephen work hard to capture a more organic, country sound. “We’re both from the South and we’re very much in favor of embracing our country roots.”

Franklin County Fair RODEO Rounding out the grandstand lineup will be the Barnes PRCA Rodeo on Wednesday and a Figure 8 and Cruiser Car Race Sunday. Fairgoers can attend all five nights and seven shows in the grandstand with a pay one price (POP) pass. Passes are $35 through July 8, and then $45, July 9, through the fair. Children age 5 and under are admitted free. Tickets will be on sale May 1. POP pass gift certificates are avail-able now at the fair office, 641-456-2049.

he Franklin County Historical Society plans activities and events to celebrate the 75th anniversary of completion of the Reeve Rural Electric Administration (REA) Power Plant. The historical society owns the power plant building, located south of Hampton, and operates the REA Power Plant Museum, located in the building. The Reeve plant was built by Federated Power Cooperative Association, which had directors and officers from rural electric cooperatives (RECs) serving North Central Iowa counties: Butler, Franklin, Grundy, Hancock, Hardin, and Wright. Federated’s successor is Corn Belt Power Cooperative. During late March 1938 the Reeve plant was completed after six months construction and went on-line to deliver electricity to farms in North Central Iowa. Many area families were members of these RECs and may have had a role in the plant’s construction and operation from the late 1930s into the 1950s.

The recently added military display room includes photos, uniforms, weapons and other artifacts from the Civil War through the Vietnam War as well as a small display featuring Admiral William Leahy, who was born in Hampton in 1875 and became an important military leader. The museum was opened in 1981 and was quickly filled with historic memorabilia. An addition was completed in 1994. The museum includes a large exhibit hall with several displays, a library full of priceless archives, a machinery hall that dates back to the settler days, a special room to display Franklin County 4-H/ FFA trophies, pictures, uniforms and other memorabilia that has been donated to the museum over the years, and an impressive collection of artifacts, ranging from an 80-year-old corn thresher and Indian arrowhead to a 19th century wedding dress and an early voting machine. The museum spans all eras of the county’s history. You can take a look at the prehistoric mastodon bones found in a gravel pit near Geneva or

FRANKLIN COUNTY COURTHOUSE, HAMPTON: The most photographed and visible structure in Franklin County is the Franklin County Courthouse, located in downtown Hampton. Built in 1890 and 1891, it is “a building of harmonious proportions, pleasing architectural lines and substantial construction.” It cost an astounding $60,000 to construct. National Register of Historic Places, was restored in 1970. The courthouse is open for business from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you want a tour, call 641-456-5622 to schedule a time. Memorial Hall Hampton

MEMORIAL HALL, Hampton: It is the only “Soldiers Memorial Hall” in Iowa and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1890 after the Iowa General Assembly authorized counties to establish a tax to build such monuments to honor those Civil War veterans from the county who were deceased. The building’s unique architecture makes it attractive to visitors. The soldier standing sentinel over the building was refurbished in 1992. And the marble tablets inside the building, bearing the names of the veterans, are truly one-of-a-kind. Today, the hall is used for meetings of the local American Legion Post and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Visitors may see Memorial Hall by appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 641-456-5670 or 641-456-5620 between 8 and 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. OLD STONE HOUSE, rural Geneva: The first permanent structure in Franklin County, built in 1854, it is still standing today. A prairie palace in its day, the house consists of seven rooms, including two bedrooms on 56

the second floor, a full basement and a pantry off the kitchen. The structure was built with limestone from the banks of nearby Maynes Creek. The house was inhabited until 1956. In 1979, the property was deeded to the Franklin County Historical Society, which converted the home into a pioneer museum, opening in June 1985. The exterior was repaired in 2009. The interior is under construction. Plans are to make it a living museum with quilting classes, spelling bees and tours for children. In 2013, a loom was moved into the house from the Franklin County Historical Museum. Stop by the Stone House Sept. 20 and 21 for historical demonstrations, an antique show and flea market. For more information, visit oldstonehouse.org. Appointments for private tours can be made by calling Keri Rojas at 319-491-6260. MAYSVILLE SCHOOLHOUSE, rural Hampton: The town of Maysville was settled in 1856. It grew to 150 people and featured a post office, hotel, two blacksmith shops, two stores, a steam saw mill and a school. Maysville citizens dreamed of making their town the county seat, but the railroad went through Hampton instead. By 1890, the little town had died. All that remains today is the twostory limestone schoolhouse built in 1867. Situated on a crest of a hill and visible from U.S. Highway 65 about 5 miles south of Hampton on 95th Street, the school has survived a full century after the town’s death. It has been used as a community center, a site for scouting programs and campouts, and until recently served as the official voting place for Reeve Township. The school is not open on a regular basis, but may be toured by contacting Franklin County Historical Museum at 641-456-5777. REA POWER PLANT MUSEUM, rural Hampton: Located 4 miles south of the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hampton and 1 1/2 miles west on gravel roads, the Corn Belt Power REA plant was the first farmer-owned power plant in the nation to receive an REA grant and only the second in the nation to go “on line” in the 1930s. The plant was given to the Franklin County Historical Society and has been turned into a rural and electrical

Historical Sites museum. In 2013, the museum marks the 75th anniversary of the plant going on line. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information or a tour, call Marvin O. Rodemeyer at 641-456-3477 or Franklin County Historical Museum at 641-456-5777. DOWS DOWS DEPOT/IOWA WELCOME CENTER, BLACKSMITH SHOP & MERCANTILE, Dows: More than 7,500 people visit the Dows Depot Welcome Center each year. The center is about two miles from the interstate. The historical society installed a sequence of Burma Shave-type signs along the way to let drivers know they were still on course after hearing from farmers that drivers were stopping, looking puzzled and turning around. The historical society runs the depot, blacksmith shop, mercantile, Evans prairie house and country school with largely volunteer labor. The Dows Depot Welcome Center includes railroad memorabilia and other historical items from the town. A man named Stephen Dows brought the railroad from Holland through the town of Otisville to Clarion in 1880. Otisville was renamed in Dows’ honor. By 1885, a few more lines connected to Dows. The depot was built in 1896 and operated until 1980. In 1987, the Dows Historical Society bought the depot. More than 120 volunteers worked on restoring it for nine months, and the group received a state matching grant to help open the building as an official State of Iowa Welcome Center. The welcome center has information about Iowa attractions, restrooms, a telephone and a gift shop with wines, jams, crafts and antiques. The Dows Mercantile housed general stores, a hardware store, hairdressers, a veterinarian and apartments over the years. The historical society purchased it in 1987, like the depot, to prevent it from being demolished. It opened in 1989 and now features folk art, crafts and fine art from Iowa artists and manufacturers and an antique mall. The WWW.FRANKLINCOUNTYTOURISM.COM

The Blacksmith Shop was willed to the historical society in 1990. Until that time, Fred Quasdorf owned and operated it, according to museum staff. The Quasdorf Blacksmith and Wagon Museum, as it is fully called, is said to be one of the best-equipped blacksmith shops in the Midwest. The Evans family had 14 children and raised 12 of them in the 16 by 14 square foot, two room, two story house. As many as 10 Evans children, plus the parents, lived in the house at any one time. It has modest furnishings: a bed, a rocker made by Ingebret Evans and a stove. Displays describe the history of the house and the process of moving it off the homestead.
