Candidates for the mayor’s office were mailed a questionnaire at the beginning of the month regarding their background, campaign and platform. All three contenders returned the survey. Nick Wilson comprise this year’s ballot and hope to earn the seat being vacated by outgoing Mayor Jim Saylor, who isn’t seeking re-election The questions were listed as follows: 1. Provide information on your background—how long you’ve lived in the community, family, current job, etc.

2. Have you ever held elected office or been involved with any type of committee or board? 3. In your opinion, what are the main issues facing the community? 4. What attributes or skills do you bring to the mayor’s office? 5. Are there any projects you’d like to see completed or started by the city?

6. Why are you running? 7. Is there anything else you’d like to add? The Sheffield Press edited for spelling errors and grammatical mistakes only. The following is each mayoral candidate’s response to the questionnaire. Unanswered questions are denoted with the letters “N/A.

1. I have been a resident of Sheffield since the end of May 1993, and in my current residence since the fall of 1995. I have one son, Tony, and two grandchildren, Emma and Austin. I am currently employed at Jon’s Auto & Truck Repair in Sheffield. 2. I have not held an elected office. I have been involved in many local and county organizations such as Sheffield Community Club and Sheffield Betterment Foundation where I have served in several officer positions; Relay For Life of Franklin County where I have been the event chair for the past five years, Franklin County Tourism and Franklin County Charitable Foundation. 3. We need to make sure that we are working towards fixing our infrastructure so that we do not have preventable problems with flooding in the future. I feel strongly that there is lack of trust between the mayor, city council and our residents. This is something that can be restored and have cohesiveness among the mayor, the city council and the commuBOGUE to page 7

1. I am 53 years old and have lived in Sheffield for almost 20 years. Jeannie and I are the parents of five children and we also have three grandchildren. I work for Securitas Security Services at Armour-Eckrich in Mason City as the head of security. 2. When I lived in Mason City I served six years on the Mason City Park and Recreation board. I have also served two terms as mayor of Sheffield. 3. The main issue is city finances. Recently the city council hired an accounting firm to fix city finances. If elected I would discuss with the new council about restructuring the city clerk office. I would like to see an emphasis on the city clerk side and finance side. With a city clerk and a finance officer duties would be segregated creating specialization, efficiency and accountability. We have to become better stewards of taxpayers’ money. 4. Experience and hard work are the attributes and skills that I would bring to the mayor’s office. Having served two terms as mayor I know what to expect and KINGERY to page 7

The arrival of the replica of the USS Leahy was a long-time coming and was delayed a bit longer due to the government shutdown. (Photos by Jeff Forward, Hampton Chronicle)

Leahy replica ship arrives, is put into case at county museum By Jeff Forward The long-awaited delivery of a replica ship named after Hampton-native and pioneering military hero Admiral William D. Leahy arrived last week and was put into place at the Franklin County Historical Museum. The replica ship – 1/48th scale of the real USS Leahy – is the centerpiece of the Admiral William D. Leahy Exhibit in the Franklin County Historical Society Museum at the Franklin County Fairgrounds. The exhibit also includes several historical items such as Leahy’s desk from his days working in the White House, his Navy uniform and a Four-Star Commander flag. Steve Deike, who is involved in the Leahy Memorial Committee – the group constructing the exhibit – said it was awesome to finally have the replica ship on hand and in the museum. “It’s been a 22-month process, Deike said of the overall exhibit time frame. The replica ship – which had been housed in West Bethesda, Md. – finally arrived on Oct. 23 in Hampton after months-long delay. The exhibit committee, Deike said, had expected to possibly get possession of the ship in the summer prior to the Franklin County Fair. However, Navy and government red tape delayed the delivery until now. Last Wednesday, the replica ship arrived in a large semi-truck and was carefully unloaded by

a group of volunteers from the committee, including Deike, Joe Pitsor, and Mark Laipple. The trio was joined by Brian Potter, who works with the Curator of Navy Model Ships. Potter accompanied the replica

ship to Hampton and cleaned it meticulously with an air hose before it was finally placed into its glass case. The replica ship will remain in Hampton indefiniteLEAHY to page 7
