G-H board considers high school remodel By Rebecca Peter The Garner-Hayfield Board of Education took an in-depth look at plans for a major renovation and expansion of the high school. The board met in regular session Sept. 17. The school board has been discussing the need for additional classroom space, remodeling the front entrance, enlarging the kitchen, more vocational program space and various other upgrades at the high school. The board met with Nick Hildebrandt of StruXture Architects, Waterloo, reviewed potential remodeling plans and the findings of community focus groups. Preliminary cost estimates for improvements are nearly $11 million, according to Hildebrandt. The entire project would take about three years to complete. “If we go to a bond issue, what will our community support first? asked Tyler Williams, superintendent. “There is so much communication and education that has to take place. Tim Tusha wanted to see the project done in four phases or categories. “As a board we need to have some work sessions, Tusha said. “There’s a lot to digest here. A key question is the future of the Garner-Hayfield and Ventura school districts. The schools are in the second year of a whole-grade sharing
agreement. “We need to have a lot more time with the Ventura board to see what the near future is going to be, stated Dave Zrostlik. “[The public] wants to know there is real commitment between our two schools. “They’re saying, yeah, we’re forward thinking and progressive, but we want to be smart about it, too, said Tim Tusha. Fuller property The board of education unanimously approved a letter of acceptance for the donation of 13 acers of land from the Lyle Fuller Family Trust to the Garner-Hayfield School District. The property adjoins the current school property. Organizational Meeting The meeting included the oath of office to Pam Roberts and Jack Toppin, who were elected to the GarnerHayfield board on Sept. 10. Retiring board member, Jon Gamerdinger was thanked for his years of service on the school board. Jim Thiele was elected school board president. Tim Tusha will serve as vice president. Dave Zrostilk will be the GarnerHayfield delegate at the Iowa School Board Association delegate assembly in November with Jack Toppin as the guest delegate. Jack Toppin was GH BOARD to page 7
