The idea for it came from a member of the high school Drama Club who served as a production director for it.

Student Marisiya Goins suggested the project which included a preshow experience where

children enjoyed some character meet-andgreets, photo ops, crafts, themed games, and VIP concert seating. The main concert was held later that day.

Schools Celebrate The Season Of Giving

By Bob Vosseller MANCHESTER – The township School District recently noted two special programs that will warm the body and spirit of residents of the community.

The district was busy planning ahead for what might be a brutal winter through a new district-wide service project to support Code Blue, focused on collecting cold-weather essentials for individuals expe-

riencing homelessness in Ocean County. This marks the second year for the project which is now expanding to include the Impact Clubs.

Each school in the district had a large Code Blue collection box in its main lobby, inviting families and staff to donate winter items such as hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and blankets. All donations will be delivered to a (Giving - See Page 7)

Community Cooperation Cited At Council Meeting

By Bob Vosseller MANCHESTER – It’s been said that you have to break some eggs when you make an omelet but Mayor Joseph Hankins recently noted an example that when you drop some eggs from the top of a fire truck ladder, that with some proper engineering, not all of them will break.

During a recent council meeting the mayor provided an example of how different agencies such as the township school district and fire company worked together on an interesting community project that involved students, firefighters and eggs.

costume and joined their families for a whimsical, student-led fundraising concert featuring many beloved Disney songs and a special sing-along finale.

Marisiya suggested to Hubbard to have a Disney theme for their fall production.

This replaced the club’s traditional murder mystery production which is primarily aimed at an older audience.

“We really empowered her to be the student director. It is not in name only.

She really has taken point on this project,” Hubbard told The Manchester Times. “We are very proud of her.”

Marisiya was very happy with the turnout of the “Happily Ever After Hour which she described as “kind of like the bibbity, bobbity boutique. It was a nice hour of face painting, balloons, crafts, meeting real Disney princesses that had the kids come and get excited before the actual show.”

She said her fellow students and performers enjoyed this experience as much as she did. “They were super going along with it.

They were great. Coming from a student director they felt they could talk to me more about it and I got to incorporate their ideas right into their songs and performances.”

“All of this was by the students which was really great,” Marisiya said.

Her favorite Disney musical production is “Moana.” The 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios film is set in ancient Polynesia and tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a coastal village.

“It was my favorite ever since it came out,” Marisiya said. She sang a song from the film during “Magic in Manchester.”

Hubbard said “in addition to Marisiya’s lovely solo from “Moana,” our three advisors, Katie Sherman is music and drama teacher at our elementary school so the three of us (Hubbard, Kaczor and Sherman) sang as a trio in one of the numbers which is called the princess power pop medley and it is a medley of all the princess songs.”

The show opened with “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast” and the show ended with “Let it Go” from “Frozen” and all the children in the audience were invited to sing along. Hubbard said that was chosen as the final number because “you can’t just sit there and not let it go.”

“We had some songs from “The Princess and the Frog.” We had songs from that so we had Princess Tiana.” That film features the lead character, Tiana, dreaming of opening the finest restaurant in New Orleans. Her dream takes a slight detour when she meets Prince Naveen, who has been turned into an amphibian by evil Dr. Facilier.

Marisiya was excited about Bruno from the “Encanto” movie which was an uplifting film that celebrated family culture, Colombian heritage, and the power of magic.

“That was a really good number.”

Kaczor talked about the student choir that was involved in the production. “We have a choir of 20 this year and they sang a choral arrangement “Once Upon A Dream” from “Sleeping Beauty.” The production also had a Cinderella number.

Nearly three years after residents were forced out when Ocean County bought the property for open space, the emotional and financial fallout has not eased. More than 70 former tenants are parties to a lawsuit in Superior Court, fighting over what happened and how the displacement reshaped their lives Their accounts do not read like legal claims.

They read like survival stories.

How It All Began Residents say the County was misled in thinking that Surf and Stream was only a seasonal campground. Families lived there year-round, received their mail there, and even listed the address with employers. School buses stopped at the entrance each morning, cars filled the sites through winter, and some families had lived on the same lots for decades. Matthew Higgins, 44, was among them.

“My family has been there longer than anyone I know,” said Higgins, whose brother was also displaced. “I lived there on and off growing up, but I started living there year-round in 2012 and stayed until it closed.”

Once the County completed the purchase, demolition plans proceeded and residents were told they had to leave. According to the lawsuit, that directive triggered relocation assistance obligations under state law. Former tenants say those obligations were ignored, leaving them on their own as they scrambled to find housing during one of the region’s worst affordability crises.

The Manchester Times, December 20, 2025, Page 5 Marie Cicalo ran the office at Surf and Stream and remembered the fear spreading from one trailer to the next. She took it upon herself to help in the only way she could. Before losing her position, she spent days photocopying leases, rent receipts, and any document that might later prove a resident’s tenancy.

“I copied every file I could,” she said. “People were going to need paperwork, and I was afraid no one else would protect them.”

Her instincts proved right. Many residents later discovered that agencies, landlords, and assistance programs required extensive documentation. Without Marie’s copies, several would not have had proof at all.

Still, the paperwork did little to prevent the financial hardship that followed. Residents described paying as much as $75 per housing application, although the applications rarely led to anything more than a spot on an extensive waiting list.

“They threw us out like we were vermin,” shared Higgins. “Here I was a disabled person, going from apartment complex to another with good credit. I can’t tell you the thousands I wasted, and time and effort desperately trying to find a place to go.”

Sixty-eight-year-old John Renouf, who has suffered multiple heart attacks, was unable to move his trailer before the shutdown. “I lived in my car for about two or three weeks,” he said, before staying in his brother’s basement.

His applications were repeatedly denied.

“They tell me I have eviction and abandonment charges on me,” he said. “They tell me they can’t rent to me.”

Kaitlyn Ludlam, 36, moved to Surf and Stream in 2019 with her three children. She ran

a cleaning business but lacked the traditional pay stubs many agencies require. Residents were expected to leave by late October 2022, but Ludlam remained until December 1 when the power lines to her trailer were cut.

Ludlum spent her entire tax return on motel rooms while bouncing between friends’ homes. During that period, her boyfriend died of heart failure at only 36. Her children initially remained in the Manchester School District under homeless protections, then transferred to Toms River when temporary housing was found.

The single mother’s rental subsidy ends this month. “I have been working as many hours as possible so I can have $2,400 for rent,” she said. Her current work includes cleaning homes, harvesting produce, and boxing baked goods. She recently earned her CDL in hopes of finding a more stable job. “If I have to work fifty hours a week and another overnight job to make ends meet, I am going to do it.”

Hardworking Lives Upended Twice Dawn Gray, and her husband Jim Ackerman, both 55, moved to the campground in 2019 after the Beachwood home they had owned for fifteen years went into foreclosure. Ackerman, a flooring installer, survived liver cancer and a transplant eight years ago but could no longer work. Despite hardship letters and medical documentation, the family said their mortgage company pushed the foreclosure through quickly.

After leaving Surf and Stream, they moved their trailer to a park in New Gretna where the rent was initially affordable. Within a month, new owners doubled the rent and ordered

Attorney Kevin Starkey, who represents the former residents, said the legal requirements are clear and the County did not meet them.

Ocean County denies wrongdoing. County Counsel Laura Benson declined to comment, stating that it would be inappropriate to comment on pending litigation.

Cicalo, who collected documents and quietly tried to protect every resident she could, summed up the collective experience. “These people have been through more than anyone understands,” she said. “They deserve justice, and they deserve to be heard.”

Whether the courts deliver that justice remains uncertain. What is clear is that the families of Surf and Stream still carry the weight of a displacement that upended their lives, and the hope that someone will finally acknowledge what they lost.

residents out for utility upgrades. Forced out again, Gray and Ackerman moved their trailer into the nearby woods, where they lived until November 2024.

Gray also suffered the loss of her sister, 58-year-old Lorraine McHugh, who had been diabetic and a recent amputee. McHugh also lived at Surf and Stream and died after suffering cardiac arrest while staying in the woods.

They were not the only family who sought refuge in the outdoors and subsequently lost loved ones.

Drake also noted that during the latest Manchester Township Coordinating Council meeting Judy Noonan, who serves as the mayor’s confidential aide “received flowers

and a card for all the things she does for our seniors and our community so Judy thanks for representing us.”

During the public comment period Noonan spoke about Senate Bill 4751 sponsored by 30th District Senator Robert Singer which concerns property protection and notifying homeowners about anyone trying to get their mortgage.

Noonan also spoke about Mayor Hankins, Councilwoman Drake and members of the Manchester Township PBA helping deliver food items provided by the Brick Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Culinary Department for Thanksgiving meals for township residents in need as part of a distribution program by the non-profit agency, Somebody Cares Inc.

our students demonstrate every day.”

The district encourages everyone to participate and help fill the Code Blue boxes throughout the collection period this winter.

Members of the School District also concluded the 43rd year for a very popular seasonal program, Kevin’s Kids.

Unlike traditional gift drives, Kevin’s Kids does not collect general donations. Instead, community members, staff, and local organizations come together to confidentially shop for the specific wish lists submitted by school district families requesting support during the holiday season.

This year, volunteers gathered at the Brick

Township Target store which opened early exclusively for this effort. In addition to people donating specific items, they donated money and gift cards to help the shoppers buy everything else on the lists.

Bus drivers volunteered to bring loads of gifts back to the Kevin’s Kids North Pole.

There, hundreds of volunteers wrapped the gifts in preparation for delivery. The district’s maintenance and custodial crews also volunteer their time to assemble bikes and larger toys.

Due to the countless hours of all these volunteers, more than 300 children enjoyed a very special holiday season this year.

OPINIONS & COMMENTARY FEATURED LETTER Local Help Needed To Protect Arctic National Wildlife Refuge From the smallest insects to the largest predators, vast arrays of wildlife fill ecosystems globally. As a Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy student at Monmouth University, each day when I step outside my door, my day is filled with fauna ranging from squirrels running around campus to dolphins leaping out of the ocean. Although nature is still fighting to exist, our world is dominated by busy roads, buildings as far as the eye can see, and pollution. There are only a few places left in the world where true wilderness still thrives, and one of these

places is the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

This land is rich with animals such as polar bears, caribou, seals, foxes, various birds, and more. Beauty extends throughout the 19.6 million acres, but it is currently facing a devastating threat that would bring this to an end.

This land is not empty; it is a complex ecosystem full of life. Although you may have never set foot here, you are connected to this land. Various animals migrate between lands, such as the birds that can even be found in your backyard. We have grown up seeing this wildlife in the books read as children, on television, and even in zoos.

They have been with us our entire lives, and now we are failing them. Oil and gas drilling is currently threatening this home, and it will affect you, too. Beloved animals will die, habitats will be destroyed, water and air will be polluted, and global climate change will accelerate.

This irreplaceable national treasure will be lost in the name of the short-term profit of drilling.

The government has made an aggressive push to undo Arctic protections. Representative Nick Begich of Alaska introduced a resolution (H.J. Res. 131) seeking to overturn previous protections in place.

The whiplash of opening and

closing protections leaves the wildlife to suffer the most.

Every voice matters in this fight, and change is possible.

Congress needs to enact permanent protections, ensuring this land is here for future generations to see for themselves. It is up to us to ensure that these animals are not read about in history books or only seen in a museum, wondering what it would be like for them to still be alive today. This fight isn’t trying to halt energy production everywhere; this fight is to recognize that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is too important to lose. Protection for the Arctic would mean preserving biodiversity and

preventing the acceleration of global climate change for years to come.

This is an issue for me, I am a young college student about to enter the world. My purpose in life is to give a voice to the voiceless animals of the world, and I want to see these animals live another day.

This is an issue for you, as the world is facing environmental threats that will have devastating impacts. This is an issue for our nation, as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is ours to protect. Saving this land is an issue for all, no matter who you are or what you believe. Everyone has the capacity to have the heart to save a life, just as valuable as

your own. Once this wildlife and land dies, it doesn’t come back.

The opportunity to choose long-term life over a shortterm profit has presented itself. Congress has the power to ensure that the Arctic lives to see another day, where nature can thrive, and we can be proud to call this national treasure part of our home. The animals in the Arctic need more than just my voice; they need every voice willing to fight this irreversible destruction.

After watching and listening to many of our senators, congresspeople and the news media this year, it’s taught me that truth, honesty, and kindness matter!

Leaders Need To Grow Up I was very disheartened at the conduct of our administration during the council meeting when Chris Pollak was sworn in. Mayor Khun should not have made an issue out of “this town” vs “our town.” If it bothered her so much she should have talked with him privately. Chris should not have responded the way he did. Saying that nobody likes her is like a juvenile on a playground, not to mention, wrong. Pointing out that she wasn’t elected is also wrong. That isn’t her fault. That was due to Reina’s actions, not hers.

This reminded me of the days of Reina vs Kafton. As a town, we cannot afford to go back there. It wasn’t productive then, and it won’t be now. Egos need to be left at the door. They don’t belong in a meeting, and they certainly won’t help bring our town forward. We as a town need to work together, and that includes our administration.

We all need to be able to respectfully disagree. Only then can positive change begin.

Political Wish List I’ve just completed my Christmas list for this year.

First, I’d like to see mandatory terms limits for all elected public officials.

Second, and perhaps the most important, that research scientists come up with an over-the-counter, non-prescription vaccine, which would permanently cure President Trump of his malignant narcissism and foot-in-mouth disease; two conditions that have plagued the president all his adult life.

Third, it really would be a nice Christmas present to see Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, say something - anything - without reading it from a prepared written script behind a lectern.

My fourth holiday wish is that the “word salad queen” and former presidential candidate Kamala Harris would do all of us a favor and just go away.

Next, it would also be nice this Christmas not to hear ad nauseam, Bill O’Reilly whine about how secularists and non-believers are trying to “steal” Christmas.

Bill Would Ensure Responsible National Guard Deployments Capitol Comments Senator Cory Booker

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced the Notification of Troop Involvement and Congressional Engagement (NOTICE) Act, legislation that would require the President to notify Congress and provide a clear justification before deploying the National Guard for law enforcement purposes.

Since January 2025, President Trump has deployed the National Guard to several American cities without clear justification, raising legal and constitutional concerns.

Most of these deployments have been made under a section of federal law that allows the President to take operational control of the National Guard under limited and extraordinary circumstances to repel foreign invasion, suppress rebellion, or

when regular forces are unable to enforce federal law. The current law does not require the President to notify Congress with a justification for using the National Guard for domestic law enforcement, leaving this authority vulnerable to abuse. The NOTICE Act would require the President to provide Congress a clear justification for deploying National Guard domestically, restoring balance to Congress’ constitutional oversight authority.

Specifically, the NOTICE Act would require the President to submit detailed notifications to Congress within 24 hours of any Title 10 Sec. 12406 deployment and provide ongoing updates if the deployment exceeds 48 hours.

Notifications would include: • A good faith claim for federalizing the National Guard; • A specific description of the invasion, including the United States territory, the foreign power, and the act or acts of the foreign power that constitute an invasion

necessitating the deployment; • The rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States, including the place and time of the rebellion, the person, persons, or group engaged in the rebellion, and the activities of those engaged in the rebellion necessitating the deployment of the National Guard; • The laws of the United States which the President is unable to execute, the reasons that regular military forces are unable to execute the law, and, where the President is taking such action without the consent of the Governor of the State, evidence of the Governor’s inability or refusal to provide for the safety and welfare of the public, or the Governor’s refusal to obey a court order, or other active steps the Governor has taken to obstruct the President from faithfully executing the law; • The geographical area where the National Guard will be called to, and the duration of the federalization of the National Guard; • The training received by the National Guard; • The chain of command under which the National Guard will be placed and their

requirements to communicate with state and local forces.

“Over the last 10 months, Donald Trump has assumed control of the National Guard to send troops into American cities without a clear objective or purpose. Under the guise of crime control, he has weaponized the military against our own citizens as punishment directed at Democratic-led cities,” said Senator Booker. “These actions are a gross abuse of his limited authority to federalize the National Guard. This is happening in plain sight and must not be normalized.

The NOTICE Act requires the President to notify Congress within 24 hours of any National Guard deployment so we can provide meaningful oversight, ensuring these decisions are within constitutional bounds and our communities and members of the military are kept safe.”

The NOTICE Act is cosponsored by the U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Alex Padilla (D-CA), and Mark Kelly (D-AZ).

“The Last Secretary Of Education” Visits Local School

By Andrew Rice COLTS NECK - Secretary of Education Linda McMahon made an appearance at Cedar Drive Middle School in Colts Neck as part of the nationwide “History Rocks!” tour, which aims to promote civics and American history education.

The visit is tied to the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, a partnership involving the U.S. Department of Education and dozens of national organizations, including the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, Moms for Liberty, and others.

The Colts Neck Board of Education, and in particular, President Angelique Volpe, is credited with reaching out early, which helped bring national recognition to the district. The

tour will visit schools in all 50 states by the time it is finished.

During her visit to the school, McMahon and her team participated in a school-wide assembly, visited individual classrooms and toured several student showcases, and met with select district officials, teachers, and students. The assembly itself included a presentation of the colors by Colts Neck High School’s ROTC program, the playing of several patriotic songs like “America the Beautiful” by the Cedar Drive Middle School band, a speech by McMahon, and games for the students, where they asked basic questions about American history to the whole school.

A reporter voiced concern to McMahon that this would be a political visit rather than an

educational one.

“Well, I don’t think there’s politics today,” she said. “I think that history and civics and love of country, patriotism, crosses every political boundary, and that is not something that should divide.”

“Every citizen of this country needs to understand that this is the greatest country in the world and there is no politics involved in that,” she said.

When a reporter asked McMahon about an accusation by Democrats that Department of Education responsibilities are being transferred to other departments, she replied: “My job, the president hired me to be the last Secretary of Education.”

Protestors gathered outside of Cedar Drive

Middle School to protest the assembly itself and to speak against the core values of the people and the organizations that are running it. They disagreed with the political beliefs that they thought were being forced on the kids and were skeptical of the intentions of the groups that are behind McMahon’s tour. Many of them stated that they do not agree that something political of this nature has any place in a school system.

Another one of the major complaints of the protestors is that they were denied access to what they claim was being called a public meeting.

Two Rescued After Night Stuck In Frozen Mud

By Jason Allentoff MANCHESTER – Two people were rescued after spending the night trapped in a vehicle mired in a frozen mud puddle in the Greenwood Forest section of town, authorities said.

Whiting Fire Company Station 33 was dispatched around 9:01 a.m. on December 5 for a report of a disabled vehicle with potential medical concerns near the Hidden Lakes area.

Fire crews responded with Brush 3339 and UTV 3307, officials said.

Emergency personnel found the vehicle stuck off the main trail with both occupants exposed to cold and wet conditions for several hours.

Firefighters helped the individuals out of the vehicle and began initial medical assessments in the remote terrain.

UTV 3307 was used to shuttle additional Whiting firefighters and members of Manchester Squad 13 to the scene. The patients were taken to a Manchester Police vehicle positioned on a more accessible trail, providing a controlled environment before being transported to waiting Manchester EMS and RWJ ALS units for further treatment.

The fire company noted that the donated UTV has played a key role in numerous emergencies throughout the year.

WHITING – The Crestwood Village 3 Travel Club has lined up a full slate of outings for 2026, including several Atlantic City casino runs, a spring trip to Cape May and a summer theater and dinner package on Long Beach Island.

The first casino trip is scheduled for February 19, 2026, to Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. The cost is $40 and includes round-trip transportation and a $25 casino bonus. Travelers will meet at Unity Hall at 8:45 a.m. and return at about 5:45 p.m. A valid government-issued ID is required to receive the casino bonus, which is subject to change without notice. A snow date is set for February 26, 2026.

A second trip to Resorts Casino is planned for March 31, 2026. That outing also costs $40 and includes round-trip transportation and a $20 casino bonus. Departure and return times are the same: gather at Unity Hall at 8:45 a.m. and return at about 5:45 p.m.

Bonuses are subject to change, and a valid government-issued ID is required.

On May 7, 2026, the club will head to Cape May for a Mansion Trolley Tour and lunch at the Lobster House. The $150 package includes transportation, lunch, the “Mansions by the Sea” trolley tour, time to browse the Washington Street Mall and all gratuities.

Entrée choices are Broiled Flounder, Broiled Scallops or Chicken Francaise. A $50 deposit, along with a menu selection, is being collected now to reserve seats. A second $50 payment is due by February 9, 2026, and the

final $50 payment is due by March 31, 2026.

The group will meet at Unity Hall at 8:45 a.m. and return at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Another Resorts Casino trip is scheduled for June 11, 2026. The $40 fee includes roundtrip transportation and an $18 casino bonus.

Participants will gather at Unity Hall at 8:45 a.m. and return at about 5:45 p.m. Casino bonuses may change without notice, and a valid government-issued ID is required.

The club will mark America’s upcoming 250th birthday with a special cultural trip on August 20, 2026, to see the musical “1776” at Surflight Theatre, followed by dinner at the Waterfront Restaurant. The $155 trip includes transportation, the show, dinner and all gratuities. Dinner choices are Filet Mignon, Drunken Parmesan (meatball and chicken cutlet Parmesan), Chicken Napoli or Barnegat Light Sea Scallops. A $50 deposit with menu choice is being accepted now to reserve seats. A second $50 payment is due

by May 18, 2026, and the final $55 payment is due by July 13, 2026. Travelers will meet at Unity Hall at 11:45 a.m. and return at about 8:15 p.m.

Deposits will be refunded only if a trip is canceled.

County Urges Seniors To Report Suspicious Medicare Calls, Mailings

OCEAN COU NTY – Off icials are warning residents to stay alert for potential Medicare scams as reports increase about unsolicited phone calls, unexpected mailings and unannounced visits from individuals claiming to represent Medicare.

Authorities say some residents have received calls from people posing as Medicare representatives or plan providers, offering to change or “update” their coverage. Others have reported strangers arriving at their homes with f lyers or marketing materials promoting alternative Medicare plans.

Seniors are also urged to watch their

mail closely. If a packet arrives welcoming them to a plan they did not sign up for, it may indicate their coverage was switched without their knowledge or consent.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted is encouraged to contact the Senior Medicare Patrol at 877-808-2468 or by emailing info@smpresource.org.

For residents who need assistance comparing plans or determining which Medicare option best fits their needs, the county’s Office of Senior Services offers free guidance through its State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Counselors can be reached at 732-929-2091.

WHITING – The Pineland Symphonic Band, a community ensemble of quality musicians that perform a variety of music is now looking for more members, especially clarinet players.

OCVTS Sets Open House To Showcase Career Training Programs

TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Vocational Technical School district will host a districtwide open house on February 5, 2026, offering prospective high school students and adults a chance to explore more than 30 career and technical education programs.

The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. across multiple sites, including the Toms River, Brick and Jackson centers, the Grunin Performing Arts Academy on the Ocean County College campus, and Cuisine on the Green in Little Egg Harbor.

Visitors can tour facilities, view student demonstrations, and speak with instructors about available programs.

OCVTS will introduce several new offerings in Fall 2026, including Veterinary Assistant, Civil Engineering CADD

and Surveying, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training.

The district will also highlight featured programs such as Design and Visual Communications and Culinary Arts.

How I Saved Someone Thousands On Their Prescription In 5 Minutes

By Suzy Cohen, R. Ph. Have you ever been standing at the pharmacy counter, minding your own business, when the clerk says, “That’ll be 958 dollars,” and you briefly exit your body? I used to be that pharmacist delivering the sticker shock, though I always tried to soften the blow.

I’ve seen people turn pale, mutter words I can’t print here, and leave the pharmacy crying. Back in the 1990s, we didn’t have Google at our fingertips or smartphones in our pockets, and patient assistance programs (PAPs) were mostly reserved for people with no insurance at all.

Today, I want to be your hero and explain more about PAPs and how they can slash the cost of many brand-name prescriptions. These programs are offered by the manufacturer, not the pharmacy, and you can save a small fortune if you know how.

Here’s an example. A friend’s husband was prescribed Xifaxan. His GI-MAP test showed bacterial overgrowth, finally explaining years of stubborn stomach symptoms. His doctor prescribed 42 tablets (a two-week supply). The pharmacy prices comes up at $2,448. The poor guy nearly needed CPR. His wife (my friend) texted me in a panic. I said, “Don’t pay that, give me a minute.”

Step 1: I Googled “Xifaxan copay card.”

Ten seconds. I see that the manufacturer has a savings program on their website.

Many brand-name drugs do. I let her know.

Step 2: They fill out the form which requires name, email, insurance info, and 30 seconds later - boom! The site instantly generates a digital “card” with

four magic numbers: BIN, PCN, Group, and ID. Step 3: She read those numbers to the pharmacist. The price dropped from $2,448 to about $759. That’s a 70 percent savings in under five minutes! Tell me that isn’t sorcery.

Another quick example: A doctor prescribes a topical analgesic product called Pennsaid for knee pain. The items is priced at $1,500. Just FYI, Pennsaid is just diclofenac, what you probably know as Voltaren Gel. I found a PAP for Pennsaid itself, and the price drops from $1,500 to free for this particular patient!

You might be wondering, Why doesn’t the pharmacy tell me if there’s a PAP for a medicine? Because they’re juggling interactions, insurance rejections, refills, long lines, and printers that freeze up.

Besides, it’s always up to the consumer to find the best price on things they want to buy. Just so you know, pharmacists are salaried, so it doesn’t affect their pay one bit whether you’re charged a sky-high price or get your medication for nothing.

So, you have to become a savvy patient.

Here’s how: • Google your medication name plus “savings program” or “copay card.”

• Click ONLY the manufacturer ’s website.

• Fill out the quick form.

• Screenshot the card with the BIN, PCN number, Group number and ID. • Call the pharmacy and read the numbers.

• Watch the price collapse.

Shea & Associates A Power of Attorney (POA) is an important legal document that allows you to choose someone you trust to manage your financial or personal affairs if you need help. The document itself is called the “power of attorney,” and the person you appoint is known as your “attorney-in-fact” or “agent.”

There are two common types of Powers of Attorney: • Immediate POA – Your chosen agent can act as soon as the document is signed, and can continue to do so even if you later become unable to make decisions on your own.

• Springing POA – Your agent can only act if you become incapacitated (for example, due to illness or cognitive decline). It “springs” into action when it is needed.

A question many clients ask is: Should my POA be effective right away, or only if I can’t manage things myself anymore?

There isn’t one right answer—what works best depends on your personal circumstances and your comfort level. For many married couples, an immediate POA feels natural. Spouses often already share access to bank accounts and property, so allowing a partner to step in when needed can make handling finances easier, especially as health needs change.

However, if you are naming an adult child, relative, or trusted friend instead of a spouse, you

may prefer that their authority only begins if you become unable to act for yourself. Younger adults commonly choose this “springing” option, especially if they are perfectly capable of managing their own affairs today.

Many seniors, on the other hand, recognize that even while fully competent, everyday tasks such as paying bills or dealing with insurance can become burdensome. In these cases, giving a trusted agent the ability to help right away can provide peace of mind and avoid unnecessary delays.

A common misconception is worrying that signing a POA means losing control over their own choices. That is not true. TOMS RIVER – Ocean County officials are seeking residents interested in mentoring elementary school students through a county-run lunchtime program aimed at providing children with extra support and guidance.

The Ocean County Mentoring Program is recruiting volunteers who can commit to meeting with a student once a week during their lunch break. Organizers say the sessions are informal and focus on conversation, listening, and building positive

connections.

Barry Steinmetz, the program coordinator with the Ocean County Department of Juvenile Services, said the initiative offers a simple but meaningful way for adults to make a difference in a child’s life.

The program is sponsored by the Ocean County Board of Commissioners and the Department of Law and Public Safety.

New Philly Cruise Terminal To Set Sail In 2026

JERSEY SHORE – Do you enjoy taking cruises? Travelers will soon have a brandnew option about an hour and 25 minutes from the Jersey Shore, as the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal is set to open on April 15, 2026.

The 16-acre site next to Philadelphia International Airport will serve as Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest homeport, offering 41 yearly sailings to Bermuda, the

Caribbean and Canada under a seven-year agreement. The project is expected to generate more than 2,100 jobs and pump $300 million annually into Pennsylvania’s economy.

The opening marks Philadelphia’s return to cruise service for the first time since 2011, giving South Jersey residents a closer alternative to Bayonne, New York and Baltimore.

I don’t even know if that is legal,” said Kyler Dineen, one of the protestors who leads an organization called NJ voters for church and state separation. It was that same organization that started a petition to have the Colts Neck Board of Education cancel McMahon’s visit, because they said they wanted to keep propaganda out of schools. He unsuccessfully ran for New Jersey Assembly as a Democrat in the 12th District this year.

On top of that, major news sources and publications, like The New York Times and MS NOW, were denied access to the event.

All protestors who were interviewed said that they believe that New Jersey schools are non-partisan neutral grounds or are at least they are meant to be.

“They have brought politics into the district.

New Jersey schools are nonpartisan. When you enter a school board, as a former school board member, you check your politics at the door, and you are here to educate the kids,” said one protestor in reference to the current Colts Neck Board of Education.

“This is not a protest of Linda McMahon’s visit in it of itself, I don’t think, I mean, I personally

wouldn’t have a problem with the sitting US Secretary of Education visiting a school. To me, it’s very specifically the organizations that are involved in the coalition that are the reason why she is here is to promote the work of that coalition. She is here to promote civics-based education of a group that was formed with our US tax dollars. With groups that have very clear political, religious motivations behind them.

Schools overall should be neutral grounds.”

The superintendent of the Colts Neck Board of Education, Dr. MaryJane Garibay, said that the event itself was a part of a non-partisan initiative.

Since they were prevented from accessing the event, the protestors organized their efforts at the front entrance to the school’s parking lot.

Much of the discontent that the protestors had during the event seemed to stem from how the current presidential administration has been handling education, distrust of the groups that are behind McMahon’s appearance in Colts Neck and her tour overall, and how the current board of education seems willing to inject what the protestors deem to be propaganda into the schools.

The next meeting of the Colts Neck Board of Education will be on December 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the board room at 70 Conover Road.

Around The Jersey Shore State Police Superintendent Announces Retirement

NEW JERSEY – New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Patrick J. Callahan will step down at the end of the year, closing out a 31-year career marked by service through multiple administrations and some of the state’s most challenging emergencies. His retirement becomes effective December 31, 2025.

Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has not yet named a successor.

Governor Phil Murphy commended Callahan’s tenure, describing him as “the very essence of a career public servant” and noting that the colonel played a key role in his Cabinet.

Callahan joined the State Police in 1995 and worked his way up the ranks, first becoming acting superintendent in 2017 under then-Governor Chris Chris-

tie before being confirmed in the role under Murphy. He helped oversee major statewide responses, including the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, New Jersey’s COVID-19 operations, and emergency planning surrounding events such as Super Bowl XLVIII. In a statement announcing his retirement, Callahan said he was proud of the division’s accomplishments and grateful for the dedication of the troopers he served alongside.

He added that leaving the position carries personal significance, as he follows in the footsteps of his father, retired Major Mick Callahan.

“To each and every Jersey trooper,” he said, “stay safe out there and God bless you all.”

Around The Jersey Shore Ocean County Sheriff’s Captain Retires After Nearly 25 Years

By Jason Allentoff TOMS RIVER – Captain Robert J. Woardell has retired from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office after nearly a quarter-century of service marked by leadership, technical expertise and a deep commitment to public safety.

Woardell joined the agency in January 2001, beginning his career in the Judicial Division during a period of heightened courthouse security following the September 11 attacks. He later moved to the Criminalistics Investigation Unit — now known as Crime Scene Investigation — where he became certified in latent fingerprint comparison. He helped establish the Latent Evidence Bureau, which laid the groundwork for what would eventually grow into the county’s Forensic Video Evidence Unit. His efforts supported countless investigations and prosecutions across Ocean County.

Throughout his career, Woardell held a series of supervisory and project-driven roles, contributing to major initiatives ranging from the countywide First Responder Identification Card Program to multi-agency operations such as the Barnegat Bay Blitz. He also helped advance key communications upgrades, including a new 9-1-1 system, Computer Aided Dispatch enhancements and Text-to-9-1-1 technology. During Superstorm Sandy, he was assigned to assist devastated waterfront neighborhoods and support displaced residents in emergency shelters in both Ocean and Monmouth counties.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he coordinated county testing site operations in partnership with the Ocean County Health Department and state officials. He simultaneously continued oversight of Professional Standards, Internal Affairs, accreditation, policy development and infrastructure projects throughout the agency.

Outside his Sheriff’s Office duties, Woardell has served with the Point Pleasant Borough Fire Department since 1995, rising through the ranks to lieutenant and deputy chief.

Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy thanked Woardell for his decades of service and leadership, offering well wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.

Library Announces Holiday Closures

TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Library System will suspend in-person services during the upcoming holidays, with all branches and reading centers closed December 24 and December 25.

Normal operating hours will resume December 26.

The system will also close at 5 p.m. on

December 31 and remain closed January 1. Branches will reopen January 2 with regular schedules.

Around The Jersey Shore Experts Stress Toy Safety During Holiday Shopping Season

NEW JERSEY – With holiday shopping in full swing, pediatric specialists at Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health are urging families to keep safety top of mind when buying gifts and decorating their homes.

One of the biggest tips: check age recommendations on toys. “These labels are based on safety testing, not a child’s maturity,” said Marie Grace Ponce, M.D., of K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. “Toys meant for older kids may have small parts or require skills younger children don’t yet have.”

Toy-related injuries remain common. In 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded 10 child deaths and nearly 155,000 emergency-room visits tied to toys. Falls from bikes and scooters make up a large share.

Key safety reminders include • Avoid choking hazards — anything that fits through a toilet paper tube is unsafe for children under three.

• Keep button batteries and small magnets away — they can cause life-threatening

internal injuries if swallowed.

• Match riding toys to a child’s size and skill, and always include protective gear.

• Secure heavy or fragile decorations to prevent injuries.

Holiday décor can also pose risks. Breakable ornaments and those with small pieces should be placed high on the tree, said Virteeka Sinha, M.D., of Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. She also warned about poisonous plants such as mistletoe and holly berries, and emphasized keep-

ing real trees watered and candles out of children’s reach.

Other hazards include visitors’ handbags with medications, leftover packaging from toys, and hot foods or drinks near table edges. Small seasonal foods like nuts and hard candies can also be choking risks.

Doctors say a few simple precautions — reading labels, clearing hazards and keeping risky items out of reach — can help ensure a safe and happy holiday season for children.

By Bob Vosseller OCEAN COUNTY – Out of tragedy, some good can come and that is what drew people to the 6th Annual Purpose and Hope 5 Kilometer Run at the Island Heights municipal complex on the rainy morning of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. The event was coordinated by the founders of Purpose and Hope - Kevin M. Schmiegel, his sister Kirsten Schenk and her husband David who is a captain in the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

Schmiegel, a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps, spoke candidly to Jersey Shore Online.com and later to the public about his own mental health struggles.

He explained how the non-profit support organization formed. “This is six years in the making. The race was started in memory of my nephew Christian Schenk who essentially finished his training as a police officer during Covid and he took his own life on Easter Sunday. We are a big Catholic family and it was devastating for us.”

“My sister Kirsten wasn’t able to get out of bed. I was a non-profit leader. I ran major military and veteran non-profits to support our community and I called her up and said she should start a non-profit to help surviving families,” he added.

The race was held on International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, which is

recognized globally. He said the goal of this event is to educate others that this is an issue that every community faces.

He posed the question, “how do you get young people to recognize that we all struggle and that struggle is part of growth? If you can get people to support the families who lost loved ones to suicide, the community comes together, there is no stigma on the family and they support one another.”

He noted that those in the military, veterans, and first responders are especially vulnerable to severe depression that may lead to suicide because of the huge responsibilities and stress they face.

“Over time, we can come together as a community. We can help solve the issue by being more transparent and open about the issue. I struggle myself, post transition, how do you find purpose in your life or connect to community or the things you need to get through those struggles?” he asked.

“That is what it is all about. Part of the problem is people don’t want to talk about it. I am talking more publicly about my own struggles,” he added. “The saying is ‘It is okay to not be okay’ and you have to recognize that. You have to talk about things and you have to share your story.”

David and Larissa Colangelo are former Jackson residents who now live in Cookstown and came out for the event to remember David’s brother Mark. “He worked with me at the Ocean County Jail.

He died December 11, 2013. He took his life. There were no signs. I was a sergeant at the Ocean County Jail. He was an officer. We worked together for many years.

It came out of nowhere.”

“There is a lot of pressure and a lot of ups and downs with that job. I am sure that was part of it. We come here every year to show our support,” David Colangelo said.

Larissa Colangelo said two years ago the run served as tribute to her husband’s brother. “It was held on the 10th anniversary of his passing. If it wasn’t for Purpose and Hope we wouldn’t have the awareness.

I feel more people are talking about it now.

We never talked about it years ago and we didn’t tell anybody about it but now I think awareness is growing. More people I know have people suffering in their families.”

“Purpose and Hope really brought my family together in understanding suicide,” David Colangelo added.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, Prosecutor’s Office and cadets training currently at the Police Academy came out for the event. Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer and Sheriff Michael Mastronardy also attended to show their support. There was also representation from county government.

“We need to find out what causes this. Is it the bond between the family members that is broken or is it a societal thing? We need to do more - there is no question about it. Is it the pressures on younger people? Social media? Young people today don’t talk to each other anymore, they are sitting at the dinner table and texting each other instead of actually conversing. We need to find out what the answer is,” he said.

Remembering Tom Winters Every year, the run names someone who has been lost and this year they focused on Tom Winters of Jackson.

Peter Winters said his brother Tom worked for 13 years as a lifeguard in Lavallette and Island Beach State Park and loved the ocean. He said his brother played soccer “on a team that won a lot of championships with Rob Johnson. He lived in Jackson from ’78 to 2005 or so. He went to college and served as a lifeguard and moved to California and lived in Florida until the end of his life. He loved fishing in Jackson. He loved the beach and the woods.”

“Tom Winters lived a life marked with a love of family, friendship and community.

He was a son, a brother and a proud uncle.

At 52 Tom lost his life to suicide. He is remembered for the challenges he faced, the smile he shared and the joyful laughter he brought to family and friends,” Schmiegel remarked.

Schmiegel said around 300 runners came out including the latest class of police cadets from the Ocean County Police Academy. “There is a story behind every Tom and every Christian and every family left behind and that is what you have to remember. Their memories do live on and they live on in part because you are here.”

Workshop To Support Relatives Raising Children

TOMS RIVER – A virtual training session aimed at helping relatives who are raising children will be held January 21, 2026, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The program is hosted by the Family and Community Health Sciences department at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County. The free workshop will introduce participants to KinKonnect, New Jersey’s Kinship Care Clearing House, and provide guidance on navigating special education services in the state.

KinKonnect staff will explain the resourc-

es available to kinship caregivers, including warm line assistance, a lending library, and access to statewide support materials. The presentation will also cover the basics of advocating for a child’s educational needs within the New Jersey Special Education system.

Diane Rossen Worthington Crustless quiche has become a beloved classic at our Christmas brunch, always taking center stage at the holiday table.

Quiche, once a novel French dish that took America by storm in the 1960s and ’70s, traditionally features a custard base with cheese and often vegetables, all baked inside a flaky crust. Sliced like pie and served with a simple green salad, quiche became the signature entrée for elegant lunches.

While a crisp, buttery crust is delicious, omitting it does little to detract from the rich, custardy, and cheesy filling. In fact, the absence of crust gives this quiche a lighter texture that my family now specifically requests. It’s wonderful to have a cherished family dish that everyone looks forward to during the holiday season.

Although asparagus is typically a spring vegetable, pencil-thin stalks often appear at the market around the holidays.

If asparagus isn’t available, thinly sliced zucchini makes a perfect substitute. The combination of Parmesan and Gruyere cheeses infuses the custard with a nutty, zesty flavor. While shredded carrots are optional, they provide a lovely contrast of color against the green vegetables.

Adding a touch of flour and baking powder gives the custard additional structure and a slight puffiness. This dish is a festive and flavorful addition to your Christmas celebration.

CARAMELIZED LEEK AND ASPARAGUS CRUSTLESS QUICHE

Serves 6 For the filling: 1/4 cup olive oil 5 leeks, light green and white part only, cleaned and thinly sliced

1 pound pencil thin asparagus, cleaned and cut into thirds, use the tips and the top of the stalks about, 4 cups 1/2 shredded carrots, optional Salt and pepper For the quiche: 6 eggs 2 cups milk 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper For the side salad: 2 cups arugula 1/4 cup favorite vinaigrette 1. Preheat the oven to 325 F. 2. Heat the oil in a large sauté pan on medium-high heat. Add the leeks and saute for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until lightly caramelized.

Add the asparagus and saute for about 4 to 5 minutes or until crisp tender, stirring occasionally. The asparagus will turn bright green. Season with salt and pepper. Cool.

3. Combine the eggs, milk, cheeses, flour, baking powder and salt and pepper in a medium bowl and whisk until completely blended.

4. Place the leek mixture on the bottom of a greased 11-inch quiche pan and evenly distribute.

5. Place the quiche pan on a foil-lined baking sheet and bake for about 45 minutes or until just firm. The center should be slightly jiggly. While the quiche is baking, toss the arugula with the vinaigrette and reserve.

6. Remove from the oven and let sit for 10 minutes. Cut into slices and serve immediately alongside arugula salad.
