RYHOPE FC v WEAR UNITED FC Division 3 Sunday 18th February 2018
Silksworth Sports Complex Kick Off 10.30am
MESSAGE FROM THE GAFFER
Hello again! Delighted with the lads last Sunday after a good start to the game to go behind and then to get back on top and end the game very strongly. We were missing a few players but everyone that was there stepped up to the mark and played for the badge and we got the deserved 5-2 win which moved us top of our group in the Jay McLaren Memorial Subsidiary cup with only two games remaining in the group stage. I don’t normally transfer players into the club as I am genuinely happy with our squad but an opportunity arose this week to bring in a 19 year old striker called Jack Croucher who showed us what he can do by scoring against us last Sunday and his movement and speed was also evident. When Jack approached me about coming to Wear United it was too good an opportunity to turn down and the paperwork was submitted and put through so Jack will be eligible to make his debut on Sunday. Welcome to the club Jack We have a very tough league game this Sunday against our bogey team Ryhope FC – we will need to be at our best to get something from the game and again we are missing a few key players Finally all our children’s team have now finished their winter league and have 2 weeks off before the Spring Cup starts – thank you to all the children and their families for their efforts and commitment in the Winter Leagues #wearforlife Thanks Michael

LAST TIME OUT - WEAR UNITED FC 5-2 MILLFIELD FREE GARDENERS FC United played their second match in the Jay McLaren Subsidiary Cup hoping to get a win to help them keep alive the hopes of progressing to the Semi Finals. United came up against Millfield Free Gardeners who United hammered 6-0 on the opening day of the season in the league but succumbed to a 2-1 defeat a month later so it wasn’t going to be an easy game United were missing several players through a number of reasons and for the first time in a long time went 4-4-2 due to the personnel available United came out of the blocks and controlled the opening stages with Stephen Keogh having the first attempt at goal within the first minute shooting straight at the keeper from 30 yards Richie Morton was next up to give it a go on 4 minutes shooting from the edge of the box. The shot took a couple of deflections which meant the ball went wide for a United corner but that came to nothing United’s pressure brought the first goal on 5 minutes. Joe Walters hit a shot from just outside the area which hit a defender and looped well over the bar for a United corner. Steve Barnes took the corner which went over everyone to the back post where Richie Morton kept it alive and lobbed it back towards goal. The ball was going in but Matty Colborn was on hand to make sure the ball hit the back of the net heading it in from a yard out to score his first ever United goal. 1-0 to United Free Gardeners first chance came on 8 minutes but it was a shot from the edge of the box which was straight at Stu Bowman and he gathered it easily Joe Walters long throw ins were causing a few issues and on 13 minutes another throw in was headed by Steve Barnes but it went high and over the bar Sam Wade was looking to become the outright clubs top scorer and had a chance on 18 minutes when a Richie Morton cross landed nicely on his head but the header went narrowly wide of the goal Free Gardeners started to get back into the game and had a glorious opportunity on 24 minutes when a ball into the box was laid off to the edge of the area but the shot went wide of the goal A minute later and Free Gardeners had a corner which Joe Walters headed out but a shot came in from outside the box which thankfully flew high and wide Free Gardeners though took advantage of their pressure scoring an equaliser on 27 minutes. A ball down the right hand side was pulled back and hammered into the net from 15 yards giving Stu Bowman no chance. 1-1 Just after the half hour United had another corner. Richie Morton swung it in and somehow it cannoned off the bar directly and was cleared for a United throw which came to the edge of the box where Sam Wade was waiting and with his back to goal he took a touch before attempting an overhead kick which flew well over the bar United were back in control of the game and had a couple more chances – firstly Mark Doleman picked up the ball before skipping past two defenders but hit his shot wide from 25 yards and then on 41 minutes Joe Walters found Steve Barnes who ran with the ball before attempting an audacious lob from 30 yards. It looked like it was going to dip into the net but narrowly went over Somehow Free Gardeners went into half time in the lead with the last chance of the half on 43 minutes. A quick break was met with a ball across the box and it was steered into the bottom corner of the net. 2-1 to Free Gardeners Half Time – Wear United FC 1-2 Millfield Free Gardeners
LAST TIME OUT - WEAR UNITED FC 5-2 MILLFIELD FREE GARDENERS FC United regrouped at half time and were determined to turn this around. On 49 minutes Joe Walters found Sam Wade but his shot was blocked with Richie Morton following up but only finding the keeper with his shot United should have been level on 52 minutes when Joe Walters played a lovely through ball which Sam Wade ran on too beating the defenders and being one on one with the keeper. Sam took his time to take the shot and should have become United’s all time top scorer but the shot went across goal and past the far post Free Gardeners had a rare second half attempt on 56 minutes when the midfielder picked up the ball and ran 15 yards before hitting the shot but it went wide of the goal On the hour United had a free kick. Joe Walters swung it in and it fell to Stephen Keogh who hit a shot but it was well blocked However Stephen Keogh had another chance on 65 minutes and boy did he take it! Steve Barnes swung in a corner which Sam Wade headed towards goal. It was cleared off the line much to Sam’s disbelief and cleared outside of the box where Stephen Keogh got the ball, took a touch and hammered the ball into the top corner from 25 yards. Great strike 2-2 That gave United the momentum to want more and United went in front two minutes later. Another United corner caused problems with Steve Barnes swinging it in and Sam Wade, who looked like he wasn’t going to get that elusive goal, headed it into the ground and into the net to make Sam United’s all time top scorer. United made their first change on 68 minutes with Liam Robson replacing Mark Doleman upfront It got even better for United on 70 minutes and again it came from a set piece. Steve Barnes again putting the ball into the danger area and it dropped in the 6 yard box where defender Liam Coulson was on hand to casually backheel the ball into the net. 4-2 to United United were pushing for more and a minute later Sam Wade this time turned provider teeing up Richie Morton who sweetly hit a shot form 25 yards with power but it flew just past the far post. Sam extended his lead at the top of the goalscoring charts with his second and United’s 5th goal on 72 minutes. Joe Walters playing the ball into the box and Sam coolly placing the ball past the keeper into the net. 5-2 to United Sam Wade should have completed his hattrick on 74 minutes but the Free Gardeners keeper pulled off a world class save. A neat one-two between Sam and Liam Robson ended with Sam shooting towards the top corner. The keeper somehow got across and saved the ball with a brilliant one handed diving save to prevent the goal United’s second and final substitution came on 77 minutes with Chris Pike coming on to replace Joe Walters In the same minute Stephen Keogh tried to double his goal tally for the day with a lobbed effort but it had too much height and went over the bar Another United corner should have given Sam Wade his hattrick when Steve Barnes again played it in and again Sam Wade hit it goalwards only to see it blocked on the line by Liam Robson who was trying to get out of the way of the goalbound effort United were playing with a lot more freedom and after a great passage of play Liam Robson played in Sam Wade but his shot went just wide on 79 minutes. Free Gardeners had a final chance on 81 minutes when a ball to the back post was met with a great diving save from keeper Stu Bowman and the final real chance of the game fell to United with 7 minutes remaining when Liam Robson laid the ball back to Richie Morton but it was on his wrong foot and the shot skewed wide of the goal Full Time – Wear United FC 5-2 Millfield Free Gardeners FC
