ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE KUALA LUMPUR

MAI-JUIN 2014

The French Art and Film Festival (FAFF) organised by the Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur and the Embassy of France in Malaysia is back in town (and in Penang) for its 13th edition. You will catch a glimpse of it in our newsletter but the full programme is available. La Fête de la Musique will be part of the festival with a concert by Canadian jazz-pop singer, Mélissa Laveaux and a nice gathering of Malaysian musicians in Jalan Mesui. We wanted this festival to be longer, to bring you a rich selection of French art, film and culture but also to encourage exchanges with Malaysian artists and cultural institutions. The world acclaimed hip-hop dance company, Pockemon Crew, will give an incredible performance at MaTiC and will engage in a shared freestyle with local hip hop dancers. The Alliance Française will host a concert of Gabriel Bianco, one of the most talented and accomplished classical guitar players in France today. Of course our Film Festival remains the corner stone of this event with a rich and eclectic selection of the best recent French films. In addition to the fully detailed printed programme, a pocket size flyer with the schedule of the screenings will be available and very convenient for those who do not want to miss any film. Cannes Film festival will be celebrated through a magnificent photography exhibition by Clotilde Richalet. So, ask for the programme and enjoy! However, if you feel it is tiresome to read English subtitles, don’t forget the Alliance Française is also there to efficiently assist you in learning French. TELL ME A STORY

“COHESION THROUGH ART”, A CHILDREN’S ART EXHIBITION 26 April - 10 May As part of the project 1Malaysia, the Department of National Unity of the Malaysian government organises several activities in order to enhance social cohesion in the country. Besides an essay writing competition and a mural competition, 1Malaysia has implemented in 2011 a program called “Cohesion through Art”. This year, the research cluster “Arts and National Integration” from UKM Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) has been in charge of organising a drawing workshop for children, entitled “Integration through the Arts”. The children were invited to share their perception of the various Malaysian communities. Through paintings such as “Me and my friends” or “Me and my neighbours”, this activity is aimed at creating awareness of the diversity amongst the Malaysian people, from a very young age. If ethnicity is often a political concept handled by adults, an artistic look from a child’s eyes may create new horizons… The exhibition is presented at AFKL Lorong Gurney. Free admission. Opening hours are the same as the centre business hours.

Once a month, join our storytelling session for kids from 3 to 7 years old at the AFKL library. Stories, tales, rhymes and riddles will be presented by the comedian Grégory Henno. Each session is followed by a colouring or a craft activity. To allow a smooth organisation of the event, please remember to register your kid (refer to the practical information below). Warning! Schedule update on your monthly event: the May and June sessions will be held on Saturday mornings. Upcoming storytelling sessions: · Saturday 17 May - 10.30am. Revamped tales: what if the Little Red Riding Hood wasn’t red? What if Snow White hadn’t bitten into the apple? · Saturday 21 June - 10.30am. Such fine arts! on the occasion of FAFF, let’s discover the artist life! Rate: RM10 per child Please register with the librarians or by email to: library.afkl@gmail.com
