SOMMAIRE CONTENTS

Dear members, students and friends, The time has come to thank you for your support and participation in our French Art and Film Festival. Our commitment to presenting an ambitious programme this year has been fully rewarded. The opening of our film festival was such a nice and well attended gathering of cinema lovers. The box-office revealed once again that there is a strong public expectation for French films in Kuala Lumpur. The dance show by Pockemon crew at MaTiC was a huge success and the audience realized that French hip hop was simply dance and entertainment at its best. We revived the tradition of organizing concerts in our Lorong Gurney centre and the fully acoustic recital by virtuoso guitarist Gabriel Bianco was just fabulous. Our hall was packed and the audience was enthusiastic. Our gastronomy events, tastings of cognac and champagne, Marché de France were well attended in a friendly setting. All our shows were fully booked and though we feel sorry for those who could not buy their tickets, we are indeed very pleased with the success of FAFF this year. The tone has been set for next year. It is time for our FAFF team to have a short rest but AFKL is still fully awake and starts a new session of French classes in July.

CLASSES CLASSES FOCUS ON FRENCH

Justin Lim, private tuition for exam preparations My love affair with the French language began in 2003, from the want to learn a foreign language that lead me to pick my first French travel phrasebook. I then studied independently for 3 years but had to take a leave of absence from it to further pursue my tertiary education. In 2012, my parents had encouraged me to sit for the DELF examinations. After many years of being an Anglophone, I have lost the flair and the strength to relive the passion for the language. But my parents believed that somewhere, inside me, the language still lives. The confidence to step forth to AFKL for a placement test was a personal challenge. Stumbling through, I found myself in a semester of Independent Level 6 intensive course. I then proceeded to sit for the DELF B1 examination in November of 2012 and Delf B2 exmas in March of 2013. In both of these examinations I scored a perfect 25/25 for the Oral Production. The teachers at the AFKL have definitely piqued my interest for the French culture and history which made my learning experience more rewarding. In 2013, I was crowned champion for the singing competition organized by the French Embassy in Malaysia, AFKL and HELP University. With this win, I had the opportunity to perform in the various events that was organized by the AFKL. It was a pleasurable experience for me to be participating actively within the Francophone network. During my years of legal practice, I have felt the need to accomplish further, which is to pass the Diplôme français professionel (Juridique) offered by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris. The course syllabus was wholly conducted in French learning of legal systems, drafting and laws in France. I enrolled myself in a private tuition with Laurent Morenas at the Alliance Française, in preparation for the examination. In this course, one has to know the legal notions by heart, and to be able to grasp a wide range of legal vocabulary. It is a blessing to have a formidable tutor had opened my eyes to other interests in the French political system, and the practical lives of the French in face of law. I have passed the exams in 2014, and was awarded a Mention equivalent to an Honors or a Distinction. Above all, AFKL and its Teachers have played a large chapter in my life’s history and accomplishments of which I am thankful for this organization that indirectly bring diplomatic ties closer through language and culture.
