The great Inquisitions in history have come and gone. We no longer have interest groups or organizations fighting epic battles to combat heresy in a particular religious denomination. Yet if you watch Michigan Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette’s fierce and unrelenting fight against gay marriage in Michigan, which he insistBankole ed he’s doing to defend the Thompson Constitution, it is almost a throwback to the Medieval Inquisition. But this time around there is no order called the Schuette Order. It is a federal judge’s

order, which now may head to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Attorney General who has become the Republican strongman in Michigan believes that he would be vindicated before the highest court in the land. And so when Schuette walked into my office Monday afternoon, confident and assured that he was defending the Constitution, I had no choice but to ask him if he was on a religious crusade where the infidels are those supporting gay marriage. As soon as he took his seat trying to untangle himself from the web of controversy sparked by the gay marriage battle, he dismissed my question right away and said he wasn’t on a crusade. Rather, he was simply doing what Michigan voters supported when they voted to ban gay marriage.

n this exclusive interview with Michigan Chronicle editor Bankole Thompson, Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr speaks out about the future of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department and how the proposal to create a regional authority collapsed after Oakland and Macomb counties backed off, claiming it was not a good deal for their suburban customers. MICHIGAN CHRONICLE: What really happened in the deal involving the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department

that made Oakland and Macomb counties balk? KEVYN ORR: We tried to design a proposal for them that was responsive in a number of ways. First, it was responsive to their request for decades that they have increased governance control and management of the water department. Suburban communities make up over 65 percent of our revenue. We appreciate that and we want to be responsive. Secondly, it was to make sure that citizens of Detroit continue to own the water department. So

the pipes, the lines, switches, the sewerage system, all of that is still going to be owned by the City of Detroit. You can’t replace that overnight. No matter what happens it will be owned by the City of Detroit. Number three, it was to generate sufficient cash from interest rate savings by having a better credit rating department. Number four, capital improvements. The concerns about capital improvements
